Kenneth Starr: Diabolically Evil?, Jeanne L. Schroeder, David G. Carlson Mar 2000

Kenneth Starr: Diabolically Evil?, Jeanne L. Schroeder, David G. Carlson

Articles

The article explores the intersection of law, morality, and subjectivity through the lens of Slavoj Žižek's philosophical works, particularly in the context of the impeachment of President Clinton. It argues that the public's negative reaction to the impeachment was rooted in a fear of encountering "diabolical evil," a concept drawn from Kantian philosophy, where law and morality coincide perfectly. This form of evil is more terrifying than ordinary evil because it is committed without pathological motives, purely for the sake of duty.

Using Technology To Educate The Public, Stephen M. Johnson Jan 2000

Using Technology To Educate The Public, Stephen M. Johnson

Articles

While the primary focus of any law faculty will always be its law students, the Internet and other new technologies enable law teachers to assume a central role in providing free legal education to the public. Although many schools are experimenting with distance learning and computer-assisted legal educa- tion to train law students, the real power of those tools may be their potential to facilitate public access to legal information. Traditionally, educating the general public has not been a primary responsibility of law professors, but today we have not only an opportunity, but an obligation, to develop computer-based legal education …

The Death Of Privacy?, A. Michael Froomkin Jan 2000

The Death Of Privacy?, A. Michael Froomkin

Articles

The rapid deployment of privacy-destroying technologies by governments and businesses threatens to make informational privacy obsolete. The first part of this article describes a range of current technologies to which the law has yet to respond effectively. These include: routine collection of transactional data, growing automated surveillance in public places, deployment of facial recognition technology and other biometrics, cell-phone tracking, vehicle tracking, satellite monitoring, workplace surveillance, Internet tracking from cookies to "clicktrails", hardware-based identifiers, intellectual property-protecting "snitchware," and sense-enhanced searches that allow observers to see through everything from walls to clothes. The cumulative and reinforcing effect of these technologies may …

Internet Sexual Predators: Protecting Children In The Global Community, Madeleine M. Plasencia

Articles

The Internet, serving as the largest network of computers in the world, has provided the horizontal parallax over which all can participate in communication and transaction, education and entertainment4 It also serves a community of participants and beneficiaries whose goals are not always shared or legal. The rise of this advanced technology has led to a new "red light district."

Unlike the physical spaces available for the distribution of pornography and sexual favors for money, the Internet, with its lack of structure, has led to an unimaginable amount of pornography available for any on-line spectator.' Information necessary for consummation of …

Cell Surface Effects Of Androgens Between 1 Pm And 100 Nm On Rat Sertoli Cells And Two Human Prostatic Cell Lines, Lncap And Pc3: Evidence For Two Membrance Receptors, Fiona Lyng, G. R. Jones, F. F.G. Rommerts Jan 2000

Cell Surface Effects Of Androgens Between 1 Pm And 100 Nm On Rat Sertoli Cells And Two Human Prostatic Cell Lines, Lncap And Pc3: Evidence For Two Membrance Receptors, Fiona Lyng, G. R. Jones, F. F.G. Rommerts

Articles

Androgen-induced calcium fluxes and gap junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) were studied in three different cell types. A transient (2–3 min duration) increase in intracellular calcium levels was observed within 20–30 sec of androgen addition, which was followed by a plateau phase with steroid concentrations higher than 1 nM. The kinetics of the calcium responses were similar in immature rat Sertoli cells, which contain normal nuclear receptors; the human prostatic tumor cell line, LNCaP, which contains a mutated nuclear receptor; and the human prostatic cell line, PC3, which does not contain a nuclear receptor. The human A431 tumor cell line did …

Privacy, Publication, And The First Amendment: The Dangers Of First Amendment Exceptionalism, Richard A. Epstein

Articles

The coordination of common law and constitutional norms are of pressing importance on matters of freedom of speech. In the Supreme Court and elsewhere, it is possible to discern two sharply inconsistent attitudes toward this question. One view holds that the First Amendment simply prevents any legislative backsliding from the common law rules that protect freedom of speech and of the press, much as they protect freedom of contract and freedom of action generally. On this view, the standard rule governing damages and injunctive relief apply to speech much as they do anywhere else. On the alternative view of what …

The Victimization Of Juvenile Prostitutes In Ethiopia, Kevin Lalor Jan 2000

The Victimization Of Juvenile Prostitutes In Ethiopia, Kevin Lalor

Articles

This paper quantifies the victimisation experienced by 30 juvenile prostitutes in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Seventy three per cent had been raped at least once and ninety three per cent had been beaten in the course of their work. Only 50% used contraception, resulting in a pregnancy rate of 37%. Findings indicate that prostitution is a highly victimogenic lifestyle, fostered by conditions of extreme deprivation. Policy and practice implications are discussed.

It Takes A Library To Support Distance Learners, Marianne Buehler, Elizabeth Dopp, Kerry A. Hughes, Jennifer Thompson

Articles

Wallace Library's philosophy is to create and provide resources and services that will support all users. Consequently, distance learners and distance faculty have a plethora of online resources available to them, some of which is "pushed out," saving time and effort for the library user. The evolvement of Wallace's online resources is continuous, focused on the student or professor's research need from a geographic distance.
