Coordinate Transformation-Free Observer-Based Adaptive Estimation Of Distorted Single-Phase Grid Voltage Signal, Hafiz Ahmed, Mominul Ahsan, Mohamed Benbouzid, Alhussein Albarbar, Mohammad Shahjalal, Samet Biricik

Articles

This paper studies the phase and frequency estimation problem of single-phase grid voltagesignal in the presence of DC offset and harmonics. For this purpose, a novel parameterized linear modelof the grid voltage signal is considered where the unknown frequency of the grid is considered as theparameter. Based on the developed model, a linear observer (Luenberger type) is proposed. Then usingLyapunov stability theory, an estimator of the unknown grid frequency is developed. In order to deal with thegrid harmonics, multiple parallel observers are then proposed. The proposed technique is inspired by otherLuenberger observers already proposed in the literature. Those techniques use …

Designing Law To Enable Adaptive Governance Of Modern Wicked Problems, Barbara Cosens

Articles

In the twenty-first century, our planet is facing a period of rapid and fundamental change resulting from human domination so extensive it is expected to be visible in the geologic record. The accelerating rate of change compounds the global social-ecological challenges already deemed "wicked" due to conflicting goals and scientific uncertainty. Understanding how connected natural and human systems respond to change is essential to understanding the governance required to navigate these modern wicked problems. This Article views change through the lens of complexity and resilience theories to inform the challenges of governance in a world dominated by such massive and …

If You Provide, Will They Ride? Motivators And Deterrents To Shared Micro-Mobility, David Pimentel

Articles

Bike share, e-bike share, and e-scooter systems (shared micro-mobility) are gaining popularity throughout the United States and internationally, but the optimal system design has not been determined. This study investigated motivators and deterrents to the use of such systems in the Pacific Northwest with secondary data, participant observations, depth interviews, and an on-line survey to users and non-users. The survey was administered in all cities in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho that have shared micro-mobility systems. The strongest motivators reported were exercise and enjoyment. The strongest deterrents were weather, danger from automobile traffic, and insufficient bike lanes and paths. The latter …

Businesses can benefit from university–industry collaborations, yet they rarely take full advantage of them. Scientists who serve as principal investigators (PIs) act as the nucleus of university–industry collaborations and partner with industry to cocreate value. We conducted a case study of PIs at publicly funded research universities, institutes, and organizations in Ireland to explore how having commercial experience influences how PIs approach technology transfer and how they develop new business models, products, and services. We learned that PIs’ prior commercial experience influences how they approach their research, project work, and project selection and affects how they commercialize knowledge and outputs …

Anti-Hypochlorite, Antioxidant, And Catalytic Activity Of Three Polyphenol-Rich Super-Foods Investigated With The Use Of Coumarin-Based Sensors, Karolina Starzak, Tomasz Świergosz, Arkadiusz Matwijczuk, Bernadette Creaven, Janusz Podleśny, Dariusz Karcz

Articles

The anti-hypochlorite activity of açaí (Euterpe oleracea Mart.), goji (Lycium barbarum L.) and schisandra (Schisandra chinensis) fruit extracts were assessed by determining the reactive chlorine species (RCS)-scavenging ability of these three “super-food” berries. In addition, the aqueous extracts obtained were employed as both the media and the catalyst in a green chemistry approach to the synthesis of a coumarin-based fluorescence turn-off sensor, which was then used for anti-hypochlorite activity testing. The aqueous extracts were also assessed for total phenolic content (TPC), using the Folin–Ciocalteu method, and the antioxidant activity using the ABTS+• assay. Moreover, the main water-soluble polyphenolic constituents of …

Deadly Drones? Why Faa Regulations Miss The Mark On Drone Safety, Steve Calandrillo, Jason Oh, Ari Webb Jan 2020

Deadly Drones? Why Faa Regulations Miss The Mark On Drone Safety, Steve Calandrillo, Jason Oh, Ari Webb

Articles

A rapidly growing commercial drone industry has prompted the introduction of numerous regulations governing American airspace. Congress has tasked the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with “developing plans for the use of the navigable airspace to ensure the safety of aircraft and the efficient use” of American skies. While well-intended, the FAA has departed from Congressional will by imposing an excessive regulatory regime that threatens to stifle drone technology and innovation. In fact, many FAA regulations fail to address the very problem they seek to fix, namely the safety of our airspace. The unfortunate result is that myriad scientific and pragmatic …

Banking The Unbanked Innovators, Xuan-Thao Nguyen Jan 2020

Banking The Unbanked Innovators, Xuan-Thao Nguyen

Articles

Innovators are necessary for the engine of economic growth. Why do banks still find innovators, from startups to high growth companies, unattractive as potential customers for banking and lending products? Banks typically make business loans to established companies with positive cash flow and physical assets. Banks are eager to make loans in real estate transactions. Throughout modern time, banks persistently avoid banking innovators. Nationwide, only five outlier banks are defying conventional banking practices, and the leader among them is Silicon Valley Bank. Against all the odds, Silicon Valley Bank began as a local, community bank for innovators in 1982, and …

Inclusive Patents For Open Innovation, Toshiko Takenaka Jan 2020

Inclusive Patents For Open Innovation, Toshiko Takenaka

Articles

The post-internet era has greatly affected commercial firms' innovation processes. The complexity and cumulative nature of emerging technologies under the post-internet era has made commercial firms reevaluate their innovation processes and has increased the role of individual innovators. Firms dealing with emerging technologies cannot make products without infringing on patents held by others, as their products are covered by numerous overlapping patents. Many of these firms work with individual innovators and embrace the open-source philosophy that ensures open access to technologies. These firms can no longer use patents for excluding others without risking infringement counterclaims, leading to the development of …

Killing Wotus 2015: Why Three Rulemakings May Not Be Enough, Stephen M. Johnson Jan 2020

Killing Wotus 2015: Why Three Rulemakings May Not Be Enough, Stephen M. Johnson

Articles

This Article will discuss the procedural and substantive flaws in the three rulemaking efforts by the agencies. One or more of the rules (or the 2015 rule) will likely be litigated for the next several years and, ultimately, it is likely that the question of the scope of the federal government’s jurisdiction over “waters of the United States” will return to the Supreme Court. However, since challenges to those rules must originate in Federal district courts, it could take some time before the question returns to the Court.

Part II of this Article discusses the 2015 rule, including the motivation …

Confinement Of Monolithic Stationary Phases In Targeted Regions Of 3d-Printed Titanium Devices Using Thermal Polymerization, Marta Passamonti, Ischa L. Bremer, Suhas H. Nawada, Sinead A. Currivan, Andrea F.G. Gargano, Peter J. Schoenmakers

Articles

Abstract

In this study, we have prepared thermally initiated polymeric monolithic stationary phases within discrete regions of 3D-printed titanium devices. The devices were created with controllable hot and cold regions. The monolithic stationary phases were first locally created in capillaries inserted into the channels of the titanium devices. The homogeneity of the monolith structure and the interface length were studied by scanning a capacitively coupled conductivity contactless detector (C4D) along the length of the capillary. Homogeneous monolithic structures could be obtained within a titanium device equipped with a hot and cold jacket connected to two water baths. The confinement method …

Acetaldehyde Production By Rothia Mucilaginosa Isolates From Patients With Oral Leukoplakia., Abdrazak Amer, Aine Whelan, Nezar N. Al-Hebshi, Claire M. Healy, Gary P. Moran Jan 2020

Acetaldehyde Production By Rothia Mucilaginosa Isolates From Patients With Oral Leukoplakia., Abdrazak Amer, Aine Whelan, Nezar N. Al-Hebshi, Claire M. Healy, Gary P. Moran

Articles

Rothia mucilaginosa has been found at high abundance on oral leukoplakia (OLK). The ability of clinical isolates to produce acetaldehyde (ACH) from ethanol has not been investigated. The objective of the current study was to determine the capacity of R. mucilaginosa isolates recovered from OLK to generate ACH. Analysis of R. mucilaginosa genomes (n = 70) shows that this species does not normally encode acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) required for detoxification of ACH. The predicted OLK metagenome also exhibited reduced ALDH coding capacity. We analysed ACH production in 8 isolates of R. mucilaginosa and showed that this species is capable of …

Microfluidic Flow Direction And Rate Vector Sensor Based On A Partially Gold-Coated Tfbg, Changyu Shen, Dejun Liu, Xiaokang Lian, Tingting Lang, Chunliu Zhao, Yuliya Semenova, Jacques Albert

Articles

In microfluidic chips applications, the monitoring of the rate and the direction of a microfluidic flow is very important. Here, we demonstrate a liquid flow rate and a direction sensor using a partially gold-coated tilted fiber Bragg grating (TFBG) as the sensing element. Wavelength shifts and amplitude changes of the TFBG transmission resonances in the near infrared reveal the direction of the liquid flowing along the fiber axis in the vicinity of the TFBG due to a nanoscale gold layer over part of the TFBG. For a device length of 10 mm (and a diameter of 125 µm for easy …
