On February 17, 1992, Jeffrey Dahmer was sentenced to 15 consecutive terms of life imprisonment for killing and dismembering 15 young men and boys (Associated Press 1992a). Dahmer had been arrested six months earlier, on July 22, 1991. On January 13 he pled guilty to the fifteen murder counts against him, leaving open only the issue of his sanity. Jury selection began two weeks later, and the trial proper started on January 30. The jury heard two weeks of testimony about murder, mutilation and necrophilia; they deliberated for 5 hours before finding that Dahmer was sane when he committed these …

Defining "Disability": The Approach To Follow, Theodore J. St. Antoine

The definition of "disability" has once again become a central issue in workers' compensation law. I am partly responsible. A decade ago I served as the Governor's Special Counselor on Workers' Compensation. In my Reportto the Cabinet Council on Jobs and Economic Development, I stated: "If I could write on a clean slate, I would prefer to see the Michigan definition brought even closer into the mainstream of American law by declaring that 'disability' means a 'limitation of an employee's wage earning capacity in work suitable to his or her qualifications and training resulting from a personal injury or work …

Starting in 1969,1 we have had the honor and pleasure of co-authoring a goodly number of casebooks, texts, treatises, pocket parts, and annual supplements (more than twenty) with Wayne LaFave.2 On each occasion we have been impressed by the quality of his mind and the judiciousness of his temperament, and impressed as well (and sometimes amazed) by his speed and efficiency.

Until fairly recently, the work of people who thought and wrote about the law in its broadest cultural sense, and the work of those who thought and wrote about the law as it was practiced, did not intersect very much. The broad cultural issues tended to be the province of philosophers or political theorists or other academic social critics, while traditional legal scholarship - as it appeared in law school journals - remained firmly rooted in lawyers' questions. This is not to suggest that legal academics wrote nothing but practice manuals, but it is true that until the last twenty …

Active V. Passive Euthanasia: Why Keep The Distinction?, Yale Kamisar

In the past two decades, we have witnessed a "sea change in public, medical, and legislative judgments" about "letting die" and the "right to die." But it is no less true today than it was 35 years ago, when I first wrote about this subject, that in Anglo-American jurisprudence active euthanasia (what used to be called "mercy killing") is murder.

The Walker Endomorphism Algebra Of A Mixed Module, Brendan Goldsmith, P. Zanardo
Articles
Archimedian valuation domains R are characterised in terms of the endomorphism algebras of non-splitting mixed modules of rank 1, in the Walker category.

Cotorsion-Free Algebras As Endomorphism Algebras In L - The Discrete An Topological Cases., R. Gobel, Brendan Goldsmith
Articles
The discrete algebras A over a commutative ring R which can be realised as the full endomorphism algebra of a torsion-free R-module have been investigated by Dugas and Gobel under the additional set-theoretic axiom of constructibility, V = L. Many interesting results have been obtained for cotorsion-free algebras but the proofs involve rather elaborate calculations in linear algebra. Here these results are rederived in a more natural topological setting and substantial generalizations to topological algebras (which could not be handled in the previous linear algebra approach) are obtained. The results obtained are independent of the usual Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory ZFC.

The Kaplansky Test Problems - An Approach Via Radicals, R. Gobel, Brendan Goldsmith

The existence of non-free, K-free Abelian groups and modules (over some non-left perfect rings R) having prescribed endomorphism algebra is established within ZFC + 0 set theory. The principal technique used exploits free resolutions of non-free R-modules X and is similar to that used previously by Griffith and Eklof; much stronger results than have been obtained heretofore are obtained by coding additional information into the module X. As a consequence we can show, inter alia, that the Kaplansky Test Problems have negative answers for strongly K,-free Abelian groups of cardinality K1 in ZFC and assuming the weak Continuum Hypothesis.

The Christian Novelist In An Age Of Transition: A Case Study, Eamon Maher
Articles
At the present time in France, organized religion has largely lost its popular appeal. A centuries-old tradition of secularism has replaced God in the hearts of many. It is not therefore surprising that the 'Catholic novel' in its best-known form that of the thirties, when Bernanos and Mauriac wrote their greatest novels is no longer being written by contemporary novelists. That sort of novel simply does not reflect the current spiritual crisis in French society. But there are some writers, and Jean Sulivan (1913-1980 is a600g them, who do portray the human need of and quest for a divine presence …

Hysteresis And Anchoring Energy In Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals, Yuri Panarin
Hysteresis And Anchoring Energy In Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals, Yuri Panarin
Articles
The frequency dispersion of the coercive force of Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals (FLC) cells has been detected and examined in the range of infralow (lower than 0.1 Hz) frequencies. To clarify the low-frequency dispersion, the model has been suggested, based on the arrangement of free charges and well describing the experimental curves. The method for determination of the energy of FLC anchoring at the surface, developed on the basis of the static hysteresis loop, has been proposed. The dependence of bistability and the anchoring energy upon the orientant layer thickness has experimentally been investigated.

The Taming Of The Shrew: The Liberal Attempt To Mainstream Radical Feminist Theory, Jeanne L. Schroeder

The article critically examines the opposing views of Cass Sunstein and Catharine MacKinnon on pornography and its legal implications, highlighting their divergent definitions and approaches. Sunstein advocates for a narrow, violence-focused antipornography legislation, while MacKinnon pushes for a broader definition that encompasses gender subordination. The analysis reveals how Sunstein's critique of MacKinnon unintentionally weakens feminist challenges to masculinism by separating sexuality from power dynamics. MacKinnon's theory, rooted in a premodern Christian view of sexuality, posits that pornography constructs women as objects, reinforcing gender inequality. The article underscores the tension between legal reform and the deeper structural changes needed to address …
State-Interest Analysis And The Channelling Function In Family Law, Carl E. Schneider
State-Interest Analysis And The Channelling Function In Family Law, Carl E. Schneider

I want to develop some themes I advanced in my article entitled State-Interest Analysis in Fourteenth Amendment "Privacy" Law: An Essay on the Constitutionalization of Social issues. In that article I noted that while courts and commentators have lavished effort on the fundamental-rights side of privacy law, they have scanted the state-interest side, thereby producing crucial weaknesses in that law. I felt that state~interest discussions in privacy cases often seemed to me unsatisfying. This is an attempt to see why. A major difficulty is that states tend to advance and courts tend to accept quite narrow specifications of a statute's …

The article explores the concept of objectivity in legal theory, examining its complexity and the various ways it is defined and applied. It critiques the left's tendency to associate objectivity with liberalism and masculinity, while highlighting the right's defense of subjectivity. The analysis emphasizes the need for a nuanced understanding of objectivity's forms and implications in legal discourse.
