Articles

We report the discovery of gas streaming motions along nuclear spiral arms towards the LINER nucleus of the galaxy NGC6951. The observations, obtained using the GMOS integral field spectrograph on the Gemini North telescope, yielded maps of the flux distributions and gas kinematics in the H , [Nii] 6584 and [S ii] 6717,31 emission lines of the inner 7′′×15′′ of the galaxy. This region includes a circumnuclear star-forming ring with radius 500 pc, a nuclear spiral inside the ring and the LINER nucleus. The kinematics of the ionized gas is dominated by rotation, but subtraction of a kinematic model of …

The Transition From Preschool To School For Children In Ireland: Teachers Views, Mary O'Kane Jan 2007

The Transition From Preschool To School For Children In Ireland: Teachers Views, Mary O'Kane

Articles

There is a wealth of international research on the transition from preschool to school from a range of perspectives. Following on from such research, the issue of transition is emerging as an important new construct in early childhood care and education (ECCE), with a transition-to-school framework replacing the construct of school readiness as a focus of research interest. There has been limited research into transition practices in Ireland and this study is the first comprehensive research looking at this area from an Irish perspective1. Phase I of this study involved conducting a questionnaire on the transition from preschool to formal …

Investigation Of Macrobending Losses Of Standard Single Mode Fiber With Small Bend Radii, Pengfei Wang, Qian Wang, Gerald Farrell, Ginu Rajan, Thomas Freir, John Cassidy Jan 2007

Investigation Of Macrobending Losses Of Standard Single Mode Fiber With Small Bend Radii, Pengfei Wang, Qian Wang, Gerald Farrell, Ginu Rajan, Thomas Freir, John Cassidy

Articles

An investigation of macrobending loss characteristics of a standard singlemode fiber (SMF28) for small bend radii is presented theoretically and experimentally, which includes the bend loss of the SMF28 with coating layers and the bare SMF28 after stripping the coating layers and chemical etching of partial cladding. The significant influence of reflection occurring at the interface between the cladding and coating layer or the cladding layer and air on the bend loss is investigated theoretically and experimentally.

Wideband Reconfigurable Rolled Planar Monopole Antenna, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann, Zhi Ning Chen Jan 2007

Wideband Reconfigurable Rolled Planar Monopole Antenna, Giuseppe Ruvio, Max Ammann, Zhi Ning Chen

Articles

A novel technique to reconfigure the frequency range of a planar monopole antenna is presented. By adjusting the degree of spiral tightness, a shift of the well-matched operating frequency range is achieved. The proposed antenna is capable of covering the frequencies in the range from 2.9 to 15 GHz, depending on the degree of spiral tightness. The antenna yields a high-efficiency across the full operating bandwidth. Radiation patterns show good omni-directional features in all primary cuts and remain relatively stable with the change of antenna configuration, so that it is a remarkable candidate for indoor or mobile applications where a …

A Method To Measure Reference Strain In Fbg Strain Sensor Interrogation System Involving Actuators, Ginu Rajan, Yuliya Semenova, Qian Wang, Gerald Farrell, Pengfei Wang Jan 2007

A Method To Measure Reference Strain In Fbg Strain Sensor Interrogation System Involving Actuators, Ginu Rajan, Yuliya Semenova, Qian Wang, Gerald Farrell, Pengfei Wang

Articles

A method for reference strain measurement for FBG strain sensor in the testing stage while applying strain using actuators like piezo translators or micro screw is introduced. Unlike conventional methods of surface mounting, in our method the strain gauge is affixed directly to the optical fibre, which allows it to use with systems where the strain is applied directly using actuators while testing the FBG sensing system. Different bonding techniques were tested and a comparison with the results from calculated values are presented. Since the contact area between the fibre and strain gauge is very small a corrected gauge factor …

In Vitro Toxicity Evaluation Of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes On Human A549 Lung Cells, Maria Davoren, Eva Herzog, Alan Casey, Benjamin Cottineau, Gordon Chambers, Hugh Byrne, Fiona Lyng

Articles

This paper describes the in vitro cytotoxicity assessment of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) on A549 cells, a human lung cell line. Cellular viability was determined using the alamar blue (AB), neutral red (NR) and MTT assays, which evaluated metabolic, lyso-somal and mitochondrial activity respectively. In addition, the total protein content of the cells was measured using the coomassie bril-liant (CB) blue assay. Supernatants were also assayed for Adenylate Kinase (AK) release and Interleukin 8 (IL-8) which indicated a loss of cell membrane integrity and an in Xammation response respectively.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide with 80% of cases arising in the developing world. The mortality associated with cervical cancer can be reduced if this disease is detected at the early stages of development or at the pre-malignant state (cervical intra-epithelial neoplasia, CIN). The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of Raman spectroscopy as a diagnostic tool to detect biochemical changes accompanying cervical cancer progression. Raman spectra were acquired from proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and carbohydrates in order to gain an insight into the biochemical composition of cells and tissues. Spectra …

On Cosmall Abelian Groups, Brendan Goldsmith, O. Kolman Jan 2007

On Cosmall Abelian Groups, Brendan Goldsmith, O. Kolman

Articles

It is a well-known homological fact that every Abelian group G has the property that Hom(G,−) commutes with direct products. Here we investigate the ‘dual’ property: an Abelian group G is said to be cosmall if Hom(−,G) commutes with direct products. We show that cosmall groups are cotorsion-free and that no group of cardinality less than a strongly compact cardinal can be cosmall. In particular, if there is a proper class of strongly compact cardinals, then there are no cosmall groups.

Hamiltonian Formulation, Nonintegrability And Local Bifurcations For The Ostrovsky Equation, S. Roy Choudhury, Rossen Ivanov, Yue Liu Jan 2007

Hamiltonian Formulation, Nonintegrability And Local Bifurcations For The Ostrovsky Equation, S. Roy Choudhury, Rossen Ivanov, Yue Liu

Articles

The Ostrovsky equation is a model for gravity waves propagating down a channel under the influence of Coriolis force. This equation is a modification of the famous Korteweg-de Vries equation and is also Hamiltonian. However the Ostrovsky equation is not integrable and in this contribution we prove its nonintegrability. We also study local bifurcations of its solitary waves.

Fourth Amendment Lessons From The Highway And The Subway: A Principled Approach To Suspicionless Searches, Ricardo J. Bascuas Jan 2007

Fourth Amendment Lessons From The Highway And The Subway: A Principled Approach To Suspicionless Searches, Ricardo J. Bascuas

Articles

The threat of future terrorist attacks has sped the proliferation of random, suspicionless searches and seizures, such as those now made of New York City subway riders. Courts assess the legality of such searches with an inherently flawed balancing test developed to assess searches and seizures made without "probable cause." Although scholars and Justices alike have decried the resort to balancing individual interests against the government's need to search, no alternative framework has been proposed. This Article proposes a more principled, objective inquiry for determining when suspicionless searches can be made. To eliminate the need for balancing, this Article advances …

Famous Trademarks And The Rational Basis For Protecting Irrational Beliefs, J. Shahar Dillbary Jan 2007

Famous Trademarks And The Rational Basis For Protecting Irrational Beliefs, J. Shahar Dillbary

Articles

Contrary to the traditional view, this article argues that mega-brands are neither economic evils nor limited to imparting information about the products they adom. It also rejects the view that famous marks persuade "snobs" to "irrationally" pay more for the same physical product they could have purchased for less. Rather, it adopts the view that in purchasing a branded good, the consumer is actually purchasing a bundle of three prod- ucts: a physical product, information about the physical product, and an intangible product, such as fame, prestige, peace of mind, or a pleasant feel- ing. This article explores the demand …

Articles

The Fornax Cluster is a conspicuous cluster of galaxies in the southern hemisphere and the second largest collection of early-type galaxies within < ∼ 20 Mpc after the Virgo Cluster. In this paper, we present a brief introduction to the ACS Fornax Cluster Survey — a program to image, in the F475W (g475) and F850LP (z850) bandpasses, 43 early-type galaxies in Fornax using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope. Combined with a companion survey of Virgo, the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey, this represents the most comprehensive imaging survey to date of early-type galaxies in cluster environments in terms of depth, spatial resolution, sample size and homogeneity. We describe the selection of the program galaxies, their basic properties, and the main science objectives of the survey which include the measurement of luminosities, colors and structural parameters for globular clusters associated with these galaxies, an analysis of their isophotal properties and surface brightness profiles, and an accurate calibration of the surface brightness fluctuation distance indicator. Finally, we discuss the data reduction procedures adopted for the survey.

Is A Gift Forever?, William I. Miller Jan 2007

Is A Gift Forever?, William I. Miller

Articles

What are the rules regarding gifts you receive? Can you give them away? If so, must you conceal that you have done so from the original giver? Or is there a statute of limitations, after which any right the original giver has to feel wronged or to burden you with guilt for undervaluing it by giving it away rightly expires? Even an heirloom might exhaust its sacredness. Sometimes the sacred has a half-life, as might be the case, for instance, with your grandmother’s dining set. Can the giver ask for his gifts back if you try to give them away? …

Congressional Power To Extend Preclearance: A Response To Professor Karlan, Ellen D. Katz Jan 2007

Congressional Power To Extend Preclearance: A Response To Professor Karlan, Ellen D. Katz

Articles

Is the core provision of the Voting Rights Act unconstitutional? Many people now think that the Act's preclearance requirement is invalid, but Professor Karlan is not among them. In part, that is because she is not convinced the problems that originally motivated Congress to impose preclearance have been fully remedied. Professor Karlan points out the many ways section 5 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) shapes behavior in the jurisdictions subject to the statute--not just by blocking discriminatory electoral changes, but also by influencing less transparent conduct by various political actors operating in these regions. Do not be so sure, …
