Differentiating Responses Of Lung Cancer Cell Lines To Doxorubicin Exposure: In Vitro Raman Micro Spectroscopy, Oxidative Stress And Bcl-2 Protein Expression, Zeineb Farhane, Franck Bonnier, Marcus A. Maher, Jane Bryant, Alan Casey, Hugh Byrne

Articles

The potential of Raman micro spectroscopy as an in vitro, non-invasive tool for clinical applications has been demonstrated in recent years, specifically for cancer research. To further illustrate its potential as a high content and label free technique, it is important to show its capability to elucidate drug mechanisms of action and cellular resistances. In this study, cytotoxicity assays were employed to establish the toxicity profiles for 24 hr exposure of lung cancer cell lines, A549 and Calu-1, to the commercially available drug, doxorubicin (DOX). Raman spectroscopy, coupled with Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy and Flow Cytometry, was used to track …

Enhanced Master/Slave Control Strategy Enabling Grid Support Services And Offshore Wind Power Dispatch In A Multi-Terminal Vsc Hvdc Transmission System, Roberto Sandano, Michael Farrell, Malabika Basu Jan 2017

Enhanced Master/Slave Control Strategy Enabling Grid Support Services And Offshore Wind Power Dispatch In A Multi-Terminal Vsc Hvdc Transmission System, Roberto Sandano, Michael Farrell, Malabika Basu

Articles

New high voltage direct current (HVDC) installations are expected to be able to provide stability support to the main synchronous networks to which they are connected. In multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) schemes incorporating offshore wind farm this issue could be addressed by setting aside a reserve of wind energy by the curtailment of wind turbine generators (WTGs). This paper proposes a communication-less dc voltage cooperative control strategy for MTDC transmission systems. A grid side converter, the master, and a wind farm are designed to work cooperatively to maintain a stable dc link voltage, facilitating normal power dispatch orders and the provision …

Articles

Hybrid graphene–copper ultra-wideband array sensor applied to microwave imaging technique is successfully used in detecting and visualizing tumor inside human brain. The sensor made of graphene coated film for the patch while copper for both the transmission line and parasitic element. The hybrid sensor performance is better than fully copper sensor. Hybrid sensor recorded wider bandwidth of 2.0–10.1 GHz compared with fully copper sensor operated from 2.5 to 10.1 GHz. Higher gain of 3.8–8.5 dB is presented by hybrid sensor, while fully copper sensor stated lower gain ranging from 2.6 to 6.7 dB. Both sensors recorded excellent total efficiency averaged …

Dialectric Materials With Memory 1: Minimum And General Free Energies., Scott Glascow, John Murrough Golden Jan 2017

Dialectric Materials With Memory 1: Minimum And General Free Energies., Scott Glascow, John Murrough Golden

Articles

A general tensor isothermal theory of free energies and free enthalpies for dielectrics is presented, corresponding to linear constitutive relations with memory. Starting from the general equations of continuum thermodynamics, various properties of and constraints on free energy/enthalpy functionals in dielectric media are noted. It is well-known that free enthalpies are particularly convenient in that their properties are closely analogous with those of free energies in mechanics, though different in crucial ways. General constitutive equations with memory are determined from a given free enthalpy. The form of the relaxation function, which occurs in these constitutive equations, is discussed from a …

Dressing Method For The Degasperis-Procesi Equation, Adrian Constantin, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

The soliton solutions of the Degasperis–Procesi equations are constructed by the implementation of the dressing method. The form of the one and two soliton solutions coincides with the form obtained by Hirota's method.

Bayesian Exponential Random Graph Modelling Of Interhospital Patient Referral Networks, Alberto Caimo, Francesca Pallotti, Alessandro Lomi Jan 2017

Bayesian Exponential Random Graph Modelling Of Interhospital Patient Referral Networks, Alberto Caimo, Francesca Pallotti, Alessandro Lomi

Articles

Using original data that we have collected on referral relations between 110 hospitals serving a large regional community, we show how recently derived Bayesian exponential random graph models may be adopted to illuminate core empirical issues in research on relational coordination among healthcare organisations. We show how a rigorous Bayesian computation approach supports a fully probabilistic analytical framework that alleviates well-known problems in the estimation of model parameters of exponential random graph models. We also show how the main structural features of interhospital patient referral networks that prior studies have described can be reproduced with accuracy by specifying the system …

Dielectric Materials With Memory Ii: Free Energies In Non- Magnetic Materials, Scott Glascow, John Murrough Golden Jan 2017

Dielectric Materials With Memory Ii: Free Energies In Non- Magnetic Materials, Scott Glascow, John Murrough Golden

Articles

An isothermal theory of free energies and free enthalpies, corresponding to linear constitutive relations with memory, is presented for isotropic non-magnetic materials. This is a second paper, following recent work on a general tensor theory of isothermal dielectrics and on the form of the minimum free energy. Both papers are based on continuum thermodynamics. For a standard choice of relaxation function, the minimum and maximum free energies are given explicitly, using a method previously developed in a mechanics context. Also, a new family of intermediate free energy functionals is derived for dielectrics. All these are solutions of a constrained optimization …

Effect Of Sky Clearness Index On Transmission Of Evacuated (Vacuum) Glazing, Aritra Ghosh, Brian Norton, Aidan Duffy Jan 2017

Effect Of Sky Clearness Index On Transmission Of Evacuated (Vacuum) Glazing, Aritra Ghosh, Brian Norton, Aidan Duffy

Articles

Glazing transmittance variation with clearness index has higher influence than incident angle for soar energy application. This work presents variation of vacuum glazing transmittance with clearness index. Clearness index and transmittance was calculated from measured one year (2014) solar radiation and glazing transmittance data in Dublin, Ireland. Clearness index below 0.5 offer single value of transmittance whereas above 0.5 clearness index glazing transmittance varies with clearness index. For different azimuthal orientation, clearness index associated with vertical plane glazing transmittance has been proposed. In Dublin for south facing vertical plane, vacuum glazing has 35% transmittance below 0.5 clearness index. Yearly usable …

Developing Historic Building Information Modelling Guidelines And Procedures For Architectural Heritage In Ireland, Maurice Murphy, A. Corns, John Cahill, K. Eliashvli, Alain Chenaux, C. Pybus, R. Shaw, G. Devlin, A. Deevy, L. Truong-Hong

Articles

Cultural heritage researchers have recently begun applying Building Information Modelling (BIM) to historic buildings. The model is comprised of intelligent objects with semantic attributes which represent the elements of a building structure and are organised within a 3D virtual environment. Case studies in Ireland are used to test and develop the suitable systems for (a) data capture/digital surveying/processing (b) developing library of architectural components and (c) mapping these architectural components onto the laser scan or digital survey to relate the intelligent virtual representation of a historic structure (HBIM). While BIM platforms have the potential to create a virtual and intelligent …

Photoluminescence Of Lead Sulfide Quantum Dots Of Different Sizes In A Nanoporous Silicate Glass Matrix, Aleksandr P. Litvin, Anton Babaev, Peter Parfenov, Elena Ushakova, Mikhail Baranov, Olga Andreeva, Kevin Berwick, Anatoly Fedorov, Alexander Baranov

Articles

The optical properties of lead sulfide quantum dots (QDs) of different sizes embedded in a nanoporous silicate glass matrix (NSM) are investigated by steady-state and transient photoluminescence spectroscopy. The use of this matrix allows the fabrication of samples with reproducible optical characteristics, for both isolated and close-packed QDs. Low-temperature PL analysis of isolated QDs with sizes of 3.7 and 4.5 nm shows that the coefficient of temperature shift of the PL position changes sign with reducing QD size because of size-dependent contributions from thermal expansion, mechanical strain, and electron–phonon coupling. The PL intensity is determined by size-dependent splitting of the …

Time-Varying And Constant Switching Frequency-Based Sliding-Mode Control Methods For Transformerless Dvr Employing Half-Bridge Vsi, Hasan Komurcugil, Samet Biricik Jan 2017

Time-Varying And Constant Switching Frequency-Based Sliding-Mode Control Methods For Transformerless Dvr Employing Half-Bridge Vsi, Hasan Komurcugil, Samet Biricik

Articles

This paper presents time-varying and constant switching frequency based sliding-mode control (SMC) methods for three-phase transformerless dynamic voltage restorers (TDVRs) which employ half-bridge voltage source inverter. An equation is derived for the time-varying switching frequency. However, since the time-varying switching frequency is not desired in practice, a smoothing operation is applied to the sliding surface function within a narrow boundary layer with the aim of eliminating the chattering effect and achieving a constant switching frequency operation. The control signal obtained from the smoothing operation is compared with a triangular carrier signal to produce the pulse width modulation signals. The feasibility …

Determination Of Reliable Fatigue Life Predictors For Magnetorheological Elastomers Under Dynamic Equi-Biaxial Loading, Yangen Zhou, Liang Jiang, Shaojuan Chen, Jianwei Ma, Tony Betts, Stephen Jerrams Jan 2017

Determination Of Reliable Fatigue Life Predictors For Magnetorheological Elastomers Under Dynamic Equi-Biaxial Loading, Yangen Zhou, Liang Jiang, Shaojuan Chen, Jianwei Ma, Tony Betts, Stephen Jerrams

Articles

Fatigue life prediction is of great significance in ensuring magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) based rubber components exhibit reliability and do not compromise safety under complex loading and this necessitates the development of plausible fatigue life predictors for MREs. In this research, silicone rubber based MREs were fabricated by incorporating soft carbonyl iron magnetic particles. Equi-biaxial fatigue behaviour of the fabricated MREs was investigated by using the bubble inflation method. The relationship between fatigue life and maximum engineering stress, maximum strain and strain energy density were studied. The results showed that maximum engineering stress and stored energy density can be used as …

Electromechanical Instability In Silicone-And Acrylate-Based Dielectric Elastomers, Liang Jiang, Yanfen Shou, Shaojuan Chen, Jianwei Ma, Tony Betts, Stephen Jerrams Jan 2017

Electromechanical Instability In Silicone-And Acrylate-Based Dielectric Elastomers, Liang Jiang, Yanfen Shou, Shaojuan Chen, Jianwei Ma, Tony Betts, Stephen Jerrams

Articles

Electromechanical instability (EMI) is regarded as a significant factor in preventing dielectric elastomers (DEs) fromachieving large voltage-induced deformations. In this study, the strain-stiffening effect was used to control the occurrence of EMI in DEs. The results show that the stretching ratio required to provide a feasible strain-stiffening effect in silicone rubber (SR) was smaller than that needed for a commercial DE material, VHB 4910. The experimental data were compared with currently used models for the simulation of EMI in DEs. We found that EMI could be eliminated in the deformation of these elastomers when pre-stretching was used. Through the application …

Humanizing Intellectual Property: Moving Beyond The Natural Rights Property Focus, J. Janewa Osei-Tutu Jan 2017

Humanizing Intellectual Property: Moving Beyond The Natural Rights Property Focus, J. Janewa Osei-Tutu

Articles

This Article compares the natural rights property framework with the international human rights framework for intellectual property. These two frameworks share a common theoretical basis in the natural rights tradition but appear to lead to conflicting outcomes. Proponents of natural rights to intellectual property tend to support more expansive intellectual property protections. Yet, advocates of a human rights approach to intellectual property contend that human rights will have a moderating influence on intellectual property law. This Article is among the first scholarly works to explore the apparent conflict between these two important frameworks for intellectual property. It concludes that a …

Government Employee Religion, Caroline Mala Corbin Jan 2017

Government Employee Religion, Caroline Mala Corbin

Articles

Picture a county clerk who refuses to issue a marriage license to an LGBT couple or a city bus driver who insists on wearing a hijab. The clerk is fired for failing to fulfill job responsibilities and the bus driver for violating official dress codes. Both claim that their termination violates the First Amendment speech and religion clauses.

There is a well-developed First Amendment government employee speech jurisprudence. Less developed is the doctrine and literature for First Amendment government employee religion. The existing Free Exercise Clause jurisprudence usually does not specifically account for the government employee context. This Article attempts …

Inner-City Anti-Poverty Campaigns, Anthony V. Alfieri Jan 2017

Inner-City Anti-Poverty Campaigns, Anthony V. Alfieri

Articles

This article offers a defense of outsider, legal-political intervention and community triage in inner-city anti-poverty campaigns under circumstances of widespread urban social disorganization, public and private sector neglect, and nonprofit resource scarcity. In mounting this defense, the Article revisits the roles of lawyers, nonprofit legal services organizations, and university-housed law school clinics in contemporary anti-poverty, civil rights, and social justice movements, in part by chronicling the emergence of a faith-based municipal equity movement in Miami, Florida. The Article proceeds in four parts. Part I introduces the notion of community triage as a means of addressing the impoverished and segregated aftermath …

Lessons Learned Too Well: Anonymity In A Time Of Surveillance, A. Michael Froomkin Jan 2017

Lessons Learned Too Well: Anonymity In A Time Of Surveillance, A. Michael Froomkin

Articles

It is no longer reasonable to assume that electronic communications can be kept private from governments or private-sector actors. In theory, encryption can protect the content of such communications, and anonymity can protect the communicator's identity. But online anonymity-one of the two most important tools that protect online communicative freedom-is under practical and legal attack all over the world. Choke-point regulation, online identification requirements, and data-retention regulations combine to make anonymity very difficult as a practical matter and, in many countries, illegal. Moreover, key internet intermediaries further stifle anonymity by requiring users to disclose their real names.

This Article traces …

You Say Embargo, I Say Bloqueo - A Policy Recommendation For Promoting Foreign Direct Investment And Safeguarding Human Rights In Cuba, Marcia Narine Weldon Jan 2017

You Say Embargo, I Say Bloqueo - A Policy Recommendation For Promoting Foreign Direct Investment And Safeguarding Human Rights In Cuba, Marcia Narine Weldon

Articles

The United States is the only major industrialized nation that restricts trade with Cuba. Although President Obama issued several executive orders that have facilitated limited trade (and President Trump has scaled some back), an embargo remains in place, and by law, Congress cannot lift it until, among other things, the Cuban government commits to democratization and human rights reform. Unfortunately, the Cuban and U.S. governments fundamentally disagree on the definition of "human rights, " and neither side has shown a willingness to compromise. Meanwhile, although some US. investors clamor to join their European and Canadian counterparts in expanding operations in …

The Weaponized Lawsuit Against The Media: Litigation Funding As A New Threat To Journalism, Lili Levi Jan 2017

The Weaponized Lawsuit Against The Media: Litigation Funding As A New Threat To Journalism, Lili Levi

Articles

This Article identifies a new front in the current war against the media one in which billionaire private actors clandestinely fund other people's lawsuits in an attempt to censor press entities. The use of strategic litigation to shutter media outlets constitutes a major threat to the expressive order. And the current climate of press failures, institutional disaggregation, decreasing accountability journalism, and declining public trust-the very vulnerability of the press today-significantly amplifies the chilling impact of strategic third party funding. It does so whether the strategy is death-by-a-thousand litigations or titanic, bankruptcy-inducing damage verdicts.

Still, contrary to the assertions of both …

Constitutional Challenges And Regulatory Opportunities For State Climate Policy Innovation, Felix Mormann Jan 2017

Constitutional Challenges And Regulatory Opportunities For State Climate Policy Innovation, Felix Mormann

Articles

This Article explores constitutional limits and regulatory openings for innovative state policies to mitigate climate change by promoting climate-friendly, renewable energy. In the absence of a comprehensive federal policy approach to climate change and clean energy, more and more states are stepping in to fill the policy void. Already, nearly thirty states have adopted renewable portfolio standards that create markets for solar, wind, and other clean electricity. To help populate these markets, a few pioneering states have recently started using feed-in tariffs that offer eligible generators above-market rates for their clean, renewable power.

But renewable portfolio standards, feed-in tariffs, and …

The Impact Of L1 Writing System On Esl Knowledge Of Vowel And Consonant Spellings, Katherine I. Martin Jan 2017

The Impact Of L1 Writing System On Esl Knowledge Of Vowel And Consonant Spellings, Katherine I. Martin

Articles

Orthographic knowledge, the general ability to learn, store, and use information about the orthographic form of words (Stanovich & West, 1989), is a crucial skill for supporting literacy. Although the development of first language (L1) orthographic awareness is impacted by the characteristics of a learner’s L1 writing system, relatively little is known about what impact the L1 may have on second language (L2) orthographic awareness. In this study, English language learners from three L1s (French, Hebrew, Mandarin Chinese), plus L1 English speakers, were tested on their English spelling knowledge using a word-pseudohomophone discrimination task. In addition to allowing for the …
