L-Arginine Is Essential For Pancreatic B-Cell Functional Integrity, Metabolism And Defense From Inflammatory Challenge, Mauricio S. Krause, Neville H. Mcclenaghan, Peter R. Flatt, Paulo I Homem De Bittencourt, Colin Murphy, Philip Newsholme Jan 2011

L-Arginine Is Essential For Pancreatic B-Cell Functional Integrity, Metabolism And Defense From Inflammatory Challenge, Mauricio S. Krause, Neville H. Mcclenaghan, Peter R. Flatt, Paulo I Homem De Bittencourt, Colin Murphy, Philip Newsholme

Articles

In this work, our aim was to determine whether L-arginine (a known insulinotropic amino acid) can promote a shift of b-cell intermediary metabolism favoring glutathione (GSH) and glutathione disulfide (GSSG) antioxidant responses, stimulus–secretion coupling and functional integrity. Clonal BRIN-BD11 b-cells and mouse islets were cultured for 24 h at various L-arginine concentrations (0–1.15 mmol/l) in the absence or presence of a proinflammatory cytokine cocktail (interleukin 1b, tumour necrosis factor a and interferon g). Cells were assessed for viability, insulin secretion, GSH, GSSG, glutamate, nitric oxide (NO), superoxide, urea, lactate and for the consumption of glucose and glutamine. Protein levels of …

Synthesis, Co-Polymerisation And Electrochemical Evaluation Of Novel Ferrocene-Pyrrole Derivatives, Mary Deasy, Eithne Dempsey, Geok Hong Soon, Oliver Worsfold

Articles

New ferrocene derivatives, ((4-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)phenoxy)carbonyl) ferrocene (4) and (6-(4-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)phenoxy)hexyl) ferrocene (7) were synthesised, characterised and electrochemically evaluated as redox active films formed via anodic oxidation with pyrrole. Thin film studies were conducted and films formed from both compounds resulted in a stable Fe II/III redox couple with Eo = 0.04V and 0.36V vs. Ag/Ag+ for (7) and (4) respectively. Both potential sweeping and chronocoulometry were employed for film formation with the former resulting in controllable, reproducible film deposition. Growth conditions and solution concentrations were varied in the case of both compounds in order to assess …

Estimation Of Effective Lens Position Using A Method Independent Of Preoperative Keratometry Readings, I. Dooley, S. Charalampidou, John Nolan, James Loughman, Molly Breen, Stephen Beatty

Articles

Purpose

To evaluate the validity of a keratometry (K)-independent method of estimating effective lens position (ELP) before phacoemulsification cataract surgery.

Setting

Institute of Eye Surgery, Whitfield Clinic, Waterford, Ireland.

Design

Evaluation of diagnostic test or technology.

Methods

The anterior chamber diameter and corneal height in eyes scheduled for cataract surgery were measured with a rotating Scheimpflug camera. Corneal height and anterior chamber diameter were used to estimate the ELP in a K-independent method (using the SRK/T [ELPrs] and Holladay 1 [ELPrh] formulas).

Results

The mean ELP was calculated using the traditional (mean ELPs 5.59 mm …

Supplementation With All Three Macular Carotenoids: Response, Stability, And Safety, Eithne Connolly, Stephen Beatty, James Loughman, Alan Howard, Michael Louw, John Nolan

Articles

Purpose This study was designed to investigate serum and macular response, and safety, to supplementation with meso-zeaxanthin (MZ), lutein (L) and zeaxanthin (Z), the carotenoids that constitute macular pigment (MP).

Materials and Methods 44 healthy subjects were recruited into this randomized, placebo-controlled, clinical trial. Subjects consumed one tablet per day containing 10.6 mg MZ, 5.9 mg L and 1.2 mg Z (Intervention, I group) or placebo (P group). The spatial profile of MP optical density (MPOD) was measured using heterochromatic flicker photometry (HFP), and serum concentrations of L and Z were quantified using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Subjects …

Procedural Protection Of Constitutional Rights In Brazil, Keith S. Rosenn Jan 2011

Procedural Protection Of Constitutional Rights In Brazil, Keith S. Rosenn

Articles

Brazil has developed one of the most complex systems of judicial review in the world. In addition, it has developed a wide variety of constitutional actions for the purpose of protecting the huge number of constitutional rights conferred by its lengthy Constitution. In theory, constitutional rights can be protected in ordinary actions. Because ordinary actions typically take a great many years to resolve in Brazil, the framers of the 1988 Constitution, building on Brazil's prior constitutions and foreign models, constitutionalized a wide array of procedural devices to try to assure that the huge number of individual, social and economic rights …

Critical Race Materialism: Theorizing Justice In The Wake Of Global Neoliberalism, Sumi Cho, Francisco Valdes Jan 2011

Critical Race Materialism: Theorizing Justice In The Wake Of Global Neoliberalism, Sumi Cho, Francisco Valdes

Articles

Critical Race Theory's (CRT's) first two decades produced a rich and diverse literature deconstructing law and society using a racial lens. CRT's emergence and rise occurred at a moment in history where the U.S. was still the uncontested unipolar superpower whose privileged elites enjoyed unprecedented prosperity and status. Despite its dominant standing in the world economy and polity, prevailing "social structures of accumulation" within the United States were already in decline. For CRT's next iteration, we argue that a critical race materialist approach is necessary to interpret the history of how economic and social structures of identity are inextricably linked. …

The Geometry Of Inside And Outside, David Abraham Jan 2011

The Geometry Of Inside And Outside, David Abraham

Articles

These are two important books. The Citizen and the Alien provides a rigorous and illuminating scrutiny of the conundrum faced by making out current concept and politics of citizenship work within liberal moral and political philosophy. The Birthright Lottery, a book with many virtues, recasts birthright citizenship in a manner analogous to the end of entailed property transmission brought about by liberal reform. This essay suggests that Bosniak is unduly pessimistic about bounded communities and that Shachar is unduly optimistic about the relationship between property rights and democracy.

Assessing The African Union Concerns About Article 16 Of The Rome Statute Of The International Criminal Court, Charles C. Jalloh, Dapo Akande, Max Du Plessi Jan 2011

Assessing The African Union Concerns About Article 16 Of The Rome Statute Of The International Criminal Court, Charles C. Jalloh, Dapo Akande, Max Du Plessi

Articles

This article assesses the African Union's (AU) concerns about Article 16 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). It seeks to articulate a clearer picture of the law and politics of deferrals within the context of the AU's repeated calls to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC, or the Council) to invoke Article 16 to suspend the processes initiated by the ICC against President Omar Al Bashir of Sudan. The UNSC's failure to accede to the AU request led African States to formally withhold cooperation from the ICC in respect to the arrest and surrender of the …

Federal Law In State Court: Judicial Federalism Through A Relational Lens, Charlton C. Copeland Jan 2011

Federal Law In State Court: Judicial Federalism Through A Relational Lens, Charlton C. Copeland

Articles

Enforcing federalism is most commonly thought to involve the search for a constitutional delegation of substantive power. Although in modern times the substantive power might be overlapping or shared authority, federalism enforcement proceeds from a determination about the site of substantive power. This conception of federalism enforcement preserves the Constitution's commitment to fractionated authority by determining whether power is legitimately possessed. Thus we understand significant federalism disputes in our age as framed by whether Congress has the authority to enact comprehensive health care reform legislation, or whether Congress has exceeded its authority in reenacting the Voting Rights Act's preclearance requirements. …

Taking The Business Out Of Work Product, Michele M. Destefano Beardslee

Over the past fifteen years, a common set of questions has surfaced in different areas of scholarship about the breadth of the corporate attorney's role: Should the corporate attorney provide business advice when providing legal advice? Should the corporate attorney provide counsel related to other disciplines such as public relations, social responsibility, morals, accounting, and/or investment banking? Should the corporate attorney prevent corporate wrongdoing? Questions like these resound in the scholarship addressing the risks and benefits of multi-disciplinary partnerships, gatekeeping, moral counseling, ancillary services, and the application of the attorney-client privilege. When looked at in combination, these segregated discussions equate …

Holden Caulfield Grows Up: Salinger V. Colting, The Promotion-Of-Progress Requirement, And Market Failure In A Derivative-Works Regime, John M. Newman

Articles

In 2009, the pseudonymous 'John David California" announced plans for U.S. publication of 6o Years Later: Coming Through the Rye, a "sequel" to JD. Salinger's canonical novel The Catcher in the Rye. Salinger reacted swiftly, bringing a copyright infingement suit to enjoin publication of the new work. The district court granted the injunction, effectively banning U.S. distribution of the sequel and unintentionally illustrating modern copyright law's troubling divergence from the purpose of the constitutional grant of copyright authority to Congress.

Economic analysis demonstrates the tension caused by the repeated, incremental expansion of copyright protections-at some point, the Copyright Act will …
