A Study Of A Bacterial Cause Of The Late Gas Defect In Cheddar Cheese, Rulon A. Chappell May 1962

A Study Of A Bacterial Cause Of The Late Gas Defect In Cheddar Cheese, Rulon A. Chappell

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

More of the manufacturing milk purchased from Utah's dairy farms is used for the production of cheese than for any other product. Approximately eleven and one-half million pounds of cheese were produced in Utah in 1959, of which more than half was cheddar. Many problems are encountered in the production of A-grade cheddar cheese. One of the most important causes of the reduction in grade is the late gas defect which accounts for about 50 percent of the cheese grading below A-grade. To increase the percentage of A-grade cheddar cheese in Utah, the late gas problem should be solved. The …

A Price Analysis Of The Ogden And Los Angeles Livestock Markets For Slaughter And Feeder Cattle, 1956-1960, Jerald R. Barnard May 1962

A Price Analysis Of The Ogden And Los Angeles Livestock Markets For Slaughter And Feeder Cattle, 1956-1960, Jerald R. Barnard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

One of the major objectives of every farmer, rancher, or feedlot operator is that of trying to maximize profits by marketing their cattle for greatest net returns. For this reason, it is very important at which market the producer decides to sell his cattle. Local supply and demand conditions are constantly causing prices and price differentials between markets to fluctuate, making the decision of choosing the market which will yield the greatest net return rather difficult.

An Evaluation Of Social Stars, Regulars, Neglectees, And Isolates In Ability-Grouped And Random-Grouped Classrooms, Benjamin W. Standing May 1962

An Evaluation Of Social Stars, Regulars, Neglectees, And Isolates In Ability-Grouped And Random-Grouped Classrooms, Benjamin W. Standing

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Education in the United States attempts to present maximum opportunities for learning in a democratic atmosphere. Many great educators have sought means to accomplish this end. Today, because of the stimulating force of other nations, even greater pressure is being brought to bear to achieve these goals. The plan of grouping pupils according to their abilities has been presented as one way to facilitate learning.

Ability grouping is the assigning of pupils who are essentially alike to special grade levels and to parallel sections of the same grade. Although it may be thought that ability grouping is a new procedure, …

A Comparative Analysis Of The Effects Of Heterogeneous And Homogeneous Elementary School Grouping Practices On Selected Personality Variables, Clarence D. Swaner May 1962

A Comparative Analysis Of The Effects Of Heterogeneous And Homogeneous Elementary School Grouping Practices On Selected Personality Variables, Clarence D. Swaner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The relative advantages or disadvantages associated with the practice of grouping school children according to ability level has long been the subject of considerable discussion among educators. The general tendency has been for educators to divide into two camps: Those who expound the various merits of homogeneous grouping, and those who favor and support heterogeneous grouping practices. Less common, but acknowledged, are those educators who favor a combination of the two methods. Research dealing with the relative value of either method has usually been concerned with only one aspect of the problem--that of academic achievement. However, the efforts of several …

Ecology Of Spring Fed Salt-Marshes, Eric George Bolen May 1962

Ecology Of Spring Fed Salt-Marshes, Eric George Bolen

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Any marsh is a distinctive land-form of varied interest. To the agriculturist it is wasteland to be reclaimed; to the naturalist, a habitat of aesthetic value. To the ecologist, however, a marsh represents a complexity of vegetation under the influences of many and often inseparable factors. It becomes a place of challenging study.

A Study Of The Self-Selection Method Of Reading In The Sixth-Grade Of The Ephraim Elementary School, Elliot J. Arnoldson May 1962

A Study Of The Self-Selection Method Of Reading In The Sixth-Grade Of The Ephraim Elementary School, Elliot J. Arnoldson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

As educators have searched continuously for the best method to teach reading, numerous techniques have been advanced. Some of these techniques are comprised of basic elements in reading which are proven and used with much success and security on the part of the teacher. Others are tried, used, made popular for a short time and then are cast aside as in adequate teaching methods.

That learning to read is an individual matter no educator will deny. Nor is it controversial to say that, within each person's generalized reading ability, there exists unevennesses in skills development. Nor does anyone question that …

A Study Of Sprinkler Uniformity Evaluation Methods, Baha Dabbous May 1962

A Study Of Sprinkler Uniformity Evaluation Methods, Baha Dabbous

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The use of water in homes, on farms, by factories, and for recreational purposes has been increasing rapidly. Water use has doubled in the last three decades. By 1980, water use is expected to be double the current use. In arid and semi-arid regions, the practice of successful profit-yielding agriculture often depends on irrigation. Irrigation is, in turn, dependent upon a water supply which is limited. The highest possible efficiency should be maintained if maximum utilization of the available water resources for irrigation is desired. Sprinkler irrigation allows, among other things, high water application efficiencies with good distribution uniformities.

Selected Insecticides In The Control Of Invertebrates Possibly Associated With Avian Botulism, J. Larry Haddock May 1962

Selected Insecticides In The Control Of Invertebrates Possibly Associated With Avian Botulism, J. Larry Haddock

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Avian botulism or ''western duck sickness" has long been a major problem on duck marshes in the western part of the United States. This has been demonstrated to result from the ingestion of products of metabolism of bacterial cells of Clostridium botulinum type C. These products when ingested by waterfowl act as neurotoxins (Coburn, 1942). Studies have shown that many animal tissues are readily utilized as culture media by Cl. botulinum type C (Bell et al., 1955).

Since 1955 investigations have indicated a close relation between the occurrence of avian botulism and invertebrate population levels. It is thought that when …

The Effects Of Radium On Certain Goldfish Blood Constituents And Organs, D. Wayne Linn May 1962

The Effects Of Radium On Certain Goldfish Blood Constituents And Organs, D. Wayne Linn

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Background radioactivity from radium has long existed in ground and surface waters of the United States, but in the last 15 years radium has become a consequential unnatural contaminant of waters (Coulomb, 1955; Rone, 1952; Schlundt, 1910; Scott and Barker, 1956; Scott, 1961; and Tsivoglou et al., 1958). The onset of the atomic age initiated the increased processing of uranium ore for its uranium content. Radium is a daughter product and a by-product of uranium ore and its purification (Glasstone, 1958; and Tsivoglou et al., 1958). The uranium refinery wastes are released into streams in which all forms of aquatic …

The couples were selected from the geographic areas of Enterprise and Logan, Utah, and Preston, Idaho. Respondents consisted of couples who had at least one child, but no children beyond high school age. Their religiosity was determined by the bishop of the L.D.S. Ward of which they were a member. The bishop considered such factors as attendance at regularly scheduled church meetings and contributions made in the form of tithes in determining whether a couple was considered active or inactive. The sample consisted …

Differences In Frustration Reactions Of Nursery School Children, Sharon Marshall May 1962

Differences In Frustration Reactions Of Nursery School Children, Sharon Marshall

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The study of frustration has been of interest to various people including psychiatrists, psychologists, and educators for a number of years. These people have been interested in frustration because the complexity of our modern life has involved so many frustrating experiences. Frustration has been defined by Dollard (8, p. 7) as "an interference with the occurrence of an instigated goal response at its proper time." Ruch (21, p. 151) defined frustration as "the denial or thwarting by some obstacle which lies between a need and its goal." These two definitions are in essence identical. The average person has many obstacles …

Factors Affecting The Waterfowl Hunter Utilization And The Waterfowl Kill At The Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, 1960-61, Stephen V. Goddard

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In 1960 there were 1,955, 000 waterfowl hunters in the United States. These hunters spent $89,431, 000 (an average of $45.74 per individual) and 15,158, 000 hunter days in the field. The hunting population will increase 35 percent by 1975 (Anonymous, 1960).

The large increase in hunters will bring a proportional increase in the demand for places to hunt. Many states face the problem of providing enough public hunting for such an army of sportsmen. Studies by Kozlik (1958) in California, Gordinier (1957) and Friley (1959) in Michigan, and Bednarik (1957, 1961) in Ohio point out some of the problems …

Some Factors Influencing The Response Of Halogeton Glomeratus To 2,4-Dichloropheloxyacetic Acid, Eugene H. Cronin

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Halogeton glomeratus (M. Bieb) C. A. Mey. was introduced into the cold desert of North America sometime prior to 1934. The first collections were made near Wells, Nevada in 1935 (Zappetini, 1953) and the plant now occupies in excess of 10 million acres. The plant is poisonous to livestock. The toxic substances in halogeton are sodium and potassium oxalates which account for 17 to 30 percent of its dry weight, depending on the time of year it is collected (Dye, 1956, and Williams, 1960a). Since the plant is a pioneer invader on disturbed sites in the salt-desert shrub vegetation of …

Educational Grouping And Students' Self Concept, John N. Giboney May 1962

Educational Grouping And Students' Self Concept, John N. Giboney

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The question of ability grouping in education has achieved prominence, especially in recent years. Much of the emphasis placed on grouping students according to ability rather than chronological age is a product of modern times and progressive education. Although not accepted by all educators, there is a definite movement toward such a procedure in public schools today. It is held by the advocates of ability grouping that students will benefit more in a situation where they proceed at a rate prescribed by their ability rather than a hypothetical average or norm. Several well-controlled studies (3, 33, 44) have shown that …

Grouping students with in the school setting has long been a concern to all those associated with the educative process. Much investigation has been devoted to the position of level of aspiration as influential motive forces for educational, occupational, and social achievement. Many avenues of grouping have been investigated and some very thoroughly. However, research concerning grouping in relation to level of aspiration in the school setting appears to be extremely limited. This study is designed to further investigate this issue. It might be said that this study consists of essentially two phases: (1) the development of instruments for measuring …

Post-Harvest Storage Studies With Selected Fruits, Amrik Singh Dhaliwal

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

It has been estimated that one-fourth of the fresh fruits harvested are never consumed because of spoilage. This spoilage amounts to many thousands of tons of fruits which are valued annually at several million dollars. Several factors are responsible for the post-harvest spoilage of fruits, namely, pathological, physiological, and mechanical.

Men in the past have used various methods to control pathological spoilage of foods. The recent development of nuclear radiation, antibiotics, fungicides, and packaging films provides new methods for prolonging the shelf-life of many fruits. These may prove important in countries like India where refrigeration facilities are not readily available …

The Study Of The Effect Of Various Methods Of Harvesting And Curing On The Color And Viability Of Lima Bean Seed, S. G. Date

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many seedsmen have observed that lima bean seed of a variety like Early Thorogreen, which has green cotyledons, often fades in color during harvesting. This fading of color is known as bleaching. A variety which has green cotyledon and hence green seed, should retain this green color during harvest. Bleached seeds are likely to emerge slowly when planted. Also the final field stand from a planting of bleached seed is likely to be poor.

A Comparison Of Cock Pheasant Harvests Among Areas Having Different Hunting Pressures, Cache County, Utah, James C. Bartonek May 1962

A Comparison Of Cock Pheasant Harvests Among Areas Having Different Hunting Pressures, Cache County, Utah, James C. Bartonek

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Parsons (1953) found Utah's posted hunting unit system regulated hunting pressures over much of the state's pheasant range. He found inequalities of hunting pressure among the posted hunting units because of their individualistic methods used to determine the number of hunting permits to be sold. Utah State Department of Fish and Game personnel recommend the number of permits to be sold by the hunting unit; but often, the hunting unit officers use the desired level of hunting pressure, size of cock harvest, and revenue from permit sales as decisive factors. By regulating hunting pressure on their own lands the posted …

Age, however, is beyond the influence of mankind; therefore, it is important to understand the effect of age on milk and butter-fat production.

European Economic Integration And American Business Strategy, Paul Andrykowsky May 1962

European Economic Integration And American Business Strategy, Paul Andrykowsky

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The term “economic integration” recently has been used for various forms of economic cooperation. Many writers have tried to give a working definition of it, but a review of the literature does not show any generally accepted definition. The term is used for several degrees of economic cooperation; harmonization; trade agreements; tariff-agreements; advanced forms of cooperation like tariff communities, customs communities, customs unions, free trade areas, common markets, monetary unions; and complete economic unions. Integration furthermore has been split into sector and total integration and has been determined by various criteria. Thus, it is very difficult to judge where economic …

Forage Yield And Plant Stand Intensity Of Nine Alfalfa Varieties In Relation To Nine Rates Of Seeding And Bacterial Wilt Resistance, Hamid Auda

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In growing alfalfa it is important to obtain a good initial stand. However, it is difficult to predict the exact amount of seed necessary to insure a good stand.

There are about 220,000 seeds in 1 pound of alfalfa seed, or enough for four to five seeds per square foot at the rate of 1 pound of seed per acre. If every seed should grow, 2 to 3 pounds of seed per acre would be sufficient for a good stand.

However, there are many hazards. Some seeds are not viable, and others are planted too deep or too shallow to …

An Economic Study Of Alternative Methods Of Obtaining Dairy Herd Replacements In Northern Utah, 1961, J'Wayne Mcarthur

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Dairying ranked second in producing farm income in the state of Utah in 1929 (II). Twenty-two and two tenths percent of cash receipts from the sale of agricultural products came from dairying. Beef enterprises were the only larger source of farm income in the state, with 24.7 per cent of the total cash receipts. Because of the importance of dairying in the state, much work has been done to provide dairymen with information that will enable them to obtain a higher net return from dairying.
