Children And Television Advertising: A Cognitive Development Perspective, Darach Turley, Helen Gallagher

While the population growth rate in Ireland appears at least temporarily to have ground to a halt, the fact remains that this country will have to cherish and cater for a singularly sizeable children’s market for the next decade. This article begins with a qualitative examination of Irish advertising houses’ views on their respective outputs and target groups. Central to the process of communicating with the children’s market is the need to fully appreciate its heterogeneity. Psychologically speaking the “children’s market” is a misnomer. To this end, a series of questions are administered to a sample of Dublin children to …
On (3, K) Ramsey Graphs: Theoretical And Computational Results, Stanislaw Radziszowski, Donald Kreher
On (3, K) Ramsey Graphs: Theoretical And Computational Results, Stanislaw Radziszowski, Donald Kreher
Articles
A (3,k,n,e) Ramsey graph is a triangle-free graph on n vertices with e edges and no independent set of size k. Similarly, a (3,k)-, (3,k,n)- or (3,k,n,e)-graph is a (3,k,n,e) Ramsey graph for some nand e. In the first part of the paper we derive an explicit formula for the minimum number of edges in any (3,k,n)graph for n ≤ 3(k-I), i.e. a partial formula for the function e(3,k,n) investigated in [3,5,7]. We prove some general properties of minimum (3,k,n)- graphs with e(3,k,n) edges and present a construction of minimum (3,k+I,3k-I,5k-5)-graphs for k ≥ 2 and minimum (3,k+1,3k,5k)-graphs for k …

Employment At Will: The French Experience As A Basis For Reform, Madeleine M. Plasencia
Articles
Roughly one-quarter of the workers in the United States are represented by unions, leaving three-quarters subject to the vicissitudes of the employment-at-will doctrine.' At-will employees, as a general matter, lack protection against dismissal without cause.2 That is, an employer may dismiss an "at will" employee without notice, "for good reason, bad reason or no reason at all," so long as the proffered reasons for dismissal do not violate random whistle-blowing provisions or federal and state anti-discrimination statutes.' The mirror image of the employer's right to dismiss at will is the right of an employee who was hired to perform work …

Beyond The Republican Revival, Cass R. Sunstein
Beyond The Republican Revival, Cass R. Sunstein
Articles
In this Article, Professor Sunstein describes those aspects of republicanism that have the strongest claim to contemporary support, outlines the role of republican thought in the founding period, and explores some of the implications of republicanism for modern public law. Sunstein claims that the basic republican commitments involve (1) deliberation in government; (2) political equality; (3) universality, or agreement as a regulative ideal; and (4) citizenship. Professor Sunstein contends that all of these commitments played an important role during the founding period, generating a distinctive conception of governance. In his view, the common opposition between liberalism and republicanism is a …

Redefining The Antitrust Labor Exemption, Daniel J. Gifford
Redefining The Antitrust Labor Exemption, Daniel J. Gifford
Articles
Congress urgently needs to reformulate the antitrust labor exemption. Courts and legal scholars alike 1 have largely neglected the legal significance of the impact of industry-wide collective bargaining on price-output decisions in concentrated industries. They have, moreover, attended even less to the skewing tendencies produced by the almost universally practiced seniority system on labor union bargaining strategies.

Because of persecution, civil war, and economic despair, millions of people flee from their homes and go to live in other countries where they can stabilize their lives and find a safe place for themselves and their families. In 1998, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimated the number of people fleeing their home countries to exceed 22 million. 1 The right to seek and enjoy asylum is a well established principle in international law. 2 It has, however, been interpreted consistently as the right of the sovereign state to grant or deny asylum to those within its territory, …
