Bible Software On The Workbench Of The Biblical Scholar: Assessment And Perspective, Oliver Glanz
Bible Software On The Workbench Of The Biblical Scholar: Assessment And Perspective, Oliver Glanz
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
This article pursues two objectives. First, it tries to explain why Bible software is still not accepted as an indispensable tool for textual analysis. Second, it suggests that modern Hebrew databases can truly impact the analytic methodology of biblical scholars and help to verify and falsify interpretative suggestions. To achieve these two objectives, I will first describe the role Bible software plays in today’s scholarship. By contrasting the aids that Bible software offers with the analytic needs of biblical scholars, it is possible to show clearly what current electronic tools need if they are to play an essential methodological role …

The Rationale For Canonical Theology: An Approach To Systematic Theology After Modernism, John C. Peckham
The Rationale For Canonical Theology: An Approach To Systematic Theology After Modernism, John C. Peckham
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
What should systematic theology look like after modernism? Many recent answers to this question revolve around the communitarian turn, advocating the retrieval/ressourcement of Christian tradition in order to address the situation after the failure of modernity. While advancing a cogent criticism of modernism, however, communitarianism may jeopardize the functional priority of Scripture as canon. This article introduces and explains the rationale for canonical theological method as an alternative for the theological landscape after modernism.
Whereas communitarian approaches adopt a community-determined, normative, and extra-canonical interpretive arbiter of doctrine, canonical theology views the biblical canon as the uniquely authoritative and sufficient …

Learning And Unlearning: A Context For Important Developments In The Seventh-Day Adventist Understanding Of The Trinity, 1888–1898, Gilbert M. Valentine
Learning And Unlearning: A Context For Important Developments In The Seventh-Day Adventist Understanding Of The Trinity, 1888–1898, Gilbert M. Valentine
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
A close study of new documentary sources enables historians to know much more about the historical context for major developments in the Seventh-day Adventist understanding of the doctrine of the Trinity than what has previously been written. None of the previous studies on the development of the Trinity doctrine in Adventism seem to have considered the implications of a cluster of letters written in the 1940s in which Leroy Froom, then editor of Ministry, and Arthur Spalding, author of the Origin and History of Seventh-day Adventists, dialogued with Herbert Camden Lacey about the background to this development. As …
Neo-Subordinationism: The Alien Argumentation In The Gender Debate, Matthew L. Tinkham Jr.
Neo-Subordinationism: The Alien Argumentation In The Gender Debate, Matthew L. Tinkham Jr.
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
Over the last forty years, the debate over gender roles in the home, church, and society has escalated in an unprecedented way among evangelical Christians due to the introduction of an alien argumentation that grounds the permanent, functional subordination of women to men in the being of God. This argumentation—which is termed “neo-subordinationism” in this article—states that there is a prescriptive hierarchical ordering of the immanent Trinity that is recognizable through the economic Trinity. In this Trinitarian hierarchy, the Son and the Holy Spirit are said to be ontologically equal but eternally subordinated in role and authority to the Father, …

Pericope Adulterae: A Most Perplexing Passage, Steven Grabiner
Pericope Adulterae: A Most Perplexing Passage, Steven Grabiner
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
The account of the woman caught in adultery, traditionally found in John’s Gospel, is full of encouragement to sinners in need of forgiveness. Nevertheless, due to its textual history, this story—referred to as the Pericope Adulterae—is considered by many scholars to be an interpolation. The textual history is one of the most intriguing of any biblical passage. This article reviews that history, examines possible reasons for the passage’s inclusion or exclusion from John’s Gospel, engages discussion on the issue of its canonicity, and gives suggestions for how today’s pastors might relate to the story in their preaching.
A Theological Heritage For New Evangelicalism And Its Social Justice Focus, Kenley Hall
A Theological Heritage For New Evangelicalism And Its Social Justice Focus, Kenley Hall
Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)
Based on a review of relevant literature, this article will look at this emerging submovement within evangelicalism that researchers are referring to as “New Evangelicals” and its expanding social consciousness. Then the article will address an issue I believe is of critical importance: a likely theological and historical heritage for New Evangelicalism that can serve as a theological resource and even connection between them and the larger evangelical narrative.
