This project displays census tract data, namely racial statistics, in the District of Columbia over a time period from 1950-2010. By using graduated color symbols to represent racial group densities and ratios, a visual representation of population movements is achieved over time. Racial densities are also compared to medium household incomes to determine if wealth distribution is an indicator of population movement. From these statistical trends, it is possible to extrapolate the data into the future resulting in hypothetical district statistics for 2030 and 2050. In this study I examine the spatial distribution of high value and new residences on the shoreline of East Pond and North Pond. To do so, I analyzed property tax data in ArcGIS, between lakes and within lakes, to determine whether there was spatial clustering of the following shoreline property characteristics: property values, price/meter2 of land, and house age. The results identify six potential areas between the two lakes with significantly higher property values, land values, or house ages. If these variables are effective proxies for household income and resident age, then the identified areas may be good locations for …

This project analyzes woodlot feasibility in providing fuel for the biomass facility being built at Colby College in the spring of 2012. The demand for fuel is estimated at 22,000 tons of wood chips annually, fluctuating monthly due to consumption needs. This project identifies the most feasible woodlots for supplying Colby College based on size and distance from the plant. Categorized, the ranking of woodlots may be applied to decisions about where to get fuel as demand rises. Minimum and maximum thresholds can be derived and scaled based on demand.

This map illustrates the effect of impoundments on surface water elevation. The translucent coloring of each lake represents the surface water elevation (white representing 254m, brown representing 248m, etc.). The surface water elevation of each lake becomes progressively lower (the highest being East Pond and the lowest being Messalonskee Lake) because of 5 dams regulating water flow among the lakes. Lakes depth is depicted using bathymetry data in which darker colors represent deeper water. The elevation of the land surrounding the Belgrade lakes is depicted by a hillshade layer in order to portray topography.

As bicycles become an increasingly popular means of transportation it is vital to determine what roads are most suitable for bicycle commuting. I used GIS to analyze factors that influence bicycle compatibility to create a bicycle commuting compatibility model and map for roads in Kennebec County, Maine. I found that more roads in Kennebec County are suitable for bicycle commuting (37.8% with medium compatibility and 37.9% with high compatibility) than unsuitable (24.3% with low compatibility).The model I developed could be applied to any roads for which appropriate data are available.

The dams in the Belgrade Lakes Region of central Maine control water flow of the six main ponds in the watershed. This project simulated historical water levels of these ponds and analyzed what surface area of land maybe have been exposed before the dams were constructed. Our simulation resulted in a 57.7% decrease in surface area of the ponds compared to current surface area. However, it is likely that the change we found is an overestimate because we used dam hydraulic height to calculate the change in water level instead of the actual water height.

A habitat suitability assessment of prey species of south China tiger in Hupingshan-Houhe National Natural Reserve Complex was carried out using a Geographical Information System. Wild boar was selected as a model species. Information on the habitat requirements and natural history characteristics of wild boar was synthesized from published literatures. A preliminary Prey Habitat Suitability Index model was derived based on criteria that fulfill the species’ requirement and reduce human-wildlife conflict. This project is a GIS analysis examining the distribution of toxic sites in Alaska, including Superfund sites, Toxics Release Inventory sites, mining waste sites, and Formerly Used Defense Sites, in relation to populated areas. Our goal was to determine whether these hazardous sites are located disproportionately near indigenous communities, whose populations may be particularly vulnerable to toxics due to their subsistence lifestyles. Our statistical analysis found that, in census tracts with at least one identified toxic site, the percentage of the population identifying as Alaska Native is 59% higher than in those census tracts without any toxic sites. The goal of our study was to determine how human population changed in the towns of the Belgrade Lakes Region and to project future population trends using existing rates of increase. We obtained population data for the towns in the Belgrade Lakes region of Maine (from 1950 to 2000 by decade) from Maine Office of GIS and proceeded to analyze them. Our analysis concluded that town populations in the Belgrade Lakes region increased by an average rate of 21.47%. The township of Oakland experienced the most population growth, increasing by 3,280 people, while Vienna experienced the least population growth, increasing …

The goal of this project was to create a comprehensive map of the walking and hiking trails in the greater Waterville area. We mapped 48 miles of footpaths and off-road Kennebec Messalonskee Trails using hand-held GPS units. We overlaid these routes on satellite images of the Waterville area. Included in the map are trail head parking ares and major street names to facilitate navigation to trail heads. A table of trail lengths also was compiled.

Whitewater canoeing, kayaking, and rafting is both a recreation and a business in the state of Maine. However, the importance of proper information when undergoing these activities is paramount for safety. This study used variables consisting of river width, slope, bedrock density, and flow volume to project the probability of rapids in sections of Maine’s rivers. This data was reclassified to model the whitewater classification scale defined by the international scale of river difficulty (I-V). Agriculture is vital to the economy of Tanzania, providing many jobs and contributing to a large portion of the GDP. This project sought to answer the following question: What land is suitable for agriculture in Tanzania? We hypothesized that in addition to land currently in use for agriculture, there would exist additional land suitable for agriculture that had not yet been realized as such. We used logistic regression to created a model that predicted agricultural suitability across the country. This map shows the ranges of the three endangered terrestrial turtles in Maine: the Blanding's, Box, and the Eastern Painted Turtle. These turtles are on the endangered species list for Maine and the U.S. All suffer from territorial fragmentation which is separating turtle populations, making it hard to keep population growth sustainable. Most live in acidic wetlands or ponds in the southern part of Maine, which is the northernmost part of their range in the U.S.

Lymphoma is a general term for a group of cancers that originate in the lymphatic system. The lymphomas are divided into two major categories: Hodgkin lymphoma and all other lymphomas, called non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL), which is displayed on this map. The annual incidence of NHL in Maine has nearly doubled over the last 50 years. Although the reasons for this increase are not certain, it has been established that pesticides are a known risk factor.
