Understanding And Supporting Young People Who Self Injure In Social Care Settings, David Williams
Understanding And Supporting Young People Who Self Injure In Social Care Settings, David Williams
Articles
Abstract: this article provides a brief discussion on the issue of young people who self injure in social care settings. The discussion identifies this issue to be extremely challenging for social care workers caring for clients presenting with self injurious behaviour. The article focuses on providing some key definitions of self injury, identifies some key concepts in helping professionals understand the functions and reasons for self injurious behaviour and finally suggests some practical guidelines for social care workers in responding to young people in their care who harm themselves. The underlying ethos of these guidelines being the importance of using …
Model-Driven Productivity Evaluation For Self-Adaptive Context-Oriented Software Development, Basel Magableh, Stephen Barrett
Model-Driven Productivity Evaluation For Self-Adaptive Context-Oriented Software Development, Basel Magableh, Stephen Barrett
Articles
Anticipating context changes using a model-based approach requires a formal procedure for analysing and mod- elling their context-dependent functionality, and a stable descrip- tion of the architecture which supports dynamic decision-making and architecture evolution. This article demonstrates the capabil- ities of the context-oriented component-based application-model- driven architecture (COCA-MDA) to support the development of self-adaptive applications; we describe a state-of-the-art case study and evaluate the development effort involved in adopting the COCA-MDA in constructing the application. An intensive analysis of the application requirements simplified the process of modelling the application’s behavioural model; therefore, instead of modelling several variation models, the developers …
Self-Adaptive Application For Indoor Wayfinding For Individuals With Cognitive Impairments, Basel Magableh, Stephen Barrett
Self-Adaptive Application For Indoor Wayfinding For Individuals With Cognitive Impairments, Basel Magableh, Stephen Barrett
Articles
This article focuses on describing a Model Driven Archi- tecture (COCA-MDA) approach that facilitates the develop- ment of self-adaptive application for indoor wayfinding for individuals with cognitive impairments. COCA-MDA pro- vides the following benefits: 1) It enables the architecture to anticipate several behavioural variations based on the context and the specific needs of the individuals with cog- nitive impairments. 2) It enables the application to proac- tively anticipate or reactively address unforeseen changes through support by a dynamic-decision making and policy framework. The policy framework is based on a stable de- scription of software models and proprieties. 3) It can …

Zoning Finality: Reconceptualizing Res Judicata Doctrine In Land Use Cases, Stewart E. Sterk, Kimberly J. Brunelle
Articles
Zoning disputes provide many Americans with their only firsthand exposure to the workings of democratic government. Land use issues trigger participation because neighbors perceive the wrong kind of development as posing a double-barreled threat to the stability of the community in which they have chosen to live and to the economic value of their homes.
Antiviral Trims: Friend Or Foe In Autoimmune And Autoinflammatory Disease?, Caroline A. Jefferies, Claire Wynne, Rowan Higgs
Antiviral Trims: Friend Or Foe In Autoimmune And Autoinflammatory Disease?, Caroline A. Jefferies, Claire Wynne, Rowan Higgs
Articles
The concept that viral sensing systems, via their ability to drive pro-inflammatory cytokine and interferon production, contribute to the development of autoimmune and autoinflammatory disease is supported by a wide range of clinical and experimental observations. Recently, the tripartite motif-containing proteins (TRIMs) have emerged as having key roles in antiviral immunity — either as viral restriction factors or as regulators of pathways downstream of viral RNA and DNA sensors, and the inflammasome. Given their involvement in these pathways, we propose that TRIM proteins contribute to the development and pathology of autoimmune and autoinflammatory conditions, thus making them potential novel targets …

A Novel High Sensitive Optical Fiber Microphone Based On A Singlemode-Multimode-Singlemode Structure, An Sun, Yuliya Semenova, Qiang Wu, Agus Hatta, Gerald Farrell
Articles
In this paper, a novel multimode interference based optical fiber microphone by employing singlemode-multimode-singlemode (SMS) structure is presented. The acoustic vibration is measured by detecting the transmission loss of the SMS structure that attached to a thick aluminum membrane. Experiments are carried on to test the performance of SMS structured fiber microphone and the experimental results show that the SMS fiber sensor can effectively detect the acoustic signal within the audio range of 20 KHz. It also exhibits a high sensitivity and human voice can also be picked up effectively within the distance of 2 m.

In the new version of his Stop Tax Haven Abuse Act, Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., once again proposed to modify the definition of residence for domestic corporations (IRC section 7701). Section 103 of the act seeks to: stop companies run from the United States claiming foreign status by treating foreign corporations that are publicly traded or have gross assets of $50 million or more and whose management and control occur primarily in the United States as U.S. domestic corporations for income tax purposes. [Emphasis in original.] This is not a new suggestion. In response to the inversions of the early …
Ripe For The Plucking: Centralized And Consolidated Library Budgets As Revenue Streams For Profit., Roger Cross
Ripe For The Plucking: Centralized And Consolidated Library Budgets As Revenue Streams For Profit., Roger Cross
Articles
The accumulation and centralization of fiscal and selection power into the hands of library professionals could have benefited all, but inherent flaws were bound to arise. In particular the failure to adapt to increased large profit-driven publishers business. Libraries and universities failed to adequately foresee the extent of publishing monopolization. The academic library, as provider of campus-wide journal subscription, reduced demand by reducing the need to maintain individual departmental and faculty subscriptions. The end result was that a small number of publishers were able to fix pricing according to desired profit margins.

Knowledge Management In A Project Environment: Organisational Ct And Project Influences, Taya Polyaninova
Articles
During a project implementation various forms of information and experience are generated within the organization. If this accumulated knowledge is not recorded and shared amongst other projects, this knowledge will be lost and no longer be available to assist future projects. This may lead to increased future projects costs as resources, time and money will be wasted on redefining the knowledge that once existed within the company. By not capturing and redeploying this knowledge, the quality of a project’s deliverables may adversely suffer. First the publication reviews the concept of project knowledge management. It defines the reasons for managing project …

Wideband Dual-Frequency Dual-Polarized Dipole-Like Antenna, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann
Wideband Dual-Frequency Dual-Polarized Dipole-Like Antenna, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann
Articles
A wideband dual-frequency dual-polarized printed antenna is proposed for LTE, WLAN, and UWB systems. The dual-band antenna provides wide impedance bandwidths of 74% with respect to the center frequency of 2.725 GHz, and 39% with respect to the center frequency of 7.15 GHz. An open slot in the ground plane between the feed arms provides an orthogonal path to realize an embedded circularly polarized band at 2.35 GHz with an axial-ratio bandwidth of 16%. Dual-band characteristics are achieved by an asymmetrical dipole-like element and the coupling configuration between the T-shaped feed line and the wide ground-plane slot.
Monofilar Spiral Slot Antenna For Dual-Frequency Dual-Sense Circular Polarization, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann
Monofilar Spiral Slot Antenna For Dual-Frequency Dual-Sense Circular Polarization, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann
Articles
A dual-band antenna with right-hand circular polarization for the first frequency and the counter polarization at the second frequency is realized with compact printed spiral slots. The coupled spiral slots are fed by a 50 Ω microstrip line. Dual-sense circularly-polarized performance is achieved by realizing oppositely-directed current rotation for the two frequency bands. A parametric study shows that the additional slot significantly improves the bandwidth for both frequency bands. Measured results show that the fractional impedance bandwidth is greater than 18% for both bands. The 3 dB axial-ratio bandwidths are 4.5% and 3.5% for the RHCP and LHCP bands, respectively.

On The Acceleration Of Explicit Finite Difference Methods For Option Pricing, Stephen O'Sullivan, Conall O'Sullivan
On The Acceleration Of Explicit Finite Difference Methods For Option Pricing, Stephen O'Sullivan, Conall O'Sullivan
Articles
Implicit finite difference methods are conventionally preferred over their explicit counterparts for the numerical valuation of options. In large part the reason for this is a severe stability constraint known as the Courant–Friedrichs–Lewy (CFL) condition which limits the latter class’s efficiency. Implicit methods, however, are difficult to implement for all but the most simple of pricing models, whereas explicit techniques are easily adapted to complex problems. For the first time in a financial context, we present an acceleration technique, applicable to explicit finite difference schemes describing diffusive processes with symmetric evolution operators, called Super-Time-Stepping. We show that this method can …
A Three-Dimensional Hydro-Environmental Model Of Dublin Bay, Zeinab Bedri, Michael Buen, Aodh Dowley
A Three-Dimensional Hydro-Environmental Model Of Dublin Bay, Zeinab Bedri, Michael Buen, Aodh Dowley
Articles
This paper compares a 3-dimensional hydro-ecological model with a 2-dimensional model simulating the distribution and fate of Escherichia Coli (E.Coli) discharges from a sewage treatment plant discharging into Dublin Bay, Ireland. Before being discharged, the effluent from the sewage treatment plant is mixed with cooling water from a thermal generation plant resulting in a warm buoyant sewage plume that can be 7 − 9oC higher than the ambient water in the Bay. The mixing of the stratified plume is complicated by the tidal currents which transport the plume into and out of the estuary. These processes have a direct impact …

Kinetic Evaluation Of Colour, Texture, Polyphenols And Antioxidant Capacity Of Irish York Cabbage After Blanching Treatment, Amit Jaiswal, Shilpi Gupta, Nissreen Abu-Ghannam
Articles
In the present work, York cabbage was blanched between 80 to100°C with an increment of 5°C for up to 14 min and kinetics of the different physio-chemical properties were studied. Significant reductions in the texture, color, polyphenols (PPs) and antioxidant (AO) capacity were observed due to blanching. Total phenolic and flavonoid content retained ranged from 19.6-24.5 and 22.0-25.7%, respectively. Heavy losses in the AO capacity also occurred as a result of blanching, which was evident with a loss of 74.0-82.0% in activity as compared to raw York cabbage. Textural studies showed that blanching caused a significant reduction in firmness in …

Developing A Model Framework For Predicting Effects Of Woody Expansion And Fire On Ecosystem Carbon And Nitrogen In A Pinyon-Juniper Woodland, Benjamin M. Rau, Robin J. Tausch, Alicia Reiner, Dale W. Johnson, Jeanne C. Chambers, Robert R. Blank
Articles
Sagebrush-steppe ecosystems are one of the most threatened ecosystems in North America due to woodland expansion, wildfire, and exotic annual grass invasion. Some scientists and policy makers have suggested that woodland expansion will lead to increased carbon (C) storage on the landscape. To assess this potential we used data collected from a Joint Fire Sciences Program demonstration area to develop a Microsoft Excel™ based biomass, carbon, and nitrogen (N) spreadsheet model. The model uses input for tree cover, soil chemistry, soil physical properties, and vegetation chemistry to estimate biomass, carbon, and nitrogen accumulation on the landscape with woodland expansion. The …

On March 21, 2011, AT&T announced that it will buy T-Mobile from Deutsche Telekom for $39 billion. This transaction will be tax free to Deutsche Telekom (DT) not because it qualifies as a reorganization, but because DT is a foreign corporation and capital gains of nonresidents are generally not subject to U.S. taxation because they are deemed to be foreign source. Also, DT is protected from taxation by article 13(5) of the Germany-U.S. tax treaty, which provides that capital gains are generally taxable only by the country of residence.

From Boom To Doom To Boom: Offshore Financial Centres And Development In Small States, Richard Woodward
From Boom To Doom To Boom: Offshore Financial Centres And Development In Small States, Richard Woodward
Articles
During the 1990s tax havens and offshore financial centres (OFCs) were subject to a string of initiatives designed to raise their tax and regulatory regimes to accepted international standards. Many commentators forecast that this would lead to the demise of OFCs, a worry for the many small states whose economic well being depended heavily on the provision of offshore financial services. Despite this regulatory onslaught many small state OFCs have prospered in the new millennium. This paper seeks to explain this apparent paradox by arguing that (1) international initiatives were riddled with loopholes and exceptions that have been gleefully seized …

A Statistical Data Mining Approach To Determining The Factors That Distinguish Championship Caliber Teams In The National Football League, Ernest Fokoué, Dan Foehrenbach
Articles
This paper uses machine learning and data mining techniques to explore most of the performance measurements used in American football. The main goal is to determine/extract those factors that are most responsible for the success of the so-called great NFL teams. We consider a very large number of commonly used performance statistics and variables along with success indicators like winning percentage, playoff appearance, and championship wins. It is held by many football analysts/experts that defense wins championships. In this paper, we seek to establish if indeed there is ample evidence that the so called dominant teams are based on more …
Towards A Unified Definition Of Supply Chain Management, Edward Sweeney
Towards A Unified Definition Of Supply Chain Management, Edward Sweeney
Articles
A wide range of definitions of supply chain management (SCM) have been developed over the last three decades. The philosophy of SCM is based firmly on a recognition that it is only by working in a more integrated manner that competitive advantage can be maximised. However, for this to become a reality the development of common definitions and understandings between supply chain partners is a critical success factor. The corollary of this is that a lack of definitional consistency and a common understanding is an inhibitor to the successful adoption of SCM thinking in practice. This paper reviews a number …

Stable Radial Basis Function Selection Via Mixture Modelling Of The Sample Path, Ernest Fokoue
Stable Radial Basis Function Selection Via Mixture Modelling Of The Sample Path, Ernest Fokoue
Articles
We consider a fully Bayesian treatment of radial basis function regression, and propose a solution to the the instability of basis selection. Indeed, when bases are selected solely according to the magnitude of their posterior inclusion probabilities, it is often the case that many bases in the same neighborhood end up getting selected leading to redundancy and ultimately inaccuracy of the representation. In this paper, we propose a straightforward solution to the problem based on post-processing the sample path yielded by the model space search technique. Specifically, we perform an a posteriori model-based clustering of the sample path via a …
