Using Viewshed Analysis To Determine The Impact Of The Proposed Sound Transit Transportation Plan On The Cross Kirkland Corridor, Gavin C. Blake

In this project, I used Viewshed analysis in ArcGIS to determine where Sound Transit’s proposed rapid transit would be visible assuming that rapid transit apparatus, like overhead wires, would reach a height of 20 feet. I used a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and Land Cover and Roads Data to make the model more accurate. While the model could be perfected, it clearly shows that the rapid transit would affect the views of many homes in the Greater Kirkland Area, and as a result, cause the property values of those homes to fall. This map represents quality of life in Maine by looking at six data points for each county: education (percentage of residents with at least a bachelor’s degree), median household income, unemployment rate, disability rate, life expectancy and obesity. Each value is weighted and formulated together to give the county a value. Each county’s relative rank in these categories is compared to create an overall ranking among the 16 counties in Maine.

This map displays a conflict between Maine’s wind resources and its rich wildlife habitats. The map contrasts wind energy potential with conservation land and lynx critical habitat. By overlaying current and proposed wind turbines, the map shows which sites overlap with conservation land and lynx habitat. A buffer zone of 2000 meters around each turbine is used to estimate this conflict. A rough 2000 meters distance is the most widely agree upon turbine buffer by those who suggest buffers, utilized by over 18 different sources, including academic, local, and international sources.

The Sebago Lake watershed supplies drinking water to more than 200,000 people in the Greater Portland area. The Portland Water District (PWD) is currently able to supply water from their intake at the south end of the lake with only minimal treatment to remove bacteria due to the very high water quality of the lake. The district has a strong interest in preserving water quality, which is dependent on the filtering effect of forest and other vegetation surrounding the lake and its watershed. Our project sought to create the first geographically accurate map of campus. The intent of our project was to build a foundation of GIS data to both benefit the Physical Plant Department and enable future research opportunities for GIS students. PPD requested an updated map of campus, as well as analyses of bike infrastructure, light infrastructure, handicap accessibility and optimal walking path placement. We produced a series of recommendations to PPD, detailed in our other posters. This poster primarily details the campus basemap itself, and how we created it.

A 3D GIS map of the campus had never been made before and the project could be used in the future for: planning new building projects, running interesting visual analysis, and as a new way to view campus.

This map shows the critical habitat and nesting sites of important bird species in Maine. Although Acadia National Park is a protected zone, many of the key locations are not located within the park itself. Even for the few areas within the park, these sites see human traffic via hiking trails. The Human Development Intensity is based on a Maine Office of GIS dataset that indexes these values. The map is projected using the NAD83, Universal Transverse Mercator Zone 19N coordinate system.

Using ArcMap, I analyzed several operational factors that would lead to a successful wind farm off the coast of Maine. Through calculating Euclidean distances and reclassifying the distances to fit within a 10-point scoring system, much of the coastline is viable for a potential wind farm. However, the most suitable area is a 115 square mile location 8 miles off the coast of Lincoln and Cumberland counties.

One of the poorest nations in Africa, the small country of Malawi has recently experienced severe deforestation. From 1990-2010, Malawi lost 17% of its forest cover (FAO 2013). Malawi also has the 6th highest population growth rate in the world (3.3% per year) (CIA 2014). Given this information, our study aimed to predict areas of future deforestation in Malawi. We constructed a spatial model to predict deforestation using the following parameters: distance from roads, distance from major markets, and population density. Our model predicted tree cover loss from 2000-2010 with some degree of accuracy. We then applied this model to …

In many occasions, minority communities are more affected by environmentally hazardous substances and activities than other population groups. Shark attacks represent a major human wildlife conflict in Florida. Florida consistently leads the United States in shark attacks annually, yet these shark attacks are not evenly distributed along the coastline. This exploratory analysis investigated various attributes to determine if some characteristics of a particular area off the coast correlated with higher shark attack incidents. Using geographic information system analysis and statistical tests, this project found proximity to beach, shorelines, and flood areas to be significant predictors of shark attack locations. This project analyzes potential areas of environmental injustice on a census tract level throughout Florida. Data on race and median household income were compiled into ArcGIS 10.2.2 along with Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) locations to determine if communities with low income or large minority population are disproportionately exposed to sources of heavy pollution. Statistical tests found that high minority and low income census tracts were more likely to be within two miles of a TRI site and that census tracts containing two or more TRI sites had significantly lower median household incomes than census tracts with only one or fewer …

We assess the drive times and the number of potential tourists and Maine residents that could visit the proposed Katahdin Woods & Waters National Park in Northern Maine. We used ArcGIS to calculate the drive times from potential North and South park entrances to eight locations: Acadia National Park, LL Bean (Freeport), Kennebunk, Bangor Airport, Portland Jetport, Boston Airport, Montreal Airport, and Quebec Airport. We also analyzed the number of households in Maine within a one, two, and three hour drive time of the proposed park. This project was designed to identify suitable habitat for the Canada lynx in the Northeastern United States. We made a habitat suitability index model based on conserved areas, land cover, human population density, snowfall, snowshoe hare populations, and urban areas. Our model predicted that one third of the land was moderately suitable to Canada lynx. Our HSI is also compared to various other lynx distribution data. Our HSI has the added benefit of showing a gradient of suitability.

ArcGIS 10.2.2 and NAD1983 Massachusetts Stateplane Mainland FIPS 2001 projection was used to model sea level rise on Plum Island, Massachusetts. Under high sea level rise conditions of 3m, 81.9% of the buildings on the island will be inundated in addition to a total of 11.06km2 or 75.44% of the islands land area. 86.5% of the wetlands would be inundated, the most loss of any vegetation type on the island. The modeled sea level rise assumes catastrophic conditions such as the melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet (National Snow and Ice Data Center). Based upon elevation data, this model …

Belize is a Central American country that is known for its high biodiversity. According to the Water Center of the Humid Tropics of Latin America and the Caribbean (CATHALAC) and NASA, Belize’s forest cover decreased from 75.9% in late 1980 to 62.7% in 2010. In this project, we developed a spatial model of deforestation in Belize. We hypothesized that factors influencing the potential of deforestation in Belize included elevation, distance to human-built facilities, distance to roads, and whether an area is protected. This map shows the critical Atlantic salmon habitat in Maine, as well as rivers, streams, and water bodies with accompanying hydrological impoundments including dams and levees. It was created using data from the Maine office of GIS and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) GIS database. As reported by the Environment Maine Winter Report of 2011, hydroelectric dams are one of the biggest threats to the species’ survival, which is currently in danger. Dams b lock the salmon’s passage to an d from the sea or the fish are killed when attempting to travel through the dam's turbines.

I was inspired by the USDA’s interactive food atlas map that was created with data from the U.S. Economic Research Service. The food desert data was collected by the USDA for a study analyzing the existence of food deserts in relation to socioeconomic factors such as poverty, ethnicity and age. The USDA defines a food desert as a low-income census tract where a substantial number or share of residents has low-access to a supermarket or grocery store. For my Atlas of Maine project, I manually identified the census tracts defined as food deserts in the state of Maine.

As Tar Sands Oil production increases in Alberta, Canada, oil companies are exploring options to use a pre-existing pipeline known as the Portland-Montreal Pipeline to transport tar sands oil to Casco Bay, ME. In addition to the environmental and human health costs associated with the tar sands extraction process itself, there are potential risks associated with crude oil pipelines. We used Geographic Information System (GIS) to analyze the pipeline’s proximity to critical watersheds and conserved lands in Maine. This map shows the median year that housing structures were built across census tracts in Maine. This gives a rough idea of which tracts have experienced more recent development. The map also relates median year structures built to the locations of cities, urban areas, and highways in Maine. Urban areas are defined as densely settled territories containing at least 2,500 people according to 2000 census data.
