Integral Field Spectroscopy Of 23 Spiral Bulges, Dan Batcheldor, David J. Axon, David Merritt, M. A. Hughes, A. Marconi, J. Binney, A. Capetti, M. Merrifield, C. Scarlata, W. Sparks

Articles

We have obtained Integral Field Spectroscopy for 23 spiral bulges using INTEGRAL on the William Herschel Telescope and SPIRAL on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. This is the first 2D survey directed solely at the bulges of spiral galaxies. Eleven galaxies of the sample do not have previous measurements of the stellar velocity dispersion([sigma]*) . These data are designed to complement our Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph program for estimating black hole masses in the range 10[to the 6th power] −10[to the 8th power] M⊙ using gas kinematics from nucleated disks. These observations will serve to derive the stellar dynamical bulge properties using …

Ethics Of Data Mining, Jack Cook Jan 2005

Ethics Of Data Mining, Jack Cook

Articles

Decision makers thirst for answers to questions. As more data is gathered, more questions are posed. Which customers are most likely to respond positively to a marketing campaign, product price change or new product offering? How will the competition react? Which loan applicants are most likely or least likely to default? The ability raise questions, even those that cannot currently be answered, is a characteristic of a good decision maker. Decision makers no longer have the luxury of making decisions based on gut feel or intuition. Decisions must be supported by data; otherwise decision makers can expect to be questioned …

Rfid: Revolutionizing Inventory Management Across The Supply Chain, Jack Cook, Laura Cook Jan 2005

Rfid: Revolutionizing Inventory Management Across The Supply Chain, Jack Cook, Laura Cook

Articles

Radio frequency identification (RFID) is revolutionizing asset tracking, inventory management, and supply chain execution. RFID has the ability to track inventory with almost no human intervention, thus offering enormous potential for better inventory management across the supply chain. This paper discusses the application of RFID within four settings: (1) health care facilities, specifically hospitals; (2) tracking pharmaceuticals from manufacturing throughout distribution; (3) managing retain supply chains; and (4) tracking personnel, assets, and inventory in the military.

Credit Cards On Campus: Academic Inquiry, Objective Empiricism, Or Advocacy Research?, Robert Manning, Ray Kirshak Jan 2005

Credit Cards On Campus: Academic Inquiry, Objective Empiricism, Or Advocacy Research?, Robert Manning, Ray Kirshak

Articles

Professors John M. Barron and Michael E. Staten's article in Vol. 34, N. 3 of the Journal of Student Financial Aid, "Usage of Credit Cards Received through College Student Marketing Programs," purports to "provide benchmark measures of college student credit card usage" (p. 7). Based on empirical analysis of proprietary industry data, they conclude that "There is no evidence... that young adults who received credit cards through student-marketing programs are misusing cards so frequently as to warrant singling them out as a group for special protections from marketing solicitations" (p. 25). Their key assertions, which portray on-campus credit card marketing …

Emerging Technologies And The Future Of The Accounting Profession, Thomas Tribunella, M. Pamela Neely, Heidi Tribunella Jan 2005

Emerging Technologies And The Future Of The Accounting Profession, Thomas Tribunella, M. Pamela Neely, Heidi Tribunella

Articles

In this paper we investigate the differences between practitioner and academic interests in emerging technologies. We compare and contrast the results of a faculty survey to the AICPA's Top Technology list. It appears that academics and practitioners have significantly different interests concerning emerging technologies. Furthermore, technology interests for both groups change over time. We then discuss the problems that arise from the differing points of view and suggest some possible solutions.

Shareholder Bylaws, Shareholder Nominations, And Poison Pills, Brett Mcdonnell Jan 2005

Shareholder Bylaws, Shareholder Nominations, And Poison Pills, Brett Mcdonnell

Articles

Shareholder bylaws limiting or directing board action raise a tough and fascinating question of statutory interpretation under state law as well as an important policy question. In particular, over the last decade shareholders have sought to use bylaws to limit poison pills and to grant shareholders access to the corporate proxy materials to nominate directors. This paper argues that an expansive, although not unlimited, shareholder power to enact bylaws is both a plausible interpretation of Delaware's statutory scheme and desirable as a policy matter. Shareholder bylaws that set general rules of corporate governance and procedure should be valid unless more …

Intimacy And Economic Exchange, Jill Elaine Hasday Jan 2005

Intimacy And Economic Exchange, Jill Elaine Hasday

Articles

The current legal debate about the regulation of economic exchange between intimates mistakenly assumes that the law does not countenance such exchange to any notable extent. This assumption is so widely held that it unites otherwise disparate anticommodification and pro-market scholars. Both groups agree that the law maintains a strict boundary between economic exchange and intimacy, and disagree only on whether to applaud or criticize that boundary. Both overlook or underemphasize the degree to which the law already permits economic exchange within intimate relationships. The current debate's focus on whether the law should enforce economic exchanges between intimates misses at …

Bad Arguments Against Gay Marriage, Dale Carpenter Jan 2005

Bad Arguments Against Gay Marriage, Dale Carpenter

Articles

This article claims that three common arguments against gay marriage - the definitional, procreation, and slippery-slope arguments - are quite bad, the worst of the lot. The definitional argument asserts that marriage just is the union of one man and one woman, and that the definition alone is a sufficient defense against claims for gay marriage. The procreation argument claims that marriage's central public purpose is to encourage procreation, and so the exclusion of same-sex couples is justified. The slippery-slope argument claims that the acceptance of same-sex marriage logically entails the acceptance of other public policy changes - notably the …

State Interests In Marriage, Interstate Recognition, And Choice Of Law, Brian H. Bix Jan 2005

State Interests In Marriage, Interstate Recognition, And Choice Of Law, Brian H. Bix

Articles

One of the great complications of the current marriage debates is the way that federalism and conflict of law issues interact - both at the level of principle and constitutional doctrine - in the area of marriage and divorce. This article begins by looking at federalism in the context of domestic relations at a general level. It then considers how current family law rules and constitutional constraints complicate the analysis. Finally, it considers the way in which recognizing party choice of law might respond to some, but by no means all, of the problems in the area.

Educational Interpreting: Access And Outcomes, Marc Marschark, Patricia Sapere, Carol Convertino, Rosemarie Seewagen Jan 2005

Educational Interpreting: Access And Outcomes, Marc Marschark, Patricia Sapere, Carol Convertino, Rosemarie Seewagen

Articles

This chapter argues that the assumption that mainstream education—supported by sign language interpreting—can provide deaf students with fair and appropriate public education may be unfounded. It describes research that emphasizes the need to understand better the complex personal and functional interactions of students, instructors, interpreters, and settings if educational interpreting—and interpreted education— is to be optimally beneficial for deaf students.

American College of Management and Technology (ACMT) A simulation of business setting is often present in an educational environment. It helps students understand business environment and the issues businesses are facing. An upgrade of simulation of business setting in an educational environment is an educational environment placed into the real business setting. Hospitality oriented students learn about hotels. Consequently, hotel is the best business setting where hospitality oriented education could be placed.

Minimal Modules Over Valuation Domains, Brendan Goldsmith, P. Zanardo Jan 2005

Minimal Modules Over Valuation Domains, Brendan Goldsmith, P. Zanardo

Articles

Let R be a valuation domain. We say that a torsion-free R-module is minimal if it is isomorphic to all its submodules of finite index. Here, the usual concept of finite index for groups is replaced by the more appropriate (for module theory) definition: a submodule H of the module G is said to be of finite index in G if the quotient G/H is a finitely presented torsion module. We investigate minimality in various settings and show inter alia that over a maximal valuation domain, all torsion-free modules are minimal. Constructions of non-minimal modules are given by utilizing realization …

Adaptive Voip Playout Scheduling: Assessing User Satisfaction, Miroslaw Narbutt, Andrew Kelly, Liam Murphy, Philip Perry Jan 2005

Adaptive Voip Playout Scheduling: Assessing User Satisfaction, Miroslaw Narbutt, Andrew Kelly, Liam Murphy, Philip Perry

Articles

Delay and packet loss dramatically affect the quality of a voice-over-IP (VoIP) call and depend on the playout buffer scheme implemented at the receiver. The choice of playout algorithm can’t be based on statistical metrics without considering the perceived end-to-end conversational speech quality. The authors present a method for evaluating various playout algorithms that extends the Emodel concept by estimating user satisfaction from time-varying transmission impairments. This article evaluates several playout algorithms and shows a correspondence between their results and those obtained via statistical loss and delay metrics.

Micro blasting of cutting tips and tools is a very effective and reliable method of advancing the life of tools under the action of turning, milling, drilling, punching and cutting. This paper outlines the ways in which micro blasted tools, both coated and un coated have benefited from shot blasting and resulted in greater productivity, lower cutting forces, improved surface finish of the work pieces and less machine downtime. The process of micro blasting is discussed in the paper. Its effectiveness depends on many parameters including the shot media ad size, the mechanics of impact and the application of the …

Predict And Provide Vs Explore, Envision And Plan: Transforming The Urban Planning Approach Towards The Future, Elzbieta Krawczyk, John Ratcliffe Jan 2005

Predict And Provide Vs Explore, Envision And Plan: Transforming The Urban Planning Approach Towards The Future, Elzbieta Krawczyk, John Ratcliffe

Articles

Thinking about the future of humanity cannot be separated from thinking about the future of cities. Today, half of the world’s population lives in cities and the number of urban dwellers is constantly growing. On one hand, cities play a key role in generating economic growth; they are cores of human activity and frontiers of technological and cultural progress. On the other, urban areas are a source of a broad range of social and environmental problems and are especially vulnerable to the threats posed by factors such as climate change, terrorism, pandemic, social and cultural clashes. Considering the role and …

Identification And Recovery Of An Asymmetric Calix[4]Arene Tetranitrile Derivative Using Liquid Chromatography And Mass Spectrometry, Benjamin Schazmann, Dermot Diamond Jan 2005

Identification And Recovery Of An Asymmetric Calix[4]Arene Tetranitrile Derivative Using Liquid Chromatography And Mass Spectrometry, Benjamin Schazmann, Dermot Diamond

Articles

A simple analytical LC-MS (Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry) method and associated instrumentation has been adapted for use by the organic chemist to yield mg quantities of target compound from a reaction mixture. Calix[4]arene 3 was identified as representing 51% of total peak area of a reaction mixture containing no less than 10 components, using LC-MS. This peak corresponded to a mass of 878.8, equivalent to a complex of 3 and an ammonium cation. Molecular models further rationalise this observation by showing that the asymmetric binding cavity of 3 is suitable for binding tetrahedral guests like the ammonium ion. By scaling …

E-Procurement In The Aviation Industry: Value Creation Potential Of B2b Emarketplaces, Claudia-Maria Wagner, Bernd Huber, Edward Sweeney, Austin Smyth

Articles

In academic literature, only limited research has been undertaken in exploring the value creation of B2B (Business-to-Business) e-Marketplace models in the aviation industry. The aim of this publication is a theoretical analysis to explore whether or not B2B e-Marketplaces can make a contribution to the achievement of competitive advantage in procurement in the aviation industry. The research focuses on the potential of B2B e-Marketplaces in terms of improving an airline’s competitiveness in its procurement value chain and discusses empirical results from a survey among international e-Marketplace / portal operators

Optimisation Of Calcium Lactate Washing Treatment On Salad-Cut Lettuce: Quality Aspects, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico, Catherine Barry-Ryan, Jesus Maria Frias, Jemina Mulcahy, Gary Henehan Jan 2005

Optimisation Of Calcium Lactate Washing Treatment On Salad-Cut Lettuce: Quality Aspects, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico, Catherine Barry-Ryan, Jesus Maria Frias, Jemina Mulcahy, Gary Henehan

Articles

Markers of quality retention: colour, texture, browning, texture related enzymes and sensory properties, were analysed during storage. The use of high temperatures (50ºC) showed a positive effect on enzymes related to quality maintenance. It reduced the activity of the browning-related enzymes polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase but it increased the activity of pectin methyl esterase, an enzyme involved in the maintenance of texture. High calcium lactate concentrations (3 %) produced a reduction in the respiration rate of the salad-cut lettuce during storage, but also a loss of luminosity and greenness (a*). The use of high temperatures and intermediate calcium lactate concentrations …

Effect Of Temperature On The Kinetic Behaviour Of Polyphenol Oxidase And Peroxidase In Fresh-Cut Lettuce, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico, Catherine Barry-Ryan, Jemina Mulcahy, Gary Henehan, Jesus Maria Frias Jan 2005

Effect Of Temperature On The Kinetic Behaviour Of Polyphenol Oxidase And Peroxidase In Fresh-Cut Lettuce, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico, Catherine Barry-Ryan, Jemina Mulcahy, Gary Henehan, Jesus Maria Frias

Articles

Activity levels for polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and peroxidase (POD) enzymes were exanimate in crude extracts and showed significantly higher values in photosynthetic tissue than in vascular tissue. Time courses at 50 ºC showed a rapid loss of POD activity and a similar but slower loss of PPO activity in all tissue while incubations at 4 ºC and 25 ºC showed no significant loss of activity over the same time period. The thermal treatment of the extracts (50 ºC) caused a decrease in the PPO and POD activities over time, in all the samples. PPO had less dependence on temperature than …

Conformal Properties And Baecklund Transform For The Associated Camassa-Holm Equation, Rossen Ivanov Jan 2005

Conformal Properties And Baecklund Transform For The Associated Camassa-Holm Equation, Rossen Ivanov

Articles

Integrable equations exhibit interesting conformal properties and can be written in terms of the so-called conformal invariants. The most basic and important example is the KdV equation and the corresponding Schwarz-KdV equation. Other examples, including the Camassa-Holm equation and the associated Camassa-Holm equation are investigated in this paper. It is shown that the B¨acklund transform is related to the conformal properties of these equations. Some particular solutions of the Associated Camassa-Holm Equation are discussed also.

Ecology, Morality And Synergism, Thomas Power Jan 2005

Ecology, Morality And Synergism, Thomas Power

Articles

This short essay looks at the views of unorthodox members of three professions. Richard Douthwaite an anti-growth economist, James Lovelock a "mythical" scientist, and Yoneji Masuda, a Japanese guru of the Information Technology age. All three assume a re-orientation of human thinking. Douthwaite's "moral society", Lovelock's "ecological society" and Masuda's "synergistic society" have little basis in reality, despite their intrinsic appeal. Despite the "high knowledge consumption" of an information age, predicted by Masuda, history teaches us that knowledge has always been used by man to gain power and not to better the lot of mankind. There is no reason to …

Cavity-Backed Slot Antenna Array For The Repeater System Of A Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting Service, Byungje Lee, Frances J. Harackiewicz, Byungwoon Jung, Myun-Joo Park Jan 2005

Cavity-Backed Slot Antenna Array For The Repeater System Of A Satellite Digital Multimedia Broadcasting Service, Byungje Lee, Frances J. Harackiewicz, Byungwoon Jung, Myun-Joo Park

Articles

For the repeater system of the satellite digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) service (2630~2655 MHz) requiring a high-gain antenna and enough isolation between antennas, a cavity-backed slot antenna array (CBSAA) fed by a single waveguide is proposed to suppress side lobe level (SLL) and to increase front-to-back ratio (FBR). The SLL and FBR are enhanced with an optimized magnitude ratio of the electric field at each slot and an additional vertical reflector. The measured SLLs in the Hand E-planes are under -33.24 and -35.78 dB, respectively. An FBR over 37.84 dB and a peak gain over 17 dBi are measured. The …
