Guaranteed Payments Made In Kind By A Partnership, Douglas A. Kahn, Faith Cuenin Jan 2005

Guaranteed Payments Made In Kind By A Partnership, Douglas A. Kahn, Faith Cuenin

Articles

Guaranteed payments are payments made by a partnership to a partner for services performed in his partnership capacity or for the use of capital to the extent that the amount of the payment is not determined by reference to the partnership's income. In addition, some distributions made by a partnership in liquidation of a partner's interest in the partnership are treated as guaranteed payments. A guaranteed payment constitutes ordinary income to the partner, and the partnership is allowed a deduction for the payment unless it constitutes a capital expenditure. While guaranteed payments typically are made in cash, it is possible …

Metabolite Fingerprinting In Transgenic Nicotiana Tabacum Altered By The Escherichia Coli Glutamate Dehydrogenase Gene, R. Mungur, A. D. M. Glass, D. B. Goodenow, David A. Lightfoot

Articles

With about 200 000 phytochemicals in existence, identifying those of biomedical significance is a mammoth task. In the postgenomic era, relating metabolite fingerprints, abundances, and profiles to genotype is also a large task. Ion analysis using Fourier transformed ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) may provide a high-throughput approach to measure genotype dependency of the inferred metabolome if reproducible techniques can be established. Ion profile inferred metabolite fingerprints are coproducts. We used FT-ICR-MS-derived ion analysis to examine gdhA (glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH; EC 1.4.1.1)) transgenic Nicotiana tabacum (tobacco) carrying out altered glutamate, amino acid, and carbon metabolisms, that fundamentally alter plant …

Computational Design And Experimental Testing Of A Novel Axial Flow Lvad, Alexandrina Untaroiu, Houston Wood, Paul Allaire Jan 2005

Computational Design And Experimental Testing Of A Novel Axial Flow Lvad, Alexandrina Untaroiu, Houston Wood, Paul Allaire

Articles

Thousands of cardiac failure patients per year in the United States could benefit from long-term mechanical circulatory support as destination therapy. To provide an improvement over currently available devices, we have designed a fully implantable axial-flow ventricular assist device with a magnetically levitated impeller (LEV-VAD). In contrast to currently available devices, the LEV-VAD has an unobstructed blood flow path and no secondary flow regions, generating substantially less retrograde and stagnant flow. The pump design included the extensive use of conventional pump design equations and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling for predicting pressure-flow curves, hydraulic efficiencies, scalar fluid stress levels, exposure …

Modeling Of Electrooptic Polymer Electrical Characteristics In A Three-Layer Optical Waveguide Modulator, Michael Watson, Paul Ashley, Andrew Guenthner Jan 2005

Modeling Of Electrooptic Polymer Electrical Characteristics In A Three-Layer Optical Waveguide Modulator, Michael Watson, Paul Ashley, Andrew Guenthner

Articles

The electrical characteristics of electrooptic polymer waveguide modulators are often described by the bulk reactance of the individual layers. However, the resistance and capacitance between the layers can significantly alter the electrical performance of a waveguide modulator. These interface characteristics are related to the boundary charge density and are strongly affected by the adhesion of the layers in the waveguide stack. An electrical reactance model has been derived to investigate this phenomenon at low frequencies. The model shows the waveguide stack frequency response has no limiting effects below the microwave range and that a true dc response requires a stable …

A Comparison Of Small-Aperture And Image-Based Spectrophotometry Of Paintings, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin, Francisco Imai Jan 2005

A Comparison Of Small-Aperture And Image-Based Spectrophotometry Of Paintings, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin, Francisco Imai

Articles

An experiment was performed that compared conventional small-aperture and image-based reflection spectrophotometry of paintings. The imaging system used a liquid-crystal tunable filter, resulting in 31 spectral bands evenly sampled between 400 and 700 nm and ranging in bandwidth between 10 and 60 nm. The small-aperture spectrophotometer had a constant bandwidth of 10 nm. Test targets consisting of chromatic and neutral samples of various colors and spectral properties were used to derive a calibration transformation between the two technologies. Three paintings were analyzed: Saint Jerome Reading by Alvise Vivarini, Murnau by Alexej von Jawlensky and Pot of Geraniums by Henri Matisse, …

Size Matters: The Influence Of Viewing Distance On Perceived Spatial Frequency And Contrast, Garrett Johnson, Ethan Montag Jan 2005

Size Matters: The Influence Of Viewing Distance On Perceived Spatial Frequency And Contrast, Garrett Johnson, Ethan Montag

Articles

The use of soft-copy displays to simulate printing devices is a common practice in the color imaging community. CRT and LCD displays can be used as a means of proofing hardcopy prints, and can also be used as tools for the development and evaluation of future imaging systems. Desktop display devices are typically of a much lower resolution than most printers, which can make it difficult to evaluate the spatial structure of prints such as the perceptibility of half-tone dots or graininess. To evaluate these spatial properties one common practice is to use a larger soft-copy display viewed further away. …

Analysis Of Observer And Cultural Variability While Generating "Preferred" Color Reproductions Of Pictorial Images, Scot Fernandez, Mark Fairchild, Karen Braun Jan 2005

Analysis Of Observer And Cultural Variability While Generating "Preferred" Color Reproductions Of Pictorial Images, Scot Fernandez, Mark Fairchild, Karen Braun

Articles

The goal of color reproduction is generally to maximize the accuracy between an original scene or image and a reproduction. The focus of this paper is to better understand color preference reproduction where the original image is the cognitive representation of the reproduced image rather than a physical original. In order to quantify the degree of accuracy when measuring cognition, the implementation of psychophysical techniques is required. This paper outlines two psychophysical experiments, a ranked-order design utilizing hard-copy reproduction, and the method of adjustments utilizing soft-copy reproduction. Both experiments depend on the application of five independent colorimetric adjustment dimensions to …

Improving The Color Constancy Of Prints By Ink Design, Yongda Chen, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin Jan 2005

Improving The Color Constancy Of Prints By Ink Design, Yongda Chen, Roy Berns, Lawrence Taplin

Articles

A computer simulation was performed to investigate optimal fourand five-ink sets in order to minimize color inconstancy while maintaining a large color gamut. The effect of including a spectrally-flat black ink on color constancy was explored. The relationship between ink shape and the color constancy of prints was also analyzed. The results show that the ink shape in the middle wavelength region is very important for the color constancy of prints. The minimum and maximum color inconstancy indices that the different ink sets can achieve, which were optimized by different objective functions, were explored. The results show that color constancy …

Lossless Generalized-Lsb Data Embedding, Mehmet Cilik, Gaurav Sharma, Ahmet Tekalp Jan 2005

Lossless Generalized-Lsb Data Embedding, Mehmet Cilik, Gaurav Sharma, Ahmet Tekalp

Articles

We present a novel lossless (reversible) data-embedding technique, which enables the exact recovery of the original host signal upon extraction of the embedded information. A generalization of the well-known least significant bit (LSB) modification is proposed as the data-embedding method, which introduces additional operating points on the capacity-distortion curve. Lossless recovery of the original is achieved by compressing portions of the signal that are susceptible to embedding distortion and transmitting these compressed descriptions as a part of the embedded payload. A prediction-based conditional entropy coder which utilizes unaltered portions of the host signal as side-information improves the compression efficiency and, …

An Analysis Of Indirect Bankruptcy Costs On The Ts-Bc Hypothesis: A Note, Khondkar Karim, Zhaohui Zhang, Dayong Liu Jan 2005

An Analysis Of Indirect Bankruptcy Costs On The Ts-Bc Hypothesis: A Note, Khondkar Karim, Zhaohui Zhang, Dayong Liu

Articles

This paper argues theoretically the impact of expected indirect bankruptcy costs on optimal capital structure in the Tax Shield-Bankruptcy Cost (TS-BC) framework. By relaxing assumptions of Modigliani and Miller (1958,1963) to incorporate bankruptcy costs into capital structure policy making, we argue that expected indirect bankruptcy costs caused by higher financial risk increase a leveraged firm's business risk, thus increase its cost of capital. Based on the notion that the optimal capital structure can be determined by comparing the marginal tax shield with marginal bankruptcy probability based on binomial multiple logit model and the residual market value of the firm in …

Attitude And Age Differences In Online Buying, Patricia Sorce, Victor Perotti, Stanley Widrick Jan 2005

Attitude And Age Differences In Online Buying, Patricia Sorce, Victor Perotti, Stanley Widrick

Articles

The internet has typically been described as a young man's medium. Young men have also been regarded as the typical profile of the early adopters of online shopping. However, as the internet has become more ubiquitous, the profile of the online shopper has come to resemble that of the general population (Stores, 2001). For example in the year 2000 in the USA, women comprised almost 60% of the online shoppers. In a report by Jupiter Media Metrix, consumers age 50 and older now comprise 16% of new online shoppers in the USA and the number is expected to double by …

London's Suicide Bombers: Botched Operation, Tom Clonan Jan 2005

London's Suicide Bombers: Botched Operation, Tom Clonan

Articles

Thursday’s attacks on London’s tube network and on a double-decker bus in Hackney bear the hallmarks of a botched operation. As more information emerges, the authorities in London have confirmed that at least three of the devices isolated on Thursday were of a similar size to those detonated by Islamic extremists during the 7/7 attack on London earlier this month. The fourth device appears to have been slightly smaller. These devices consist of three main components. The first is a battery powered timing power unit or TPU which initiates the detonation sequence electrically. In recent times, mobile phones have been …

Security At Vatican City State, Tom Clonan Jan 2005

Security At Vatican City State, Tom Clonan

Articles

As world leaders converge on Rome for the Papal funeral on Friday, the question of Vatican security will be high on the Holy See’s agenda. This will be especially so given the presence of President George Bush – the first US president to attend a papal funeral – at Friday’s ceremonies. Bush’s visit has been flagged well in advance and will involve his attendance at a highly visible and choreographed set of ceremonies to which hundreds of thousands of mourners will have access. This combination of factors places the US president within a predictable itinerary in proximity to large ‘un-vetted’ …

Ira Arms Are Likely Stockpiled, Ready For Destruction, Tom Clonan Jan 2005

Ira Arms Are Likely Stockpiled, Ready For Destruction, Tom Clonan

Articles

The Provisional IRA in its statement yesterday pledges to ‘verifiably put its arms beyond use in a way which will further enhance public confidence and to conclude this as quickly as possible’. Given the size and dispersed nature of the IRA’s arsenal, this task will likely prove a logistical challenge that will take at least several weeks to complete. Over the last four decades, the IRA has taken delivery of a considerable number of consignments of weapons for its armed campaign. The main sources of IRA armament have traditionally been from republican sympathisers in the US and from other anti-establishment …

The Future Of Ireland's Neutrality And Security, Tom Clonan Jan 2005

The Future Of Ireland's Neutrality And Security, Tom Clonan

Articles

The future for Ireland’s conventional defence forces and defence and security policy appears set to follow a peculiarly asymmetrical trajectory. On the one hand, Ireland’s skies, land mass and territorial waters lack even the most basic defensive military oversight or protection. On the other hand, in a process that has denied Irish citizens a healthy debate on military neutrality, Ireland’s Defence Forces are being integrated by stealth into the EU’s newly-created military structures. Ireland's defence forces are being integrated into an EU with grand military ambitions. According to the EU St. Malo Declaration of 1998, this grand design involves Europe …

Changing Festival Places: Insights From Galway, Bernadette Quinn Jan 2005

Changing Festival Places: Insights From Galway, Bernadette Quinn

Articles

This paper focuses on cultural reproduction in arts festival settings. It begins by conceptualizing festival settings as places whose characters derive from a combination of both internally derived traits and a diverse series of interactions with other places. Drawing on case study research conducted in an arts festival setting in Galway in the Republic of Ireland, the discussion identifies how elements indigenous to the place connect and engage with external forces. The study found the process of interacting with other places to be complex, involving much negotiation and adaptation as locales became contexts for re-working an array of often conflicting …

Study Of Transmission Response Of Edge Filters Employed In Wavelength Measurements, Qian Wang, Gerald Farrell, Thomas Freir

Articles

The ratiometric wavelength-measurement system is modeled and an optimal design of transmission response of the employed edge filter is demonstrated in the context of a limited signal-to-noise ratio of the signal source. The corresponding experimental investigation is presented. The impact of the limited signal-to-noise ratio of the signal source on determining the optimal transmission response of edge filters for a wavelength-measurement application is shown theoretically and experimentally.
