Modeling Redistribution Of Nanozeolites In Holographic Recording, Dana Mackey, Jack Lyons Dr, Izabela Naydenova Jun 2024

Modeling Redistribution Of Nanozeolites In Holographic Recording, Dana Mackey, Jack Lyons Dr, Izabela Naydenova

Articles

Zeolite doped photopolymers have been studied experimentally due to their potential application in the develop- ment of optical sensors. It has been shown that dopant redistribution can be achieved by holographic recording and has a direct influence on the sensitivity of the recorded grating. To achieve better theoretical understanding of these processes, this paper proposes an extended photopolymerization-diffusion mathematical model for describing the dynamics of nanozeolite redistribution during recording in an acrylamide-based photopolymer. Using numerical simulations of this model, we investigate how recording conditions, dopant transport parameters, and initial load affect the refractive index modulation of the resulting photonic structure.

Holographic Multiplexing In A Photopolymerisable Hybrid Sol-Gel, Pamela Stoeva, Tatsiana Mikulchyk, Izabela Naydenova, Kevin Murphy May 2024

Holographic Multiplexing In A Photopolymerisable Hybrid Sol-Gel, Pamela Stoeva, Tatsiana Mikulchyk, Izabela Naydenova, Kevin Murphy

Articles

Holographic multiplexing techniques enhance functionality and information storage by leveraging the inherent selectivity of holograms. This is crucial for advancing holographic sensors, which excel in simultaneously detecting multiple parameters from a single input signal. This study explores the potential of the recent photopolymerisable hybrid sol-gel (PHSG) material for application in Space sensing systems through the investigation of its holographic angular multiplexing capabilities. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, we report the successful recording of up to five angularly multiplexed gratings with diffraction efficiencies (DE) ≥ 15% in 187 ± 18 µm PHSG layers. A 3 mW/cm2 …

Beyond The Human: Crossovers For An Onto-Epistemological Bifurcation, Ester Toribio-Roura May 2024

Beyond The Human: Crossovers For An Onto-Epistemological Bifurcation, Ester Toribio-Roura

Articles

Building upon recent studies in new materialisms and feminist critical posthumanism with a focus on human and more-than-human relationships, this paper examines how the posthuman paradigm, by postulating the queering of identit(ies) via entanglement with the more-than-human (including technology), and by offering a critical examination of diverse modes of existence within a broader ecological context, can foster more inclusive and ethically sound ways of being in the world. Although posthumanism encompasses a wide range of perspectives and theories, including transhumanism, at its core, it challenges traditional notions of humanism, blurring the boundaries between what is human and what is more-than-human, …

A Central Limit Theorem For The Number Of Excursion Set Components Of Gaussian Fields, Dmitry Beliaev, Michael Mcauley, Stephen Muirhead May 2024

A Central Limit Theorem For The Number Of Excursion Set Components Of Gaussian Fields, Dmitry Beliaev, Michael Mcauley, Stephen Muirhead

Articles

For a smooth stationary Gaussian field f on Rd and level ℓ ∈ R, we consider the number of connected components of the excursion set {f ≥ ℓ} (or level set {f = ℓ}) contained in large domains. The mean of this quantity is known to scale like the volume of the domain under general assumptions on the field. We prove that, assuming sufficient decay of correlations (e.g. the Bargmann-Fock field), a central limit theorem holds with volume-order scaling. Previously such a result had only been established for ‘additive’ geometric functionals of the excursion/level sets (e.g. the volume or …

Rethinking Taxing Excess Profits, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Tamir Shanan Apr 2024

Rethinking Taxing Excess Profits, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Tamir Shanan

Articles

This article discusses the application of excess profit taxes (EPTs, also referred to as windfall taxes) that have gained renewed interest and popularity over the past several years. The revival of these windfall taxes gained renewed interest following the COVID-19 outbreak, which led to a sharp price increase in corporate revenues of medical equipment and within pharmaceutical industries. However, the revival of such taxes was also used following the recent rise in energy prices mainly in Europe, leading to a sharp increase in corporate revenues of energy corporations and the recent surge in borrowing interest rates that was not accompanied …

Rule 11 Is No Match For Generative Al, Jessica Gunder Apr 2024

Rule 11 Is No Match For Generative Al, Jessica Gunder

Articles

In a series of high-profile ethics debacles, attorneys who used generative Al technology found themselves in hot water after they negligently relied on fictitious cases and false statements of law crafted by the technology. These attorneys mistakenly relied upon the output they received from a generative Al product without verifying and validating that output. Their embarrassing ethical breaches made national news, and spurred judges to implement standing orders that require attorneys to disclose their use of Al technology. Scholars were quick to criticize these standing orders' and the standing orders are rife with problems. But are they needed? Or are …

Comparing Anova And Powershap Feature Selection Methods Via Shapley Additive Explanations Of Models Of Mental Workload Built With The Theta And Alpha Eeg Band Ratios, Bujar Raufi, Luca Longo Mar 2024

Comparing Anova And Powershap Feature Selection Methods Via Shapley Additive Explanations Of Models Of Mental Workload Built With The Theta And Alpha Eeg Band Ratios, Bujar Raufi, Luca Longo

Articles

Background: Creating models to differentiate self-reported mental workload perceptions is challenging and requires machine learning to identify features from EEG signals. EEG band ratios quantify human activity, but limited research on mental workload assessment exists. This study evaluates the use of theta-to-alpha and alpha-to-theta EEG band ratio features to distinguish human self-reported perceptions of mental workload. Methods: In this study, EEG data from 48 participants were analyzed while engaged in resting and task-intensive activities. Multiple mental workload indices were developed using different EEG channel clusters and band ratios. ANOVA’s F-score and PowerSHAP were used to extract the statistical features. At …

Spectralomics – Towards A Holistic Adaptation Of Label Free Spectroscopy, Hugh Byrne Mar 2024

Spectralomics – Towards A Holistic Adaptation Of Label Free Spectroscopy, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Vibrational spectroscopy, largely based on infrared absorption and Raman scattering techniques, is much vaunted as a label free approach, delivering a high content, holistic characterisation of a sample, with demonstrable applications in a broad range of fields, from process analytical technologies and preclinical drug screening, to disease diagnostics, therapeutics, prognostics and personalised medicine. However, in the analysis of such complex systems, a trend has emerged in which spectral analysis is reduced to the identification of individual peaks, based on reference tables of assignments derived from literature, which are then interpreted as biomarkers. More sophisticated analysis attempts to unmix the spectrum …

Feedback Loops: Going Negative, Patrick Barry Mar 2024

Feedback Loops: Going Negative, Patrick Barry

Articles

Aelet Fishbach is a professor at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business who has studied how people seek out and process negative feedback. One of the ways she has done this is through a classroom exercise in which she divides the students into two groups: feedback givers and feedback receivers. The givers are told to pair up with a receiver and communicate the following feedback in a one-on-one setting: The person's performance s unsatisfactory; improvement is needed; and there are concrete ways they can get on the right track.

Modelling Hoe Performance With An Extended Source; Experimental Investigation Using Misaligned Point Sources, Jorge Lasarte, Kevin Murphy, Izabela Naydenova, Maria Victoria Collados, Jesús Atencia, Suzanne Martin

Articles

Holographic optical elements (HOEs) have the potential to enable more compact, versatile, and lightweight optical designs, but many challenges remain. Volume HOEs have the advantage of high diffraction efficiency, but they present both chromatic selectivity and chromatic dispersion, which impact their use with wide spectrum light sources. Single-color light emitting diode (LED) sources have a narrow spectrum that reduces these issues and this makes them better suited for use with volume HOEs. However, the LED source size must be taken into consideration for compact volume HOE-LED systems. To investigate the design limits for compact HOE-LED systems, a theoretical and experimental …

Kinetic Modelling Of The Cellular Metabolic Responses Underpinning In Vitro Glycolysis Assays, Nitin Patil, Zohreh Mirveis, Hugh Byrne Jan 2024

Kinetic Modelling Of The Cellular Metabolic Responses Underpinning In Vitro Glycolysis Assays, Nitin Patil, Zohreh Mirveis, Hugh Byrne

Articles

This study aims to demonstrate the benefits of augmenting commercially available, real-time, in vitro glycolysis assays with phenomenological rate equation-based kinetic models, describing the contributions of the underpinning metabolic pathways. To this end, a commercially available glycolysis assay, sensitive to changes in extracellular acidification (extracellular pH), was used to derive the glycolysis pathway kinetics. The pathway was numerically modelled using a series of ordinary differential rate equations, to simulate the obtained experimental results. The sensitivity of the model to the key equation parameters was also explored. The cellular glycolysis pathway kinetics were determined for three different cell-lines, under nonmodulated and …

Explainable Ai For 6g Use Cases: Technical Aspects And Research Challenges, Shen Wang, M. Atif Qureshi, Luis Miralles-Pechu{\'A}N, Thien Huynh-The, Thippa Reddy Gadekallu, Madhusanka Liyanage Jan 2024

Explainable Ai For 6g Use Cases: Technical Aspects And Research Challenges, Shen Wang, M. Atif Qureshi, Luis Miralles-Pechu{\'A}N, Thien Huynh-The, Thippa Reddy Gadekallu, Madhusanka Liyanage

Articles

Around 2020, 5G began its commercialization journey, and discussions about the next-generation networks (such as 6G) emerged. Researchers predict that 6G networks will have higher bandwidth, coverage, reliability, energy efficiency, and lower latency, and will be an integrated “human-centric” network system powered by artificial intelligence (AI). This 6G network will lead to many real-time automated decisions, ranging from network resource allocation to collision avoidance for self-driving cars. However, there is a risk of losing control over decision-making due to the high-speed, data-intensive AI decision-making that may go beyond designers’ and users’ comprehension. To mitigate this risk, explainable AI (XAI) methods …

Numeracy-Meets: Supporting The Teaching Of Numeracy To Vulnerable Adult Groups, Fiona Faulkner, Mark Prendergast, Niamh O'Meara, Kathy O'Sullivan, Annette Forster Jan 2024

Numeracy-Meets: Supporting The Teaching Of Numeracy To Vulnerable Adult Groups, Fiona Faulkner, Mark Prendergast, Niamh O'Meara, Kathy O'Sullivan, Annette Forster

Articles

A key commitment of the Adult Literacy for Life Strategy (2021) is to reduce the number of adults in Ireland with unmet numeracy needs from 25% to 12%. One of the main challenges in achieving this is the varied provision of adult numeracy education. Many numeracy practitioners are either employed part time or are volunteers with few opportunities for professional development and networking with their peers. This paper details the design, implementation, and evaluation of a professional development model that aimed to support adult practitioners’ in developing their learners’ numeracy skills. This was done through the development of a new …

Standing And Probabilistic Injury, Curtis Bradley, Ernest Young Jan 2024

Standing And Probabilistic Injury, Curtis Bradley, Ernest Young

Articles

Standing to sue often turns on questions of probability. For example, public law plaintiffs must show that they are likely to be affected by allegedly unlawful government surveillance or environmental policies, and consumers may wish to sue private defendants over false credit reporting or data breaches that may or may not cause them financial or reputational harm in the future. This Article offers a framework for resolving a wide range of these “probabilistic standing” issues. Our core claim is that courts and commentators ask too much of standing doctrine in probabilistic cases. First, scholars sometimes seek a unified theory of …

The Three-Verdict Problem, Jack Whiteley Jan 2024

The Three-Verdict Problem, Jack Whiteley

Articles

!n Scotland, for hundreds of years, juries have chosen between three criminal verdicts: “guilty,” “not guilty,” and “not proven.” The “not proven” verdict’s legal meaning remains mysterious. In this article, I aim to describe and solve the problem. Applying modern ideas about standards of proof to the intellectual history of “not proven” yields eight plausible meanings for the verdict. With the extent of the problem in mind, I offer a solution. In the three-verdict system, jurors should deliver a “guilty” verdict when they believe that the accused has committed the crime and a “not guilty” verdict when they believe that …

The Natural Law Origins Of Private And Public Law, Richard Epstein Jan 2024

The Natural Law Origins Of Private And Public Law, Richard Epstein

Articles

This article attempts to counter the widespread skepticism that surrounds any appeal to natural law principles, starting with Roman law at one end and the appeal to general law under Swift v. Tyson on the other. It steers a systematic middle course between moral absolutism, which treats all relationships as fixed and immutable, and modern realist positions that insist the infinite variety of legal approaches to most legal problems proves that there is no solid core to either natural law or general law. The natural law positions set out the basic relationships for marriage and family, for alluvion and avulsion …

Machine-Learning Human Rights, Han-Wei Ho, Patrick Chung-Chia, Nuno Garoupa, Martin Wells, Yun-Chien Chang, Tom Ginsburg

Articles

Utilizing a comprehensive panel dataset spanning from 1900 to 2020, this study introduces an innovative methodology for the analysis and categorization of legal documents, specifically national constitutions. Contrary to the predominant reliance on unsupervised methods within the field, this research incorporates a supervised machine-learning approach, notably the SEMMS method, alongside traditional unsupervised algorithms. This dual approach facilitates a nuanced analysis of the human rights provisions contained within national constitutions, resulting in the identification of both traditional and novel constitutional groupings. Broadly speaking, the more traditional common law-civil law divide does not seem particularly relevant in this context. Furthermore, our methodology …

Untangling Unreliable Citations, Margie Alsbrook Jan 2024

Untangling Unreliable Citations, Margie Alsbrook

Articles

Citations are the vernacular that the legal profession uses to communicate the precedents that underline our arguments and analysis. They are the building blocks of legal communications and legal arguments, and lawyers and judges need to be able to rely upon the accuracy of each other’s citations to work in a stabilized democracy. Democratic stability is in jeopardy due to an erosion of norms from a variety of well-documented sources, most of which are well beyond the control of the average lawyer. But lawyers and judges can control the reliability of the authority we use in our own work product, …

Experimental And Computational Investigation Of The Kinetic Evolution Of The Glutaminolysis Pathway And Its Interplay With The Glycolysis Pathway, Zohreh Mirveis, Nitin Patil, Hugh J. Byrne Jan 2024

Experimental And Computational Investigation Of The Kinetic Evolution Of The Glutaminolysis Pathway And Its Interplay With The Glycolysis Pathway, Zohreh Mirveis, Nitin Patil, Hugh J. Byrne

Articles

Exploring cellular responses necessitates studying real-time metabolic pathway kinetics, considering the adaptable nature of cells. Glycolysis and glutaminolysis are interconnected pathways fundamental to driving cellular metabolism, generating both energy and essential biosynthetic molecules. While prior studies explored glycolysis tracking, this research focuses on monitoring the kinetics of the glutaminolysis pathway by evaluating the effect of glutamine availability on glycolytic kinetics and by investigating the impact of a stimulator (oligomycin) and inhibitor (2DG) on the glycolytic flux in the presence of glutamine. Additionally, we adapted a rate equation model to provide improved understanding of the pathway kinetics. The experimental and simulated …

Systematic Regulation Of Artificial Intelligence, Yonathan Arbel, Matthew Tokson, Albert Lin Jan 2024

Systematic Regulation Of Artificial Intelligence, Yonathan Arbel, Matthew Tokson, Albert Lin

Articles

Today's artificial intelligence ("AI'') systems exhibit increasing capabilities across a remarkable variety of tasks. The rapid growth in AI ability has caught the attention of policymakers, parliaments, and the United Nations. These entities are increasingly looking towards regulating AI, not only in its particular applications, but as a technology. Yet legal scholarship has thus far offered little to this new and critical regulatory conversation, which has instead been dominated by computer scientists and technologists.

This Article begins the project of assessing AI 's broader risks and law 's role in addressing them. These risks are wide ranging-they span harms to …

Locating Liability For Medical Ai, W. Nicholson Price Ii, I. Glenn Cohen Jan 2024

Locating Liability For Medical Ai, W. Nicholson Price Ii, I. Glenn Cohen

Articles

When medical AI systems fail, who should be responsible, and how? We argue that various features of medical AI complicate the application of existing tort doctrines and render them ineffective at creating incentives for the safe and effective use of medical AI. In addition to complexity and opacity, the problem of contextual bias, where medical AI systems vary substantially in performance from place to place, hampers traditional doctrines. We suggest instead the application of enterprise liability to hospitals—making them broadly liable for negligent injuries occurring within the hospital system—with an important caveat: hospitals must have access to the information needed …

Generalised Zero-Shot Learning For Action Recognition Fusing Text And Image Gans, Kaiqiang Huang, Susan Mckeever, Luis Miralles-Pechuán Jan 2024

Generalised Zero-Shot Learning For Action Recognition Fusing Text And Image Gans, Kaiqiang Huang, Susan Mckeever, Luis Miralles-Pechuán

Articles

Generalized Zero-Shot Action Recognition (GZSAR) is geared towards recognizing classes that the model has not been trained on, while still maintaining robust performance on the familiar, trained classes. This approach mitigates the need for an extensive amount of labeled training data and enhances the efficient utilization of available datasets. The main contribution of this paper is a novel approach for GZSAR that combines the power of two Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). One GAN is responsible for generating embeddings from visual representations, while the other GAN focuses on generating embeddings from textual representations. These generated embeddings are fused, with the selection …

Neural Correlates Of Audiovisual Narrative Speech Perception In Children And Adults On The Autism Spectrum: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study, Lars A. Ross, Sophie Molholm, John S. Butler, Victor A. Del Bene, Tufikameni Brima, John J. Foxe Jan 2024

Neural Correlates Of Audiovisual Narrative Speech Perception In Children And Adults On The Autism Spectrum: A Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Study, Lars A. Ross, Sophie Molholm, John S. Butler, Victor A. Del Bene, Tufikameni Brima, John J. Foxe

Articles

Autistic individuals show substantially reduced benefit from observing visual articulations during audiovisual speech perception, a multisensory integration deficit that is particularly relevant to social communication. This has mostly been studied using simple syllabic or word-level stimuli and it remains unclear how altered lower-level multisensory integration translates to the processing of more complex natural multisensory stimulus environments in autism. Here, functional neuroimaging was used to examine neural correlates of audiovisual gain (AV-gain) in 41 autistic individuals to those of 41 age-matched non-autistic controls when presented with a complex audiovisual narrative. Participants were presented with continuous narration of a story in auditory-alone, …

Microfluidic Flowmeter Based On A Liquid Crystal-Filled Nested Capillary, Zhe Wang, Arun Kumar Mallik, Fangfang Wei, Zhuochen Wang, Anuradha Rout, Rayhan Habib Jibon, Qiang Wu, Yuliya Semenova, University College Cork Jan 2024

Microfluidic Flowmeter Based On A Liquid Crystal-Filled Nested Capillary, Zhe Wang, Arun Kumar Mallik, Fangfang Wei, Zhuochen Wang, Anuradha Rout, Rayhan Habib Jibon, Qiang Wu, Yuliya Semenova, University College Cork

Articles

Microfluidic flowmeters are a powerful and highly accurate tool, enabling precise monitoring and measurements of flows of gases and fluids in a range of applications. Here we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a whispering gallery modes flowmeter composed of a liquid crystal-filled nested capillary. Whispering gallery modes are excited by a tapered fiber coupled perpendicularly to the nested capillary. The air flowing through the capillary cools it down, which leads to a temperature-induced change of the refractive index of the nematic liquid crystals. This change in turn leads to a spectral shift of the whispering gallery modes resonances, which can be …

Murder On The Chapter 13 Express, David G. Carlson Jan 2024

Murder On The Chapter 13 Express, David G. Carlson

Articles

In Mortgage Corp. of the South v. Bozeman (2023), the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a confirmed chapter 13 plan was unworthy of res judicata respect. In so ruling, it held itself not bound by the Supreme Court’s super-finality opinion in United Student Aid Funds v. Espinosa. The Eleventh Circuit thought that it was preventing the chapter 13 plan from “murdering” the home mortgage. In reality, the plan was lawful and upheld payment in full of the mortgage. The debtor was actually trying to end the plan early before the mortgage was paid. The Bozeman court should have …

A Model Defense Of Due Process Balancing, Kyron J. Huigens Jan 2024

A Model Defense Of Due Process Balancing, Kyron J. Huigens

Articles

Judicial balancing has been subjected to a standard list of objections for decades, without anyone's offering a comprehensive and persuasive response. This Article fills that gap. Balancing is not embedded in an invidious instrumentalism, such as utilitarianism, that saps law of its moral salience; it does not depend on the quantification or commensuration of manifestly qualitative legal interests; it is not arbitrary, result-oriented, or mere opinion; it does not invade the province of the legislature; and--most importantly--it does not risk balancing constitutional rights away by treating them as mere interests.

The defense consists of a model. Models do not prove; …
