An Economic Comparison Of Dairy Cattle Breeds In The Weber Milk Shed Of Utah, Edgar Andrew Hyer May 1942

An Economic Comparison Of Dairy Cattle Breeds In The Weber Milk Shed Of Utah, Edgar Andrew Hyer

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Comparison, of dairy breeds in most of the literature is concerned with listing numbers of cows in each breed, milk and, butterfat production and average butterfat test per cow. Table 1 shows the total distribution of dairy cattle throughout the United States and the relative distribution in the various areas. This table shows the wide difference in popularity of the various breeds in different areas. In the North Atlantic States the Holstein is definitely the most popular breed whereas dairymen in the South Atlantic States and in the South Central States prefer the Jersey breed.

A Study Of The Ring-Necked Pheasant (Phasianus Colchicus Torquatus Gmelin) In Northern Utah, William T. Mckean

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Purpose of Study. The ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus torquatus Gmelin) is well enough known to need no introduction. It is at present undoubtedly the most abundant and most important gallinaceous game bird in northern Utah. Its abundance and its occurrence in agricultural areas has stimulated much general interest. Yet, aside from two food habits studies, both conducted in Utah County, no intensive research has been made into its ecological relationships or its general life history in Utah.

In order to formulate sound management plans for the pheasant in Utah, the Utah Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit has felt the need …

A Taxonomic And Distributional Study Of Simuliidae Of Western United States, George S. Stains Jun 1941

A Taxonomic And Distributional Study Of Simuliidae Of Western United States, George S. Stains

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Simuliidae, usually called black-flies or buffalo gnats, are abundant both as individuals and species in many parts of the western United States. The present study of this family was undertaken (1) because of the extensive annoyance caused to livestock, wild life, and man by the blood-sucking females, (2) because certain disease pathogens are known to be transmitted during the feeding process, and (3) because the species and distribution of these economically important pests are so incompletely known in the West.

An Evaluation Of The Health And Physical Education Programs In The High Schools Of Utah, Israel C. Heaton May 1941

An Evaluation Of The Health And Physical Education Programs In The High Schools Of Utah, Israel C. Heaton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the past ten years there has been an increased evidence of the importance of health and physical education in the United States. Leaders in this field are attempting to establish physical education in its rightful place in the school curriculum. The Research Quarterly for October, 1936 says:

It (physical education) should be dignified by providing a definite curriculum content comparable to that in academic fields, as opposed to the traditional practice of merely giving a child exercise regardless of the medium envolved. (12, p.99)

The growth of health and physical education in Utah has been very slow. In 1908 …

The Isolation Of Some Nonsymbiotic Nitrogen Fixing Organisms Occurring In Some Utah Soils, Richard B. Johnson May 1941

The Isolation Of Some Nonsymbiotic Nitrogen Fixing Organisms Occurring In Some Utah Soils, Richard B. Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Plants require ten elements in appreciable quantity and several others in smaller amount for their continued and normal growth. Three of these necessary elements, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are most important because they occur in the soil in quantities which are usually small in proportion to that needed by the plants. Of these three, nitrogen is in most cases the limiting factor because of the ease with which it may be leached from the soil and comparatively large amount assimilated by plants. These factors coupled with the inhibiting high cost of artificially replacing it in the form of commercial fertilizers, …

Analysis Of Rocky Mountain Mule Deer Kill Records Of Five-Year Deer Removal From The Logan River Drainage Of Northern Utah, Wilmur Bartels May 1941

Analysis Of Rocky Mountain Mule Deer Kill Records Of Five-Year Deer Removal From The Logan River Drainage Of Northern Utah, Wilmur Bartels

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Checking stations operated during the deer hunting season serve a two-fold purpose. It has long been recognized that such inspection stations aid greatly in the enforcement of hunting laws through the detection of illegal practices, and in many cases have been set up with this as a primary purpose. A more far reaching objective, however, is the collection of information to aid in the solution of the problems of maintenance of the range and the deer herd, and determination of the quality and quantity of the deer removal.

Wool Scouring Tests In Utah, Alma C. Esplin May 1941

Wool Scouring Tests In Utah, Alma C. Esplin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Wool as it is shorn from the sheep, is known as grease wool. The first step in the manufacturing of wool is scouring, or removal of all grease and foreign matter. Within any given grade, as determined by length of staple and fineness of fiber, the yield of clean wool is the primary factor in determining the value of the original grease wool. The price of scoured or clean wool is multiplied by the percentage yield of clean wool to determine the value of the grease wool.

Sampling Studies In Morning Glory Roots, Lowell W. Rasmussen May 1941

Sampling Studies In Morning Glory Roots, Lowell W. Rasmussen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Farmers and agriculturalists have in recent years become more conscious of the seriousness of the weed problems. The solution of this problem is obviously the development of more efficient and less costly methods of eradication. Most pernicious weeds are propagated vegetatively by means of underground parts in which reserve food is stored as a source of energy in tiding the plant over winter and initiating spring growth each year. In order to get at the behavior of these perennial parts, it is necessary to resort to a study of root reserves. This involves information not only on the composition of …

Cambrian Stratigraphy In The Northern Wasatch Region, George Burke Maxey May 1941

Cambrian Stratigraphy In The Northern Wasatch Region, George Burke Maxey

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An exhaustive field study of the Cambrian stratigraphy of the northern Wasatch region indicates that in addition to the Blacksmith Fork section there are two complete and better exposed middle and upper sections. Several other good exposures of the lower Middle Cambrian section have been studied in detail. The Spence shale is found to be a member low in the Langston, not the basal member of the Ute. Relative ages of the Spence shale and Ptarmigania faunas have been determined. Other Cambrian faunal zones have been discovered and are discussed. Paleontologic evidence suggests that the Nounan formation is of Upper …

An Economic Study Of Coal Mine Taxation In Utah, A. Lemar Hendrickson May 1941

An Economic Study Of Coal Mine Taxation In Utah, A. Lemar Hendrickson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A discussion of the subject of coal mine taxation seems timely and should be of much practical interest in view of the present depressed condition in which the coal industry finds itself. Coal production has developed into one of Utah's most important industries from the standpoint of quantity, value, and associated employment. It has become vital to the economic stability and security of the state. Coal producers, however, have encountered serious economic difficulties during the past two decades. The task of building up profitable industrial activities is one thing, the job of protecting and maintaining them is another matter.

Zinc Relationships Of Some Utah Soils, Wilford Derby Laws Jr. May 1941

Zinc Relationships Of Some Utah Soils, Wilford Derby Laws Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Recent reports from many parts of the United States indicate that the so-called zinc-deficiency disease is wide spread. It affects some varieties of trees in some areas and all varieties in other areas, and occurs from Florida westward to the Pacific coast and northward to the Canadian line. Although the disease is more prevalent in trees, it is also known to affect annual plants.

A recent survey of Utah orchards shows a wide-spread occurrence of little-leaf, a zinc deficiency disease, in fruit trees. The disease was found to be common on the upper sandy soils between Ogden and Salt Lake …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Richmond lies on a rise of ground near the Wasatch range in the east central part of Cache Valley. In 1855 John Bair led a small party to the vicinity of Richmond to explore it. Four years later (1859) they returned and established homes. The community grew quite rapidly. In 1860 when Jesse V. Fox, territorial surveyor, made the first survey, 104 people claimed land. The first public building was a combination church and school house. A ditch connected with High Creek was built in 1860. In 1868 the village was incorporated with W. D. Hendricks as the first mayor. …

A Study Of The Physical Education Facilities And Programs In Three Southern Utah High Schools, Floyd Harrison Slater

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the field of physical education there has been formulated by leading physical education authorities an ideal program for use· in high schools, but this program cannot always be used in our high schools because of certain problems that are always present. However, we can adopt the ideal program and modify it to fit any situation that may arise in the various schools. The physical education program is an unstatic program. It is always changing with the changing philosophy of physical education.

Married Students On The U.S.A.C. Campus, Donald L. Taylor May 1941

Married Students On The U.S.A.C. Campus, Donald L. Taylor

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Marriage is an ancient rite. No one knows when it started or all the stages of its evolution. But it has survived and is today a main concern of the majority of people.

When the European colonist came to America, they had no desire to change their folkways and mores concerning the family. In spite of this, a type of family developed in America that is different from any of its European predecessors.

Relationship Between Size Of Farm Business And Labor Income On Utah Farms, Milton S. Folkman

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since the turn of the century there has been a trend within the State of Utah toward more and smaller farms. The original farm units taken up by the early settlers of this state have been divided and subdivided until Utah today has hundreds of uneconomical-sized farms too small to be operated profitably under their present organization.

A Survey Of Human Intestinal Protozoa Of Logan City And Vicinity, Robert B. Harrison May 1940

A Survey Of Human Intestinal Protozoa Of Logan City And Vicinity, Robert B. Harrison

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Parasitic protozoa of the intestinal tract of man were first observed by Anthony van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723), a Dutch microscopist. In the year 1681, while observing his own excrement, Leeuwenhoek discovered and described certain forms of life which he called "animalcules" and which were verified later by workers in protozoology as Giardia lamblia, a protozoan parasite of the intestinal tract. During the period preceding the later part of the 19th century many observations of the parasitic intestinal protozoa of men and lower animals were made and many species were classified. It wasn't, however, until the year 1875 that a protozoan …

A Comparison Of Transported With Non-Transported Pupils In The High Schools Of The Millard County School District, Golden P. Wright May 1940

A Comparison Of Transported With Non-Transported Pupils In The High Schools Of The Millard County School District, Golden P. Wright

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The transportation of pupils to and from our schools has grown by leaps and bounds during the past few years until now it has developed into an educational activity of major importance. The Utah school bus which collided with a freight train in November 1938 and carried 23 of its passengers to their death was but one of over 86,000 such motor vehicles in operation in the United States during the school year of 1938-1939. Approximately 4,000,000 school children rode these buses daily over school-bus routes that extended in excess of 1,000,000,000 miles. the annual expense for this transportation was …

The Development Of Equalization And Assessment In Utah With Special Reference To The Assessment Of Rural Lands In Cache County, Theodore R. Maughan May 1940

The Development Of Equalization And Assessment In Utah With Special Reference To The Assessment Of Rural Lands In Cache County, Theodore R. Maughan

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Uniformity of assessments and equity in the taxation of all tangible property within the state has long been the ideal of the people of Utah, yet the history of equalization and assessment is replete with the effective blocking - by pressure groups - of attainment of this ideal. Taxing officials, in general, and students of taxation, in particular, have repeatedly pointed out gross inequalities and rank injustices in our assessing system which should be corrected. But, selfish interest plus ignorance on the part of the taxpayer has permitted these abuses to remain in our taxing system. An accidental, hit-and-miss, guess …

A Study Of Bicameral And Unicameral State Legislative Systems, With Special Reference To Utah's Needs, Wendell Bryan Anderson May 1940

A Study Of Bicameral And Unicameral State Legislative Systems, With Special Reference To Utah's Needs, Wendell Bryan Anderson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Legislatures originated to advise and subsequently to curb autocrats who claimed to rule under Divine mandate. The people's struggle through the centuries to build a bulwark against oppression and tyranny is particularized by Sparta's Senate, Athens Council and Assembly of Four Hundred, Rome's Senate of Elders and Comitis Curiate, Charlemangne's Imperial Assembly, and Saxon England's Witenagamot. The archeotype of America's lawmaking bodies, nevertheless, is not found in Greece or Rome, but rather in the British Parliament as it was anciently composed.

Utah State Agricultural College Graduates Now Living In Other States, Robert Dawson Simpson May 1940

Utah State Agricultural College Graduates Now Living In Other States, Robert Dawson Simpson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This is a study of graduates of the Utah State Agricultural College who have left Utah and are now residing elsewhere. Inquiries by faculty members and interested alumni, as well as the writer's own interest in the subject of migration, prompted the organization of this study.

The immediate reason for the inquiry was an enlarging interest on the campus concerning the present whereabouts of graduates who have left the state. When present residence was ascertained, other questions arose. What kind of employment had migrating graduates secured? What major interests were had? What important voluntary public services are graduates rendering to …

Some Changes In State Educational Administration In Utah In Terms Of The Recommendations Of The Utah Survey Of 1926, Verland L. Christiansen May 1940

Some Changes In State Educational Administration In Utah In Terms Of The Recommendations Of The Utah Survey Of 1926, Verland L. Christiansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Inasmuch as this study is concerned primarily with state school administration and an educational survey concerned with administration, it appears proper to devote some attention to the evolution of these two things. The first consideration will be given to the development of state educational administration.

When grants were made by congress to the various states for educational purposes, the responsibilities of administration went to the states. The state administrative systems evolved as a natural process. Cubberley traces this development from the time the boards consisted of ex officio state officers entirely, through the time when school men were ex officio …

Engineering In Traffic Safety In Utah, Donald T. Hunter May 1940

Engineering In Traffic Safety In Utah, Donald T. Hunter

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Traffic safety involves accident-free movement of physical entities. It includes all means of transportation and is a function of mobility, an important variable affecting directly the mortality rate and increase of accidents. All transportation groups have coincidentally with or without increase of mobility been attempting to reduce accidents. Those notably succeeding are the shipping, railroad, and airline interests. The operating motor vehicle and pedestrian groups have failed conspicuously.

The early means of attaining a better degree of traffic safety in the motor vehicle and pedestrian groups were based on opinions, and though rational, were incomplete because of the dynamic and …

Certain Factors In Relation To The Present Occupational Status Of Former All-Day Students Of Vocational Agriculture In Utah, Mark Nichols May 1940

Certain Factors In Relation To The Present Occupational Status Of Former All-Day Students Of Vocational Agriculture In Utah, Mark Nichols

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Vocational agriculture had its birth in Utah rural high schools in the spring of 1918. It is a program for training present and future farmers for proficiency in agriculture. The instruction in Utah, as in most states, has been devoted to the training of all-day (high school) students.

Since 1918 considerably over one million dollars of federal, state and local funds have been expended for all-day instruction in vocational agriculture in Utah. The primary objective of the program is to train these boys to become farmers or farm leaders. From time to time the following questions have been asked: Do …

Comparison Of Various Types Of Milk Sampling Devices, William A. Hoskisson May 1940

Comparison Of Various Types Of Milk Sampling Devices, William A. Hoskisson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The importance of an accurate measurement of fat in milk deliveries is fully appreciated by most producers and plant operators. Since milk is purchased on a fat basis, the accuracy of the procedure used in sampling and testing the milk has often been questioned by both the buyer and seller.

A composite sample to be theoretically correct, should consist of aliquot portions of the milk shipments represented. Where aliquot portions are to be taken, a milk thief is commonly suggested. This device takes a vertical column of milk from the weigh tank. The idea is that the height of the …

The Relation Of Some Physical And Chemical Factors Of The Soil To The Productivity And Distribution Of Certain Waterfowl Food Plants At The Bear River Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, Grant Hortin Jensen May 1940

The Relation Of Some Physical And Chemical Factors Of The Soil To The Productivity And Distribution Of Certain Waterfowl Food Plants At The Bear River Migratory Waterfowl Refuge, Grant Hortin Jensen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Within the last few years several areas within the state of Utah have been and are being developed for the conservation of migratory birds. Of utmost importance in this respect is the management of these areas so as to obtain a sufficient supply of rood plants for use by water fowl. Previous work done at the Bear River Migratory Waterfowl Refuge shows that the productivity of aquatic rood plants, chiefly Potamogeton pectinatus L. and Ruppia maritima L. varies with different localities and that these differences could not be attributed to chemical conditions of the water, i.e., dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, and …

A Study To Determine The Factors Affecting Efficiency In Use Of Irrigation Water In Weber County, Utah. 1938, Archie L. Christiansen May 1940

A Study To Determine The Factors Affecting Efficiency In Use Of Irrigation Water In Weber County, Utah. 1938, Archie L. Christiansen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Utah has two major natural resources, land and water. Because these do not, when separated, have the same agricultural value as when used jointly by separation each loses much of its significance.
