The Embedded Epistemologist: Dispatches From The Legal Front, Susan Haack
The Embedded Epistemologist: Dispatches From The Legal Front, Susan Haack

In ordinary circumstances, we can assess the worth of evidence well enough without benefit of any theory; but when evidence is especially complex, ambiguous, or emotionally disturbing-as it often is in legal contexts-epistemological theory may be helpful. A legal fact-finder is asked to determine whether the proposition that the defendant is guilty, or is liable, is established to the required degree of proof by the [admissible] evidence presented; i.e., to make an epistemological appraisal. The foundherentist theory developed in Evidence and Inquiry can help us understand what this means; and reveals that degrees of proof cannot be construed as mathematical …

The primary objective of this research was to investigate the selection process used by consumers when choosing a restaurant to dine. This study examined literature on consumer behavior, restaurant selection, and decision-making, underpinning the contention that service quality is linked to the consumer’s selection of a restaurant. It supports the utility theories that consumers buy bundles of attributes that simultaneously combined represent a certain level of service quality at a certain price. The findings of the research displayed a preference by Dublin consumers for Italian and Chinese styled restaurants and identified quality of the food, type of food, cleanliness of …

Since 2010, two significant international regulations regarding medical device development have come into force, the amendment to the European Union (EU) Medical Device Directive (MDD) 2007/47/EC and the United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Final rule on Medical Device Data Systems (MDDS). Adherence to these regulations is mandatory to be able to market a medical device in the respective region. The ability to understand these regulations and apply them to a development project can be difficult. The MDDS final rule changes the safety classification of a number of devices from Class III-high risk to Class I-low risk. The …
Hadamard Renormalization Of The Stress Energy Tensor In A Spherically Symmetric Black Hole Space-Time With An Application To Lukewarm Black Holes, Cormac Breen, Adrian Ottewill
Hadamard Renormalization Of The Stress Energy Tensor In A Spherically Symmetric Black Hole Space-Time With An Application To Lukewarm Black Holes, Cormac Breen, Adrian Ottewill
Articles
We consider a quantum field which is in a Hartle-Hawking state propagating in a spherically symmetric black hole space-time. We calculate the components of the stress tensor, renormalized using the Hadamard form of the Green's function, in the exterior region of this space-time. We then specialize these results to the case of the `lukewarm' Riessner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black hole.

This paper details a method of collecting video and audio recordings of people inter- acting with a simple robot interlocutor. The interaction is recorded via a number of cameras and microphones mounted on and around the robot. The system utilised a number of technologies to engage with interlocutors including OpenCV, Python, and Max MSP. Interactions over a three month period were collected at The Science Gallery in Trinity College Dublin. Visitors to the gallery freely engaged with the robot, with interactions on their behalf being spontaneous and non-scripted. The robot dialogue was a set pattern of utterances to engage interlocutors …
Stiefel And Grassmann Manifolds In Quantum Chemistry, Eduardo Chiumiento, Michael Melgaard
Stiefel And Grassmann Manifolds In Quantum Chemistry, Eduardo Chiumiento, Michael Melgaard
Articles
We establish geometric properties of Stiefel and Grassmann manifolds which arise in relation to Slatertype variational spaces in many-particle Hartree-Fock theory and beyond. In particular, we prove thatthey are analytic homogeneous spaces and submanifolds of the space of bounded operators on the single-particle Hilbert space. As a by-product we obtain that they are complete Finsler manifolds. These geometric properties underpin state-of-the-art results on existence of solutions to Hartree-Fock type equations.

Polyurethane foam has been in use for some time in wheelchair seating systems as it offers good pressure relieving capabilities in most cases. However, little characterisation work has gone into seating foam materials by comparison with conventional elastomeric materials. Accurate material models could allow better prediction of foam in-service behaviour, which could potentially improve seating design practises. The objective of this work was to develop an approach for the validation of hyperelastic and viscoelastic material model parameters used to simulate polyurethane foam behaviour. Material parameters were identified from relevant test procedures and implemented in a Finite Element simulation of an …

The biochemical and physical factors controlling protein expression level and solubility in vivo remain incompletely characterized. To gain insight into the primary sequence features influencing these outcomes, we performed statistical analyses of results from the high-throughput protein-production pipeline of the Northeast Structural Genomics Consortium. Proteins expressed in E. coli and consistently purified were scored independently for expression and solubility levels. These parameters nonetheless show a very strong positive correlation. We used logistic regressions to determine whether they are systematically influenced by fractional amino acid composition or several bulk sequence parameters including hydrophobicity, sidechain entropy, electrostatic charge, and predicted backbone disorder. …

The kinetics of the degradation of a homologous series of Poly phenylene vinylenes in which the phenylene units of the PPV structure are systematically substituted by naphthyl and anthyrl units is presented. Degradation is monitored according to the decay of the long wavelength absorption maximum upon illumination with UV radiation. Compared to Toluene solution, the photo-degradation is seen to be accelerated in Chloroform solution. All decays are fitted with first order kinetics. It is found that all substitutions improve the stability of the vinylene polymers against decay. In particular the highly electro-negative naphthyl group serves to drastically increase the stability …

Advancement of biomedical applications of carbonaceous nanomaterials is hampered by their biopersistence and proinflammatory action in vivo. Here, we used myeloperoxidase knockout B6.129X1-MPO (MPO k/o) mice and showed that oxidation and clearance of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) from the lungs of these animals after pharyngeal aspiration was markedly less effective whereas the inflammatory response was more robust than in wild-type C57Bl/6 mice. Our results provide direct evidence for the participation of MPO – one of the key-orchestrators of inflammatory response – in the in vivo pulmonary oxidative biodegradation of SWCNT and suggest new ways to control the biopersistence of …

Hadamard Renormalisation Of The Stress Energy Tensor On The Horizons Of A Spherically Symmetric Black Hole Space-Time, Cormac Breen, Adrian Ottewill

We consider a quantum field which is in a Hartle-Hawking state propagating in a general spherically symmetric black hole space-time. We make use of uniform approximations to the radial equation to calculate the components of the stress tensor, renormalized using the Hadamard form of the Green's function, on the horizons of this space-time. We then specialize these results to the case of the `lukewarm' Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter black hole and derive some conditions on the stress tensor for the regularity of the Hartle-Hawking state

The culinary process has changed somewhat down through the ages but not to any great extent. The raw materials are still similar but innovation and creativity has been applied to them to give the finished product varying degrees of taste, texture, sensory and aesthetic pleasure. Fundamentally the tools which we use to interpret or rate our food are the very same apparatus which animals use to define theirs. The anthropology of sensory perception is essentially the same for animals and man in an evolutionary perspective (Pasquet, Simmen & Pagezy, 2000). It reflects the capacity of the animal or primitive human …

Disciplinary Identity Of Nanoscience And Nanotechnology Research- A Study Of Postgraduate Researchers’ Experiences, Deepa Nathamuni Chari, Robert Howard, Brian Bowe
Articles
Nanoscience and Nanotechnology research although growing at very fast rate, its disciplinary identity remains ‘ill-defined’. It is often viewed as multidisciplinary; and/or interdisciplinary science or even as a unique discipline on its own way. As a consequence, whether this growing research area requires researchers that have studied specialised undergraduate or postgraduate nanoscience and nanotechnology programmes; or traditional science and engineering disciplines is still less understood. The examination of postgraduate researchers’ experiences of nanoscience and nanotechnology research can provide a way of understanding nanoscience and nanotechnology research and the associated forms of disciplinarity, which in turn can address what the type …

Members of DTC Research Group. Dublin Institute of Technology was commissioned in 2005 by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government in Ireland to assess the feasibility of utilising rainwater to replace treated mains water for nonpotable uses. The project involved the design, installation, commissioning and monitoring of rainwater harvesting on a farm. Two monitoring programmes, Regime 1 and Regime 2, examined the physicochemical and microbiological quality of the harvested rainwater. Samples were taken monthly and tested. Regime 1 analysis showed that the microbiological quality of the rainwater from the site did not comply with the requirements of the …

We consider an integrable hierarchy of nonlinear evolution equations (NLEE) related to linear bundle Lax operator L. The Lax representation is Z2 \times Z2 reduced and is naturally associated with the symmetric space SU(3)/S(U(1) \times U(2)). The simplest nontrivial equation in the hierarchy is a generalization of Heisenberg ferromagnetic model. We construct the N-soliton solutions for an arbitrary member of the hierarchy by using the Zakharov-Shabat dressing method with an appropriately chosen dressing factor. Two types of soliton solutions: quadruplet and doublet solitons are found. The one-soliton solutions of NLEEs with even and odd dispersion laws have different properties. In …

Optical Properties Of High Refractive Index Thin Films Processed At Low-Temperature, Mohamed Oubaha, Salem Elmaghrum, Robert Copperwhite, Brian Corcoran, Colette Mcdonagh, Arnaud Gorin
Articles
This study reports on the first development of high refractive index thin film materials processed at temperatures not greater than 100 degrees celsius. Three materials were synthesised by the sol–gel technique, each employing different transition metal precursors (niobium, tantalum and vanadium alkoxides). The optical properties of these materials were characterised by ellipsometry and the propagation losses at 638 nm were measured by the prism coupling method. It is shown that refractive indices as high as 1.870, 2.039 and 2.308 are obtained from niobium-, tantalum- and vanadium-based materials respectively, attributed to the influence of the transition metal atomic size on the …

A review of available literature on creativity was undertaken to determine the definition of creativity, the common traits displayed by those perceived as being creative and how those traits may possibly be nurtured. The word ‘creativity’ has been used by politicians as if it is tangible commodity that must be developed in time of economic recession. Indeed, Dublin City Enterprise Board, a local government authority are in the process of staging ‘Idea Generation’ workshops, “this workshop not only shows you what ideas are good ideas but also introduces you to the concepts of thinking laterally” (Dublin Regional Authority, 2011). The colonisation of clinical and industrial surfaces with microorganisms, including antibiotic-resistant strains, has promoted increased research into the development of effective antibacterial and antifouling coatings. This study describes the preparation of metal nitrate (Ag, Cu, Zn) doped methyltriethoxysilane (MTEOS) coatings and the rapid assessment of their antibacterial activity using polyproylene microtitre plates. Microtitre plate wells were coated with different volumes of liquid sol–gel and cured under various conditions. Curing parameters were analysed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and visual examination. The optimum curing conditions were determined to be 50–70C using a volume of 200ul. The coated wells were challenged with Gram-positive …

Characterising Domestic Electricity Consumption Patterns By Dwelling And Occupant Socio-Economic Variables: An Irish Case Study, Fintan Mcloughlin, Aidan Duffy, Michael Conlon
Articles
This paper examines the influence of dwelling and occupant characteristics on domestic electricity consumption patterns by analysing data obtained from a smart metering survey of a representative cross section of approximately 4,200 domestic Irish dwellings. A multiple linear regression model was applied to four parameters: total electricity consumption, maximum demand, load factor and time of use (ToU) of maximum electricity demand for a number of different dwelling and occupant socio-economic variables. In particular, dwelling type, number of bedrooms, head of household (HoH) age, household composition, social class, water heating and cooking type all had a significant influence over total domestic …

A Review Of Situation Identification Techniques In Pervasive Computing, Juan Ye, Simon Dobson, Susan Mckeever
Articles
Pervasive systems must offer an open, extensible, and evolving portfolio of services which integrate sensor data from a diverse range of sources. The core challenge is to provide appropriate and consistent adaptive behaviours for these services in the face of huge volumes of sensor data exhibiting varying degrees of precision, accuracy and dynamism. Situation identification is an enabling technology that resolves noisy sensor data and abstracts it into higher-level concepts that are interesting to applications. We provide a comprehensive analysis of the nature and characteristics of situations, discuss the complexities of situation identification, and review the techniques that are most …

Review Of Ultrasound Elastography Quality Control And Training Test Phantoms, S. Cournane, Andrew Fagan, Jacinta Browne
Articles
While the rapid development of ultrasound elastography techniques in recent decades has sparked its prompt implementation in the clinical setting adding new diagnostic information to conventional imaging techniques, questions still remain as to its full potential and efficacy in the hospital environment. A limited number of technical studies have objectively assessed the full capabilities of the different elastography approaches, perhaps due, in part, to the scarcity of suitable tissue-mimicking materials and appropriately designed phantoms available. Few commercially-available elastography phantoms possess the necessary test target characteristics or mechanical properties observed clinically, or indeed reflect the lesion-to-background elasticity ratio encountered during clinical …

Assessment Of An Osteoblast-Like Cell Line As A Model For Human Primary Osteoblasts Using Raman Spectroscopy, Lindsay Mcmanus, Franck Bonnier, George Burke, Brian Meenan, Adrian Boyd, Hugh Byrne
Articles
Raman spectroscopy is employed to determine the suitability of the U20S osteoblast-like cell line for use as a model for human primary osteoblasts, with emphasis on the ability of these cell types to replicate their tissue of origin. It was found that both cell types demonstrated early stage mineral deposition that followed significantly different growth patterns. Analysis of the growth pattern and spectral data from primary cells revealed increasing bone quality ratios and a high crystallinity, consistent with previous reports. Conversely the investigation of the U20S osteoblast-like cell line provided evidence of dense multilayered mineralised regions that corresponded more closely …

Existence Of A Minimizer For The Quasi-Relativistic Kohn-Sham Model, Carlos Argáez García, Michael Melgaard
Articles
We study the standard and extended Kohn-Sham models for quasi-relativistic N-electron Coulomb systems; that is, systems where the kinetic energy of the electrons is given by the quasi-relativistic operator (see article) . For spin-unpolarized systems in the local density approximation, we prove existence of a ground state (or minimizer) provided that the total charge Z of K nuclei is greater than N-1 and that Z is smaller than a critical charge (see article).

Photonic Crystal Fiber Interferometer For Dew Detection, Jinesh Mathew, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell
Photonic Crystal Fiber Interferometer For Dew Detection, Jinesh Mathew, Yuliya Semenova, Gerald Farrell
Articles
A novel method for dew detection based on photonic crystal fiber (PCF) interferometer that operates in reflection mode is presented in this paper. The fabrication of the sensor head is simple since it only involves cleaving and fusion splicing. The sensor shows good sensitivity to dew formation with a large wavelength peak shift of the interference pattern at the onset of dew formation. The device’s response to ambient humidity and temperature are also studied and reported in this paper. From our experiment it is also concluded that by attaching a thermoelectric cooler with temperature feedback, the sensor head demonstrated can …

We demonstrate a technology platform that enables the development of new, surface-sensitised organic transistor sensors. We show that an organic semiconductor can still be gated by an electric double layer within the electrochemical window of water after the deposition of up to four Langmuir- Schäfer calixarene layers onto its surface. Since many calixarenes are known to selectively bind waterborne cations, this facilitates sensitising a conventional organic semiconductor with a physically deposited layer for specific cation recognition. When at least two Langmuir-Schäfer layers are deposited, these also block the electrochemical doping of the organic semiconductor, which otherwise competes with the field …

Second Gradient Viscoelastic Fluids: Dissipation Principle And Free Energies, G. Amendola, M. Fabrizio, John Murrough Golden
Articles
We consider a generalization of the constitutive equation for an incompressible second order fluid, by including thermal and viscoelastic effects in the expression for the stress tensor. The presence of the histories of the strain rate tensor and its gradient yields a non-simple material, for which the laws of thermodynamics assume a modified form. These laws are expressed in terms of the internal mechanical power which is evaluated, using the dynamical equation for the fluid. Generalized thermodynamic constraints on the constitutive equation are presented. The required properties of free energy functionals are discussed. In particular, it is shown that they …

On Super And Hereditarily Hopfian And Co-Hopfian Abelian Groups, Brendan Goldsmith, Katao Kong
Articles
The notions of Hopfian and co-Hopfian groups have been of interest for some time. In this present work we characterize the more restricted classes of hereditarily Hopfian (co-Hopfian) and super Hopfian (co-Hopfian) groups in the case where the groups are Abelian.
