Can Sport Be ‘Un-Political’?, Ansgar Thiel, Anna Vilanova, Martin Toms, Lone Friis Thing, Paddy Dolan

Articles

Sports officials often claim that sport has to be ‘un-political’. This argument is most notably made in two contexts: Firstly, when the decision of awarding Olympic Games or World Championships to nations that struggle with human right issues is justified by the IOC or other international sporting federations. Secondly, when athletes express their concern over social injustices with symbolic gestures of protest in sports-specific contexts.

A Tale Of Three Markets: Comparing The Renewable Energy Experiences Of California, Texas, And Germany, Felix Mormann, Dan Reicher, Victor Hanna

Articles

The Obama administration has repeatedly identified the large-scale build-out of clean, renewable energy infrastructure as a key priority of the United States. The President's calls for a cleaner energy economy are often accompanied by references to other industrialized countries such as Germany, hailed by many as a leader in renewable energy deployment. Indeed, the share of renewables in Germany's electricity generation mix is twice that of the United States, and the ambitious "Energiewende" commits the country to meeting 80% of its electricity needs with renewables by 2050. While some praise the German renewables experience as successful proof of concept, others …

Law And Regime Change: The Common Law, Knowledge Regimes, And Democracy Between The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries, Kunal Parker Jan 2016

Law And Regime Change: The Common Law, Knowledge Regimes, And Democracy Between The Nineteenth And Twentieth Centuries, Kunal Parker

Articles

Using a change in knowledge regime as a paradigm of regime change, this paper explores the career of common law thinking in the United States between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It shows how, under the pressures of anti-foundational thinking, knowledge moved from a nineteenth-century regime of “knowledge that,” a regime of foundational knowledge, to an early-twentieth-century regime of “knowledge how,” a regime of anti-foundational knowledge concerned with the procedures, processes, and protocols of arriving at knowledge. It then shows how common law thinkers adapted to this change in knowledge regimes, transforming the common law from a body of substantive …

Regulation Of Antisense Transcription By Nua4 Histone Acetyltransferase And Other Chromatin Regulatory Factors., Bhawana Uprety, Amala Kaja, Jannatul Ferdoush, Rwik Sen, Sukesh R. Bhaumik Jan 2016

Regulation Of Antisense Transcription By Nua4 Histone Acetyltransferase And Other Chromatin Regulatory Factors., Bhawana Uprety, Amala Kaja, Jannatul Ferdoush, Rwik Sen, Sukesh R. Bhaumik

Articles

NuA4 histone lysine (K) acetyltransferase (KAT) promotes transcriptional initiation of TATA-binding protein (TBP)-associated factor (TAF)-dependent ribosomal protein genes. TAFs have also been recently found to enhance antisense transcription from the 3' end of the GAL10 coding sequence. However, it remains unknown whether, like sense transcription of the ribosomal protein genes, TAF-dependent antisense transcription of GAL10 also requires NuA4 KAT. Here, we show that NuA4 KAT associates with the GAL10 antisense transcription initiation site at the 3' end of the coding sequence. Such association of NuA4 KAT depends on the Reb1p-binding site that recruits Reb1p activator to the GAL10 antisense transcription …

Delayed Valuation: A Reanalysis Of Goal Features, “Upwards” Complementizer Agreement, And The Mechanics Of Case, Vicki Carstens Jan 2016

Delayed Valuation: A Reanalysis Of Goal Features, “Upwards” Complementizer Agreement, And The Mechanics Of Case, Vicki Carstens

Articles

There are at least four opposing views on the directionality and configuration of Agree relations. In mainstream Minimalism, Agree is strictly downward “probing” (Chomsky 2000, 2001, Boskovic 2007, Epstein & Seely 2006), but some recent works argue instead that Agree always looks upwards (Zeijlstra 2012; Wurmbrand 2012). A third perspective takes agreement to follow from the Spec, head configuration (Koopman 2006; and see Chomsky’s 2013 labeling through shared prominent features), and under a fourth proposal, the directionality of Agree varies parametrically (Baker 2008). While each of these approaches has some empirical support, none achieves the strict conceptual necessity that is …

Atpg For Delay Defects In Current Mode Threshold Logic Circuits, Ashok Kumar Palaniswamy, Spyros Tragoudas, Themistoklis Haniotakis Jan 2016

Atpg For Delay Defects In Current Mode Threshold Logic Circuits, Ashok Kumar Palaniswamy, Spyros Tragoudas, Themistoklis Haniotakis

Articles

An automatic test pattern generation approach to
detect delay defects in a circuit consisting of current mode
threshold logic gates is introduced. Each generated pattern
should excite the maximum propagation delay at the fault site.
Manufactured weights may vary, and maximum delay is ensured
by applying an appropriately generated set of patterns per fault.
Experimental results show the efficiency of the proposed methods.

Non-Enumerative Generation Of Path Delay Distributions And Its Application To Critical Path Selection, Ahish Mysore Somashekhar, Spyros Tragoudas, Rathish Jayabharathi, Sreenivas Gangadhar Jan 2016

Non-Enumerative Generation Of Path Delay Distributions And Its Application To Critical Path Selection, Ahish Mysore Somashekhar, Spyros Tragoudas, Rathish Jayabharathi, Sreenivas Gangadhar

Articles

A Monte Carlo based approach is proposed capable of identifying in a non-enumerative and scalable manner the distributions that describe the delay of every path in a combinational circuit. Furthermore, a scalable approach to select critical paths from a potentially exponential number of path candidates is presented. Paths and their delay distributions are stored in Zero Suppressed Binary Decision Diagrams. Experimental results on some of the largest ISCAS-89 and ITC-99 benchmarks shows that the proposed method is highly scalable and effective.

Adaptive Sensor Node Sleep Scheduling For Quality-Of-Experience Enhancement, Mini Mathew, Ning Weng Jan 2016

Adaptive Sensor Node Sleep Scheduling For Quality-Of-Experience Enhancement, Mini Mathew, Ning Weng

Articles

Focusing on a user’s quality-of-experience (QoE) has become important, because of the growing space of sensor-dependent applications and low-cost sensor design. QoE is typically affected by two quantities: the quality-of-information (QoI) received and the lifetime-of-service. Therefore, QoE is defined as a sensor network’s ability to consistently offer assured QoI for an expected lifetime when operating on a limited energy resource, such as a battery. However, dynamic factors, such as varying user requirements, unpredictable sensor environment, unreliable network conditions, and limited energy resource, affecting both QoI and lifetime-of-service, make it challenging to achieve a good QoE. In our previous work, we …

Charge Recycling 8t Sram Design For Low Voltage Robust Operation, Xu Wang, Chao Lu, Zhigang Mao Jan 2016

Charge Recycling 8t Sram Design For Low Voltage Robust Operation, Xu Wang, Chao Lu, Zhigang Mao

Articles

It is attractive to design power efficient and robust SRAM in low voltage and high performance systems for mobile or battery-powered electronics. To reduce the power consumption resulting from bit-line activities, a new bit-line charge recycling circuit is proposed for 8T SRAMs. By eliminating the use of analog blocks required in existing circuits in literature, this proposed charge recycling scheme results in less design complexity. In addition, two types of SRAM cells are employed to improve the robustness in write operation, and hierarchical bit-line structure is applied to reduce the power consumption in read operation. Post-layout simulations demonstrate the proposed …

Whole Mount Dissection And Immunofluorescence Of The Adult Mouse Cochlea., Scott C Montgomery, Brandon C Cox Jan 2016

Whole Mount Dissection And Immunofluorescence Of The Adult Mouse Cochlea., Scott C Montgomery, Brandon C Cox

Articles

The organ of Corti, housed in the cochlea of the inner ear, contains mechanosensory hair cells and surrounding supporting cells which are organized in a spiral shape and have a tonotopic gradient for sound detection. The mouse cochlea is approximately 6 mm long and often divided into three turns (apex, middle, and base) for analysis. To investigate cell loss, cell division, or mosaic gene expression, the whole mount or surface preparation of the cochlea is useful. This dissection method allows visualization of all cells within the organ of Corti when combined with immunostaining and confocal microscopy to image cells at …

Framing Effects On Bidding Behavior In Experimental First-Price Sealed-Bid Money Auctions, Michael J. Vernarelli, Justin S. Skillman Jan 2016

Framing Effects On Bidding Behavior In Experimental First-Price Sealed-Bid Money Auctions, Michael J. Vernarelli, Justin S. Skillman

Articles

Consumers often face prices that are the sum of two components, for example, an online purchase that includes a stated price and shipping costs. In such cases consumer behavior may be influenced by framing, i.e., how the components are bifurcated. Previous studies have demonstrated the effects of framing and anchoring in auctions. This study examines bidding patterns in a series of first-price sealed-bid experimental money auctions (where the commodity being auctioned is money itself). We hypothesize that bidders’ behavior is affected by the framing of the potential monetary payoff into “monetary prize” and “winner’s bonus” components. We find strong evidence …

Enhanced Corrosion Protection And Biocompatibility Of A Plga-Silane Coating On Az31 Mg Alloy For Orthopaedic Applications, Sankalp Agarwal, Muhammad Morshed, Marie-Noelle Labour, David Hoey, Brendan Duffy, James Curtin, Swarna Jaiswal

Articles

This paper reports a multi-step procedure to fabricate a novel corrosion resistant and biocompatible PLGA-silane coating on the magnesium (Mg) alloy AZ31. The first step involves alkaline passivation followed by dip coating in a methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) mixture to produce a cross-linked siloxane coating. The second step is to impart an amine functionalization to the silane modified surface by using 3-aminopropyl-triethoxy silane (APTES) for promoting adhesion of the acid terminated poly-(lactic-co-glycolic) acid (PLGA) as a final coating step. Static contact angle measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy analysis confirmed the successful assembly of coatings on …

The Concept Of Property, Meredith M. Render Jan 2016

The Concept Of Property, Meredith M. Render

Articles

This Article confronts the conceptualistnonconceptualist divide in property theory Specifically the Article addresses the primary normative objection to the conceptualist account of property In the course of addressing this criticism the Article bridges an important gap in the literature and provides a new way of understanding the legal concept of property as distinguished from other types of legal arrangementsThe conceptualistnonconceptualist divide centers on whether the legal concept of "˜property' can be said to have criterial features "“ that is features that make "˜property' both unique and distinguishable from other legal concepts such as contract Conceptualists understand the concept of "˜property' …
