Lupus Anticoagulunt Associated With Transient Severe Factor X Deficiency: A Report Of Two Patients Presenting With Major Bleeding Complications, Aneel A. Ashrani, Agnes Aysola, Hani Al-Khatib Md, William L. Nichols

Articles

Abstract

Acquired factor X (FX) deficiency is rare, but has been reported in diverse disease states, including systemic amyloidosis and respiratory infections. FX deficiency associated with lupus anticoagulant (LA) and a bleeding diathesis has not been previously reported. We report two patients both of whom presented with a severe bleeding diathesis after a preceding respiratory infection due to isolated FX deficiency associated with a LA. The FX deficiency and LA were transient. We conclude that patients with LA may rarely present with severe acquired FX deficiency. This may be another mechanism whereby patients with antiphospholipid antibodies present with bleeding complications.

Experimental Energy Performance Of Open Cooling Towers Used Under Low And Variable Approach Conditions For Indirect Evaporative Cooling Of Buildings, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn Jan 2003

Experimental Energy Performance Of Open Cooling Towers Used Under Low And Variable Approach Conditions For Indirect Evaporative Cooling Of Buildings, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn

Articles

The success of chilled ceilings and displacement ventilation systems as a means of sensible cooling in buildings has prompted a review of evaporative cooling technology as an effective means of generating the required cooling water. When such cooling water is generated at low approach conditions (2–5 K), at the higher temperatures required in these systems (14–18°C), very high levels of availability result. In many north western European locations the levels of availability are such that the prospect of supplanting rather than simply supplementing the refrigeration system, for sensible cooling purposes, arises. The viability of the technique, however, largely depends on …

Abraham Lincoln's First Amendment, Geoffrey R. Stone Jan 2003

Abraham Lincoln's First Amendment, Geoffrey R. Stone

Articles

As we confront the challenges of the "War on Terrorism," it is useful to look back at our own history to understand how in past crises we have struck the balance between liberty and security. In this Essay, Professor Geoffrey Stone considers how Abraham Lincoln dealt with the conflict between free expression and military necessity during the course of the Civil War. Although we tend to think of Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus as the paramount civil liberties issue in this era (apart from slavery), Professor Stone explores how Lincoln, facing often severe criticism of his administration, struggled to balance …

Death, Taxes, And Cognition, Lee Anne Fennell Jan 2003

Death, Taxes, And Cognition, Lee Anne Fennell

Articles

The psychology of the estate tax is extraordinarily interesting and surprisingly underexplored. In this Article, Professor Fennell considers the ways in which behavioral law and economics might augment and revise existing understandings of the tax and of redistributive policy generally. The Article is structured around two puzzles that have been frequently identified in the estate tax literature: first, why popular opposition to the tax is so great, even among those who have no reason to expect estate tax liability; and second, why those whose estates are likely to be subject to the tax often do not take advantage of the …

Transfer Regulations And Cost-Effectiveness Analysis, Eric A. Posner Jan 2003

Transfer Regulations And Cost-Effectiveness Analysis, Eric A. Posner

Articles

Recent scholarship on regulatory oversight has focused on cost-benefit analysis of prescriptive regulations--regulations that restrict behavior such as pollution-and their use to cure market failures, and has overlooked the vast number of transfer regulations. Transfer regulations are regulations that channel funds to beneficiaries. These regulations are authorized by statutes that establish entitlement programs like Medicare and Social Security, pay one-time distributions to victims of misfortunes such as natural disasters and the 9/11 terrorist attack, and fund pork barrel spending. Cost-benefit analysis cannot be used to evaluate transfer regulations because all transfer regulations fail cost-benefit analysis; cost-effectiveness analysis, however, can be …

Reparations For Slavery And Other Historical Injustices, Eric A. Posner, Adrian Vermeule Jan 2003

Reparations For Slavery And Other Historical Injustices, Eric A. Posner, Adrian Vermeule

Articles

Victims of historical injustices who have no positive law claim against wrongdoers often seek reparations from governments, and occasionally they obtain them. The best known reparations programs are those for Japanese Americans who were interned by the United States government during World War II, and for victims of the Nazi Holocaust. But there are several other less well known programs both in the United States and abroad, and there are countless proposals for new reparations programs, including a proposal for slave reparations in the United States. The moral and political arguments for and against reparations in diverse contexts have received …

The Spatially Averaged Electric Field In The Near Field And Far Field Of A Circular Aperture, Charles Daly, Todd Nuteson, Navalgund Rao Jan 2003

The Spatially Averaged Electric Field In The Near Field And Far Field Of A Circular Aperture, Charles Daly, Todd Nuteson, Navalgund Rao

Articles

This paper presents a theoretical and numerical investigation of the spatially averaged electric field in the beam of a circular aperture. The investigation leads to closed-form analytical expressions, based on scalar diffraction theory, which describe the spatially averaged electric field in the Fresnel region of a circular aperture excited by a spatially uniform, harmonic plane wave. The expressions ultimately permit rapid, practical, and efficient prediction of certain routine electromagnetic measurements. Because the expressions are valid in the Fresnel region, they are also valid in the near field, the far field, and the Fraunhofer region of a circular aperture. In fact, …

Strategic Implications Of Technological Innovation That Is Hard To Sell, Stephen Luxmore, Ken Shaw Jan 2003

Strategic Implications Of Technological Innovation That Is Hard To Sell, Stephen Luxmore, Ken Shaw

Articles

During the last decade the biotechnology industry has made remarkable scientific advancement. It is reasonable to surmise that in addition to corporate and personal goals, an intended outcome of biotechnological research is to benefit society. Yet how should companies react in the face of public scrutiny and often-resulting mistrust for technological innovation? This paper examines the strategic implications of researching, developing and bringing to market technology that is hard to sell. Specifically, we explore the application of technology to genetically modified crops in the agricultural industry.

Water Dispute Resolution In The West: Process Elements For The Modern Era In Basin-Wide Problem Solving, Barbara Cosens Jan 2003

Water Dispute Resolution In The West: Process Elements For The Modern Era In Basin-Wide Problem Solving, Barbara Cosens

Articles

Growing urban water demand, recent recognition of tribal water rights, and needs for critical aquatic habitat in the face of the archaic law governing water allocation are driving people in the western United States to seek alternative methods to resolve water allocation disputes. The current ad hoc and locally driven approach to negotiation of basin-wide water issues runs the risk of overlooking broader interests. Whereas water use is local and rives local economies, the continued viability of our water resources and the legacy we leave to future generations in water infrastructure, social stability, an environmental amenities is national in scope. …
