Discrete Analysis Of A Composite Video Signal, Frank F. Carden, William P. Osborne, Alton L. Gilbert Nov 1970

Discrete Analysis Of A Composite Video Signal, Frank F. Carden, William P. Osborne, Alton L. Gilbert

Articles

In this paper the problem of representing the composite video signal for monochromatic T. V. transmission is examined and a method for computing the required spectral bandwidth is devised suitable for computer applications. The results obtained numerically are compared to measured results and to analytical solutions for a determinate signal for special cases. Comparison is made with some "maximum horizontal resolution" methods with a resulting decrease in bandwidth requirements for most applications.

Scholarship On Soviet Family Law In Perspective, Whitmore Gray Jan 1970

Scholarship On Soviet Family Law In Perspective, Whitmore Gray

Articles

The radical changes in the norms of Soviet family law over the past fifty years have reflected the convulsions of Soviet society as well as the revisions of Marxism-Leninism-Stalinism. This paper is a commentary on the writing in this field by Americans in particular, and by other non-Soviets in general. In view of the volume of writing in this field, it has been necessary to limit discussion in the text to a few representative articles illustrating a few of the subject matters treated and various typical approaches employed. The topic is a particularly timely one, for new, comprehensive Principles of …

The Virtues Of Nonsimulation Games, Layman E. Allen, Robert W. Allen, Joan Ross Jan 1970

The Virtues Of Nonsimulation Games, Layman E. Allen, Robert W. Allen, Joan Ross

Articles

The use of games as teaching devices is receiving attention from an increasing number of educators. Data from tests conducted with one such educational game-WFF ’N PROOF strongly indicate that this and similar games are useful, not only in teaching a particular subject (in this case symbolic logic), but also in increasing the general problem-solving ability of the student. WFF ’N PROOF is actually not one game but a series of 21 games of increasing difficulty. The first games in the series are quite simple and can be enjoyed by first graders. The final games are challenging and stimulating even …

Short Pulse Response Of Radar Targets, C. Leonard Bennett, Joseph Delorenzo Jan 1969

Short Pulse Response Of Radar Targets, C. Leonard Bennett, Joseph Delorenzo

Articles

The current interest in high resolution radar for the identification of targets has stimulated interest in the investigation of scattered waveforms that result when a short pulse (i.e., an approximate electromagnetic impulse) illuminates the target. From the resulting pulse response, the response due to other incident waveform shapes can be calculated by a convolution operation. In this paper a technique for measuring the imate electromagnetic impulse) illuminates the target. From the form shapes can be calculated by a convolution operation. In this paper a technique for measuring the electromagnetic pulse response is presented and the results are compared with exact …

Better Organization Of Legal Knowledge, Layman E. Allen, Tomoyuki Ohta Jan 1969

Better Organization Of Legal Knowledge, Layman E. Allen, Tomoyuki Ohta

Articles

The increasing need of legislatures to draft complicated statutes, e.g., the Internal Revenue Code, requires the development of new techniques for defining and communicating complicated policies both accurately and understandably. At present, these complicated statutes are expressed in long, convoluted sentences with frequent uses of exceptions and limitations. Current drafting technique, with its inadequacies, often hinders a comprehensive understanding of the policy being communicated and often fails to communicate the policy accurately. Moreover, with the voluminous increase of legal literature in recent times, legal researchers experience increasing difficulty in attempting to retrieve relevant judicial and administrative interpretations. The authors propose …

Federal Estate Tax Burden Borne By A Dissenting Widow, Douglas A. Kahn Jan 1966

Federal Estate Tax Burden Borne By A Dissenting Widow, Douglas A. Kahn

Articles

Renunciation of her deceased husband's will entitles a widow to a specified percentage of the husband's net estate (or a dower interest) in lieu of any benefits she would otherwise have received under the will. The size of the dissenting widow's share differs among the several states, but the normal range is from one third to one half of her husband's net estate. In some jurisdictions the widow's share is determined, in whole or in part, according to the portion to which she would be entitled if her husband had died intestate, but in these jurisdictions the widow's share generally …

Real-Time Measurement And Correction Of Phase Distortion In High-Fidelity Radars, Joseph Delorenzo, D. Deangelis, P. Rademachev Jan 1963

Real-Time Measurement And Correction Of Phase Distortion In High-Fidelity Radars, Joseph Delorenzo, D. Deangelis, P. Rademachev

Articles

Phase distortion gives rise to variations in the radar ambiguity function, which in many cases, degrades the resolution capability of the system. This paper briefly describes the characteristics of the common forms of distortion in practical systems and deals with the analytical and experimental results of phase measurements using a correlation type phase error detector. The relationship of this device to active correlators and ambiguity function plotters will be described. A discussion of real-time correction of phase distortion with experimental results is also included.

Nonpopulation Factors Relevant To An Acceptable Standard For Apportionment, Jerold H. Israel Jan 1963

Nonpopulation Factors Relevant To An Acceptable Standard For Apportionment, Jerold H. Israel

Articles

Of the many problems left unanswered in Baker v. Carr,' the one that has received the most attention both from lower courts and commentators is that of prescribing a specific standard for determining what constitutes a denial of "equal protection" in legislative apportionment.2 The starting point universally accepted - indeed, probably required by Baker - for attacking this problem is the definition of apportionment equality in terms of mathematical measurement of the individual's "voting power."3 Perfect equality in apportionment is viewed as requiring that each election district contain an equal population, so that every individual's vote in his district will …

On Charting A Course Through The Mathematical Quagmire: The Future Of Baker V. Carr, Jerold H. Israel

Articles

The Tennessee reapportionment decision, Baker v. Carr,' has been popularly characterized as one of the "very few judicial decisions which have fundamentally reshaped our constitutional system."'2 Newspaper and magazine commentators generally have predicted that the decision of last March is likely to "change the course of our history" by producing a drastic alteration in the balance of power on the state political scene.3 While this end may be desirable,4 any such estimate of the future impact of the Baker decision, at least insofar as its legal consequence is concerned,5 seems not only premature but somewhat exaggerated. The future significance of …

Symbolic Logic: A Razor-Edged Tool For Drafting And Interpreting Legal Documents, Layman E. Allen Jan 1957

Symbolic Logic: A Razor-Edged Tool For Drafting And Interpreting Legal Documents, Layman E. Allen

Articles

A large amount of the litigation based on written instruments-whether statute, contract, will, conveyance or regulation-can be traced to the draftsman's failure to convey his meaning clearly. Frequently, of course, certain items may purposely be left ambiguous, but often the question in issue is due to an inadvertent ambiguity that could have been avoided had the draftsman clearly expressed what he intended to say. In this Article it is suggested that a new approach to drafting, using certain elementary notions of symbolic logic, can go a long way towards eliminating such inadvertent ambiguity. This new approach makes available to draftsmen …
