Completing The Street: Rapid Redesign Of Citywide Road Networks Using Arcgis, Davidson Drake
City and Regional Planning
This paper was written by Davidson Drake, a student at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and a volunteer with the City of Pomona Planning Department. The mapping, design, and analysis documented in this paper were produced by the author for the City of Pomona as part of its Complete Streets work. While the work shown here is the author’s own, the broader project would not be possible without the efforts of Karla Foster and Max Pastore, who contributed key components to the project.
Pomona’s Complete Streets project represents an ambitious effort to rethink the city’s street network as …

Religious Spaces Reimagined: Adaptive Reuse And Community Integration In Suburbs, Emily Fischer
City and Regional Planning
Tucked away in a quiet pocket of Los Angeles adjacent to Downtown known as Pico Union, a historic synagogue sat mostly empty, its congregation having long since moved on. But in 2013, the building was given a new purpose. The Pico Union Project transformed it into a multifaith and cultural center, turning what was once an underused space into a thriving community hub. Guided by the Jewish principle of ‘love your neighbor as yourself,’ its mission is to uplift and empower diverse communities through arts, social justice, and service. Now, on any given day, families stop by to pick up …

City and Regional Planning
Citizen planners are direct representatives of their communities, “often working without formal position, a title, or support from the state” (Beard, 2012, p. 708). The purpose of this project is to enrich the existing literature of planning history, by including stories of citizen planners. And acknowledging them as key actors in building equitable communities. This project asserts the importance of local knowledge and citizen empowerment when it comes to successfully developing community.
This project follows the story of two Filipino citizen planner organizations. One is in Stockton, named Little Manila Rising (LMR) which is located in South Downtown Stockton. The …

North Hollywood To Burbank Airport Red Line Extension, Benjamin Lieber, Matthew Hu, Michael Lo
City and Regional Planning
The North Hollywood-Burbank Airport Red Line Extension is a proposal that plans to connect the Red Line from the North Hollywood Station to the Hollywood Burbank Airport. The main focus of the extension is to reduce traffic by allowing a direct Metro rail to the airport. Extending the line will help commuters traveling between Los Angeles to San Fernando Valley and new arrivals at the Hollywood Burbank Airport. In the proposal, commuters will have a direct connection to Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner and Coast Starlight without having to travel down to Union Station. Providing safe and accessible entrances to schools, especially elementary, middle, and high schools where children are below the age of 18, should be of utmost priority to cities. Providing wide sidewalks, painted bicycle lanes and continental crosswalks (with the lateral lines) are just basic infrastructure improvements that can be made within the vicinity of a school. However, due to lack of funding or attention from the city departments, many school entryways are being neglected and the direct impact of this is increased collisions among students, drivers, and bicyclists. My senior project studied one such school in Fremont, California where the …

A Transit Oriented Development Proposal For The Fourth And King Caltrain Station In San Francisco, Samuel Frederic Fluhmann
City and Regional Planning
The South of Market and Mission Bay neighborhoods have seen an explosion in growth over the last decade because of the high cluster of technology company opportunities in the area and the Bay Area’s high housing cost. These two neighborhoods are home to a public transportation hub with two San Francisco Muni metro and bus lines, Caltrain service, and Amtrak intercity bus service to Oakland and other parts of California. The existing Caltrain Fourth and King Station and railyards have massive potential for prime real estate development. San Francisco has seen a 10% increase in population over the last ten …
Oceanside Transit Center Transit-Oriented Development (Otc Tod): Revisioning North San Diego's County Transit Hub, Chad Johnston
Oceanside Transit Center Transit-Oriented Development (Otc Tod): Revisioning North San Diego's County Transit Hub, Chad Johnston
City and Regional Planning
Many California coastal communities lack a supply of housing, produce high levels of greenhouse gas emissions by daily auto commuters but have existing local and commuter rail stations with large fields of parking surrounding it. Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) integrates the building of housing, retail, office, and public space together focused around transit stations. This infill of development locates people within comfortable walking distance, usually within a quarter-mile, of a public trail transit station reducing automobile dependence for local trips or commuting for work.
The Oceanside Transit Center (OTC) is a major railway interchange, serving as a gateway to the San …

As climate change continues to threaten everyday life on Earth, humans from every corner of this planet struggle to keep up with changes due access, attitudes, and most importantly affordability. Over the past decade, governments around the world have invested billions into renewable power. Private investors followed, hoping to cash in on what looked like a transformational shift in the way the world produced electricity and lived sustainability. It felt as though it was a way to add jobs, manage fossil-fuel prices, and curb the impending affects of global warming. Unfortunately, a sustainable world will not happen overnight and requires …
