Identification And Profiling Of Socioeconomic And Health Characteristics Associated With Consumer Food Purchasing Behaviours Using Machine Learning, Daniel Burke, Martin Boudou, Jennifer Mccarthy, Majid Bahramian, Courage Krah, Christina Kenny, Paul Hynds, Anushree Priyadarshini Dec 2024

Identification And Profiling Of Socioeconomic And Health Characteristics Associated With Consumer Food Purchasing Behaviours Using Machine Learning, Daniel Burke, Martin Boudou, Jennifer Mccarthy, Majid Bahramian, Courage Krah, Christina Kenny, Paul Hynds, Anushree Priyadarshini

Articles

Food systems and food-related policies influence food consumption, dietary patterns, and human and environmental health. Consumers play a vital role in enhancing health and sustainability through their purchasing choices. To identify and cluster food purchasing behaviours and map relationships, a cross-sectional survey was conducted across Ireland with a sample size of 957 adults. Two-step cluster analysis, generalised linear models, and recursive partitioning and regression trees were used to elucidate adherence to identified food purchasing behavioural clusters. Three clusters (‘food quality’, ‘taste’, and ‘price’) were identified based on food purchasing priorities and statistically categorised. ‘Food quality’ members were significantly less likely …

Disability Discrimination By Clinical Algorithm, Elizabeth Pendo, Jennifer D. Oliva Dec 2024

Disability Discrimination By Clinical Algorithm, Elizabeth Pendo, Jennifer D. Oliva

Articles

In response to America’s escalating drug poisoning crisis, the federal government has funded, incentivized, and mandated that states adopt and implement prescription drug monitoring programs (“PDMPs”) to electronically surveil controlled substances and other “drugs of concern.” State PDMPs utilize proprietary, predictive software platforms that deploy algorithms to determine whether a patient is at risk for drug misuse, drug diversion, doctor shopping, or substance use disorder. PDMPs have never been validated by a federal agency or peer review, yet states have mandated their use throughout the health care delivery system.

Research demonstrates that clinical overreliance on the risk scores generated by …

Next Steps In Online Courts: Accelerating Access To Justice Through Court Technology, J.J. Prescott Dec 2024

Next Steps In Online Courts: Accelerating Access To Justice Through Court Technology, J.J. Prescott

Articles

For more than a decade, state courts have been expanding access to justice by adopting online dispute resolution (ODR) platforms and other outward-facing communication technologies. At a deep level, these reforms aim at improving society by bolstering the rule of law. At a surface level, these innovations recognize that the justice system works better when courts and law are easier and less costly to understand and use. In important respects, these efforts have been a success. The accessibility of many state courts is considerably more robust today than it was ten years ago, at least for small-stakes cases, like traffic …

Thermotherapy Has Sexually Dimorphic Responses In App/Ps1 Mice., Samuel A Mcfadden, Mackenzie R Peck, Lindsey N Sime, Makayla F Cox, Erol D Ikiz, Caleigh A Findley, Kathleen Quinn, Yimin Fang, Andrzej Bartke, Erin R Hascup, Kevin N Hascup Nov 2024

Thermotherapy Has Sexually Dimorphic Responses In App/Ps1 Mice., Samuel A Mcfadden, Mackenzie R Peck, Lindsey N Sime, Makayla F Cox, Erol D Ikiz, Caleigh A Findley, Kathleen Quinn, Yimin Fang, Andrzej Bartke, Erin R Hascup, Kevin N Hascup

Articles

A thermoregulatory decline occurs with age due to changes in muscle mass, vasoconstriction, and metabolism that lowers core body temperature (Tc). Although lower Tc is a biomarker of successful aging, we have previously shown this worsens cognitive performance in the APP/PS1 mouse model of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We hypothesized that elevating Tc with thermotherapy would improve metabolism and cognition in APP/PS1 mice. From 6-12 months of age, male and female APP/PS1 and C57BL/6 mice were chronically housed at 23 or 30°C. At 12 months of age, mice were assayed for insulin sensitivity, glucose tolerance, and spatial cognition. Plasma, hippocampal, and …

Sustainable Mobility: Machine Learning-Driven Deployment Of Ev Charging Points In Dublin, Ruairí De Fréin, Alexander Mutiso Mutua Mr

Articles

Electric vehicle (EV) drivers in urban areas face range anxiety due to the fear of running out of charge without timely access to charging points (CPs). The lack of sufficient numbers of CPs has hindered EV adoption and negatively impacted the progress of sustainable mobility. We propose a CP distribution algorithm that is machine learning-based and leverages population density, points of interest (POIs), and the most used roads as input parameters to determine the best locations for deploying CPs. The objects of the following research are as follows: (1) to allocate weights to the three parameters in a $6$ km …

Does The Age And Associated Ph Of Buttermilk Influence The Sensory Properties Of Soda Bread?, Liam Byrd, Pauline Danaher, Roisin Burke

Articles

Culinary proverbs, tips and tricks, or old wives’ tales lead to many variations in a recipe. In Molecular and Physical Gastronomy, the term “culinary precisions” is used to describe any piece of information that has something to do with the technical description of the dish, but does not belong to the definition (that is the minimum required to make the dish). The aim of this study was to test the culinary precision that “using aged cultured buttermilk” (which should be more acidic than fresh buttermilk) improves the sensory properties of soda bread by promoting the chemical reactions between the acidic …

Can Congress Give Unaffected Taxpayers Standing, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Nov 2024

Can Congress Give Unaffected Taxpayers Standing, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

A recurring problem in tax law arises when the IRS promulgates a regulation or a notice that is too favorable to taxpayers.1 The problem is that nobody has standing to challenge the regulation. The IRS cannot challenge its own regulation, and taxpayers affected by the regulation have no interest in challenging it (and even if they did, they cannot show a concrete injury sufficient to establish standing). Congress may intervene, but that is rare for a taxpayer-favorable regulation (indeed, Congress sometimes intervenes to block IRS attempts to roll back its own regulations). Taxpayers unaffected by the regulation do not have …

Confocal Raman Spectroscopy Coupled With In Vitro Permeation Testing To Study The Effects Of Formalin Fixation On The Skin Barrier Function Of Reconstructed Human Epidermis, Hichem Kichou, Franck Bonnier, Amanda C. Caritá, Hugh Byrne, Igor Choupra, Emilie Munnier Nov 2024

Caritá, Hugh Byrne, Igor Choupra, Emilie Munnier

Articles

Confocal Raman Spectroscopy is recognised as a potent tool for molecular characterisation of biological specimens. There is a growing demand for In Vitro Permeation Tests (IVPT) in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic areas, increasingly conducted using Reconstructed Human Epidermis (RHE) skin models. In this study, chemical fixation of RHE in 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin for 24 hours has been examined for storing RHE samples at 4°C for up to 21 days. Confocal Raman Spectroscopy, combined with Principal Components Analysis, revealed the molecular-level effects of fixation, notably in protein and lipid conformation within the stratum corneum and viable epidermis. IVPT by means …

Should Ireland Have Taxed Apple?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Nessa Ní Chasaide Nov 2024

Should Ireland Have Taxed Apple?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Nessa Ní Chasaide

Articles

On September 10 the EU’s Court of Justice issued its long-awaited decision in the Apple state aid case. Surprisingly, it reversed the EU’s General Court decision and held that the European Commission was correct in finding that Ireland had provided prohibited state aid to Apple, and therefore Apple must pay Ireland the €13 billion in taxes that it would have paid but for the illegal subsidy. This state aid case, the largest in the EU’s history, highlights significant issues about the legal governance of corporate tax. This article examines the notable features of the Court ruling, then outlines why we …

Don’T Be Cruel: Cruelty, Complicity, Self-Knowledge, And Growth, Sherman J. Clark Oct 2024

Don’T Be Cruel: Cruelty, Complicity, Self-Knowledge, And Growth, Sherman J. Clark

Articles

The papers in this symposium, and the larger body of scholarship to which this symposium is a contribution, ask us to attend to the often brutal and inhumane conditions in American jails and prisons. But why should we do that? Why should we confront the suffering of the incarcerated? Why should we ask ourselves whether that suffering is unjust, unnecessary, or even unconstitutional? The main reason, of course, is that we want to remedy those injustices. We care about the suffering of our fellow human beings, and people do not cease to be our fellow human beings merely because they …

Objective

With the increasing global burden of chronic diseases, there is the potential for conversational agents (CAs) to assist people in actively managing their conditions. This paper reviews different types of CAs used for chronic condition management, delving into their characteristics and the chosen study designs. This paper also discusses the potential of these CAs to enhance the health and well-being of people with chronic conditions.

Methods

A search was performed in February 2023 on PubMed, ACM Digital Library, Scopus, and IEEE Xplore. Studies were included if they focused on chronic disease management or prevention and if systems were evaluated …

Where Is China Now On Pillar 2?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Oct 2024

Where Is China Now On Pillar 2?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

China has been relatively quiet about pillar 2 of the G20/OECD base erosion and profit-shifting 2.0 project. In a recent Tax Notes article, Xiaoli Ortega wrote:

Will China join the global tax reform club? If so, when? Although the Chinese government has made repeated positive statements about the importance of the global minimum tax reform, it has not clarified when it would modify its domestic tax laws to incorporate the pillar 2 rules. However, this does not mean that China is not preparing itself for the reform. Recall that on August 1, 2022, the State Taxation Administration issued a governmental …

Towards An Iot-Enabled Digital Earth For Sdgs: The Data Quality Challenge, Msb Syed, Paula Kelly, Paul Stacey, Damon Berry

Articles

Digital Earth (DE), a technology offering real-time visualisation of Earth's processes, has shown promising results in aiding decision-making for a sustainable world, raising awareness about individual impacts on our planet, and supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) agenda. However, both DE and SDGs face a common obstacle: Data Quality (DQ). This review investigates the challenge of DQ in the context of DE for SDGs and explores how IoT can address this challenge and extend the reach of DE to support SDGs. Furthermore, the study discusses three core aspects; first, the potential of IoT as a data source …

Three-Dimensional Printing Limitations Of Polymers Reinforced With Continuous Stainless Steel Fibres And Curvature Stiffness, Alison J. Clarke, Andrew N. Dickson, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Denis P. Dowling Oct 2024

Three-Dimensional Printing Limitations Of Polymers Reinforced With Continuous Stainless Steel Fibres And Curvature Stiffness, Alison J. Clarke, Andrew N. Dickson, Vladimir Milosavljevic, Denis P. Dowling

Articles

This study investigates the printability limitations of 3D-printed continuous 316L stainless steel fibre-reinforced polymer composites obtained using the Materials Extrusion (MEX) technique. The objective was to better understand the geometric printing limitations of composites fabricated using continuous steel fibres, based on a combination of bending stiffness testing and piezoresistive property studies. The 0.5 mm composite filaments used in this study were obtained by co-extruding polylactic acid (PLA), with a 316 L stainless steel fibre (SSF) bundle. The composite printability limitations were evaluated by the printing of a series of ’teardrop’ shaped geometries with angles in the range from 5◦ to …

Blurring Boundaries: A Proposed Research Agenda For Ethical, Legal, Social, And Historical Studies At The Intersection Of Infectious And Genetic Disease, Seethal Jose, Juli Bollinger, Gail Geller, Jeremy Greene, Leslie Meltzer Henry, Brian Hutler, Eric Thomas Juengst, Jeffrey Kahn, Anna Mastroianni, Graham Mooney

Articles

Contemporary understanding of the mechanisms of disease increasingly points to examples of “genetic diseases” with an infectious component and of “infectious diseases” with a genetic component. Such blurred boundaries generate ethical, legal, and social issues and highlight historical contexts that must be examined when incorporating host genomic information into the prevention, outbreak control, and treatment of infectious diseases.

The Stockholm Resilience Centre has concluded that the number of "planetary boundaries" we are crossing has increased from three in 2009, when the Centre's researchers first introduced the concept, to six in 2023. Crossing these boundaries means humans are changing basic attributes of planetary systems to the point of risking the future of civilization. And the distinction between "safe" and "just" planetary boundaries raises questions regarding how to conceptualize the "good life." In this latest in a biannual series of essays, members of the Environmental Law Collaborative explore conceptions of the "good" as well as the various elements necessary to …

Antitrust After The Coming Wave, Daniel A. Crane Oct 2024

Antitrust After The Coming Wave, Daniel A. Crane

Articles

A coming wave of general-purpose technologies, including artificial intelligence ("AI"), robotics, quantum computing, synthetic biology, energy expansion, and nanotechnology, is likely to fundamentally reshape the economy and erode the assumptions on which the antitrust order is predicated. First, AI-driven systems will vastly improve firms' ability to detect (and even program) consumer preferences without the benefit of price signals, which will undermine the traditional information-producing benefit of competitive markets. Similarly, these systems will be able to determine comparative producer efficiency without relying on competitive signals. Second, AI systems will invert the salient characteristics of human managers, whose intentions are opaque but …

A Global Wealth Tax?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Sep 2024

A Global Wealth Tax?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

Mitt Romney famously said during his 2012 presidential campaign that “corporations are people.” Mindy Herzfeld’s column comparing the proposed 2 percent global wealth tax on billionaires with the corporate minimum tax (pillar 2) raises the opposite question: Are people like corporations for tax purposes? I would say no, for several reasons.

Sourcing Derivatives: Time To Reverse The Rule?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Sep 2024

Sourcing Derivatives: Time To Reverse The Rule?, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

In their excellent Tax Notes article on the application of withholding taxes on derivatives, Lorenz F. Haselberger and Michael B. Shulman write that:

A taxpayer entering into a derivative may derive income of a kind that is different from the kind of income that would have been realized had the taxpayer instead acquired the underlying asset, resulting in different U.S. withholding tax treatment.

For example, when a foreign taxpayer enters into a swap referencing an equity security or interest rate, amounts it receives that correspond to dividends or interest generally are characterized as periodic payments on a financial contract rather …

Analysis Of Data Containing Outliers, David L. Farnsworth Sep 2024

Analysis Of Data Containing Outliers, David L. Farnsworth

Articles

A strategy for accommodating outlying observations, as well as non-representative, suspect, missing, or otherwise troubling observations, is described. Each unusual observation is decomposed into the sum of two components. One component is the value implied by the trusted observations in the data set. The other component is the unusual part. In this way, the fitting of the data set can then proceed, and, additionally, a numerical value can be ascribed to the unusual part. The method offers not only an antidote for observations with irregular numerical values, which often have the power to contaminate and alter analyses, but also a …

Analysis Of R X C Tables Containing Outliers, David L. Farnsworth Sep 2024

Analysis Of R X C Tables Containing Outliers, David L. Farnsworth

Articles

We examine the problem of accommodating outliers in 𝑟 × 𝑐 tables of measurement data when there are no replications. The suggested strategy for the determination of the cells that contain outliers and for handling them analytically is easily understood and implemented in practice and presented in even the most elementary statistics course along with the course’s ANOVA material.

Once More: Digital Services Taxes Should Be Creditable, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah Aug 2024

Once More: Digital Services Taxes Should Be Creditable, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

In a previous column, I argued that digital services taxes should be creditable as in-lieu-of taxes under section 903. A new analysis by Jane Gravelle sheds further light on this topic but does not change the outcome.

Gravelle makes three arguments against the creditability of DSTs. First, she argues that the whole concept underlying both pillar 1 and DSTs (allocating value to market jurisdictions) is wrong, and therefore they cannot be justified. Second, she argues that DSTs are passed on in full to consumers and that this precludes creditability. Finally, she argues that DSTs are discriminatory excise taxes on U.S. …

Defining Relevant Markets In Digital Ecosystems, Daniel A. Crane Aug 2024

Defining Relevant Markets In Digital Ecosystems, Daniel A. Crane

Articles

Traditional market definition focuses on the substitutability of two products or geographies. In digital ecosystems, competition often occurs in important ways that elide definition in conventional substitutability terms. This Article considers three kinds of economic rivalry that do not fit the conventional market definition mold: (1) Single-side competition: In two sided markets, firms may compete on just one side of the market. For example, Google and Facebook compete for the same advertisers, but their users on the other side of the market do not necessarily think of the offerings (social media and universal search) as substitutes; (2) Ecosystem competition: Technology …

Revisiting The Conceptual Terrains Of The Right To Accessibility In India: The Role Of Judicial Enforcement, Sanjay Jain, Malika Jain Aug 2024

Revisiting The Conceptual Terrains Of The Right To Accessibility In India: The Role Of Judicial Enforcement, Sanjay Jain, Malika Jain

Articles

The main objective of this paper is to critically reflect on the right to accessibility of persons with disabilities in India, with special focus on the context of public streets and environments. The paper draws on work carried out during the India-related part of the Inclusive Public Space Project, as well as judicial pronouncements, and the norms evolved by India as a party to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. In this paper, we briefly set out competing conceptions of accessibility and evaluate the constitutional and statutory manifestations of the principle of accessibility. Further, the …

Theoretical Justifications For Trade Secrets Protection Of Routine Business Information, Timothy Murphy Aug 2024

Theoretical Justifications For Trade Secrets Protection Of Routine Business Information, Timothy Murphy

Articles

For over a century trade secret law has protected internal business information from misappropriation by departing employees. Over this time, courts developed various limiting doctrines to minimize the impact of this broad protection on employee mobility in particular cases. However, the workplace has changed significantly over this time and these changes raise substantial questions as to whether there is any valid theoretical justification for continuing to protect routine business information under trade secret law. In an environment where the vast majority of trade secrets claims are against former employees, the lack of sound justification for protecting routine business information, the …

Sidestepping Substance: How Administrative Law Plays An Outsized Role In Shaping Environmental Policy And Why Recalibration Is Necessary, Sanne H. Knudsen Aug 2024

Sidestepping Substance: How Administrative Law Plays An Outsized Role In Shaping Environmental Policy And Why Recalibration Is Necessary, Sanne H. Knudsen

Articles

Administrative law and environmental law are companion fields. Still, they are not interchangeable. They promote different values. And yet, sometimes when courts resolve environmental disputes by relying on administrative doctrines, courts elevate the values of administrative law over those codified in environmental statutes. This is particularly concerning when courts rely on judicially-created administrative law doctrines to sidestep congressional intent as expressed by the substantive aims of environmental statutes.

To reduce the risk of sidestepping—whether inadvertent or intentional—this Article critically examines how administrative law doctrines can undermine environmental law. Drawing on prominent case examples, including the Supreme Court decision in Sackett …

Sexual Assault Victims Face A Penalty For Adjacent Consent, Jillian J. Jordan, Roseanna Sommers Aug 2024

Sexual Assault Victims Face A Penalty For Adjacent Consent, Jillian J. Jordan, Roseanna Sommers

Articles

Sexual assault is pervasively underreported, and victims are often blamed and stigmatized. We highlight an important but overlooked factor that may contribute to these outcomes: adjacent consent. Even when a rape is objected to verbally and physically, and accomplished only through violent force, respondents see the victim as less virtuous and deserving of support if she previously consented to something sexual with her perpetrator (e.g., kissing, foreplay, sex on a prior occasion). Our findings are striking in an age of “no means no” and “affirmative consent”—and notably hold among even young and politically progressive respondents who do not otherwise disapprove …
