Cosmology With Interacting Dark Energy, Manasse Mbonye Jan 2004

Cosmology With Interacting Dark Energy, Manasse Mbonye

Articles

The early cosmic inflation, when taken along with the recent observations that the universe is currently dominated by a low density vacuum energy, leads to at least two potential problems which modern cosmology must address. First, there is the old cosmological constant problem, with a new twist: the coincidence problem. Secondly, cosmology still lacks a model to predict the observed current cosmic acceleration and to determine whether or not there is a future exit out of this state (as previously in the inflationary case). This constitutes (what is called here) a dynamical problem. In this article a framework is proposed …

Performance Analysis Of Improved Methodology For Incorporation Of Spatial/Spectral Variability In Synthetic Hyperspectral Imagery, Neil W. Scanlan, John Schott, Scott D. Brown Jan 2004

Performance Analysis Of Improved Methodology For Incorporation Of Spatial/Spectral Variability In Synthetic Hyperspectral Imagery, Neil W. Scanlan, John Schott, Scott D. Brown

Articles

Synthetic imagery has traditionally been used to support sensor design by enabling design engineers to pre-evaluate image products during the design and development stages. Increasingly exploitation analysts are looking to synthetic imagery as a way to develop and test exploitation algorithms before image data are available from new sensors. Even when sensors are available, synthetic imagery can significantly aid in algorithm development by providing a wide range of "ground truthed" images with varying illumination, atmospheric, viewing and scene conditions. One limitation of synthetic data is that the background variability is often too bland. It does not exhibit the spatial and …

Latent-Image Formation In Tabular Agbr Grains: Experimental Studies, Richard Hailstone, J. French, Rene Dekeyzer Jan 2004

Latent-Image Formation In Tabular Agbr Grains: Experimental Studies, Richard Hailstone, J. French, Rene Dekeyzer

Articles

Five tabular-grain AgBr emulsions of varying grain thickness were studied. Two were chemically sensitized in the presence of a blue spectral sensitizing dye, whereas the other three were chemically sensitized in the presence of a green spectral sensitizing dye. A companion set of emulsions chemically sensitized in the absence of dye was also prepared. Internal image development of the unsensitized emulsions showed substantial internal image in one emulsion, but minor amounts in the other emulsions. After chemical sensitization, there was no detectable internal image in any of the emulsions. Reciprocity failure data from 10^–4 to 10^3 s showed that the …

Sulfide Centers On (111) Agbr Surfaces: Effect Of Tetraazaindene On Electronic Properties, Richard Hailstone, A. Gary Difrancesco, Monica Tyne Jan 2004

Sulfide Centers On (111) Agbr Surfaces: Effect Of Tetraazaindene On Electronic Properties, Richard Hailstone, A. Gary Difrancesco, Monica Tyne

Articles

Sensitometric and spectroscopic techniques are used to study the effect of 4-hydroxy- 6-methyl-1,3,3a,7-tetraazaindene (TAI) during the sulphur sensitization of AgBr octahedra. TAI increased the speed of an oversensitized emulsion, causing it to have a speed comparable with the optimally sulfur-sensitized emulsion at high irradiance. TAI decreased the absorption by sulphide centres at 1.5 mmole concentration but not at 1 mmole. The long wavelength sensitivity (>500 nm) increased at 1 mmole TAI concentration, but decreased at 1.5 mmole TAI concentration, whereas the activation energy for this response was reduced at both TAI levels. These results are interpreted using a model …

Monolithically Integrated Si/Sige Resonant Interband Tunnel Diode/Cmos Demonstrating Low Voltage Mobile Operation, S. Sudirgo, R.P. Nandgaonkar, B. Curanovic

Articles

The first demonstration of the monolithic integration of CMOS and Si/SiGe resonant interband tunnel diodes (RITD) with negative differential resistance (NDR) is reported in this paper. The Si/SiGe RITDs exhibited a peak-to-valley current ratio (PVCR) up to 2.8 and peak current density (Jp) of 0.26 kA/cm2 at room temperature. This study focused on the utilization of a pair of tunnel diodes connected in series to form a latch. Employing a FET to supply current into the latch, a RITD/NMOS monostable–bistable transition logic element (MOBILE) was realized. The latch exhibited a voltage swing of 84% at an applied supply voltage of …

Functional Derivatives Of [4-Amino-N,N'-Bis-(2-Hydroxybenzidene)-1,2-Phenylenediaminato][N,N'-Bis(2-Hydroxybenzidene)-1,2-Phenylenediaminato]Zirconium(Iv),Zr(Adsp)(Rdsp), For Use As Pendent Groups, Marvin Illingsworth, Wei Wang, Kenneth Hughes

Articles

The objective of this research was to prepare a variety of functional group derivatives of the eight-coordinate complex [4-amino-N,N'-bis(2-hydroxybenzidene)-1,2-phenylenediaminato] [N,N'-bis(2-hydroxybenzidene)-1,2-phenylenediaminato]zirconium(IV), Zr(adsp)(dsp), for use as pendent groups on polymers. The synthetic method involved reaction of the free ligands di-2-hydroxybenzylidende-4-nitro-N,N'-phenylenediamine [H2(ndsp)] and a functional group derivative of di-2-hydroxybenzylidene-N,N'-phenylenediamine [H2(Rdsp), R = methyl, 3-methoxy, 5-methoxy, cyano, pyridyl nitrogen, and 3-fluoro substituents] with zirconium tetra-n-butoxide in 1:1:1 mole ratio, followed by column separation on silica gel and hydrogenation of the nitro group to amino group using hydrogen gas over Pd/C catalyst. The order of the latter two steps was chosen to affect the best …

Enhancing Both Network And User Performance For Netwoks Supporting Best Effort Traffic, Shanchieh Yang, Gustavo De Veciana Jan 2004

Enhancing Both Network And User Performance For Netwoks Supporting Best Effort Traffic, Shanchieh Yang, Gustavo De Veciana

Articles

With a view on improving user-perceived performance on networks supporting best effort flows, e.g., multimedia/ data file transfers, we propose a family of bandwidth allocation criteria that depends on the residual work of on-going transfers. Analysis and simulations show that allocating bandwidth in this fashion can significantly improve the user-perceived delay, bit transmission delay, and throughput over traditional approaches, e.g., by 58% on an 80% loaded linear network. A simple implementation based on TCP Reno, exemplifies how one might approach practically realizing such gains. We discuss several other advantages of incorporating such differentiation at the transport level. In particular we …

Spectral Redundancy In A Six-Ink Ink Jet Printer, Mitchell Rosen, Edward Hattenberger, Noboru Ohta Jan 2004

Spectral Redundancy In A Six-Ink Ink Jet Printer, Mitchell Rosen, Edward Hattenberger, Noboru Ohta

Articles

We demonstrate for the multi- ink printers investigated that there are many spectral reflectances that can be produced approximately by a single printer through a large variety of different ink combinations. This spectral redundancy was evaluated for a pair of six- ink ink jet CMYKGO printers. Through use of the lookup tables, density maps were built illustrating the six- dimensional distribution of redundancy throughout colorant space. A tolerance of 0.01 RMS showed none of the inks in our CMYKGO systems to be fully replaceable by combinations of the other inks. However, when the tolerance was relaxed to 0.02 RMS, the …

A Psychophysical Experiment Evaluating The Color And Spatial Image Quality Of Several Multispectral Image Capture Techniques, Ellen Day, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin Jan 2004

A Psychophysical Experiment Evaluating The Color And Spatial Image Quality Of Several Multispectral Image Capture Techniques, Ellen Day, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin

Articles

Theoretically, there can be a compromise between color and spatial image quality for multispectral imaging: Increasing the number of channels increases spectral and colorimetric accuracy, that is, color quality increases; decreasing the number of channels reduces image noise and other spatial artifacts, that is, spatial image quality increases. Two paired comparison psychophysical experiments were performed to scale color and spatial image quality in order to better understand this compromise. Test targets, a watercolor painting, and several dioramas were imaged using three-, six-, and 31- channel image acquisition systems. One of the three- channel systems was a professional grade trichromatic digital …

Six Color Printer Characterization Using An Optimized Cellular Yule-Nielsen Spectral Neugebauer Model, Yongda Chen, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin Jan 2004

Six Color Printer Characterization Using An Optimized Cellular Yule-Nielsen Spectral Neugebauer Model, Yongda Chen, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin

Articles

A printer characterization attempts to map, in both directions, corresponding points in colorant and colorimetric spaces. Two limiting approaches are used: analytical models based on a small number of samples, and direct measurement and interpolation requiring many samples. For six-color printers, the former approach often has insufficient accuracy whereas the latter approach requires an excessive number of samples. An intermediate approach was used to characterize a CMYKGO ink jet printer, the Cellular-Yule-Nielsen-Spectral-Neugebauer (CYNSN) model. This model included an optimized Yule-Nielsen n value and onedimensional look-up tables between digital data and effective area coverage for each colorant. Each colorant was divided …

Technical Assistance Programs And The Diffusion Of Environmental Technologies In The Printing Industry: The Case Of Smes, Sandra Rothenberg, Monica Becker Jan 2004

Technical Assistance Programs And The Diffusion Of Environmental Technologies In The Printing Industry: The Case Of Smes, Sandra Rothenberg, Monica Becker

Articles

The goal of this article is to better understand the diffusion of environmentally preferable manufacturing technology (as distinct from pollution control technology) in small-and medium-sized firms (SMEs) and the influence of technical assistance programs on the diffusion of these technologies. The authors draw their insights from the printing industry, a sector where small firms predominate. They find that smaller firms lag slightly in the adoption of environmental technologies. With regard to technical assistance, they find that printers identify suppliers and other industry sources as more useful than government in providing information that leads to active exploration of new environmental technologies. …

A Comparative Analysis Of Quality Management In Us And International Universities, Delvin Grant, A. Erhan Mergen, Stanley Widrick Jan 2004

A Comparative Analysis Of Quality Management In Us And International Universities, Delvin Grant, A. Erhan Mergen, Stanley Widrick

Articles

The paper compares the implementations of quality management programmes of higher education in US and international academic institutions. The comparison is based on the use of formal quality models such as ISO 9000 and Malcolm Baldrige Criteria, Quality-of-Design, Quality-of-Conformance, and Quality-of-Performance. An interesting outcome was the absence of Quality-of-Performance among US universities.

Beware Of Lawyers Bearing Gifts:A Critical Evaluation Of The Proposals On Fundamental Rights In The Draft Constitutional Treaty., Stephen Carruthers

Articles

The article assesses how far the provisions on fundamental rights contained in the draft Treaty Establishing a Constitution for Europe advance the objectives of promotion of the rule of law, transparency, a balanced relationship between the Union and national legal orders, and effective judicial redress. Argues that while the proposed accession of the Union to the European Convention on Human Rights 1950 and incorporation of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union 2000, notwithstanding justiciability problems, deserve support, the retention of the general principles of law as a source of fundamental rights and the suggested amendments to the …

Absolutism And The Confidentiality Debate: Confidentiality And Journalists Sources,, Michael Foley

Articles

Sources confidentiality is the one absolute in journalism. A guarantee never to divulge the name of a confidential sources is part of all codes of conduct and is the one clause that never contains a qualification, such as 'save where the public interest demands otherwise'. However, there are problems with this rule, especially when it is used by public relations practitioners or is used when it is clearly not in the public interest.

Colonialism And Journalism In Ireland, Michael Foley Jan 2004

Colonialism And Journalism In Ireland, Michael Foley

Articles

Irish journalism developed during the 19th century at a time of tremendous change. While journalists were involved in the debates about nationalism, both as commentators and in many cases activists, they also developed a journalism practice that corresponded to the professional norms of journalists in Britain and the United States. It would appear that the middle-class nature of Irish journalists meant there was a dual pressure towards professionalising journalism and fighting for legislative independence. Both factors came together in the development of a public sphere, where professional journalists were involved in creating public opinion.

The Power Of High Explosives In A Confined Space, Tom Clonan Jan 2004

The Power Of High Explosives In A Confined Space, Tom Clonan

Articles

ANALYSIS: When terrorists bomb packed trains, the injuries are horrific, reports Tom Clonan The bombs that ripped through three Spanish commuter trains yesterday were especially lethal when detonated in such a confined space. The type of explosives used would appear to have been high-explosive devices of a type used previously by terrorist groups such as Eta and the Provisional IRA. Indeed, Spanish police foiled an attempt to place a 25kg high-explosive device on the regional San Sebastian-Madrid train as recently as December of last year. Such devices are simply assembled and consist of three main components. The bulk explosive charge …

Us Missile Strikes On High Value Targets: Zarqawi, Tom Clonan

Articles

Wednesday’s precision air strike on Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and his spiritual advisor Sheik al-Rahman appears to have been the result of a combined Iraqi and US intelligence effort. A US special-forces team - ‘Task Force 145’ - acting on a tip-off from Iraqi sources, is said to have identified Zarqawi’s safe house 8 km north of Baquba early on Wednesday afternoon. ‘Task Force 145’ - under the direction of US Joint Special Forces Command - is a unit whose sole mission is to locate and neutralise ‘high-value’ or ‘VIP’ insurgent targets within Iraq. The unit is believed to be co-located …

Images Of Us Troops Abusing Iraqis Constitute War Crimes, Tom Clonan

Articles

Article three of the Geneva Convention in relation to the treatment of Prisoners of War is explicit and unequivocal. It prohibits ‘violence to life, in particular murder of all kinds, mutilation, cruel treatment and torture’. It also outlaws ‘outrages upon personal dignity, in particular, humiliating and degrading treatment’. Accordingly, photographs of bound and hooded Iraqi prisoners, recently published by the print and electronic media, if genuine, represent crime scenes. Article four of the Geneva Convention defines in detail those categories of individuals who qualify as Prisoners of War including ‘members of armed forces’, ‘members of organised resistance groups’ and ‘members …

The Reflective Practitioner: Critical Theory And The Professionalisation Of Pr, Tom Clonan Jan 2004

The Reflective Practitioner: Critical Theory And The Professionalisation Of Pr, Tom Clonan

Articles

The Reflective Practitioner: Critical Theory and the Professionalisation of PR Abstract The purpose of this article is to outline the relevance that critical theory has for the practice of public relations and the professional formation of its practitioners. The article provides an overview of one of the key theoretical perspectives articulated in the political economy approach to communication - that of the relationship between powerful elites in society and media professionals. The author seeks to explore the hypothesised relationships said to exist between power brokers in society and the 'organs of cultural production' - with particular emphasis on media relations. …

Couple Dynamic In Household Tourism Decision Making: Women As The Gatekeepers?, Ziene Mottiar, Deirdre Quinn

Articles

The purpose of this study is to explore household tourism decision making. There is an extensive literature on consumer choice in general. In terms of tourism, the main focus has been on motivational factors. However, as part of the emergence of a literature which studies the issues of tourism and gender, there are some authors who focus on holiday decision making. In this context the focus here is the distinctive roles and power relations within a couple. The study is exploratory in nature and employs a self-administered questionnaire. It is concluded that the overall consumption of a holiday is largely …

More than half of the world’s population lives in cities now, and the importance of efficient urban land use and ‘smart’ development has become ever greater over recent decades. Cities are the key centres of human activity and the engines of economic growth in the world today. A world which has been drastically transformed by rapid technological change, expanding globalisation, profound cultural shifts and new economic perspectives. One, moreover, bring a whole range of fresh opportunities and challenges. Traditional ways in which cities were planned and managed increasingly …

Solids Whose Parallel Cross-Sections Are Regular Polygons, Matthew Coppenbarger Jan 2004

Solids Whose Parallel Cross-Sections Are Regular Polygons, Matthew Coppenbarger

Articles

Given a solid in R3 whose base is contained in the xy-plane and parallel cross-sections perpendicular to the xy-plane are regular polygons, the volume and surface area are determined. Additionally, the asymptotic behavior of the solid as the number of sides of the cross-sectional polygon increases is analyzed (Refer to PDF file for exact formulas).
