Heterodyne Detection For Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors, Hedi Bellil, Mustafa Abushagur Jan 2000

Heterodyne Detection For Fiber Bragg Grating Sensors, Hedi Bellil, Mustafa Abushagur

Articles

In this paper, we present a Fiber-Bragg-Grating-based temperature sensor. The technique employs heterodyne detection using two Fiber Bragg Gratings. One of the gratings is used as a reference (local oscillator) and the second as a sensing arm. This sensor uses a Folded Mach-Zehnder interferometer. As the temperature changes, the Bragg wavelength of the FBG shifts. The heterodyne detection is used to detect the frequency difference between the reference and sensing signals that is caused by the temperature change. The dynamic range and sensitivity of the sensor were analyzed and presented.

Improved Direct Solver For Building Energy Simulation, Michael Crowley, Saleem Hashmi Jan 2000

Improved Direct Solver For Building Energy Simulation, Michael Crowley, Saleem Hashmi

Articles

Finite difference methods, when applied to the differential equations modelling energy flows in buildings, give rise to a system of non-linear difference equations. A frequently used direct solution method involving linearization is analysed and a related method proposed. These and one other connected method are compared using a building related test problem prepared for this purpose. The proposed numerical method is found to produce least error, about 30% less than the commonly used method, and it is recommended for inclusion in building energy simulation software. A fundamental method for estimating the pre conditioning period of a building, arising from the …

Using Technology To Educate The Public, Stephen M. Johnson Jan 2000

Using Technology To Educate The Public, Stephen M. Johnson

Articles

While the primary focus of any law faculty will always be its law students, the Internet and other new technologies enable law teachers to assume a central role in providing free legal education to the public. Although many schools are experimenting with distance learning and computer-assisted legal educa- tion to train law students, the real power of those tools may be their potential to facilitate public access to legal information. Traditionally, educating the general public has not been a primary responsibility of law professors, but today we have not only an opportunity, but an obligation, to develop computer-based legal education …

The Death Of Privacy?, A. Michael Froomkin Jan 2000

The Death Of Privacy?, A. Michael Froomkin

Articles

The rapid deployment of privacy-destroying technologies by governments and businesses threatens to make informational privacy obsolete. The first part of this article describes a range of current technologies to which the law has yet to respond effectively. These include: routine collection of transactional data, growing automated surveillance in public places, deployment of facial recognition technology and other biometrics, cell-phone tracking, vehicle tracking, satellite monitoring, workplace surveillance, Internet tracking from cookies to "clicktrails", hardware-based identifiers, intellectual property-protecting "snitchware," and sense-enhanced searches that allow observers to see through everything from walls to clothes. The cumulative and reinforcing effect of these technologies may …

Internet Sexual Predators: Protecting Children In The Global Community, Madeleine M. Plasencia Jan 2000

Internet Sexual Predators: Protecting Children In The Global Community, Madeleine M. Plasencia

Articles

The Internet, serving as the largest network of computers in the world, has provided the horizontal parallax over which all can participate in communication and transaction, education and entertainment4 It also serves a community of participants and beneficiaries whose goals are not always shared or legal. The rise of this advanced technology has led to a new "red light district."

Unlike the physical spaces available for the distribution of pornography and sexual favors for money, the Internet, with its lack of structure, has led to an unimaginable amount of pornography available for any on-line spectator.' Information necessary for consummation of …

Legal Education In The Digital Age, Stephen M. Johnson Jan 2000

Legal Education In The Digital Age, Stephen M. Johnson

Articles

The reports of the demise of traditional law school teaching methods have been greatly exaggerated, however. Historically, reforms in legal education have moved glacially. For reasons described in this Article, it is unlikely that law schools and the American Bar Association will radically restructure legal education in the coming decades, regardless of any potential benefits. Part I of this Article provides a short history of legal education and the introduction of technology into legal education. Part H examines the potential use of technology to enhance traditional law school teaching, or to replace it with "classroom-free" or "extended classroom" teaching methods. …

Not "If" But "How": Reflecting On The Aba Commission's Recommendations On Multidisciplinary Practice, John H. Matheson, Edward S. Adams Jan 2000

Not "If" But "How": Reflecting On The Aba Commission's Recommendations On Multidisciplinary Practice, John H. Matheson, Edward S. Adams

Articles

Multidisciplinary practice (MDP) has been aptly described as the, "most important issue facing the legal profession today." The American Bar Association's Commission on Multidisciplinary Practice (Commission) surprised most observers on June 8, 1999 by recommending that the American Bar Association (ABA) amend the Model Rules of Professional Conduct (Model Rules) to allow lawyers to combine with, and share fees with, other professionals within a single professional entity. Under the proposal, lawyers could create partnerships with accountants, developers, engineers, bankers, and all other professionals, thereby giving clients access to one-stop shopping at multidisciplinary firms.

Who Owns The Customer? The Emerging Law Of Commercial Transactions In Electronic Customer Data, Jane Kaufman Winn, James R. Wrathall Jan 2000

Who Owns The Customer? The Emerging Law Of Commercial Transactions In Electronic Customer Data, Jane Kaufman Winn, James R. Wrathall

Articles

The Information Revolution is changing the way commerce acted and value is defined within transactions. Before the Internet and "e-business" took center stage, "electronic commerce" meant electronic data interchange, just-in-time inventory systems, supply chain automation, and corporate reengineering.

But the rise of the Internet as a communications medium has coincided with a shift in management focus, from merely trying to improve the efficiency of business logistics systems to a more holistic perspective on improving customer relationships. Intangible assets such as intellectual property rights, human capital in the form of employee knowledge, and established relationships with customers and suppliers are playing …

Analyze This: A Law And Economics Agenda For The Patent System, Rebecca S. Eisenberg Jan 2000

Analyze This: A Law And Economics Agenda For The Patent System, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Articles

Legal scholars and economists might enhance the value and impact of their work by making more effective use of each other's knowledge and capabilities. Legal scholars can offer a more nuanced understanding of the legal rules that underlie the patent system and the doctrinal levers that might be manipulated in furtherance of public policy goals. Economists bring to bear a set of analytical and methodological tools that could shed considerable light on what these doctrinal levers are doing and which of them we ought to be manipulating. Together, we have a better chance of asking the right questions and thinking …

Autistic Contracts (Symposium), James J. White Jan 2000

Autistic Contracts (Symposium), James J. White

Articles

In this paper I address the question whether the law should affirm the offeror's inference and should bind the offeree to the terms proposed by the offeror even in circumstances where the offeree may not intend to accept those terms and where an objective observer might not draw the inference of agreement from the offeree's act. Modem practice and current proposals concerning contract formation in Revised Article 2 and in the Uniform Computer Information Transactions Act (nee Article 2B) press these issues on us more forcefully than old practices and different law did. 1 But contractual autism is not new; …

Corporate Governance Lessons From Russian Enterprise Fiascos, Merritt B. Fox, Michael A. Heller Jan 2000

Corporate Governance Lessons From Russian Enterprise Fiascos, Merritt B. Fox, Michael A. Heller

Articles

This Article draws on a rich array of deviant behavior in Russian enterprises to craft lessons for corporate governance theory. First, Professors Fox and Heller define corporate governance by looking to the economic functions of the firm. Based on this definition, they develop a typology that comprehensively shows all the channels through which bad corporate governance can inflict damage on a country's real economy. Second, they explain the causes of Russian enterprise fiascoes by looking to the particular initial conditions prevailing at privatization-untenable firm boundaries and insider allocation of firm shares-and the bargaining dynamics that have followed. This focus offers …

Micro-Raman Study Of Stress Distribution Generated In Silicon During Proximity Rapid Thermal Diffusion, M. Nolan, T. Perova, R. A. Moore, C. J. Moore, Kevin Berwick, H. S. Gamble Jan 2000

Micro-Raman Study Of Stress Distribution Generated In Silicon During Proximity Rapid Thermal Diffusion, M. Nolan, T. Perova, R. A. Moore, C. J. Moore, Kevin Berwick, H. S. Gamble

Articles

proximity rapid thermal diffusion (RTD). A compressive stress was found on the whole silicon wafer after 15 s RTD. After 165 s RTD, the distribution of the stress across the wafer was found to be different: compressive at the edge and tensile at the middle. Thermal stress was relieved in the RTD wafers via slip dislocations. These slip dislocations were observed in the product wafers using optical microscopy. Slip lines propagated from the wafer edge to the wafer centre in eight preferred positions of maximum induced stress. The thermally induced stress and the slip dislocation density increased with time spent …

Scenario Building: A Suitable Method For Strategic Construction Industry Planning?, John Ratcliffe

Articles

This paper is primarily about the Scenario Method. How scenario building, planning or learning exercises can profitably be used to identify, develop and test alternative plans, policies and practices that might be proposed in exploring and preparing for strategic decision-making in the construction industry. The method has been widely used in business, industry and government for over thirty years as an unrivalled technique to learn about the future before it happens. The paper examines the principles, practice and pitfalls of Scenario Building with the prime aim of presenting the technique as one singularly relevant to the study of the construction …

Rotary Honing: A Variant Of The Taylor Paint-Scraper Problem, Christopher Hills, H. Moffatt Jan 2000

Rotary Honing: A Variant Of The Taylor Paint-Scraper Problem, Christopher Hills, H. Moffatt

Articles

The three-dimensional Row in a corner of fixed angle α induced by the rotation in its plane of one of the boundaries is considered. A local similarity solution valid in a neighbourhood of the centre of rotation is obtained and the streamlines are shown to be closed curves. The effects of inertia are considered and are shown to be significant in a small neighbourhood of the plane of symmetry of the flow. A simple experiment confirms that the streamlines are indeed nearly closed; their projections on planes normal to the line of intersection of the boundaries are precisely the 'Taylor' …

Wrong Turn In Cyberspace: Using Icann To Route Around The Apa And The Constitution, A. Michael Froomkin Jan 2000

Wrong Turn In Cyberspace: Using Icann To Route Around The Apa And The Constitution, A. Michael Froomkin

Articles

The Internet relies on an underlying centralized hierarchy built into the domain name system (DNS) to control the routing for the vast majority of Internet traffic. At its heart is a single data file, known as the "root." Control of the root provides singular power in cyberspace.

This Article first describes how the United States government found itself in control of the root. It then describes how, in an attempt to meet concerns that the United States could so dominate an Internet chokepoint, the U.S. Department of Commerce (DoC) summoned into being the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers …

Environmental Applications Of Remote Sensing, Anthony Vodacek

Articles

This article may also be accessed from the publisher's website at http://www.svifsi.ch/revue/pages/issues/n004/no004.html Remote sensing is routinely used for understanding many aspects of the earth environment that are important to sustainability. Remote sensing is used in weather forecasting and global climate studies, natural hazard analysis, crop condition and yield prediction, and forestry applications, for example. The techniques and hardware used to obtain the remotely sensed data for these applications are as widely varying as the applications themselves. Remote imaging systems may collect spectral data of reflected sunlight, emitted thermal or microwave radiation, or reflected radar signals to provide the desired information …

Articles

The Amateur Sky Survey (TASS) is a loose confederation of amateur and professional astronomers. We describe the design and construction of our Mark III system, a set of wide-field drift-scan CCD cameras which monitor the celestial equator down to thirteenth magnitude in several passbands. We explain the methods by which images are gathered, processed, and reduced into lists of stellar positions and magnitudes. Over the period October, 1996, to November, 1998, we compiled a large database of photometric measurements. One of our results is the tenxcat catalog, which contains measurements on the standard Johnson-Cousins system for 367,241 stars; it contains …
