The first organized program in physical education appeared in American colleges at the University of Virginia between the years 1850 and 1860. The first public school program appeared somewhat later. Since these beginnings, school and college programs have advanced steadily, keeping pace with our advancement in the philosophy of education and biological science. At the present time, almost all schools include physical education as an element in the curriculum.

Of the cereal crops, barley (Hordeum sp.), a crop of economic importance, offers a superior opportunity for genetic studies. Its adaptation to wide varieties of conditions, with a wealth of easily differentiated characters and only seven pairs of chromosomes, the barley plant provides excellent material for linkage studies.

Wheat is one of the major crops of Utah and for more than 50 years farmers have been raising wheat on the dry lands of the state. The system they use is known as the alternate cropping or crop-follow system and consists of one year of crop alternating with one year of clean cultivation known as fallow.

A series of ponds in northern Utah supplied mainly by artesian water was poisoned with rotenone during 1949-50. Four hundred and seventy-three fish were obtained for a food habits study, and of these fish, 423, or 89 percent, had food in their stomachs. The species studied were largemouth bass, green sunfish, common bluegill, and black bullhead. Largemouth bass had the widest variety of diet throughout the year but also had the highest percentage of empty stomachs. Green sunfish and black bullhead had the least diverse food habits. Starter is the "heart" of the cheese making industry. Only by proper handling of starter can good quality cheese be made. The economic loss from contaminated starter may prove disastrous to a cheese plant if proper corrective measures are not taken.

Milk usually contains a variety of bacteria. Under plant conditions some of these bacteria get into the mother starter or bulk starter unless extreme caution is used. Comparatively little is known about how one organism influences another when grown in milk. This problem is important in the cheese industry.

The species examined in the family Centrarchidae were largemouth black bass, Micropterus salmoides (Lacepede), green sunfish, Lepomis cyanellus Rafinesque, and common bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque, together with black bullhead, Ameiurus melas (Rafinesque) of the family Ameriuridae. Specifically it is a report of the macroscopic food found in the stomachs of sub-adult and mature fish. Plant parasitic nematodes have long been known to cause extensive crop losses through reduced yields, shortened productive life, or lowered value of produce. The rood knot nematode, Heterodera marioni, is cosmopolitan. It destroys crops and causes economic losses equal to those of any other plant parasitic species. in 1948 this nematode caused an estimated loss to the carrot raising industry in Iron County, Utah of approximately $15,000. The Logan River, one of Utah's better trout streams, has carried more than its share of the increased fishing pressure of the past few years. Careful management of the drainage by the U.S. Forest Service has kept the Logan River free of serious water fluctuations and relatively unpolluted by silt and wastes. The only noticeable fluctuations in the stream is the annual runoff cycle which usually reaches its peak in May. Virus diseases of stone fruit orchards have existed in Utah for more than a quarter of a century and are seriously diminishing the peach and cherry fruit production. Western X of peach, rusty mottle of cherry, wilt and decline of cherry, and little cherry constitute the most economically important stone fruit virus diseases in Utah. Many orchards, particularly in Davis County, have 50 to 83 percent of the trees infected with one or more of the yellow-red viroses. Prior to the year 1913, there had been some schools at the Utah State Agricultural College that had had biological science, exact science, language and arts, and social science groups for the graduates to fill requirements in before they could graduate from these particular schools.

However, it was not until the year 1913 that all of the schools, with the exception of the engineering school, were required to make the students meet these basic group requirements.

This study was undertaken in an attempt to determine some of the factors which may influence the survival of Utah game farm-reared pheasants following their release into the wild. The survival of these birds is below the desired level after they are released, as is indicated by the low percentage taken by the sportsmen during the hunting season. In recent years the return from released game farm-reared pheasants is about 7 to 8 percent.¹ Consequently, if survival rate of these birds could be increased, more birds would be available to supplement the wild stock. In the year 1681, while observing his own excrement, Leeuwenhoek discovered and described certain forms of life which he called "animalcules" and which were verified later by workers in protozoology as Giardia lamblia, a protozoan parasite of the intestinal tract.
