Regioisomers of the functional group of the main ligand (L) on a series of [Ru(phen)2L]2+and [Ru(bpy)2L]2+ complexes, where phen is 1,10 phenanthroline and bpy is 2,2′-bipyridine, were synthesised to investigate the interaction with deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) as potential therapeutics. UV–Vis binding titrations, thermal denaturation and circular dichroism were used to evaluate their interaction with DNA. The conclusions indicated the significance of the auxiliary ligand; especially 1,10-phenanthroline has on the binding constants (Kb). The systematic variation of auxiliary ligand(phen or bpy), and polypyridyl ligand (4-(1H-Imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthrolin-2-yl)benzonitrile (CPIP), 2-(4-formylphenyl)imidazo[4,5-f] [1,10] phenanthroline (FPIP), 2-(4-bromophenyl)imidazo[4,5-f][1,10]phenanthroline (BPIP) and 2-(4-nitrophenyl)imidazo[4,5-f] [1,10] phenanthroline (NPIP), split in terms of …

European Power Markets–A Journey Towards Efficiency, Lucia Morales, Jim Hanly Jan 2018

European Power Markets–A Journey Towards Efficiency, Lucia Morales, Jim Hanly

Articles

The liberalization process of European electricity markets has been a work in progress since early reforms beginning in the 1990's. A key goal of these reforms was to enable increased integration and attendant efficiency within these markets. In this paper, we analyse three major European electricity markets - (APXUK, NordPool and Phelix) – before and after the 2009/72/EC Directive was introduced, to examine the extent to which those markets are efficient and whether they have become more integrated. We find little evidence of significant long run relationships between the different markets. We also find that the NordPool and Phelix markets …

A Fresh Start To Bankruptcy Exemptions, Gary E. Sullivan Jan 2018

A Fresh Start To Bankruptcy Exemptions, Gary E. Sullivan

Articles

Bankruptcy has broadly failed to deliver "fresh starts" to debtors Too often debtors return to states of financial distress following bankruptcy Although bankruptcy delivers a clean slate through the discharge of debts the efficacy of a fresh start depends on a second factor property exemptions While discharge frees a debtor from her existing debts property exemptions determine what property the debtor retains upon exiting bankruptcy For many debtors insufficient and suboptimal property exemption laws undermine fresh starts In fact under current bankruptcy law each state can reject federal bankruptcy exemptions by opting out Bankrupt debtors in "optout" states are forced …

Why Exempting Negligent Doctors May Reduce Suicide: An Empirical Analysis, J. Shahar Dillbary, Griffin Edwards, Fredrick E. Vars

Articles

This article is the first to empirically analyze the impact of tort liability on suicide Counterintuitively our analysis shows that suicide rates increase when potential tort liability is expanded to include psychiatrists "” the very defendants who would seem best able to prevent suicide Using a 50state panel regression for 1981 to 2013 we find that states that would hold psychiatrists but not other doctors liable for malpractice resulting in a suicide experienced a 128 increase in suicides The effect is even stronger 168 when we include controls We do not believe this is because suicide prevention doesn't work Rather …

The Origins (And Fragility) Of Judicial Independence, Tara Leigh Grove Jan 2018

The Origins (And Fragility) Of Judicial Independence, Tara Leigh Grove

Articles

The federal judiciary today takes certain things for granted Political actors will not attempt to remove Article III judges outside the impeachment process they will not obstruct federal court orders and they will not tinker with the Supreme Court's size in order to pack it with likeminded Justices And yet a closer look reveals that these "selfevident truths" of judicial independence are neither selfevident nor necessary implications of our constitutional text structure and history This Article demonstrates that many government officials once viewed these courtcurbing measures as not only constitutionally permissible but also desirable and politically viable methods of "checking" …

Developing Deaf Students Fraction Skills Requires Understanding Magnitude And Whole Number Division, Keith Mousley, Ronald R. Kelly Jan 2018

Developing Deaf Students Fraction Skills Requires Understanding Magnitude And Whole Number Division, Keith Mousley, Ronald R. Kelly

Articles

Research has shown that fraction magnitude and whole number division are important precursors to learning and understanding fractions. Deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students are consistently challenged with learning fractions from K-12 through college. Sixty DHH college students were tested for both their understanding of magnitude between two fractions and their ability to calculate whole number division. The results showed that both understanding the magnitude between two fractions and whole number division are significantly associated with accurately calculating arithmetic functions of fractions with like denominators and different denominators that required them to add, subtract, multiply, and divide two fractions. Understanding fraction …

Measurements Of Radiation Pressure Owing To The Grating Momentum, Ying-Ju Lucy Chu, Eric M. Jansson, Grover A. Swartzlander

Articles

The radiation pressure force on a nearly single-order diffraction grating was measured for a transmission grating near the Littrow angles at wavelengths of 808 and 447 nm. The component of force parallel to the grating agreed well with our prediction, being proportional to the product of the grating order and the ratio of the wavelength and grating period. The normal component of force varied with the incident angle, vanishing near the Littrow angle as expected. The measurements verify a correspondence between the Fourier grating momentum and the mechanical momentum. This Letter provides opportunities for in-space fly-by-light sailcraft as well as …

Articles

The omentum is enriched with pro-inflammatory effector memory CD8+ T cells in patients with the obesity-associated malignancy, esophagogastric adenocarcinoma (EAC) and we have identified the chemokine macrophage inflammatory protein-1alpha as a key player in their active migration to this inflamed tissue. More recently, others have established that subsets of memory CD8+ T cells can be classified based on their surface expression of CX3CR1; the specific receptor for the inflammatory chemokine fractalkine. CD8+ T cells expressing intermediate levels (CX3CR1INT) are defined as peripheral memory, those expressing the highest levels (CX3CR1HI) are effector memory/terminally differentiated and those lacking CX3CR1 (CX3CR1NEG) are classified …

Articles

HPIV3 is a respiratory virus causing airway diseases, including pneumonia, croup, and bronchiolitis, during infancy and childhood. Currently there is no effective vaccine or anti-viral therapy for this virus. Studies have suggested that poor T cell proliferation following HPIV3 infection is responsible for impaired immunological memory associated with this virus. We have previously demonstrated that NK cells mediate regulation of T cell proliferation during HPIV3 infection. Here we add to these studies by demonstrating that the regulation of T cell proliferation during HPIV3 infection is mediated via NK receptors NKp44 and NKp46 and involves the surface glycoprotein haemagglutinin-neuraminidase but not …
