Undergraduate Application Based Research: Design And Testing Of Wireless Phone Charger, Garth Crosby, Joseph Deppong Jan 2013

Undergraduate Application Based Research: Design And Testing Of Wireless Phone Charger, Garth Crosby, Joseph Deppong

Articles

Currently, there exists an abundance of handheld electronic devices, especially smart phones that require frequent charging. Traditionally, these devices were charged by using wired power adapters (chargers). However, the use of wires poses limits in terms of user convenience and distance from electrical outlets. While wireless chargers exist, commercial widespread use of the technology for consumer electronics is relatively recent. Also, the application of the underlying science and engineering principles of power transfer wirelessly are not commonly explored in Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) programs. In this paper, the authors report their findings and present the results of application- based research …

The Evolution Of Media Development: The Media Development Model In A Changing World, Daire Higgins Jan 2013

The Evolution Of Media Development: The Media Development Model In A Changing World, Daire Higgins

Articles

The origins of Media Development can be found in Post WW2 Europe and the industry grew as a more significant aspect of international aid work in the 1980s and the 1990s, following the end of the Cold War and the collapse of the former Soviet Union. It was hoped that exporting the concept of a free and independent press would foster democracy in post-communist and transitional countries. While it is debated on how successful these projects were, questions are now being asked about the relevance of media development model itself, the liberal press ideology behind the training projects and what …

Beyond The Usual Suspects: Acus, Rulemaking 2.0 And A Vision For Broader, More Informed And More Transparent Rulemaking, Stephen M. Johnson Jan 2013

Beyond The Usual Suspects: Acus, Rulemaking 2.0 And A Vision For Broader, More Informed And More Transparent Rulemaking, Stephen M. Johnson

Articles

In an ideal world, administrative agencies would develop regulations in an informal rulemaking process that would be transparent and efficient and that included broad input from the public, or an entity advocating for the public, as well as the regulated community. Instead, critics assert that the informal rulemaking process is opaque and is dominated by regulated entities and industry groups, rather than public interest groups. The process does not encourage a dialogue among the commenters or between the commenters and the agency. Indeed, regulated entities are frequently strategic in the timing of their comments, withholding comment until the end of …

Customer Decision-Making Processes And Motives For Self-Service Technology Usage In Multi-Channel Hospitality Environments, Petranka Kelly, Jennifer Lawlor, Michael Mulvey

Articles

The contemporary hospitality service industry is changing with the introduction of new self-service technologies (SSTs) and their rapid adoption by customers. Examples of SSTs include hotel reservation websites, self check-in kiosks and mobile telephone service applications. The introduction of these electronic channels for communication with customers offers further opportunities for customer relationship management if customers choose to interact with them. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to understand the customer decision-making processes and underlying motivations for SST usage in multi-channel hospitality service environments. The data collection method employed was short qualitative interviews with 133 passengers at the departure area …

Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering Microscopy By Dispersive Wave Generations In A Polarization Maintaining Photonic Crystal Fiber, Jinhui Yuan, Guiyao Zhou, Hongzhan Liu, Changmin Xia, Xinzhu Sang, Qiang Wu, Chongxiu Yu, Kuiru Wang, Binbin Yan, Ying Han, Gerald Farrell, Lantian Hou Jan 2013

Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering Microscopy By Dispersive Wave Generations In A Polarization Maintaining Photonic Crystal Fiber, Jinhui Yuan, Guiyao Zhou, Hongzhan Liu, Changmin Xia, Xinzhu Sang, Qiang Wu, Chongxiu Yu, Kuiru Wang, Binbin Yan, Ying Han, Gerald Farrell, Lantian Hou

Articles

The polarization maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF) with two zero dispersion wavelengths is designed and fabricated by the improved stack-and-draw technology in our laboratory. The broadband blue-shifted and red-shifted dispersive waves (DWs) are efficiently generated from soliton self-frequency shift (SSFS) along the slow axis of PM-PCF. By optimizing the pump parameters and the fiber length, the polarized DWs centered in the normal dispersion region can be used as the pump and Stokes pulses for the high resolution coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) microscopy. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the widely tunable relevant CARS wavelengths can be obtained by adjusting the …

Integrated Scenarios Of Energy-Related Co2 Emissions In Ireland: A Multi-Sectoral Analysis To 2020, Tadhg O'Mahony, Peng Zhou, John Sweeney

Articles

This paper presents future scenarios of Irish energy-related CO2 emissions to 2020, using a combination of multi-sectoral decomposition analysis with scenario analysis. Alternative development paths, driving forces and sectoral contributions in different scenarios have been explored. The scenarios are quantified by using decomposition analysis as a Divisia Index SCenario GENerator (DISCGEN). The driving forces of population, economic and social development, energy resources and technology and governance and policies are discussed. A set of four integrated or ‘hybrid’ qualitative and quantitative baseline emission scenarios are developed. It is found that sectoral contributions and emissions in each scenario vary significantly. The …

Like A Glass Slipper On A Stepsister: How The One Ring Rules Them All At Trial, Cathren Page Jan 2013

Like A Glass Slipper On A Stepsister: How The One Ring Rules Them All At Trial, Cathren Page

Articles

Trial attorneys can learn techniques that fiction writers have been using successfully for centuries and endow a single object to “rule them all.” In fact, there is a growing field of legal scholarship, known as Applied Legal Storytelling, which involves applying story telling concepts to legal concepts, and some evidence suggests that juries are responsive to narrative framework. Thus trial attorneys can use the literary concept of endowed objects to identify a key piece of physical evidence that weaves a thread of narrative continuity through the case and resonates in the mind of the judge or juror. ...

Legitimacy, Adaptation And Resilience In Ecosystem Management, Barbara Cosens Jan 2013

Legitimacy, Adaptation And Resilience In Ecosystem Management, Barbara Cosens

Articles

Ecologists have made great strides in developing criteria for describing the resilience of an ecological system. In addition, expansion of that effort to social-ecological systems has begun the process of identifying changes to the social system necessary to foster resilience in an ecological system such as the use of adaptive management and integrated ecosystem management. However, these changes to governance needed to foster ecosystem resilience will not be adopted by democratic societies without careful attention to their effect on the social system itself. Delegation of increased flexibility for adaptive management to resource management agencies must include careful attention to assuring …

Examining User-Created Description In The Archival Profession, Matthew J. Gorzalski

Articles

Interest in user created metadata has increased in recent years. In 2009-2010 the RLG Partner Social Metadata Working Group examined the social metadata practices of libraries, archives, and museums worldwide. They found that more than half of studied institutions improve metadata with user created description. This article presents the results of a survey conducted in January-February 2013 on the social metadata practices of North American archival and special collections repositories. To what extent are archives allowing users to provide descriptive metadata using Web 2.0 technologies? Is user generated content integrated into finding aids, catalog records, or other authoritative metadata record? …

The Fourth Amendment In The Information Age, Ricardo J. Bascuas Jan 2013

The Fourth Amendment In The Information Age, Ricardo J. Bascuas

Articles

In 2013, the Supreme Court tacitly conceded that the expectations-of-privacy test used since 1967 to assess claims of Fourth Amendment violations was inadequate. It asserted that the previous property-based test for Fourth Amendment violations had never despite widespread agreement to the contrary been overruled. The Court compounded its artfulness by applying a new, significantly weaker trespass test that, like the expectations-of-privacy test, enjoys no legal pedigree. This new trespass test, which is to be applied together with the expectations-of-privacy test, suffers from the same defect as the test it purportedly supplements. It does not require the government to respect private …

An Fda For Financial Innovation: Applying The Insurable Interest Doctrine To 21st Century Financial Markets, Eric A. Posner, E. Glen Weyl Jan 2013

An Fda For Financial Innovation: Applying The Insurable Interest Doctrine To 21st Century Financial Markets, Eric A. Posner, E. Glen Weyl

Articles

The financial crisis of 2008 was caused in part by speculative investment in complex derivatives. In enacting the Dodd-Frank Act, Congress sought to address the problem of speculative investment, but it merely transferred that authority to various agencies, which have not yet found a solution. We propose that when firms invent new financial products, they be forbidden to sell them until they receive approval from a government agency designed along the lines of the FDA, which screens pharmaceutical innovations. The agency would approve financial products if they satisfy a test for social utility that focuses on whether the product will …
