Paths, Cycles And Wheels In Graphs Without Antitriangles, Stanislaw Radziszowski, Xia Jin
Paths, Cycles And Wheels In Graphs Without Antitriangles, Stanislaw Radziszowski, Xia Jin
Articles
We investigate paths, cycles and wheels in graphs with independence number of at most 2, in particular we prove theorems characterizing all such graphs which are hamiltonian. Ramsey numbers of the form R (G,K3), for G being a path, a cycle or a wheel, are known to be 2n (G) - 1, except for some small cases. In this paper we derive and count all critical graphs 1 for these Ramsey numbers.

The minimal number of triples required to represent all quintuples on an n-element set is determined for n <= 13 and all extremal constructions are found. In particular we establish that there is a unique minimal system on 13 points, namely the 52 collinear triples of the projective plane of order 3.
Simulation Study Of Changes In Ultrasound Speckle Statistics With The System Point Spread Function, Navalgund A. H. K. Rao, Hui Zhu
Simulation Study Of Changes In Ultrasound Speckle Statistics With The System Point Spread Function, Navalgund A. H. K. Rao, Hui Zhu
Articles
The intensity point signal-to-noise ratio, SNRI, characterizing the ultrasound speckle statistics, depends on the tissue scattering microstructure and the imaging systems point spread function. Both should be described in three-dimensional space. Therefore, a three-dimensional simulation model is used in this paper to generate a rf signal and study the variations in SNRI with the transducer center frequency and bandwidth. Results are in agreement with existing theoretical predictions. A possible method to analyze the SNRI data is also presented that can produce a straight line slope as a feature value that depends on the tissue scattering microstructure only. Such a feature …

Saving Public Television: The Remand Of Turner Broadcasting And The Future Of Cable Regulation, Monroe E. Price, Donald W. Hawthorne
Articles
The article critiques the Supreme Court's decision in *Turner Broadcasting* for failing to adequately address key First Amendment issues, particularly the distinction between commercial and noncommercial broadcasters. While the Court focused on historical context and government-media relationships, it overlooked the unique role of noncommercial broadcasters in serving public interests like education and culture. The authors argue for a more nuanced First Amendment approach that supports public interest media without infringing on free speech rights, urging courts to recognize the value of noncommercial broadcasting.

Three Lessons From Law And Literature, Richard H. Weisberg
Three Lessons From Law And Literature, Richard H. Weisberg
Articles
The article explores the intersection of law and literature, emphasizing the narrative nature of legal discourse and the importance of "considerate communication" in legal practice. It critiques the dominance of economic analysis in law and advocates for a more nuanced understanding of language and ethics in legal education and practice. The author uses literary works, such as Herman Melville's Billy Budd Sailor, and historical examples, like the Vichy regime in France, to illustrate the ethical and practical implications of how legal language is used.

We apply the simulated annealing algorithm to the combinatorial optimization problem of typewriter keyboard design, yielding nearly optimal key-placements using a figure of merit based on English letter pair frequencies and finger travel-times. Our keyboards are demonstrably superior to both the ubiquitous QWERTY keyboard and the less common Dvorak keyboard. The paper is constructed as follows: first we discuss the historical background of keyboard design; this includes August Dvorak's work, and a figure-of-merit (scalar) metric for keyboards. We discuss a theory of keyboard designs: why keyboard design is a combinatorial problem, how combinatorial problems are typically solved, what is simulated …

Before we can extrapolate to the next generation of human-computer interfaces, a relevant question is "How many generations of human-computer interfaces have there been so far, and what were they?"
Blur Identification By Residual Spectral Matching, Andreas Savakis, H. Joel Trussell
Blur Identification By Residual Spectral Matching, Andreas Savakis, H. Joel Trussell
Articles
The estimation of the point spread function (PSF) for blur identification, often a necessary first step in the restoration of real images, method is presented. The PSF estimate is chosen from a collection of candidate PSFs, which may be constructed using a parametric model or from experimental measurements. The PSF estimate is selected to provide the best match between the restoration residual power spectrum and its expected value, derived under the assumption that the candidate PSF is equal to the true PSF. Several distance measures were studied to determine which one provides the best match. The a priori knowledge required …

Medical Ultrasound Imaging Using Pulse Compression, Navalgund Rao, Sumat Mehra
Articles
Pulse compression techniques can play a major role in improving image quality in medical ultrasound. A prototype imaging and digital signal processing system incorporating this technique is described. Feasibility studies were performed and system resolution was evaluated with experiments on tissue mimicking phantoms.
Evaluation Of A Pulse Coding Technique For Speckle Reduction And Structure Characterization, Navalgund Rao, M. Abury
Evaluation Of A Pulse Coding Technique For Speckle Reduction And Structure Characterization, Navalgund Rao, M. Abury
Articles
Pulse coding techniques have been used in the past primarily to improve signal to (electronic) noise ratio. However, the flexibility inherent in pulse coding can be exploited to solve several problems in medical imaging and nondestructive testing. We have experimentally examined its potential for two such problems: (i) speckle reduction with multispectral imaging and data averaging; (ii) structural characterization of scattering medium on a scale below the resolution of the imaging system. The ability to change the point spread function and the spectral content with frequency modulated pulse coding has been utilized. Water filled sponge with pore size much smaller …
On The Accuracy Of Psf Representation In Image Restoration, Andreas Savakis, H. Joel Trussell
On The Accuracy Of Psf Representation In Image Restoration, Andreas Savakis, H. Joel Trussell
Articles
Point spread function (PSF) models derived from physical optics provide a more accurate representation of real blurs than simpler models based on geometrical optics. However, the physical PSF models do not always result in a significantly better restoration, due to the coarse sampling of the recording device and insufficiently high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels. Low recording resolutions result in aliasing errors in the PSF and suboptimal restorations. A high-resolution representation of the PSF where aliasing errors are minimized is used to obtain improved restorations. The SNR is the parameter which ultimately limits the restoration quality and determines the need for …
Controlling Chaos In Semiconductor Laser Devices, Athanasios Gavrielides, Vassilios Kovanis, Paul Alsing
Controlling Chaos In Semiconductor Laser Devices, Athanasios Gavrielides, Vassilios Kovanis, Paul Alsing
Articles
In most encounters, chaos is considered a nuisance, if not a downright detriment to system performance, especially in laser devices. However, the presence of chaos in a system can act as a rich source of complex frequencies if one only had a way of accessing them. In this work we present a discussion of the recent work of Ott, Grebogi and Yorke on controlling chaos as applied to a semiconductor diode laser subject to optical feedback via an external mirror. In the regime in which the laser is chaotic, stabilization can be achieved by sampling the output intensity and feeding …
Synchronization Of Chaotic Trajectories In A Diode Resonator Using Proportional Feedback, Timothy Newell, Paul Alsing, Athanasios Gavrielides
Synchronization Of Chaotic Trajectories In A Diode Resonator Using Proportional Feedback, Timothy Newell, Paul Alsing, Athanasios Gavrielides
Articles
We have demonstrated experimentally a proportional feedback algorithm for the synchronization of chaotic time signals generated from a pair of independent diode resonator circuits. Synchronization was easily obtained and occurred for relative feedback levels between three and eight percent of the driving voltage. Once established, the synchronization persisted throughout the whole range of the resonator bifurcation diagram without varying the gain of the feedback.

This article may be accessed from the Scholarly Journal Archive (additional fees may apply) at: http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0746-8342%28199311%2924%3A5%3C462%3ASR%3E2.0.CO%3B2-6&size=LARGE&origin=JSTOR-enlargePage A few years ago, David and Vivian Kraines [2] reviewed several commercially available software packages that can perform standard linear algebra computations. Most of these packages can perform only simple calculations on matrices of limited size (10 x 10 maximum) and all of them can do only either decimal or rational arithmetic. None has the ability to perform the symbolic calculations that are as much a part of linear algebra as arithmetic calculations. Computer algebra systems (CAS) like Maple and Mathematica can perform operations …
