Locus Of Supply And Global Manufacturing, John Ettlie, Kannan Sethuraman
Locus Of Supply And Global Manufacturing, John Ettlie, Kannan Sethuraman
Articles
Interest in supply chain management has been escalating during the last decade. Using a large sample of durable good firms located in all major regions of the work, we extend two theoretical perspectives, namely the resource-based view and the transaction cost economics view of the firm, to better understand the issues behind global sourcing. Both theory extensions were supported in separate by statistically significant regression results. Then, pooling predictors to represent both models together, these measures independently increase the odds of predicting global sourcing. For example, building of a firm's technological capabilities that was captured through the levels of its …
Measuring Process Performance For Multiple Variables: Revisited, Donald Holmes, A. Erhan Mergen
Measuring Process Performance For Multiple Variables: Revisited, Donald Holmes, A. Erhan Mergen
Articles
The use of the algebraic values of the d_ij's in Eq. (1) does not give a true picture of the process quality level. This is due to the fact that when variables are negatively correlated, deviations of one variable in one direction tend to be compensated for in a sum by deviations of the other variable in the other direction (2). Thus we propose a revision to C_m which is discussed next.

Information Management (Im) Strategy: The Construct And Its Measurement, Bhanu Ragu-Nathan, T.S. Ragu-Nathan, Qiang Tu
Articles
The information system (IS) literature has consistently emphasized the need for a proper alignment of IS goals and strategies with organizational goals and strategies. A number of theoretical frameworks have been proposed to develop the linkages between IS and organizational strategies. However, while there has been much theorizing in the area, validated instruments for empirical testing of these theories have been scarce. This research reports on the development and validation of a set of operational measures for Information Management Strategy which is one of the components of the three-level framework for information system strategy proposed in the literature. The operational …

Achieving Mass Customization Through Modularity-Based Manufacturing Practices: A Customer-Driven Perspective, Qiang Tu, Mark Vonderembse, T. S. Ragu-Nathan, Bhanu Ragu-Nathan
Articles
As uncertainty in markets and technology intensifies, organizations are adopting modularity-based manufacturing practices to achieve mass customization and cope with demands for increasingly customized products. Modularity-standardization and substitution principle to product and process design to create modular components and processes that can be configured into a wide range of end products to meet specific customer needs. This study defines customer closeness and modularity-based manufacturing develops instruments to measure these factors, builds a framework that relates customer closeness, modularity-based manufacturing practices, and mass customization, and tests structural relationships in this framework using LISREL.

Professionalism, Oversight, And Institution-Balancing: The Supreme Court's "Second Best" Plan For Political Debate On Television, Lili Levi
Articles
Televised political debates have become a staple of modern elections. Proponents of open access to such debates argue that third party participation is a democratic necessity. They see as catastrophic the Supreme Court's decision in Arkansas Educational Television Commission v. Forbes, in which a state broadcaster was given the discretion to exclude a minor party candidate from a televised debate so long as the decision was viewpoint-neutral. This Article reads the Court's decision as a functional, "second best" solution that seeks to mediate the expressive and democratic values implicated in both open and closed access models. More generally, the …

The Entrepreneurial Aptitude Of Prison Inmates And The Potential Benefit Of Self-Employment Training Programs, Matthew Sonfield, Robert Lussier, Robert Barbato
The Entrepreneurial Aptitude Of Prison Inmates And The Potential Benefit Of Self-Employment Training Programs, Matthew Sonfield, Robert Lussier, Robert Barbato
Articles
Using newly collected data, and building upon previous research, this study compared a sample of prison inmates with various other entrepreneurial and non-entrepreneurial groups with regard to entrepreneurial aptitude, as measured by the Miner MSCS-T test. Results show inmates scoring higher than "normative" entrepreneurs, "slow-growth" entrepreneurs and "manager-scentists," but lower than "high-growth" entrepreneurs. Also, inmates score the same regardless of type of crime, first-time versus repeat conviction, or enrollment or not in small business/self-employment training programs. The implications of these findings, including the potential benefits of post-prison self-employment and of training programs for inmates, are discussed.

The late 1990's have seen the emergence of the individual investor. The most celebrated fact associated with this phenomenon may be the increasing use of online investing by individual investors. The rapid emergence of online brokerages, with their increasing market values relative to full service brokerages, is testament to this revolution. Coinciding with this revolution is an increased demand for investment information by individual investors. Both the financial information industry and the broadcasting industry have tried to meet this demand. Numberous Internet sits, such as Yahoo and WSRN, provided basic financial information. Other Internet sites, such as Vcall, provide live …
The Strategic Response Of Dublin's Traditional Department Stores To Intensifying Competition, Edmund O'Callaghan, Mary Wilcox
The Strategic Response Of Dublin's Traditional Department Stores To Intensifying Competition, Edmund O'Callaghan, Mary Wilcox
Articles
In Dublin city competition within the retail sector is intensifying and city-centre department stores, in common with other traders, face many challenges. Indigenous retailers must contend not only with each other, but also with an on-going invasion of international retailers who have been attracted by Ireland’s booming economy. UK multiples have made major in-roads into Dublin's retail scene and the city centre's latest shopping mall, The Jervis Centre, is so dominated by UK retailers that it has been christened 'Little Britain' In the past fifty years, many of Dublin's once dominant department stores have succumbed to the vagaries of retailing. …

Corporate Responses To Climate Change: The Role Of Internal Scientists As Institutional Entrepreneurs, Sandra Rothenberg, David Levy
Articles
In this paper, we argue that institutional discourses and practices do not pass undisturbed across organizational boundaries. We look at how corporate scientists in the automobile industry, acting as institutional entrepreneurs, influence way in which corporations perceive and respond to climate science.
The Move To Environmental Services: Understanding Environmental Strategy Through The Lens Of Cognitive Dissonance, Sandra Rothenberg, Stelios Zyglidopoulos
The Move To Environmental Services: Understanding Environmental Strategy Through The Lens Of Cognitive Dissonance, Sandra Rothenberg, Stelios Zyglidopoulos
Articles
In this paper, we use the concept of cognitive dissonance to understand how firms balance cognition and behavior within the framework of their environmental strategies. By understanding the paths for dissonance reduction, the motives for choosing one path over another, and the factors influencing the chouce of a particular path by a business firm, we develop propositions regarding how firms make strategic choices with regard to environmental behavior.

Marriage is a public status grounded on an intimate relationship. Those who emphasize the public status aspect have argued that the state, and the state alone, should set the terms for the marriage (including rules for entry, rules during the marriage, and the terms on which the marriage can be dissolved). Those who emphasize the intimate relationship aspect have been more receptive to the parties’ private ordering of the terms of their marriage.

From Raw Materials To Customers: Supply Chain Management In The Service Industry, Jack Cook, Kathy Debree, Amie Feroleto
Articles
No company can operate without a supply chain. recent years have seen change in the way many companies manage their supply chains - holistically rather than as a series of separate pieces. Manufacturers have taken the lead in improving supply chain management, but now the fast-growing service industry is adopting these principles. A study in the health care area illustrates fast-growing service industry is adopting these principles. A study in the health care area illustrates how service businesses can benefit from the decreased lead times, faster product development, higher quality, and reduced costs that can accompany successful supply chain management.
A Study Of The Association Between Beta And Nonpension Postretirement Benefit Disclosures, Wayne Nix, Khondkar Karim
A Study Of The Association Between Beta And Nonpension Postretirement Benefit Disclosures, Wayne Nix, Khondkar Karim
Articles
The objective of this study is to examine the association between nonpension postretirement benefits (NPPRB) liability and systematic risk (beta) during the period of 1989 through 1991. This study has identified a sample of Statement of Financial Standards (SFAS) 106 adopters who were required to disclose the estimated NPPRB liability no later than calendar year 1993. Beta is modeled as a function of unlevered beta, debt, the NPPRB liability and equity. We find that investors recognized the NPPRB liability prior to 1992 and used this information in the assessment of systematic risk.

The Cref Stock Fund Is Earning 50: How Well Has The First Equity Variable Served Investors?, Eugene Fram, Chun-Keung Hoi
Articles
The College Retirement Equities Fund (CREF) will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2002. It was the first variable annuity to focus its investments on common stock equalities, designed to help investors overcome problems of inflation. A study of it history show: When used in combination with a traditional annuity, such as TIAA, CREF has been an effective vehible for developing additional retirement dollars at a reasonable risk level. Being evenly invested in TIAA and CREF over a 25 to 35 year working lifetime, one can expect the CREF account to have 10% to 30% more assets at the data of …

Federal Regulation Of Isolated Wetlands After Swancc, Stephen M. Johnson
Articles
This past January the U.S. Supreme Court held that the Clean Water Act (CWA) did not authorize the federal government to prohibit a landfill operator from filling isolated ponds on its property merely because the ponds were used as habitat by migratory birds. The National Association of Home Builders claimed that the decision in Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County v. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (SWANCC) was "a major legal victory for home builders and other private property owners." Critics of the SWANCC decision argued that it jeopardizes "perhaps a fifth of the water bodies in the United …

Zr-Containing 4,4'-Oda/Pmda Polyimide Composites Parts I And Ii, Marvin Illingsworth, J. Betancourt, Liling He
Articles
The objective of this research is to improve the atomic oxygen resistance of KaptonTM, a polyimide (PI) made from pyromellitic acid dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA), while retaining or enhancing the desirable properties of the pure polymer. Toward this end, zirconium-containing complexes and polymers were used to make composites and blends. Tetra(acetylacetonato)zirconium(IV), Zr(acac)4, which is commercially available, was identified as the best zirconium-containing complex for enhancing the atomic oxygen resistance of polyimide composites of the 10 complexes screened. Films prepared from the commercially-available polyamic acid (PAA) of PMDA-ODA (DuPont) have good uniformity, flexibility, and tensile strength. A 24-layer 10% (mol) …
