Aging is a naturally occurring decline of physiological processes and biological pathways that affects both the structural and functional integrity of the body and brain. These physiological changes reduce motor skills, executive function, memory recall, and processing speeds. Aging is also a major risk factor for multiple neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Identifying a biomarker, or biomarkers, that signals the transition from physiological to pathological aging would aid in earlier therapeutic options or interventional strategies. Considering the importance of glutamate signaling in synaptic plasticity, motor movement, and cognition, this neurotransmitter serves as a juncture between cognitive health and disease. …

For people with early or moderate dementia, there are benefits to them continuing to live in their own homes for as long as possible, both in improved quality of life and associated measures such as increased social contact, increased physical activity and lower use of medication, and reduced costs and burden of care. Tools to help extend period of independent living, and to maintain quality of life in this period, are lacking. Systems exist to monitor individuals for problems, e.g. falls or wandering from the home, but there is scope for development of computerised support to help maintain activity in …

Sustainable Building Without Certification: An Exploration Of Implications And Trends, Yewande Abraham, Lisa Greenwood, Jennifer Schneider Jun 2022

Sustainable Building Without Certification: An Exploration Of Implications And Trends, Yewande Abraham, Lisa Greenwood, Jennifer Schneider

Articles

Background: Sustainable buildings play a pivotal role in meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). However, the criteria and process for certification associated with sustainable building rating systems have been seen by many as either cumbersome or too expensive. As a result, some buildings are constructed following sustainable building guidelines without necessarily pursuing external certification. This paper takes a critical look at sustainable building without certification in the US and addresses 3 questions: (1) What is the rationale behind not pursuing certification? (2) When certification is not part of the objective, how are particular sustainability criteria selected? (3) …

Gene therapy is a technique that is currently under expansion and development. Recent advances in genetic medicine have paved the way for a broader range of therapies and laid the groundwork for next-generation technologies. A terminally substituted difluorene-diester Schiff Base calix[4]arene has been studied in this work as possible nanovector to be used in gene therapy. Changes to luminescent behavior of the calixarene macrocycle are reported in the presence of ct-DNA. The calixarene macrocycle interacts with calf thymus DNA (ct-DNA), generating changes in its conformation. Partial double-strand denaturation is induced at low concentrations of the calixarene, resulting in compaction of …

Analysis Of The Evolution Of Parametric Drivers Of High-End Sea-Level Hazards, Alana Hough, Tony E. Wong Jun 2022

Analysis Of The Evolution Of Parametric Drivers Of High-End Sea-Level Hazards, Alana Hough, Tony E. Wong

Articles

Climate models are critical tools for developing strategies to manage the risks posed by sea-level rise to coastal communities. While these models are necessary for understanding climate risks, there is a level of uncertainty inherent in each parameter in the models. This model parametric uncertainty leads to uncertainty in future climate risks. Consequently, there is a need to understand how those parameter uncertainties impact our assessment of future climate risks and the efficacy of strategies to manage them. Here, we use random forests to examine the parametric drivers of future climate risk and how the relative importances of those drivers …

Racial Trauma In Civil Rights Representation, Angela Onwuachi-Willig, Anthony V. Alfieri Jun 2022

Racial Trauma In Civil Rights Representation, Angela Onwuachi-Willig, Anthony V. Alfieri

Articles

Narratives of trauma told by clients and communities of color have inspired an increasing number of civil rights and antiracist lawyers and academics to call for more trauma-informed training for law students and lawyers. These advocates have argued not only for greater trauma-sensitive practices and trauma-centered interventions on behalf of adversely impacted individuals and groups but also for greater awareness of the risks of secondary or vicarious trauma for lawyers who represent traumatized clients and communities. In this Article, we join this chorus of attorneys and academics. Harnessing the recent civil rights case of P.P. v. Compton Unified School District, …

Analysing Urban Energy Transition In Light Of The Energy Conservation Act, 2001, Madhubanti Sadhya

Articles

The interplay of legislative division and inter-ministerial convergence in India impacts energy conservation efforts across states, reflecting socio-economic disparities. Urban areas, central to energy efficiency initiatives, face challenges due to varying state-level political and economic contexts. Effective implementation of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, and urban development policies necessitates tailored approaches and robust data tools for mapping and tracking energy use. Bridging central and state policies is crucial for achieving uniform energy efficiency and meeting national energy transition targets.

Surgical Treatment Of Multiple Deforming Xanthomas Of The Foot And Ankle With Complete Excision And Rotational Skin Flaps: A Case Report, Qanita Ali, Rachelle Randall, Lawrence M. Fallat

Articles

Xanthomas are cholesterol rich nodular dermal lesions characterized by lipid-laden macrophages that accumulate in skin and tendons.1 These lesions are frequently associated with hyperlipidemia disorders characterized by impaired cholesterol metabolism and accelerated atherosclerotic plaque development.2 Until recently, xanthomas were considered mere cosmetic lesions, however extensive evidence has shown that the presence of xanthomas signify increased cardiovascular risk and reduced average lifespan.3 Treatment centers around lipid lowering agents and rarely are these masses large enough to require surgical resection, thus there is very little literature discussing proper surgical excision.4, 5 We present a rare case of a 65 year old female …

The Case For Banning (And Mandating) Ransomware Insurance, Kyle D. Logue, Adam B. Shniderman

Articles

Ransomware attacks are becoming increasingly pervasive and disruptive, resulting in ransom demands becoming more exorbitant. Payments for ransom costs are increasingly being covered by insurance, which may offer coverage for a variety of cyber-related losses. Some commentators have expressed concern over this market phenomenon. Specifically, the concern is that the presence of insurance is making the ransomware problem worse based on the following theory: because there is ransomware insurance that covers ransom payments, and because paying the ransom is often far cheaper than paying the restoration and business interruption costs covered under the policy, there is an increased tendency to …

Mapping The Restoration Of Degraded Peatland As A Field Of Research Area: A Scientometric Review, Samuel Obeng Apori, Douglas Mcmillan, Michelle Giltrap, Furong Tian

Articles

Degraded peatland reduced many ecosystem services such as water quality and quantity, biodiversity, carbon storage, climate regulations and other cultural benefits. Therefore, several initiatives for the restoration of degraded peatland (RDP) have been attempted to restore the ecosystem processes, productivity and services of the degraded peatland to its original natural condition. Notwithstanding the popularity of RDP research among researchers and industry practitioners, a quantitative technique to map a comprehensive survey of the intellectual core and the general body landscape of knowledge on RDP research does not exist. In this study, a scientometric analysis was employed to analyze 522 documents using …

The increased environmental pollution has led to finding sustainable solutions for non-renewable plastic-based food packaging materials. Thus, the use of biomaterial-based packaging material has become an immense trend. This work aims at developing an antimicrobial biodegradable chitosan-alginate bio-nano composite film with TiO2 nanoparticle (NPs) for food packaging applications. The film was developed by a solution casting method. The chemical, mechanical, thermal, barrier, antimicrobial, and biodegradable properties of the packaging films were evaluated. Packaging studies were performed for 15 days for cherry tomatoes. The designed packaging material had enhanced the mechanical properties with a significantly (p < 0.05) higher tensile strength of 15.76 folds and 2 fold higher elongation at break. The UV barrier properties increased by 88.6%, while the film transparency decreased by 87.23%. Molecular interaction of N-H covalent bonds was observed between alginate and chitosan together with TiO2 NPs. The developed bio-nano composite film showed antimicrobial activity against foodborne pathogens E. coli, S. aureus, S. typhi, and L. monocytogene with a log reduction of 7.08, 7.28, 6.04 & 6.02 log CFU/ml respectively at 24 hours incubation period. The film was completely biodegraded and a weight loss of 89.06% was observed in bio-nanocomposite film during the 3 months. Shelf-life estimation of cherry tomato using developed packaging films showed an increase in the shelf-life up to 8 days with stable pH, total soluble solids, and weight with no bacterial growth when packaged with prepared film. Owing to their improved mechanical, UV barrier, antibacterial, and biodegradability, the prepared active bio-nano composite packaging films could be considered a potential candidate for fruit packaging.

Growth hormone receptor knockout (GHRKO) mice are smaller, long living, and have an increased metabolic rate compared with normal (N) littermates. However, it is known that thermoneutral conditions (30-32°C) elicit metabolic adaptations in mice, increasing the metabolic rate. Therefore, we hypothesized that environmental temperature would affect the expression profile of different adipose tissue depots in GHRKO mice. For this, N (n = 12) and GHRKO (n = 11) male mice were maintained at 23 or 30°C from weaning until 11 months of age. RNA sequencing from adipose tissue depots (epididymal-eWAT, perirenal-pWAT, subcutaneous-sWAT, and brown fat-BAT) was performed. Thermoneutrality increased body …

Combining Pharmacokinetics And Vibrational Spectroscopy: Mcr-Als Hard-And-Soft Modelling Of Drug Uptake In Vitro Using Tailored Kinetic Constraints, David Perez-Guaita, Guillermo Quintas, Zeineb Farhane, Roma Tauler, Hugh Byrne

Articles

Raman microspectroscopy is a label-free technique which is very suited for the investigation of pharmacokinetics of cellular uptake, mechanisms of interaction, and efficacies of drugs in vitro. However, the complexity of the spectra makes the identification of spectral patterns associated with the drug and subsequent cellular responses difficult. Indeed, multivariate methods that relate spectral features to the inoculation time do not normally take into account the kinetics involved, and important theoretical information which could assist in the elucidation of the relevant spectral signatures is excluded. Here, we propose the integration of kinetic equations in the modelling of drug uptake and …

Early relational health between caregivers and children is foundational for child health and well-being. Children and caregivers are also embedded within multiple systems and sectors, or a “child-serving ecosystem”, that shapes child development. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has made this embeddedness abundantly clear, systems remain siloed and lack coordination. Fostering relational health amongst layers of this ecosystem may be a way to systematically support young children and families who are facing adversity. We integrate theory, examples, and empirical findings to develop a conceptual model informed by infant mental health and public health frameworks that illustrates how relational health across the …

National Medical Commission Act, 2019: The Need For Parity, Ov Nandimath, S. Suhas, Y. Malik, B.C. Malathesh

Articles

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has replaced the erstwhile Medical Council of India with the intention of bringing about positive reforms in medical education and enforcing ethical standards in the practice of medicine in India. The NMC Act of 2019, under clauses 3 and 4 of Section 30, details the procedure of grievance redressal. However, these clauses in their current form empower doctors and patients unequally. While the Act empowers an aggrieved medical professional to approach the relevant appellate fora under the NMC, it is silent on a similar opportunity for an aggrieved patient or caregiver to appeal against the …

Duoethnography As Transformative Praxis: Conversations About Nourishment And Coercion In The Covid-Era Academy, Natali Valdez, Megan Carney, Emily Yates-Doerr, Abril Saldaña-Tejeda, Jessica Hardin, Hanna Garth, Alyshia Galvez, Maggie Dickinson

Articles

This article introduces the feminist praxis of duoethnography as a way to examine the COVID era. As a group of diverse, junior, midcareer, and senior feminist scholars, we developed a methodology to critically reflect on our positions in our institutions and social worlds. As a method, duoethnography emphasizes the dialogical intimacy that can form through anthropological work. While autoethnography draws on individual daily lives to make sense of sociopolitical dynamics, duoethnography emphasizes the relational character of research across people and practices. Taking the relational aspects of knowledge production seriously, we conceptualized this praxis as a transformative method for facilitating radical …

The Power Of A Good Story: How Narrative Techniques Can Make Transactional Documents More Persuasive, Karen J. Sneddon

Articles

Transactional documents are complex, multi-faceted documents reviewed by various audiences at multiple points in time. They are more than descriptive legal devices that dictate the exchange of widgets for cash. While the core of many transactional documents will be the acquisition, creation, or exchange of property or services, transactional documents do more than memorialize that understanding. At first glance, transactional documents may seem simply like expository texts that aim to create the private law between the transacting parties and educate the audience by delivering a sequence of instructions, but transactional documents do much more. They tell the stories of the …

Articles

Total talar dislocations are rare, significant surgical challenges for foot and ankle surgeons. These dislocations can be very difficult to manually close-reduce, requiring immediate surgical intervention secondary to arterial impingement, pain and risk of skin necrosis attributable to skin tenting. In this case series, we report on three patients who presented to the emergency room following a traumatic ankle injury. Ankle radiographs and computed tomography (CT) scans were obtained, revealing pantalar dislocations. Closed reduction utilizing Charnley’s principles was attempted in the emergency room through manual accentuation of the deformity, traction and reduction. Closed reduction was unsuccessful in all three patients …
