Effect Of Tannin-Containing Legume Hays On Enteric Methane Emissions And Nitrogen Partitioning In Beef Cattle, Elizabeth K. Stewart
Effect Of Tannin-Containing Legume Hays On Enteric Methane Emissions And Nitrogen Partitioning In Beef Cattle, Elizabeth K. Stewart
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Cattle are responsible for greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. In particular, the cow-calf phase of production accounts for approximately 80 percent of the total beef production system greenhouse gas emissions. Tannins are chemical compounds found in certain forages and they have the potential to help reduce these negative environmental impacts. Thus, given that the cow-calf phase often relies on feeding hay, feeding tannin-containing hays may represent a significant mitigation practice.
With my MS program, I sought to explore whether tannin-containing hays fed to mother cows and heifers influence methane and nitrogen emissions relative to …

Patterns Of Threatened Vertebrates Based On Trophic Level, Diet, And Biogeography, Shaley A. Valentine
Patterns Of Threatened Vertebrates Based On Trophic Level, Diet, And Biogeography, Shaley A. Valentine
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Humans have indirectly and directly contributed to the extinction of over 500 species within the past 500 years, a rate far higher than we have seen in the past. The high extinction rate and the fact that 18% of vertebrates may become extinct within the next century have pushed Earth into a biodiversity crisis. Understanding what makes species more at risk of extinction is needed to protect Earth’s biodiversity.
Generally, it is expected that predators have greater extinction risk than omnivores and herbivores because predators are larger in body size, depend on other animal species for food, need large home …
Planning For Active Transportation In The Western United States: An Alternative Future For Cache Valley, Utah, Stephanie A. Tomlin
Planning For Active Transportation In The Western United States: An Alternative Future For Cache Valley, Utah, Stephanie A. Tomlin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Mobility in the western U.S. is defined primarily by the private automobile. Since the conclusion of WWII, the private automobile has become readily available to the public, and as a result, has heavily influenced the design of our modern cities in the west. In recent years the connections between high motor vehicle use and rising obesity rates, crumbling road infrastructure, and deteriorating air quality have caused city officials to reexamine the transportation systems of the west. One solution advocates, city officials, and planning professionals have begun examining is active transportation (walking, cycling, and public transit). Research suggests that a robust …

Why Do You Go To University? Outcomes Associated With Student Beliefs About The Purposes Of A University Education, Mitchell C. Colver
Why Do You Go To University? Outcomes Associated With Student Beliefs About The Purposes Of A University Education, Mitchell C. Colver
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Students enter the realm of higher education with a wide variety of beliefs about the purposes of attending university, which often relate to or reveal their various motivations for pursuing a post-secondary education. Research demonstrates that some student motivations align more fully with intrinsic factors, such as the love of learning or quest for excellence, while other student motivations align with extrinsic factors, such as vocational preparedness and monetary incentives (Vallerand et al., 1989). Using a Bourdieusienne lens, this study sought to place these student motivations in the larger sociocultural context and argue for greater opportunities for democratic equity in …
Electron Flow And Management In Living Systems: Advancing Understanding Of Electron Transfer To Nitrogenase, Rhesa N. Ledbetter
Electron Flow And Management In Living Systems: Advancing Understanding Of Electron Transfer To Nitrogenase, Rhesa N. Ledbetter
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Nitrogen is a critical nutrient for growth and reproduction in living organisms. Although the Earth's atmosphere is composed of ~80% nitrogen gas (N2), it is inaccessible to most living organisms in that form. Biological nitrogen fixation, however, can be performed by microbes that harbor the enzyme nitrogenase. This enzyme converts N2 into bioavailable ammonia (NH3) and accounts for at least half of the "fixed" nitrogen on the planet. The other major contributor to ammonia production is the industrial Haber-Bosch process. While the Haber-Bosch process has made significant advances in sustaining the global food supply through …

Personal Growth Following The Challenge Of Becoming A New Parent While Working As A Mental Health Clinician: A Narrative Study, Amie L. Smith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Becoming a new parent can cause both immense joy and immense stress that leads to increases and decreases in a new parent’s feeling of life satisfaction. In addition, working as a mental health clinician is a frequently challenging career. Given that many clinicians also become parents while working during the course of their careers, it is surprising that there is not more research on the experience of clinicians who become new parents. More research is needed to find out how people balance the stresses of new parenthood and their emotionally challenging jobs. There is some research on “stress-related growth” that …

Pharmacologically Induced Meiosis Apomeiosis Interconversions In Boechera, Arabidopsis And Vigna, Lei Gao
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Apomixis is a clonal propagation method that produces offspring identical to the mother plant. With this feature, superior traits could be maintained over generations. However, our knowledge about apomixis is limited. In this study, we analyzed several apomictic Boechera embryologically to learn the details of apomixis. Meanwhile, we designed chemical treatments to successfully induce sex in apomictic plants and apomixis in sexual plants. Our experiments suggest that sex and apomixis coexist in plants and that sexual and apomictic reproduction are switchable by treating with specific chemicals.

Quantifying Dominant Heat Fluxes In An Arctic Alaskan River With Mechanistic River Temperature Modeling, Tyler V. King
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Temperatures strongly affect physical, chemical, and biological processes in rivers and streams. The processes that influence river temperatures are known across most geographic regions, but the relative importance varies significantly. Little is known about what controls water temperature Arctic rivers, limiting our ability to understand the impacts of climate change. This dissertation addresses this knowledge gap by incorporating field measurements with river temperature modeling to estimate the relative importance of key factors that affect Arctic river temperatures. Results indicate that shortwave radiation (e.g., sunlight) and net longwave radiation are significant throughout an Arctic watershed in all flow conditions. In areas …

Putting Weight In Context: Acceptance And Commitment Therapy (Act) Guided Self-Help For Weight Self-Stigma, Sarah A. Potts
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Obesity is a serious public health issue within the U.S. and minimal long-term success is found with standard behavioral weight-loss treatments. Typical weight-loss interventions do not acknowledge psychological factors, such as weight-related stigma, which may play a role in the development and maintenance of poor coping behaviors, such as unhealthy eating patterns. Individuals who are obese may often experience weight-related stigma present in society and are ultimately at risk for weight self-stigma, which is related to poor health behaviors and increased psychological distress. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), can be effective for treating numerous mental health presentations, might also be …

Invasive Phragmites Australis Management In Great Salt Lake Wetlands: Context Dependency And Scale Effects On Vegetation And Seed Banks, Christine B. Rohal
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Invasive plants can outcompete native plants, replacing diverse plant communities with monocultures, which can negatively impact the whole ecosystem. One invasive plant, Phragmites australis, has invaded wetlands across North America. In Utah’s Great Salt Lake, it has greatly reduced the area of native plants that are important habitat for migratory birds. Here we describe experiments that assess multiple treatments for Phragmites removal and evaluate the return of native plants after Phragmites management. The treatments were applied to Phragmites patches at two scales (small 1/4-acre plots and large 3-acre plots) and across multiple sites to evaluate how patch size and …

Impacts Of Phragmites Australis Management On Wetland Plant Community Recovery, Seedbank Composition, And The Physical Environment In The Chesapeake Bay, Eric L. G. Hazelton
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Biological invasions have adverse economic, cultural, and ecological effects worldwide. Among the most impactful in North America is the invasion of Phragmites australis (Phragmites), a large-scale clonal grass that rapidly colonizes wetlands. Phragmites crowds out native plants and alters habitat for native fauna. In doing so, Phragmites also alters human access to water resources and has adverse economic effects, including decreasing property value, inhibiting recreational use, and limiting populations of game species.
The efforts described in this dissertation are a component of a large, multidisciplinary effort to better understand the anthropogenic stressors to Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, at the …

In the western US, FIA measures 10% of the plots each year to report on status, trends, and sustainability of our Nation’s forests. However, this 10 year cycle misses …
Feature Screening Of Ultrahigh Dimensional Feature Spaces With Applications In Interaction Screening, Randall D. Reese
Feature Screening Of Ultrahigh Dimensional Feature Spaces With Applications In Interaction Screening, Randall D. Reese
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Data for which the number of predictors exponentially exceeds the number of observations is becoming increasingly prevalent in fields such as bioinformatics, medical imaging, computer vision, And social network analysis. One of the leading questions statisticians must answer when confronted with such “big data” is how to reduce a set of exponentially many predictors down to a set of a mere few predictors which have a truly causative effect on the response being modelled. This process is often referred to as feature screening. In this work we propose three new methods for feature screening. The first method we propose (TC-SIS) …

Tackling Choke Point Induced Performance Bottlenecks In A Near-Threshold Gpgpu, Tahmoures Shabanian
Tackling Choke Point Induced Performance Bottlenecks In A Near-Threshold Gpgpu, Tahmoures Shabanian
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Over the last decade, General Purpose Graphics Processing Units (GPGPUs) have garnered a substantial attention in the research community due to their extensive thread-level parallelism. GPGPUs provide a remarkable performance improvement over Central Processing Units (CPUs), for highly parallel applications. However, GPGPUs typically achieve this extensive thread-level parallelism at the cost of a large power consumption. Consequently, Near-Threshold Computing (NTC) provides a promising opportunity for designing energy-efficient GPGPUs (NTC-GPUs). However, NTC-GPUs suffer from a crucial Process Variation (PV)-inflicted performance bottleneck, which is called Choke Point. Choke Point is defined as one or small group of gates which is affected by …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The main goal of this research is to develop algorithms to facilitate the use of a new type of antenna, called multifunctional reconfigurable antenna (MRA). Traditional antennas have fixed radiation properties which cannot be changed to adapt to different environments. To solve this problem, MRAs, which can dynamically change its operation frequency, radiation patter, and polarization, has gained a significant interest recently. Such antennas can support multiple radio access technologies with different sets of operational requirements. Reconfigurable antennas are considered smart antennas. The efficient use of smart antennas requires efficient and smart underlying algorithms. This dissertation focuses on developing efficient …
