Wind As A Sustainable Energy Source In Australia, Jules Chiavaroli

Articles

The goal of this study is to review the technology for wind energy generation and to then apply previously uncovered statistics to measure the feasibility of applying the technology to a specific location, in this case the continent and country of Australia. Aside from a purely numerical analysis, an assessment of sustainability impact will also be considered. Based on findings, the potential for capitalizing on wind energy the world over is enormous with Australia being one of the most suitable locations on the earth. A long term renewable energy implementation plan must be instituted for nations to achieve their own …

The Professional Ethics Of Billing And Collections, Mark A. Hall, Carl E. Schneider Oct 2008

The Professional Ethics Of Billing And Collections, Mark A. Hall, Carl E. Schneider

Articles

Medicine is a Profession on which physicians rely for their livelihood and patients for their lives. If physicians do not charge for services, they cannot survive. If patients cannot afford those services, they cannot survive. No wonder many physicians have long agreed that fees are “one of the most difficult problems . . . between patient and physician.” For years comprehensive insurance subdued this problem, but currently widespread underinsurance and consumer-directed health care are reviving it. Even as the ranks of the uninsured continue to increase, the latest hope for controlling medical costs requires insured patients to pay for much more …

Plasma-Controlled Metal Catalyst Saturation And The Initial Stage Of Carbon Nanostructure Array Growth, Igor Levchenko, Ken Ostrikov, Davide Mariotti, Anthony Bruce Murphy Oct 2008

Plasma-Controlled Metal Catalyst Saturation And The Initial Stage Of Carbon Nanostructure Array Growth, Igor Levchenko, Ken Ostrikov, Davide Mariotti, Anthony Bruce Murphy

Articles

The kinetics of the nucleation and growth of carbon nanotube and nanocone arrays on Ni catalyst nanoparticles on a silicon surface exposed to a low-temperature plasma are investigated numerically, using a complex model that includes surface diffusion and ion motion equations. It is found that the degree of ionization of the carbon flux strongly affects the kinetics of nanotube and nanocone nucleation on partially saturated catalyst patterns. The use of highly ionized carbon flux allows formation of a nanotube array with a very narrow height distribution of half-width 7 nm. Similar results are obtained for carbon nanocone arrays, with an …

Articles

Epidemiological and clinical studies provide compelling support for a causal relationship between Helicobacter pylori infection and endothelial dysfunction, leading to vascular diseases. However, clear biochemical evidence for this association is limited. In the present study, we have conducted a comprehensive investigation of endothelial injury in bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs) induced by H. pylori-conditioned medium (HPCM) prepared from H. pylori 60190 [vacuolating cytotoxin A (Vac(+))]. BAECs were treated with either unconditioned media, HPCM (0-25% vol/vol), or Escherichia coli-conditioned media for 24 h, and cell functions were monitored. Vac(+) HPCM significantly decreased BAEC proliferation, tube formation, and migration (by up to …

Supporting Children's Participation In Second Language Stories In An Irish Language Preschool, Maire Mhic Mhathuna Oct 2008

Supporting Children's Participation In Second Language Stories In An Irish Language Preschool, Maire Mhic Mhathuna

Articles

This paper considers how children learning a second language were supported as active participants during storytelling sessions in an Irish-language immersion preschool in Dublin. Audio-recordings and observations were made of the story sessions once a fortnight over a period of six months. The resulting transcripts were analysed from an interactionist perspective, recognising both the cognitive and social aspects of the process. The staff were also interviewed and a questionnaire was completed by the parents. The analysis showed that the practitioners provided support for the children through dynamic repeated readings of target books, scaffolded interactions, sufficient experience of storybook reading and …

Hedonic Adaptation And The Settlement Of Civil Lawsuits, Jonathan Masur, John Bronsteen, Christopher Buccafusco Oct 2008

Hedonic Adaptation And The Settlement Of Civil Lawsuits, Jonathan Masur, John Bronsteen, Christopher Buccafusco

Articles

This Essay examines the burgeoning psychological literature on happiness and hedonic adaptation (a person's capacity to preserve or recapture her level of happiness by adjusting to changed circumstances), bringing this literature to bear on the probability of pretrial settlement in civil litigation. The existing economic and behavioral models of settlement are incomplete because they do not incorporate the effect of adaptation on the sum for which a plaintiff is willing to accept an offer. When an individual first suffers a serious injury, she will likely predict that the injury will greatly diminish her future happiness. However, during the time that …

Synthesis And Antimicrobial Evaluation Of Carbohydrate And Polyhydroxylated Non-Carbohydrate Fatty Acid Ester And Ether Derivatives, Aoife Smith, Patricia Nobmann, Gary Henehan, Paula Bourke, Julie Dunne Oct 2008

Synthesis And Antimicrobial Evaluation Of Carbohydrate And Polyhydroxylated Non-Carbohydrate Fatty Acid Ester And Ether Derivatives, Aoife Smith, Patricia Nobmann, Gary Henehan, Paula Bourke, Julie Dunne

Articles

A series of fatty acid ester and ether derivatives have been chemically synthesised based on carbohydrate and non-carbohydrate polyhydroxylated scaffolds. The synthesised compounds, along with their corresponding fatty acid monoglyceride antimicrobials, were evaluated for antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Of the derivatives synthesised several of the carbohydrate based compounds have antimicrobial efficacy comparable with commercially available antimicrobials. The results suggest that the nature of the carbohydrate core plays a role in the efficacy of carbohydrate fatty acid derivatives as antimicrobials.

The Use Of Litigation Screenings In Mass Torts: A Formula For Fraud?, Lester Brickman Oct 2008

The Use Of Litigation Screenings In Mass Torts: A Formula For Fraud?, Lester Brickman

Articles

The article critically examines the pervasive abuse of litigation screenings in mass tort cases, revealing a system driven by financial exploitation where medical evaluations are manipulated to generate lawsuits. These screenings, often designed to produce false positives, undermine the integrity of the legal system by creating a flood of specious claims. The analysis highlights how lawyers, doctors, and screening companies exploit legal loopholes and financial incentives, leading to billions of dollars in settlements and eroding public trust in the civil justice system.

What's Law Got To Do With It?: The Bosnia V. Serbia Decision's Impact On Reconciliation, Sheri P. Rosenberg Oct 2008

What's Law Got To Do With It?: The Bosnia V. Serbia Decision's Impact On Reconciliation, Sheri P. Rosenberg

Articles

During the twentieth century a particular ideology inspired specific efforts to utilize the power of the law to redress episodes of mass atrocity-in particular genocide. The idea has been that accountability and reparations are necessary for moving beyond a past marred with crimes of genocide and crimes against humanity. Trials are often claimed to aid this process on the grounds that they create an irrefutable historic record, punish the perpetrators for the sake of justice and deterrence, and promote peace and reconciliation. This Article interrogates the stated goals of accountability, in particular the goal of reconciliation, against the impact, within …

Reducing Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide: Oceans Provide A Huge Opportunity For Sequestration, Jules Chiavaroli Sep 2008

Reducing Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide: Oceans Provide A Huge Opportunity For Sequestration, Jules Chiavaroli

Articles

The scientific community is fairly unified in their assessment of climatological change. It is happening primarily as the result of excess carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere produced by unrelenting world industrialization. If it continues unabated it will cause major physical changes to the earth that will dramatically alter how mankind lives. And, the world has until the middle of this century to cap CO2 levels short of where they will cause this irreversible change. For many experts involved in this issue, actively reducing existing CO2 levels is a necessary component for a total solution to the problem. This paper …

Hand-Held Flyback Driven Coaxial Dielectric Barrier Discharge: Development And Characterization, Victor J. Law, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Neil O’Connor, James F. Lalor, Steven Daniels

Articles

The development of a handheld single and triple chamber atmospheric pressure coaxial dielectric barrier discharge driven by Flyback circuitry for helium and argon discharges is described. The Flyback uses external metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor power switching technology and the transformer operates in the continuous current mode to convert a continuous dc power of 10–33 W to generate a 1.2–1.6 kV 3.5 μs pulse. An argon discharge breakdown voltage of ∼768 V is measured. With a 50 kHz, pulse repetition rate and an argon flow rate of 0.5–10 argon slm (slm denotes standard liters per minute), the electrical power density deposited in …

Three-Body Equations Of Motion In Successive Post-Newtonian Approximations, Carlos O. Lousto, Hiroyuki Nakano Sep 2008

Three-Body Equations Of Motion In Successive Post-Newtonian Approximations, Carlos O. Lousto, Hiroyuki Nakano

Articles

There are periodic solutions to the equal-mass three-body (and N-body) problem in Newtonian gravity. The figure-eight solution is one of them. In this paper, we discuss its solution in the first and second post-Newtonian approximations to General Relativity. To do so we derive the canonical equations of motion in the ADM gauge from the three-body Hamiltonian. We then integrate those equations numerically, showing that quantities such as the energy, linear and angular momenta are conserved down to numerical error. We also study the scaling of the initial parameters with the physical size of the triple system. In this way we …

Temperature Dependence Of Macrobending Loss In All-Fiber Bend Loss Edge Filter, Pengfei Wang, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell

Articles

A theoretical model for macrobending-induced temperature dependent loss (TDL) for a standard singlemode fiber (SMF28) with dual coating layers is presented, with good agreement demonstrated between theoretical calculations and experimental results. The impact of temperature on two examples of an all-fiber based edge filter is also investigated theoretically and experimentally and using the developed model, it is shown that it is possible to predict the impact of temperature variations on an all-fiber based edge filter.

Inhibition Of Adhesion Of Streptococcus Mutans To Hydroxylapatite By Commercial Dairy Powders And Individual Milk Proteins, Rachel Halpin, Maeve O'Connor, Dolores O'Riordan, Michael O'Sullivan, Damien Brady

Articles

The aim of this study was to investigate the inhibitory effect of various dairy powders and milk constituents on the adhesion of a clinical isolate of Streptococcus mutans to hydroxylapatite (HA), an analogue of tooth enamel. Adhesion of a microorganism to a cell surface such as epithelial cells or tooth enamel is considered to be the first step in pathogenesis. Inhibiting this process may have therapeutic effects in vivo. The adherence assays were performed by incubating S. mutans with HA in the presence of each test material for 45 min, followed by centrifugal separation of the HA. Unbound bacteria were …

Environmental Limits On The Nonresonant Cosmic-Ray Current-Driven Instability, Brian Reville, John Kirk, Peter Duffy, Stephen O'Sullivan

Articles

We investigate the so-called nonresonant cosmic-ray streaming instability, first discussed by Bell (2004). The extent to which thermal damping and ion-neutral collisions reduce the growth of this instability is calculated. Limits on the growth of the nonresonant mode in SN1006 and RX J1713.7-3946 are presented.

A Technique For Characterization Of Dimensional Changes In Slanted Holographic Gratings By Monitoring The Angular Selectivity Profile, Nitesh Pandey, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal Sep 2008

A Technique For Characterization Of Dimensional Changes In Slanted Holographic Gratings By Monitoring The Angular Selectivity Profile, Nitesh Pandey, Izabela Naydenova, Suzanne Martin, Vincent Toal

Articles

A method has been developed for retrieving the complete angular selectivity profile of transmission holographic gratings in one step. The method is applied to study in real time the shrinkage and changes in the effective optical thickness of a slanted holographic grating recorded in an acrylamide-based photopolymer. It can form the basis of a holographic sensor of analytes that cause a thickness change in the holographic medium. It can also be useful for the study and optimization of holographic recording materials and for quality control during production of holographic optical elements.

Equi-Biaxial Fatigue Of Elastomers: The Effect Of Oil Swelling On Fatigue Life, Stephen Jerrams, John Hanley, Niall Murphy, Ali Hassan Sep 2008

Equi-Biaxial Fatigue Of Elastomers: The Effect Of Oil Swelling On Fatigue Life, Stephen Jerrams, John Hanley, Niall Murphy, Ali Hassan

Articles

The effect of oil swelling on the fatigue life of ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM) has been studied under conditions of equi-biaxial cycling using dynamic bubble inflation. Specimens were subjected to varying degrees of swelling in reference mineral oils and fatigued at constant engineering stress amplitudes. The reference oils used for swelling the EPDM had known aniline points, allowing the rubber-oil compatibility to be determined. The inflation fluid for fatigue testing was selected with a solubility parameter that would produce a desired level of incompatibility with the test specimens, thereby limiting the amount of additional swelling during cycling. Wöhler …

Correlation Of Vibrational Intensity With Fluorescence Lifetimes In Π Conjugated Polymers, Luke O'Neill, Patrick Lynch, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne Sep 2008

Correlation Of Vibrational Intensity With Fluorescence Lifetimes In Π Conjugated Polymers, Luke O'Neill, Patrick Lynch, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne

Articles

A series of novel pi (p) conjugated polymers, originating from the archetypical Polyphenylene vinylene, in which the phenyl units are successively replaced by the larger naphthyl and anthryl acene units, were previously found to have a well-defined relationship between their relative fluorescence yields and their vibrational characteristics, as determined by Raman spectroscopy. In this study the Strickler–Berg equation is used to probe the influence of continual substitution of higher order acene units into the conjugated backbone in terms of the variation of the radiative and non-radiative rates. The deconvolution of the radiative and non-radiative rates enables the correlation of the …

Demographics, Trends, And A Call To Action, Toby Golick Sep 2008

Demographics, Trends, And A Call To Action, Toby Golick

Articles

Every discussion of aging in America seems to begin with demographic statistics showing that our population is increasingly old and getting older. But the figures are truly stunning: In 2006 (the latest year for which data are available), 37.3 million persons were 65 years old or older in America; this represents 12.6 percent of the U.S. population-more than one in every eight Americans. By 2030 the number of older people is expected to increase to 71.5 million older persons, over 20 percent of the total population.

Will The Tax Man Cometh To Coach Rodriguez?, Douglas A. Kahn, Jeffrey H. Kahn

Articles

There has been much in the news recently about coaches of major college sports teams moving to a new school and incurring an obligation to make payment to their old school under a buyout provision in their contract. The most recent example is the highly publicized move of Richard Rodriguez from West Virginia University to the University of Michigan. Coach Rodriguez had a contract with his former employer that required him to pay $4 million dollars to West Virginia if he left for another coaching position. After a suit was filed, it was reported that the parties agreed that the …
