Untangling Unreliable Citations, Margie Alsbrook Jan 2024

Untangling Unreliable Citations, Margie Alsbrook

Articles

Citations are the vernacular that the legal profession uses to communicate the precedents that underline our arguments and analysis. They are the building blocks of legal communications and legal arguments, and lawyers and judges need to be able to rely upon the accuracy of each other’s citations to work in a stabilized democracy. Democratic stability is in jeopardy due to an erosion of norms from a variety of well-documented sources, most of which are well beyond the control of the average lawyer. But lawyers and judges can control the reliability of the authority we use in our own work product, …

Solving A Sixth Amendment Crisis: The Case For Resource Parity In Georgia's Indigent Defense System, Meagan R. Hurley Jan 2024

Solving A Sixth Amendment Crisis: The Case For Resource Parity In Georgia's Indigent Defense System, Meagan R. Hurley

Articles

The United States criminal legal system employs what is said to be an “adversary” system—one in which opposing parties—the prosecution and the defense—present their evidence and arguments (usually in conflict with one another) to a neutral third party (a judge or jury) for adjudication. The idea behind the adversarial process is that a judge or jury is best positioned to make determinations of guilt or innocence once provided with reliable information from competent, zealous, and prepared advocates on both sides of the podium. At its core, the adversarial system is meant to function as the mechanism by which constitutional principles …

A global shortage of chefs and cooks currently exists within the hospitality industry, exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Migrant cooks are essential to the culinary industry, yet remain relatively anonymous within the academic literature, a research gap which this original paper seeks to address. Using a phenomenological epistemology, combined with the theoretical framework of hospitality and practice theory, this qualitative research focused on investigating the lived experience of the professional lives and identities of immigrant cooks working in Paris, France, the birthplace of the restaurant. Extant literature was reviewed, and a focus group with migrant cooks explored themes within and …

Comparison Of Holographic Recording Options For Reflection-Format And Transmission-Format Coupler-Type Diffractive Optical Elements: Theoretical Exploration And Experimental Validation, Dipanjan Chakraborty, Rosen Georgiev, Vincent Toal, Izabela Naydenova, Dervil Cody, Suzanne Martin Jan 2024

Comparison Of Holographic Recording Options For Reflection-Format And Transmission-Format Coupler-Type Diffractive Optical Elements: Theoretical Exploration And Experimental Validation, Dipanjan Chakraborty, Rosen Georgiev, Vincent Toal, Izabela Naydenova, Dervil Cody, Suzanne Martin

Articles

The holographic recording of gratings that have very large diffraction angles and/or slants is challenging because recording requires beam angles that are not possible without the use of prisms. However, by using a recording wavelength that is different from (usually shorter than) the intended operating wavelength, it is possible to record with less challenging beam angles. In this paper, a recently developed model that allows systematic investigation of the potential and limits of this wavelength-shift recording technique is extended to include a reflection format. Transmission and reflection recording options are compared systematically for the first time, and it is shown …

Experimental And Computational Investigation Of The Kinetic Evolution Of The Glutaminolysis Pathway And Its Interplay With The Glycolysis Pathway, Zohreh Mirveis, Nitin Patil, Hugh J. Byrne

Articles

Exploring cellular responses necessitates studying real-time metabolic pathway kinetics, considering the adaptable nature of cells. Glycolysis and glutaminolysis are interconnected pathways fundamental to driving cellular metabolism, generating both energy and essential biosynthetic molecules. While prior studies explored glycolysis tracking, this research focuses on monitoring the kinetics of the glutaminolysis pathway by evaluating the effect of glutamine availability on glycolytic kinetics and by investigating the impact of a stimulator (oligomycin) and inhibitor (2DG) on the glycolytic flux in the presence of glutamine. Additionally, we adapted a rate equation model to provide improved understanding of the pathway kinetics. The experimental and simulated …

The majority of available climate data in global digital archives consist of data only from the 1940s or 1950s onwards, and many of these series have gaps and/or are available for only a subset of the variables which were actually observed. However, there exist billions of historical weather observations from the 1700s, 1800s, and early 1900s that are still in hard‐copy form and are at risk of being lost forever due to deterioration. An assessment of changes in climate extremes in several IPCC regions was not possible in IPCC AR6 WGI owing, in many cases, to the lack of available …

Textural Characterisation Of Wheat–Oat Breads Using A Combination Of Quantitative Descriptive Analysis And Partial Napping Profiling Techniques, Mahmoud Said Rashed, Shivani Pathania, Eimear Gallagher, Jesus M. Frias, Ciara Mcdonagh, Emily Crofton Jan 2024

Textural Characterisation Of Wheat–Oat Breads Using A Combination Of Quantitative Descriptive Analysis And Partial Napping Profiling Techniques, Mahmoud Said Rashed, Shivani Pathania, Eimear Gallagher, Jesus M. Frias, Ciara Mcdonagh, Emily Crofton

Articles

The aim of this study was to determine the textural sensory profile of wheat breads developed using oat flour at different substitution levels (10%, 30%, and 50%) and particle sizes (<224, 250–280, 280–500, 500–600 μm). A trained descriptive panel evaluated the wheat–oat breads using quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) (n = 8) and partial napping (PN) (n = 12) sensory techniques. The QDA results showed that the textural properties of the breads were significantly affected by oat flour at different substitution and particle size levels (P < 0.001). The attributes crumb ‘denseness' and ‘stickiness' discriminated most frequently across samples, while crumb ‘chewiness' and ‘dryness' discriminated the least. Principal component analysis (PCA) illustrated that in PC1 (59%) crumb ‘denseness' was positively correlated with crumb ‘hardness' and ‘graininess', while ‘stickiness' was negatively correlated with crumb ‘graininess'. The application of clustering techniques on QDA data showed that breads with 10% oat flour were differentiated based on particle size; however, as the substitution level of oat flour increased, the substitution level of oat flour used in formulations exceeded the effect of particle size. In terms of PN, panellists identified four distinct groups of wheat–oat breads, indicating that wheat breads with 10% oat flour and <224 μm, 280–500 μm and whole oat flour had similar textural properties to the control wheat bread sample. The texture of wheat breads substituted with 50% oat flour were very different to the control. The results of this study suggest that in addition to the effect of substitution level, fractionation of oat flour may have application in the production of wheat bread formulations with different textural profiles. The findings also emphasise the importance of considering clustering techniques when evaluating complex samples for new product development applications.

Government and corporate policies have mandated a reduction in plastic packaging to combat issues of waste and climate change. This move towards sustainable packaging alternatives in the fresh food sector will increase costs for consumers. Much of the present research finds consumers are willing to pay more for sustainability, but their willingness to pay (WTP) does not align with real-world purchases, representing an attitude–behaviour gap. To combat this gap, it is posited that consumers' current purchasing- and sustainability-related behaviours will meaningfully correlate with their WTP and bridge the attitude–behaviour gap. This research used an online survey (n = 476) to …

Assessing Baby Leaf Kale (Brassica Oleracea) Waste Production Mitigation In The Transition To Sustainable Packaging With The Application Of Silicon Through An Integrative Model Of Quality, Francesco S. Giordano, Andrew Reynolds, Catherine M. Burgess, Lorraine Foley, Jesus M. Frias

Articles

This research builds a mathematical modelling to assess food waste production when designing sustainable packaging solutions integrated with an agricultural intervention in kale production. The model utilizes experimental data obtained from simulated retail and distribution storage conditions to assess the probability of the product to be found out of technical specification and becoming waste. The packaging design was made using a system of differential equations describing the gas exchanges inside the packaging. The waste was estimated fitting linear mixed effect models to the postharvest experimental data, accounting for the variability between and within groups. A field experiment with kale treated …

Abstract: The present work investigated the structure-function relationship of dry fractionated oat flour (DFOF) as a techno-functional ingredient using bread as a model system. Mechanically, DFOF fractions (F), that is, F1: <224 µm, F2: 250–280 µm, F3: 280–500 µm, F4: 500–600 µm, and whole oat flour (F5) were blended with white wheat flour at 10%, 30%, and 50% substitution levels for bread making. The blended flours, doughs, and bread samples were assessed for their techno-functional, nutritional, and structural characteristics. The results of Mixolab and the Rapid Visco Analyzer show that the 50% substituted F3 fraction exhibits the highest water absorption properties (69.53%), whereas the 50% F1 fraction exhibits the highest peak viscosity of the past slurry. Analysis of bread samples revealed a lower particle size of DFOF fractions and higher supplementation levels, increased β-glucan levels (0.13–1.29 g/100 bread (db), reduced fermentable monosaccharides, that is, glucose (1.44–0.33 g/100 g), and fructose (1.06–0.28 g/100 g). The effect of particle size surpassed the substitution level effect on bread volume reduction. The lowest hardness value for F1 is 10%, and the highest value for F2 is 50%. The total number of cells in the bread slice decreased from the control to the F4 fraction (50%). Multi-criteria analysis indicated that DFOF fractions produced breads with similar structure and higher nutritional value developed from white wheat flour. Practical Application: The use of mechanically fractionated oat flours fractions in white wheat flour breads can improve the nutritional profile without affecting the physical properties of the bread product. Based on the oat flour fractions, bakers and food processing companies can tailor the bread formulations for high β-glucan, high fiber, and low reduced sugar claims.

Pastebin is an online notepad service to share text anonymously. However, it could be misused to propagate suspicious or even illegal activities, like leaking sensitive information or sharing hyperlinks to child sexual abuse material. Due to the high rate of daily upload pastes, manual inspection of this material is not feasible. Conversely, an automatic classifier could identify such activities with little or no human intervention. However, a supervised model may require a significant number of training samples and have to handle distinct text typologies presented in Pastebin. This paper presents a classification approach composed of three cascading supervised classifiers that …

Modelling Surface Waves On Shear Current With Quadratic Depth-Dependence, Conor Curtin, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

The currents in the ocean have a serious impact on ocean dynamics, since they affect the transport of mass and thus the distribution of salinity, nutrients and pollutants. In many physically important situations the current depends quadratic-ally on the depth. We consider a single layer of fluid and study the propagation of the surface waves in the presence of depth-dependent current with quadratic profile. We select the scale of parameters and quantities, which are typical for the Boussinesq propagation regime (long wave and small amplitude limit) and we also derive the well known KdV model for the surface waves interacting …

Data centers consume significant amounts of energy, contributing indirectly to environmental pollution through greenhouse gas emissions during electricity generation. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, information and communication technologies and networks account for roughly 10% of global energy consumption. Reducing power consumption in Data Center Networks (DCNs) is crucial, especially given that many data center components operate at full capacity even under low traffic conditions, resulting in high costs for both service providers and consumers. Current solutions often prioritize power optimization without considering Quality of Service (QoS). Services such as video streaming and Voice over IP (VoIP) are particularly …

Given the recognized major problem of microbial drug resistance for human health, new metal-based drugs have been currently explored for their antimicrobial properties, including gallium-based compounds as potential metallophores that could perturb Fe's interactions with proteins. Herein we have designed and synthesized two bis-kojate ligands (named L4 and L6) and studied their Ga(III) complexes for their physico-chemical and biological properties. In particular a detailed study of their complexation properties in aqueous solution, showed equilibrium models with formation of quite stable dinuclear 2:3 metal:ligand complexes, though with different stability. Solid state complexes were also prepared and characterized and complementary DFT studies …
