Analysis Of Strain And Intermixing In Single-Layer Ge/Si Quantum Dots Using Polarized Raman Spectroscopy, Anna Baranov, A. V. Federov, Tatiana Perova, R. A. Moore, V. Yam, D. Bouchier, V. Le Thanh, Kevin Berwick Jan 2006

Analysis Of Strain And Intermixing In Single-Layer Ge/Si Quantum Dots Using Polarized Raman Spectroscopy, Anna Baranov, A. V. Federov, Tatiana Perova, R. A. Moore, V. Yam, D. Bouchier, V. Le Thanh, Kevin Berwick

Articles

The built-in strain and composition of as-grown and Si-capped single layers of Ge∕Si dots grown at various temperatures (460–800 °C) are studied by a comparative analysis of the Ge-Ge and Si-Ge modes in the polarized Raman spectra of the dots. A pronounced reduction of the strain and Ge content in the dots after deposition of the cap layer at low temperatures is observed, indicating that strain-induced Si diffusion from the cap layer is occurring. For large dots grown at 700–800 °C the observations are in agreement with a model of the Ge∕Si dot consisting of a Si-rich boundary region and …

Design Of One-Dimensional Composite Photonic Crystals With An Extended Photonic Band Gap, Vladimir Tolmachev, Kevin Berwick Jan 2006

Design Of One-Dimensional Composite Photonic Crystals With An Extended Photonic Band Gap, Vladimir Tolmachev, Kevin Berwick

Articles

A technique for photonic band gap (PBG) extension based on mixing photonic crystals with different lattice constants or filling factors is suggested. For the design of photonic crystals with maximal PBG extension the gap map imposition method is utilized. Gap maps for composite photonic crystals based on Si-air structures are calculated and used to predict optimal structures for fabrication.

Fta And The City: Imagineering Sustainable Urban Development, John Ratcliffe, Elzbieta Krawczyk, Ruth Kelly Jan 2006

Fta And The City: Imagineering Sustainable Urban Development, John Ratcliffe, Elzbieta Krawczyk, Ruth Kelly

Articles

This paper argues that urban planners and policy-makers lack an effective future-oriented approach enabling them to comprehend current complexity, anticipate impending change and shape a preferred future condition. In doing so it: - reviews the performance of contemporary city planning; - examines the need to chart and navigate the city technosphere by reference to city capital; - explores ways in which planning can benefit from a futures studies approach; - describes generally how futures-oriented thinking can produce effective city prospective; and, - poses specifically a number of questions regarding the concept of the intelligent city’. The paper concludes by calling …

A Dose Threshold For A Medium Transfer Bystander Effect For A Human Skin Cell Line, Zhengfeng Liou, Carmel Mothersill, Fiona Mcneill, Fiona Lyng, Soo Hyun Byun, Colin Seymour, William Prestwich Jan 2006

A Dose Threshold For A Medium Transfer Bystander Effect For A Human Skin Cell Line, Zhengfeng Liou, Carmel Mothersill, Fiona Mcneill, Fiona Lyng, Soo Hyun Byun, Colin Seymour, William Prestwich

Articles

The existence of radiation-induced bystander effects mediated by diffusible factors is now accepted but the mechanisms and precise behavior at low doses remain unclear. We exposed cells to gamma doses in the range 0.04 mGy – 5 Gy, harvested the culture medium and transferred it to unirradiated reporter cells. Calcium fluxes and clonogenic survival were measured in the recipients. We show evidence for a dose threshold around 2 mGy for the human skin cell line used with a suggestion of increased survival below that dose. Similar experiments using direct gamma irradiation showed no reduction in survival until the dose exceeded …

An Explicit Scheme For Multifluid Magnetohydrodynamics, Stephen O'Sullivan, Turlough Downes Jan 2006

An Explicit Scheme For Multifluid Magnetohydrodynamics, Stephen O'Sullivan, Turlough Downes

Articles

When modelling astrophysical fluid flows, it is often appropriate to discard the canonical magnetohydrodynamic approximation, thereby freeing the magnetic field to diffuse with respect to the bulk velocity field. As a consequence, however, the induction equation can become problematic to solve via standard explicit techniques. In particular, the Hall diffusion term admits fast-moving whistler waves which can impose a vanishing time-step limit.Within an explicit differencing framework, a multifluid scheme for weakly ionized plasmas is presented which relies upon a new approach to integrating the induction equation efficiently. The first component of this approach is a relatively unknown method of accelerating …

The Irrepressible Myth Of Celotex: Reconsidering Summary Judgment Burdens Twenty Years After The Trilogy, Adam N. Steinman Jan 2006

The Irrepressible Myth Of Celotex: Reconsidering Summary Judgment Burdens Twenty Years After The Trilogy, Adam N. Steinman

Articles

Twenty years ago the Supreme Court decided a trilogy of cases on summary judgment These cases have had a profound impact on federal litigation Empirical data presented in this article demonstrate that federal courts have cited these three cases more than any Supreme Court decisions in history Celotex Corp v Catrett is widely recognized as the most significant decision of the trilogy both because it expanded the availability of summary judgment and because it remains the Courts most current instructions on how burdens are allocated between the party seeking and the party opposing summary judgment However Celotex failed to clarify …

This paper will also discuss the application of the approach to the telecommunication Industry.

Xbrl In The Accounting Curriculum: A Survey Of Ais Faculty, Ashutosh Deshmukh, Khondkar Karim, Jeffrey Romine, Robert W. Rutledge Jan 2006

Xbrl In The Accounting Curriculum: A Survey Of Ais Faculty, Ashutosh Deshmukh, Khondkar Karim, Jeffrey Romine, Robert W. Rutledge

Articles

The purpose of this paper is to assess the challenges and opportunities associated with introducing XBRL (eXtensible Business Reporting Language) into the accounting curricula. XBRL is an electronic format for simplifying the flow of financial information between software programs. It is a complex, rapidly changing language that is multi-disciplinary in nature. This poses difficult pedagogical questions. The primary question is whether XBRL should be covered in the curriculum or not. If answered affirmatively, the issues related to which topics should be covered and to what extent become pertinent. The concurrent problems of faculty preparation and availability of instructional materials also …

The Irrational Auditor And Irrational Liability, Adam C. Pritchard Jan 2006

The Irrational Auditor And Irrational Liability, Adam C. Pritchard

Articles

This Article argues that less liability for auditors in certain areas might encourage more accurate and useful financial statements, or at least equally accurate statements at a lower cost. Audit quality is promoted by three incentives: reputation, regulation, and litigation. When we take reputation and regulation into account, exposing auditors to potentially massive liability may undermine the effectiveness of reputation and regulation, thereby diminishing integrity of audited financial statements. The relation of litigation to the other incentives that promote audit quality has become more important in light of the sea change that occurred in the regulation of the auditing profession …

Foreword [To Boilerplate: Foundations Of Market Contracts Symposium], Omri Ben-Shahar Jan 2006

Foreword [To Boilerplate: Foundations Of Market Contracts Symposium], Omri Ben-Shahar

Articles

It is tempting to open this symposium with yet another "boilerplate" salute to the challenge that standard-form contracts pose for contract law doctrine. You may have seen many tributes to this fundamental problem. If I were to offer my own variation on this familiar introduction, I would have perhaps tried to come up with an original spin to induce you to read forward another paragraph or two. I would probably have talked about a major divide within contract law between the "law of negotiations" and "product regulation." The former is the body of doctrines that determine the legal consequences of …

Getting Away With Murder: Guatemala's Failure To Protect Women And Rodi Alvarado's Quest For Safety, Angélica Cházaro Jan 2006

Getting Away With Murder: Guatemala's Failure To Protect Women And Rodi Alvarado's Quest For Safety, Angélica Cházaro

Articles

This report examines the underlying conditions that cause women like Rodi to flee their home countries and seek protection elsewhere. The report starts with a description of the circumstances that led Rodi to leave Guatemala. It then analyzes the widespread violence against and murders of women in Guatemala, specifically focusing on the number of murders, the victims, the brutality of the crimes, the context in which they occur, and the theories behind the murders. It next looks to the aspects of the Guatemalan legal and judicial systems that render women vulnerable to violence and then fail to protect them. It …

Horseradish And Soybean Peroxidases: Comparable Tools For Alternative Niches?, Barry Ryan, CiaráN Fagan, Neil Carolan Jan 2006

Horseradish And Soybean Peroxidases: Comparable Tools For Alternative Niches?, Barry Ryan, CiaráN Fagan, Neil Carolan

Articles

Horseradish and soybean peroxidases (HRP and SBP, respectively) are useful biotechnological tools. HRP is often termed the classical plant heme peroxidase, and although it has been studied for decades our understanding has deepened since its cloning and subsequent expression, which has enabled numerous mutational and protein engineering studies. SBP, however, has been neglected until recently; despite offering a real alternative to HRP that actually outperforms it in terms of stability. SBP is now used in numerous biotechnological applications, including biosensors. Review of both is timely. This article summarises and discusses the main insights into the structure and mechanism of HRP, …

Survival Of Antibiotic Resistant And Antibiotic Sensitive Strains Of E. Coli O157 And E. Coli O26 In Food Matrices., Ciara Walsh, Geraldine Duffy, I. S. Blair, D. A. Mcdowell

Articles

Escherichia coli O157:H7 or E. coli O26, which were AS (antibiotic sensitive), AR (laboratory created antibiotic resistant mutants), or naturally MAR (multi-antibiotic resistant), were inoculated into laboratory media, yoghurt or orange juice and their growth/survival monitored during enrichment at 37 °C or storage at 4 °C. The strains were also inoculated into minced beef and their thermal inactivation (D-values) examined at 55 °C, with and without a prior heat shock at 48 °C. The growth kinetics (lag phases, growth rates) of the VTEC (verocytotoxigenic E. coli), incubated over 24 h at 37 °C in laboratory media, were …

Attention Driven Reference Resolution In Multimodal Contexts, John D. Kelleher Jan 2006

Attention Driven Reference Resolution In Multimodal Contexts, John D. Kelleher

Articles

In recent years a a number of psycholinguistic experiments have pointed to the interaction between language and vision. In particular, the interaction between visual attention and linguistic reference. In parallel with this, several theories of discourse have attempted to provide an account of the relationship between types of referential expressions on the one hand and the degree of mental activation on the other. Building on both of these traditions, this paper describes an attention based approach to visually situated reference resolution. The framework uses the relationship between referential form and preferred mode of interpretation as a basis for a weighted …

Giving It Away : Free Technology Transfer To The Irish Sme Sector, Peter Kavanagh, Andy Maguire, James J. Casey Jan 2006

Giving It Away : Free Technology Transfer To The Irish Sme Sector, Peter Kavanagh, Andy Maguire, James J. Casey

Articles

One of Europe’s major weaknesses lies in its inferiority in terms of transforming the results of technological research and skills into innovations and competitive advantages. (European Commission, 1995, p. 8.)

Technology transfer is a key aspect of economic development and research administration. These concerns are shared equally between academia and industry on both sides of the Atlantic. As technology is developed at a greater rate, concerns about the technology transfer will heighten. This article focuses on technology transfer in Ireland, particularly in the SME (Small and Medium size Enterprises, under 250 employees) sector. As the main Lisbon Objective has not …

Isolation And Characterization Of Toxin A-Negative, Toxin B-Positive Clostridium Difficile In Dublin, Ireland, Denise Drudy, N. Harnedy, S. Fanning, R. O’Mahony, L. Kyne Jan 2006

Isolation And Characterization Of Toxin A-Negative, Toxin B-Positive Clostridium Difficile In Dublin, Ireland, Denise Drudy, N. Harnedy, S. Fanning, R. O’Mahony, L. Kyne

Articles

Clostridium difficile is a major cause of infectious diarrhoea in hospitalised patients. Most pathogenic C. difficile strains produce two toxins, A and B; however, clinically relevant toxin A-negative, toxin Bpositive (A– B+ ) strains of C. difficile that cause diarrhoea and colitis in humans have been isolated worldwide. The aims of this study were to isolate and characterise A– B+ strains from two university hospitals in Dublin, Ireland. Samples positive for C. difficile were identified daily by review of ELISA results and were cultured on selective media. Following culture, toxin-specific immunoassays, IMR-90 cytotoxicity assays and PCR were used to analyse …

Champagne, Feta, And Bourbon: The Spirited Debate About Geographical Indications, Justin Hughes Jan 2006

Champagne, Feta, And Bourbon: The Spirited Debate About Geographical Indications, Justin Hughes

Articles

Geographical Indications (GIs) are terms for foodstuffs that are associated with certain geographical areas. The law of GIs is currently in a state of flux. Legal protection for GIs mandated in the TRIPS Agreement is implemented through appellations law in France and through certification mark systems in the United States and Canada. This Article first examines the state of GIs throughout the world. The author then turns to the continuing debate between the European Union and other industrialized economies over this unique form of intellectual property. The European Union claims that increasing GI protection would aid developing countries, but, in …

Public Law Limitations On Privatization Of Government Functions, Paul R. Verkuil Jan 2006

Public Law Limitations On Privatization Of Government Functions, Paul R. Verkuil

Articles

The privatization movement is on the verge of succeeding too well. The fact that some of what government does can be done better and cheaper by the private sector has gained such momentum that the public sector is sometimes seen as redundant or irrelevant. But the economist's make-or-buy choice simply fails to capture the full range of responsibilities that government faces in deciding whether to outsource a particular function to private contractors.

This Article illuminates the public dimension of government functions. By exploring the public-private distinction and relating it to constitutional, statutory, and administrative requirements, it structures an argument that …

Orientalism And Religion In The Romantic Era-Rammohan Ray’S Vedanta(S), Amit Ray Jan 2006

Orientalism And Religion In The Romantic Era-Rammohan Ray’S Vedanta(S), Amit Ray

Articles

Abstract:

This chapter examines how Raja Rammohan Ray utilized Vedanta philosophy as a strategic response to colonial critiques of Hinduism during the early nineteenth century. Ray emerged as a pivotal figure who navigated between British orientalist discourse and Indian religious reform, employing Advaita Vedanta to counter accusations of idolatry and polytheism leveled against Hindu practices. The analysis demonstrates how Ray's translations of the Upanishads and his promotion of Vedantic monotheism served dual purposes: defending indigenous civilization against missionary attacks while accommodating European notions of rational religion. Ray's approach involved significant textual interventions, including rendering the neuter brahman as masculine "God" …

Thomas Aquinas And The Metaphysics Of Law, William S. Brewbaker Iii Jan 2006

Thomas Aquinas And The Metaphysics Of Law, William S. Brewbaker Iii

Articles

Despite modernity's longstanding aversion to metaphysics, legal scholars are increasingly questioning whether law can be understood in isolation from wider questions about the nature of reality. This Article examines perhaps the most famous of metaphysical legal texts—Thomas Aquinas's still widely read Treatise on Law—with a view toward tracing the influence of Thomas's metaphysical presuppositions. This Article shows that Thomas's account of human law cannot be fully understood apart from his metaphysics. Attention to Thomas's hierarchical view of reality exposes tensions between Thomas's “top-down” account of law and his sophisticated “bottom-up” observations. For example, Thomas grounds human law's authority in its …

Beautiful Dreamer: Review Of A Life Of H.L.A. Hart: The Nightmare And The Noble Dream, By Nicola Lacey, Jeanne L. Schroeder Jan 2006

Beautiful Dreamer: Review Of A Life Of H.L.A. Hart: The Nightmare And The Noble Dream, By Nicola Lacey, Jeanne L. Schroeder

Articles

H.L.A. Hart is probably the most important legal theorist in the modern English-speaking world. The intriguing subtitle of Nicola Lacey's intimate biography, "The Nightmare and the Noble Dream, " echoes the name of Hart's 1997 Georgia Law Review paper, in which he identifies two warring, equally inadequate, visions of law in American jurisprudence: the "nightmare" of complete indeterminacy and unbridled judicial discretion and the "noble dream " of a closed, deterministic legal system of judicial restraint. Lacey implies that Hart's life itself was both a nightmare and a noble dream. This book review expands on Lacey's work and suggests how …

Radical Integration, Michelle Adams Jan 2006

Radical Integration, Michelle Adams

Articles

"Radical Integration" explores the two primary theoretical frameworks for achieving black liberation: the integration approach (which can be understood as assimilationist) and the identity-based, community-centered approach (which can be understood as isolationist). I argue that neither framework, by itself, is enough to ensure the achievement of true black liberation. I extract key elements of each approach and harmonize them to envision an entirely new framework. This framework, "radical integration," refocuses on the impact of racial segregation on the black community and simultaneously recognizes the need to address concerns about black identity and black authenticity in an integrated environment.
