Influence Of Disturbance On Greater Sage-Grouse Habitat Selection In Southern Utah, Erica P. Hansen
Influence Of Disturbance On Greater Sage-Grouse Habitat Selection In Southern Utah, Erica P. Hansen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; sage-grouse) is a species of conservation concern that occupies sagebrush-dominated (Artemisia spp.) landscapes across the western United States and southern Canada. The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) reviewed the status of the sage-grouse in September 2015 and determined that it did not warrant protection under the Endangered Species Act due to collaborative efforts between numerous public and private stakeholders. However, this decision hinged on federal and state commitments to continue science-based management of sagebrush habitats. As human development increases across the west, there is an increasing need for understanding …
Computational Chemistry Of Non-Covalent Interaction And Its Application In Chemical Catalysis, Vincent De Paul Nzuwah Nziko
Computational Chemistry Of Non-Covalent Interaction And Its Application In Chemical Catalysis, Vincent De Paul Nzuwah Nziko
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Known to be weaker than conventional covalent bonds, non-covalent bonds, especially hydrogen bond, has shown to be of great importance in molecular structures such as DNA, RNA, proteins and other organic frameworks. In this dissertation, we looked at non-covalent interactions other than the hydrogen bond. Replacement of the bridging hydrogen atom in a typical hydrogen bond by other atoms such a halogen, chalcogen and tetrel lead to the formation of interactions which are comparable in strength to the hydrogen bond. Unlike the hydrogen bond which arises mainly from electrostatics, these unconventional interactions mostly result from induction. Besides studying the fundamentals …
The Role Of Gpr84 In Medium-Chain Saturated Fatty Acid Taste Transduction, Yan Liu
The Role Of Gpr84 In Medium-Chain Saturated Fatty Acid Taste Transduction, Yan Liu
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The prevalence of overweight or obese in adults has nearly doubled during the past two decades, and obesity increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and even some types of cancer. One of the factors closely linked with the obesity epidemic is overconsumption of dietary fat. Accumulating evidence has supported the existence of the "taste of fat", and more and more studies have focused on identifying the mechanisms of fatty acid detection by gustatory system. In this study, I showed for the first time that medium-chain saturated fatty acids (MCFAs) were able to activate taste cells isolated from mice, and …
Exploiting Self-Organization In Bioengineered Systems: A Computational Approach, Delin Davis
Exploiting Self-Organization In Bioengineered Systems: A Computational Approach, Delin Davis
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Bio-reactors, also known as microbial factories are used extensively to produce various industrially valuable products. However, scalability and stability of these factories are limited as it is difficult to deliver nutrients and extract product and waste from a large system. Current solution approaches explore changes in the physical configuration of the bio-reactors. Inspired from the nutrient delivery mechanisms of large organisms in nature, this work studies the possibilities of exploiting self-organizing bio-engineered cells which are capable of organizing into a vessel network to support the producer cells in the factory.
Primary goal of this dissertation is to design a proof-of-concept …
"Reasonably Bright Girls": Theorizing Women's Agency In Technological Systems Of Power, Emily January Petersen
"Reasonably Bright Girls": Theorizing Women's Agency In Technological Systems Of Power, Emily January Petersen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A woman’s experience in the workplace is an inductive process into a technological, hierarchical, and often male-dominated system. This study examines how female practitioners in technical and professional communication confront the technological system of the workplace. I trace the forces that contribute to the hierarchy and power struggles women face, I present how they claim authority and agency within such hierarchical and technological systems, and I show how these experiences can lead to activism and advocacy. In addition, my findings suggest that some women leave the workplace altogether in favor of less structured and more innovative ways of communicating about …

The Effect Of Weight On The Perceptions Of And Attitudes Toward Individuals With Anorexia Nervosa, Allison E. White
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A large body of research has shown that stigmatizing attitudes toward individuals with mental illness are widespread and prevalent. Fewer studies have focused on stigma toward eating disorders, in general, and even less have focused on the stigma of anorexia nervosa (AN), specifically. Preliminary research indicates that AN may be both stigmatizing and admired, but the factors contributing to the perception of AN has not been adequately studied. To date, researchers have yet to examine the role of body size in the perception of and attitudes toward individuals with AN. By showing participants one of three female figures varying only …

Migratory Waterbird Ecology At A Critical Staging Area, Great Salt Lake, Utah, Maureen G. Frank
Migratory Waterbird Ecology At A Critical Staging Area, Great Salt Lake, Utah, Maureen G. Frank
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Millions of birds use Great Salt Lake, Utah, during their migrations every year. While many of the birds use the shorelines and wetlands around Great Salt Lake, there are three migratory species that use the open waters of Great Salt Lake: Wilson's phalaropes (Phalaropus tricolor), red-necked phalaropes (Phalaropus lobatus), and eared grebes (Podiceps nigricollis). Eared grebes feed primarily on brine shrimp (Artemia fanciscana), while phalaropes are thought to consume brine flies (Ephydridae) and brackish-water aquatic invertebrates. Despite the reliance of phalaropes and eared grebes on the invertebrate prey of Great Salt Lake, …
Does Experience With Sagebrush In Utero And Early In Life Influence The Use Of Sagebrush By Sheep?, Ashley T. Longmore
Does Experience With Sagebrush In Utero And Early In Life Influence The Use Of Sagebrush By Sheep?, Ashley T. Longmore
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Learning from mother begins early in the developmental process and can have lifelong effects when it comes to forage preferences. Recent research suggests that mothers are a powerful and positive influence before birth. Pregnancy is not an incubation period buy a staging period for well-being and disease later in life. Better understanding the developmental processes which take place in utero and the effects they have later in life may help us create management plans that utilize grazing animals to their full potential as landscape manipulators.
Using in utero and early-life programming as a management tool is a relatively new concept, …

The genes and enzymes that were characterized are the minimal polyketide synthase, the ketoreductase that specifically acts on the ninth carbon, the first-ring aromatase, the subsequent ring cyclase, and two oxygenases. Also elucidated …
Microalgae Sorption Of Ten Individual Heavy Metals And Their Effects On Growth And Lipid Accumulation, Eric M. Torres
Microalgae Sorption Of Ten Individual Heavy Metals And Their Effects On Growth And Lipid Accumulation, Eric M. Torres
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study is to determine the potential microalgae have for being a heavy metal remediation tool. Heavy metals are naturally occurring elements that can be found inside the earth or on its surface. Typically, heavy metals are found naturally at low concentrations. However, through human activities, heavy metals are continually making their way to the surface and being concentrated. This happens largely through mining and manufacturing operations. For example, NiCd batteries produce waste containing nickel and cadmium, and paper manufacturing produces waste containing high levels of lead. As underdeveloped nations continue to industrialize and the world population …
Rapid Savanna Response To Changing Precipitation Intensity, Ryan S. Berry
Rapid Savanna Response To Changing Precipitation Intensity, Ryan S. Berry
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Climate change has the potential to cause large-scale changes in plant growth, biodiversity, and biosphere-climate feedbacks. A pervasive aspect of climate change is that as the atmosphere warms, precipitation events are likely to become less frequent but more intense, because warmer air can hold more water. Larger precipitation events can be expected to change plant productivity and community composition, particularly in semiarid ecosystems such as savannas. Savannas are of particular interest because they are spatially expansive at the global scale, they are important to humans for food production, and they are known to be sensitive to changes in soil water …
Control Of Large Stands Of Phragmites Australis In Great Salt Lake, Utah Wetlands, Chad R. Cranney
Control Of Large Stands Of Phragmites Australis In Great Salt Lake, Utah Wetlands, Chad R. Cranney
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Phragmites (common reed) is a non-native, invasive perennial grass from Eurasia that is taking over wetlands across North America. In Utah, Phragmites has expanded to cover tens of thousands of acres in and around the Great Salt Lake (GSL). The GSL and its associated wetlands are recognized regionally and hemispherically as an important bird area (IBA) that provide critical habitat for a wide variety of wetland dependent birds. The invasion and expansion of Phragmites has replaced many of the high quality habitats these avian populations rely on. This research aimed to determine the most effective methods to control Phragmites and …
Effects Of Environmental Water Rights Purchases On Dissolved Oxygen, Stream Temperature, And Fish Habitat, Nathaniel R. Mouzon
Effects Of Environmental Water Rights Purchases On Dissolved Oxygen, Stream Temperature, And Fish Habitat, Nathaniel R. Mouzon
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Degraded water quality has reduced aquatic species abundance and survivability in Nevada’s Walker River. Low instream flows and increased nutrients affect native fish populations through high daily stream temperatures and low nightly dissolved oxygen concentrations. Increasing streamflow, through environmental water purchases, may improve water quality and enhance habitat for native fish species, such as Lahontan cutthroat trout. This study uses River Modeling System, a computer model, to estimate streamflows, stream temperatures, and dissolved oxygen concentrations in the Walker River. Streamflow increases are simulated to determine potential improvements to high water temperatures and low dissolved oxygen concentrations, enabling the prioritization of …

Socialization Of Respeto In Immigrant Mexican Families, Marsha Tafoya
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Respeto is a cultural value considered to be essential in Latina/o families. Latina/o parents endorse respeto as being an important to teaching to their children. Mental health professionals argue that it is important to understand cultural values in delivering appropriate and relevant services to ethnic and culturally diverse clients. Some experts argue that such focus on cultural context also improves the effectiveness of interventions. The current study examined the cultural value of respeto in immigrant Mexican parents with a child between 4 and 9 years of age. Two scales were developed to examine the behavioral displays of respeto in boys …
Assessing Plant Community Structure In The Upper Las Vegas Wash Conservation Transfer Area, Nevada: The Influence Of Biotic And Abiotic Variables, Amy A. Croft
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Ecological communities are complex, the structure of which is composed of interactions between multiple community characteristics and the abiotic and biotic factors shaping them. Because of this complexity, ecological studies are generally limited in scope and size, often dissecting communities into their component parts to examine them piece by piece. While this might be the most practical method to study communities, this approach often neglects other characteristics that, with their inclusion, would provide a more complete picture of community ecology. The studies described in this dissertation were conducted in an effort to synthesize the complexity that is inherent in ecological …

Student Satisfaction At Utah State University Regional Campuses, Taylor K. Adams
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This research examined the difference between what undergraduate students at Utah State University (USU) regional campus locations perceive as important to their education and how satisfied students are with those education-related priorities. As institutions offer more distance education coursework, enrollment of nontraditional students is increasing. However, few studies examine satisfaction, which is a proven predictor of retention, of the student population described in this study.
The results of this study showed the highest discrepancies between priorities and satisfaction of undergraduate students at USU related to academic advising, course scheduling and registration; and finances including student fees, tuition, and financial aid …
Relationships Between Riparian Vegetation, Hydrology, Climate And Disturbance Across The Western United States, Nathaniel Hough-Snee
Relationships Between Riparian Vegetation, Hydrology, Climate And Disturbance Across The Western United States, Nathaniel Hough-Snee
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Flow regime, the magnitude, duration and timing of streamflow, controls the development of floodplain landforms on which riparian vegetation communities assemble. Streamflow scours and deposits sediment, structures floodplain soil moisture dynamics, and transports propagules. Flow regime interacts with environmental gradients like climate, land-use, and biomass-removing disturbance to shape riparian plant distributions across landscapes. These gradients select for groups of riparian plant species with traits that allow them to establish, grow, and reproduce on floodplains – riparian vegetation guilds. Here I ask, what governs the distributions of groups of similar riparian plant species across landscapes? To answer this question, I identify …
Spider Aggregate Glue Sequence Characterization And Expression, Kyle Berg
Spider Aggregate Glue Sequence Characterization And Expression, Kyle Berg
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Orb-weaving spiders create a glue which is secreted onto the web to capture and retain insects. This glue is made from aggregate protein. Aggregate glue is sticky when wet and can stretch far when pulled at slow speeds, and pull back with a greater force if pulled at high speeds which helps it achieve its purpose as the adhesive that keeps insects in the web. These features also make it an attractive target for applications such as a surgical glue or underwater adhesive. Unfortunately, very little is known about the aggregate glue gene, and knowledge of the genetic sequence is …

Stable Isotopes And The Ecology And Physiology Of Reptiles, Andrew M. Durso
Stable Isotopes And The Ecology And Physiology Of Reptiles, Andrew M. Durso
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
When animals don’t have enough food, they have to “choose” between “spending” their limited energy on themselves or on their offspring. Biologists think that reptiles can make this choice quickly in response to different environments. But, it can be hard to study these choices because it is hard to convert between, for example, the number of eggs laid and the speed of healing a wound. By using stable isotope chemistry, we can collect more detailed and comparable information about how lizards and other animals spend their limited resources than with any other method. For example, lizards in the wild have …
Revegetation Of Bulrushes Bolboschoenus Maritimus, Schoenoplectus Acutus, And S. Americanus In Great Salt Lake Wetlands: Seed Biology And Influence Of Environmental Factors On Rhizomes, James Marty
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A primary goal of ecological restoration is to establish desirable plant species. This goal is particularly important following the removal of invasive plants. Understanding biological characteristics of plant species important to revegetation is crucial to plant establishment. In the globally important Great Salt Lake (GSL) wetlands, native habitat-forming bulrushes Bolboschoenus maritimus, Schoenoplectus acutus, and S. americanus are frequently displaced by the invasive grass Phragmites australis. Bulrush seeds require very specific germination conditions and are also dormant, therefore they do not germinate consistently even when exposed to appropriate germination conditions. Additionally, wetland environments are often associated with water …
Agricultural Nitrogen Management Affects Microbial Communities, Enzyme Activities, And Functional Genes For Nitrification And Nitrogen Mineralization, Yang Ouyang
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Improved understanding of nitrogen cycling in agriculture is essential for increasing fertilizer use efficiency and sustainable food production. The availability and mobility of nitrogen are largely determined by the processes of nitrogen mineralization and nitrification. Nitrification is mediated by ammonia oxidizing bacteria, ammonia oxidizing archaea, and nitrite oxidizing bacteria. Our understanding of the controls on the relative activity of these nitrifying organisms in soil is limited. A wide variety of soil microorganisms produce enzymes that mineralize nitrogen from organic matter, but we have limited knowledge about links between enzyme activity and the microbes that work in soil. The main objective …
