Silver Doped Perfluoropolyether-Urethane Coatings: Antibacterial Activity And Surface Analysis, Niall Stobie, Brendan Duffy, Steven Hinder, Patrick Mchale, Declan Mccormack

Articles

The colonisation of clinical and industrial surfaces with pathogenic microorganisms has prompted increased research into the development of effective antibacterial and antifouling coatings. There is evidence that implanted biomedical surfaces coated with metallic silver can be inactivated by hysiological fluids, thus reducing the bioactivity of the coating. In this work, we report the biofilm inhibition of Staphylococcus epidermidis using a roomtemperatureprocessedsilver dopedperfluoropolyether-urethane coating. The release of silver ions from these fluoropolymers over a six-day period inhibited bacterial encrustation – as observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated differences in carbon, fluorine and sodium surface composition …

The Treaty Of Lisbon And The Reformed Jurisdictional Powers Of The European Court Of Justice In The Field Of Justice And Home Affairs., Stephen Carruthers

Articles

This Article analyses the jurisdictional powers of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) in respect of Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) measures both under pre-Lisbon Title VI TEU and post-Lisbon under Title V of Part Three TFEU. In Part one, it assesses the deficiencies of the pre-Lisbon system. In particular it analyses the negative consequences for legitimacy arising from the restrictions on justiciability in respect of pre-Lisbon JHA measures in light of case law of the CJEU and the European Court of Human Rights. In Part two, it outlines the genesis and substance of the reforms in …

Dab Eureka-147: The European Platform For Digital Radio, Brian O'Neill Jan 2009

Dab Eureka-147: The European Platform For Digital Radio, Brian O'Neill

Articles

Like its analogue counterpart, digital radio is one of the 'older' forms of new media. The technology of digital radio broadcasting has been under active development for at least 25 years and has produced a number of different technical solutions, the longest established of which is Eureka-147 or Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB). This article explores DAB's distinctly European vision for the future of broadcasting. DAB is traced to its origins in 1980s European research and development policy and its affinity with traditions of European public service broadcasting. Ironically, it was DAB's failure to capitalize on its 'Europeanness' that contributed to …

Gender Differences In Children’S Internet Use:Key Findings From Europe, Helen Mcquillan, Brian O'Neill Jan 2009

Gender Differences In Children’S Internet Use:Key Findings From Europe, Helen Mcquillan, Brian O'Neill

Articles

This paper analyses comparative empirical data from across Europe on gender differences in children’s internet use, and through a new interpretive framework on young people’s experiences, seeks to add new findings to this growing international knowledge base. Linking feminist theory on gender and technology with theories of youth gender identity construction, four key areas are investigated. Firstly, the impact of increased internet access and use in schools and in homes on gender equality is examined. Secondly, youth communication and content creation practices are investigated to explore whether the internet is facilitating flexibility in gender identity and the transcendence of traditional …

Developing Entrepreneurship Programmes For Female Members Of The Irish Traveller Community, Thomas Cooney

Articles

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore the distinctive challenges faced by female travellers (Roma, Sinti and Gypsy) in starting their own business. Design/methodology/approach – The paper details a pilot “start your own business” programme that was delivered in Ireland to 12 women from the traveller community. Findings – Four distinct categories of entrepreneurship barriers faced by female travellers were recognised: self-esteem, traveller identity, welfare trap and family responsibilities. Research limitations/implications – The findings are based on just one programme and so no general conclusions can be drawn. Practical implications – The paper identifies the successes and …

Supporting Value Creation By Reducing Cultural Distance As A Barrier To Exporting, Thomas Cooney, Amanda Ratcliffe, Jane Silver Jan 2009

Supporting Value Creation By Reducing Cultural Distance As A Barrier To Exporting, Thomas Cooney, Amanda Ratcliffe, Jane Silver

Articles

Value creation at the level of the organisation involves balancing the interests of several different stakeholders, with exporting occasionally viewed as a broad-based strategy capable of achieving such equilibrium. However, while much has been written concerning the logistical and economic challenges faced by SMEs wishing to avail of market opportunities abroad, there remains a dearth of information offering solutions to overcoming cultural distance as a barrier to exporting. An EU project entitled ‘Passport to Trade’ sought to provide greater insight into business culture by collating the customs and subjective norms of all member states within the EU and making the …

Focusing On Process And History: Path Dependence, Paul Donnelly Jan 2009

Focusing On Process And History: Path Dependence, Paul Donnelly

Articles

In recognition of the calls for more processual and historically informed organizational theorizing, this chapter considers the notion of path dependency, an approach which holds that a historical path of choices has the character of a branching process with a self-reinforcing dynamic such that preceding steps in a particular direction induce further movement in the same direction, thereby making the possibility of switching to some other previously credible alternative more difficult. Path dependence seeks to assess how process, sequence and temporality can be best incorporated into explanation, the focus of the researcher being on particular outcomes, temporal sequencing and the …

Totem, Taboo And The Concept Of Law: Myth In Hart And Freud, Jeanne L. Schroeder Jan 2009

Totem, Taboo And The Concept Of Law: Myth In Hart And Freud, Jeanne L. Schroeder

Articles

The article critically examines H.L.A. Hart’s The Concept of Law, arguing that its foundational narrative of legal evolution relies on a mythological anthropology. Hart’s account of the transition from primitive to modern legal systems through secondary rules is revealed to be a myth that, while not historically accurate, conveys deeper truths about the nature of law and modernity. The analysis draws parallels between Hart’s mythography and Freud’s psychoanalytic theories, particularly in Totem and Taboo and Moses and Monotheism, to explore how both thinkers conceptualize the origins of law as a shift from direct force to symbolic authority. The article contends …

Eighth Amendment Gaps: Can Conditions Of Confinement Litigation Benefit From Proportionality Theory, Alexander A. Reinert Jan 2009

Eighth Amendment Gaps: Can Conditions Of Confinement Litigation Benefit From Proportionality Theory, Alexander A. Reinert

Articles

The article explores the potential benefits of integrating proportionality theory, traditionally used in sentencing, into litigation challenging harsh prison conditions under the Eighth Amendment. It argues that this approach could offer new avenues for addressing the limitations of current conditions of confinement jurisprudence by reimagining how courts evaluate the constitutionality of prison conditions.

Critique Of Money Judgment (Part Two: Liens On New York Personal Property), David G. Carlson Jan 2009

Critique Of Money Judgment (Part Two: Liens On New York Personal Property), David G. Carlson

Articles

The article critiques the New York Civil Practice Law and Rules (CPLR) for its outdated and overly complex framework governing money judgments, particularly in the creation, enforcement, and priority of judicial liens. It argues that the CPLR's inefficiencies and inconsistencies, exacerbated by conflicts with federal bankruptcy law and the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), lead to unjust outcomes for both debtors and creditors. The article proposes modest reforms to align the CPLR with modern legal standards, simplify procedures, and eliminate unnecessary distinctions between tangible and intangible property.

Inverse Scattering Solutions With Applications To Electromagnetic Signal Processing, Jonathan Blackledge, Timo Hamalainen, Jyrki Joutsensalo Jan 2009

Inverse Scattering Solutions With Applications To Electromagnetic Signal Processing, Jonathan Blackledge, Timo Hamalainen, Jyrki Joutsensalo

Articles

When a signal is recorded that has been physically generated by some scattering process (the interaction of electromagnetic, acoustic or elastic waves with inhomogeneous materials, for example), the ‘standard model’ for the signal (i.e. information content convolved with a characteristic Impulse Response Function) is usually based on a single scattering approximation. An additive noise term is introduced into the model to take into account a range of non-deterministic factors including multiple scattering that, along with electronic noise and other background noise sources, is assumed to be relatively weak. Thus, the standard model is based on a ‘weak field condition’ and …

Editorial: Nutrition Research Reviews, Katherine Younger Jan 2009

Editorial: Nutrition Research Reviews, Katherine Younger

Articles

The diverse nature of the reviews included in this issue of Nutrition Research Reviews highlights a problem that is becoming increasingly acute for journal editors, namely that of finding suitable reviewers (especially for the more esoteric manuscripts) who are prepared to devote some of their time and expertise to this crucial task. Peer-review underpins the whole ethos of scientific journal publishing as we currently know it. Without it, readers have little guarantee that the published material is credible, which in turn casts the authors in a dubious light, and with them the editors and publishers of the journals; the whole …

An Evaluation Of Miru-Vntr Analysis And Spoligotyping For Genotyping Of M. Bovis Isolates And A Comparison With Rflp Typing, Joanne Mclernon, Eamon Costello, Orla Flynn, Gillian Madigan, Fergus Ryan Jan 2009

An Evaluation Of Miru-Vntr Analysis And Spoligotyping For Genotyping Of M. Bovis Isolates And A Comparison With Rflp Typing, Joanne Mclernon, Eamon Costello, Orla Flynn, Gillian Madigan, Fergus Ryan

Articles

Common strain typing methods for differentiation of Mycobacterium bovis isolates include restriction endonuclease analysis (REA), restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis, spoligotyping and more recently, mycobacterial interspersed repetitive unit-variable-number tandem repeat (MIRU-VNTR) typing. Strain typing of Mycobacterium bovis isolates based on the variable-number tandem repeats of mycobacterial interspersed repetitive units (MIRU-VNTR) and on spoligotyping was evaluated in this study and these typing methods were compared with restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) typing. A total of 386 M. bovis isolates from cattle, badgers and deer in the Republic of Ireland that had previously been typed by IS6110, polymorphic GC-rich sequence (PGRS) …

Three-Dimensional Spatial Information Systems: State Of The Art Review, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, D. Laefer, S. W. Morrish, M. Bertolotto Jan 2009

Three-Dimensional Spatial Information Systems: State Of The Art Review, Bianca Schoen-Phelan, D. Laefer, S. W. Morrish, M. Bertolotto

Articles

A spatial information system (SIS) is critical to the hosting, querying, and analyzing of spatial data sets. The increasing availability of three-dimensional (3D) data (e.g. from aerial and terrestrial laser scanning) and the desire to use such data in large geo-spatial platforms have been dual drivers in the evolution of integrated SISs. Within this context, recent patents demonstrate efforts to handle large data sets, especially complex point clouds. While the development of feature-rich geo-systems has been well documented, the implementation of support for 3D capabilities is only now being addressed. This paper documents the underlying technologies implemented for the support …

Nama Versus Nationalization – How To Deal With The Banks’ Toxic Loans?, Thomas Power Jan 2009

Nama Versus Nationalization – How To Deal With The Banks’ Toxic Loans?, Thomas Power

Articles

Banks are indispensible to the efficient functioning of the economy. Right now they are unable to carry out their normal functions (e.g. providing lines of credit to individuals and business) because they are underfunded. They are rationing credit because they do not have enough funds. The funds they need to lend to borrowers come from deposits, equity and bonds. During the ‘boom period’ banks did not have enough funds from deposits and had to rely on the inter-bank market to borrow the funds they needed in order to lend. According to the Central Bank ‘net foreign liabilities’ of commercial banks …

Getting The Word Out: The Informational Function Of Trademarks, John Shahar Dillbary Jan 2009

Getting The Word Out: The Informational Function Of Trademarks, John Shahar Dillbary

Articles

This article challenges the statement that "the only legally relevant function of a trademark is to impart information as to the source of the product." Information about the source of the product undoubtedly helps the consumer choose the product she wants from a set of possible products. This article argues, however, that the informational function of trademarks is broader: in addition to providing information about the source, a trademark often provides information that reduces consumers' uncertainty about the product's qualities and impacts purchasing decisions. Specifically, this article shows that a trademark not only helps the consumer choose the product she …
