Comparison Of Topographic Surveying Techniques In Streams, Sara G. Bangen
Comparison Of Topographic Surveying Techniques In Streams, Sara G. Bangen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) Fish and Wildlife Program (FWP) mitigates impacts, including mortality, from hydroelectric dams in the Columbia River Basin for ESA-listed salmon and steelhead populations and other species of special concern. Given the extensive economic resources invested in mitigation and the incredible diversity of in-stream habitat across the Columbia River basin, questions have arisen about which sampling strategies are most tractable across the entire Columbia River Watershed, but also produce datasets that allow researchers to answer meaningful questions about salmonid populations and trends in habitat. In response to these issues, the NOAA Integrated Status and Effectiveness Monitoring …

A video is a growing stream of unstructured data that significantly increases the amount of information transmitted and stored on the Internet. For example, every minute YouTube users upload 72 GB of information. Some of the best applications for video analysis include the monitoring of activities in defense and security scenarios such as the autonomous planes that collect video and images at reduced risk and the surveillance cameras in public places like traffic lights, airports, and schools.
Some of the challenges in the analysis of video correspond to implement complex operations such as searching of activities, understanding of scenes, and …
Improvement In Computational Fluid Dynamics Through Boundary Verification And Preconditioning, David E. Folkner
Improvement In Computational Fluid Dynamics Through Boundary Verification And Preconditioning, David E. Folkner
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis focuses on improvements to numerical simulation of fluid dynamic problems. A study of computation fluid dynamics is done to improve simulation accuracy and efficiency. Accurate and fast results are the desire of simulation techniques. Two main improvements to current CFD methods are implemented and tested: a new boundary condition verification procedure and a new preconditioning technique.
First, mathematical code verification methods are extended to also include boundary conditions that can often drive fluid dynamics problems. A new framework is created to implement a variety of desirable boundaries. With this framework, a robust verification procedure for these boundaries is …

A Qualitative And Evaluative Study On Recruiting And Retaining Students In College Computer Science Programs, Matthew Gardner
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Computer science is a discipline that is increasing in importance and value in our society, yet we are still failing to graduate a sufficient number of students to keep up with the demand required in the United States economy. We research several ways to retain students. We also discuss ways to increase students’ interest in the major, i.e., those who normally would not know about computer science. We discuss ways to increase female participation as well as overall participation in the major.

The Effects Of Abstraction On Best Nblock First Search, Justin R. Redd
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Search is an important aspect of Artificial Intelligence. Efficiently searching for solutions to large problems is important. One way to scale search large in problems quickly is to divide the work between multiple processors. There are many ways to divide this work using abstractions. This thesis examines the previous way this has been done in the past and introduces other ways to more efficiently divide the work and search in parallel.

Carrier Dynamics In Ingaas/Gaas Quantum Dots Excited By Femtosecond Laser Pulses, Kripa Nidhan Chauhan
Carrier Dynamics In Ingaas/Gaas Quantum Dots Excited By Femtosecond Laser Pulses, Kripa Nidhan Chauhan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In semiconductors, everything is becoming smaller day by day; quantum dots are the smallest nanomaterials available today. Typical sizes of these quantum dots are in the range of 5 to 30 nm in diameter. Variations in size changes many material properties, such as electrical and nonlinear optical properties, making them very different from bulk semiconductors. The size of the QDs results in new quantum phenomena, which yield some extraordinary properties. Material properties change dramatically because quantum effects arise from the confinement of electrons and holes in the material. Hence, semiconductor quantum dots play an important role in designing new devices …
Nutritional And Economic Analysis Of Small-Scale Agriculture In Imbabura, Ecuador, Jake Erickson
Nutritional And Economic Analysis Of Small-Scale Agriculture In Imbabura, Ecuador, Jake Erickson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Intervention projects in the developing world normally aim to satisfy either the nutritional needs of a group, or advancing the economic stability, but not both. One of the many issues that may arise by narrowly focusing and creating an aid program is that although a group may be fed, they are not equipped to mitigate risks that will arise after project completion and thus continue or revert back to a malnourished state. A bridge is required to join the economic and nutritional programs to create aid interventions that are sustainable past the point of donor separation.
This paper proposes the …

A huge global increase in energy use is inevitable, so there is an urgent need to seek cleaner ways of producing energy on large scales. Fusion is the energy source of the universe and a promising way to fulfill energy needs of mankind for many centuries to come. It offers important advantages as a safe, sustainable, and environmentally friendly source of energy. The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) aims to demonstrate magnetic fusion is an energy source of the future. The goal of ITER is to produce 500 MW of fusion power given 50 MW of input power—or ten times …
Correcting Errors Due To Species Correlations In The Marginal Probability Density Evolution Algorithm, Abiezer Tejeda
Correcting Errors Due To Species Correlations In The Marginal Probability Density Evolution Algorithm, Abiezer Tejeda
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Synthetic biology is an emerging field that integrates and applies engineering design methods to biological systems. Its aim is to make biology an “engineerable” science. Over the years, biologists and engineers alike have abstracted biological systems into functional models that behave similarly to electric circuits, thus the creation of the subfield of genetic circuits. Mathematical models have been devised to simulate the behavior of genetic circuits in silico. Most models can be classified into deterministic and stochastic models. The work in this dissertation is for stochastic models.
Although ordinary differential equation (ODE) models are generally amenable to simulate genetic …
Research Into The Characteristics Of Effective High School Principals: A Case Study Of Leadership Practices Used In The High School Setting, Gregory G. Wilkey
Research Into The Characteristics Of Effective High School Principals: A Case Study Of Leadership Practices Used In The High School Setting, Gregory G. Wilkey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study came about largely due to my own personal belief in the centrality of the role the high school principal plays in the life of a young adult. I believe most people think of the school principal solely as an administrator who deals with personnel, discipline, facilities, events, transportation, parents, and so forth. While those are some of the responsibilities of a high school principal, I see the role of a high school principal with a much broader perspective. In addition to being an effective school manager, today’s high school principal must be a strong and visionary leader who …
A Computational Framework For Dam Safety Risk Assessment With Uncertainty Analysis, Anruag Srivastava
A Computational Framework For Dam Safety Risk Assessment With Uncertainty Analysis, Anruag Srivastava
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Event tree analysis is a commonly-used method in dam safety risk analysis. Event trees are used to obtain quantitative estimates of the probability of dam failure and its associated consequences. This can be done to evaluate the safety of an existing dam or to provide insights into the choice between risk reduction alternatives. In the past, the calculations have been performed using either generalized software developed primarily for business applications or purpose-built spreadsheets. However, these approaches lack generality, can require substantial effort, can be fragile, and are difficult to modify to represent risk reduction measures or to update using new …
The Phosphoramidase Competency Of Prototypical Phosphatase Catalytic Motifs, Mark P. Haney
The Phosphoramidase Competency Of Prototypical Phosphatase Catalytic Motifs, Mark P. Haney
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Phosphorylation of proteins is ubiquitous. Phosphorylation can activate proteins, deactivate proteins, assist in signaling, or serve other roles depending upon the biochemical pathway. Attaching phosphate to proteins is accomplished by enzymes called kinases; removing phosphate from proteins is accomplished by enzymes called phosphatases. Cells must regulate their biochemical pathways, and the antipodal roles of kinases and phosphatases represent the yin-yang of phosphorylation.
Phosphorylation of proteins is known to occur on serine, threonine, and tyrosine. This creates a phosphoester bond. Phosphoester bonds have a phosphorus-oxygen (P-O) bond. The ability of phosphatases to cleave such phosphoester bonds is well studied. Phosphorylation of …

Existence And Multiplicity Results On Standing Wave Solutions Of Some Coupled Nonlinear Schrodinger Equations, Rushun Tian
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations (CNLS) govern many physical phenomena, such as nonlinear optics and Bose-Einstein condensates. For their wide applications, many studies have been carried out by physicists, mathematicians and engineers from different respects. In this dissertation, we focused on standing wave solutions, which are of particular interests for their relatively simple form and the important roles they play in studying other wave solutions. We studied the multiplicity of this type of solutions of CNLS via variational methods and bifurcation methods.
Variational methods are useful tools for studying differential equations and systems of differential equations that possess the so-called variational …
Utility Of An Error Analysis And Performance Deficit Assessment For Selecting Brief Interventions To Increase Math Fluency, Aaron John Denison
Utility Of An Error Analysis And Performance Deficit Assessment For Selecting Brief Interventions To Increase Math Fluency, Aaron John Denison
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Children who struggle with math fluency are typically not provided with the appropriate motivation and instruction for their needs in the regular education classroom. Because of their lack of math fluency skills, these children can be negatively affected throughout their education and can continually fall further behind their peers. It is clear that children who struggle with math fluency should be provided with interventions specific to their needs in order to thrive in a school environment. Thus, it is critical that school psychologists and researchers develop effective strategies for children who are struggling with math fluency in order to help …

Identifying Perceptions That Contribute To The Development Of Successful Project Lead The Way Pre-Engineering Programs In Utah, Keith Mcmullin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In public education it is necessary to consider elective secondary educational programs and determine what it takes for the programs to be successful. Indeed, one could ask the question, "Are the classes in these programs giving our students what they need to be successful in life or should they be dropped from the school's registration catalog?" This research answers questions like this in Utah about the very popular pre-engineering program called "Project Lead the Way" (PLTW). The aims of this research was to explore factors that contribute to making successful PLTW programs in Utah.
The PLTW pre-engineering program is a …

Hybrid Photothermal Technique For Microscale Thermal Conductivity Measurement, Zilong Hua
Hybrid Photothermal Technique For Microscale Thermal Conductivity Measurement, Zilong Hua
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In nuclear reactors, the thermal energy generated from the nuclear reactions needs to be transferred all the way through the core of the fuels to the surrounding steam to be utilized. Therefore, thermal conductivity is considered an important thermophysical property of the fuel which needs to be measured. The nuclear fuel microstructure is known to be damaged by neutronirradiation, which can result in sharp, local changes of thermal conductivity. However, most existing thermal conductivity measurement techniques of nuclear fuel are not able to make high spatial-resolution measurements. The objective of this study was to develop a non-contact thermal conductivity measurement …
Laboratory Modeling Of Erosion Potential Of Seepage Barrier Material, Nathan E. Braithwaite
Laboratory Modeling Of Erosion Potential Of Seepage Barrier Material, Nathan E. Braithwaite
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Earthen dams and levees often use seepage barriers to reduce the flow of water through their foundations and embankments. A seepage barrier is a wall of less porous material built inside an embankment or its foundation. High water pressures and stresses during the curing of seepage barriers have been observed to cause the seepage barriers to crack. These cracks decrease the barrier’s effectiveness in reducing seepage flow and may lead to serious seepage problems. The purpose of this study is to determine, given highly porous soils and high water pressures, whether or not cracks in seepage barriers will erode and …

The first part of my dissertation demonstrates that a modified simulated annealing algorithm can successfully determine highly efficient D-optimal designs for second order polynomial regression for a variety of correlated error structures.
In the second part, I solved weak universal optimal block designs for the nearest neighbor correlation structure and multiple block sizes, for the hub correlation structure with any block size, and for circulant correlation with odd block size.
In the third part, we propose an improved Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm with time varying parameters. Then combining the theorem of decision making and PSO, we innovated nested PSO …
Using Qual2kw As A Decision Support Tool: Considerations For Data Collection, Calibration, And Numeric Nutrient Criteria, Andrew J. Hobson
Using Qual2kw As A Decision Support Tool: Considerations For Data Collection, Calibration, And Numeric Nutrient Criteria, Andrew J. Hobson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Surface water quality in the United States is managed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under direction of the Clean Water Act. Designated uses are required for all state waters. Numeric or narrative water quality standards provide measures to determine if each waterbody meets the intended use. Narrative standards typically include vague terminology that is difficult to interpret and this has led EPA to encourage states to develop numeric criteria for nutrients in all its streams, rivers, and lakes. These numeric nutrient criteria are intended to stave off the harmful effects of over-growth of aquatic plants which can result …

A Numerical Algorithm For Simulating Two Species Plasma, Richard F. Datwyler
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In our ever-growing technology-dependent society, a great need for cleaner, more lucrative energy sources is being sought out. Nuclear fission power plants have been used to help provide energy for many years now. More recently, fusion test reactors have been built and planned as another means to fill the energy quota. A large part of understanding the fundamental principles in a fusion reactor focuses on the principles of plasma physics. This topic of plasma physics has been studied for many decades and much progress has been made in its understanding.
More recently, computers have become larger and faster allowing for …
Evolutionary Optimization Algorithms For Nonlinear Systems, Ashish Raj
Evolutionary Optimization Algorithms For Nonlinear Systems, Ashish Raj
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In the real world, we encounter a number of problems which require iterative methods rather than heuristic approaches to solve them. Not every problem can be solved with a definitive method. Optimization algorithms come to the aid of such instances. These algorithms carry out multiple iterations or generations to try to achieve the lowest value of a cost function. The demand for fast and robust stochastic algorithms to cater to the optimization needs is very high. The faster the convergence to a low value of the cost function, the better the algorithm is. This is attained in greedy criterion approaches, …
Determination Of Ionospheric Current Systems By Measuring The Phase Shift On Amateur Satellite Frequencies, Prajwal M. Kasturi
Determination Of Ionospheric Current Systems By Measuring The Phase Shift On Amateur Satellite Frequencies, Prajwal M. Kasturi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Linearly polarized electromagnetic waves traveling through cold magnetized plasma experience Faraday rotation. The Appleton Hartree dispersion equation relates the phase shift on any electromagnetic ray to the magnetic field B, ion-electron density Ne and the angle the ray makes with the instantaneous magnetic field. This work uses the dispersion relation to calculate small time scale magnetic perturbations in the ionosphere due to electrojet current systems. The ionosphere is modeled as a collision free cold plasma with synthesized small scale magnetic perturbations. The work presented here simulates test cases, where the satellites transmits three amateur satellite radio band frequencies …

Independent grocery shopping is one of the biggest challenges faced by visually impaired (VI) individuals. VI individuals may be able to get to a store on their own by using public transportation or by walking but are unable to shop there independently. Some of the problems that they face after getting to the store include long wait times to get an employee to assist them or getting a store employee who is not familiar with the store layout, gets irritated with long searches, or does not possess the required English skills. These problems ultimately result in VI shoppers having to …
Spatially Indexed Functional Data, Oleksandr Gromenko
Spatially Indexed Functional Data, Oleksandr Gromenko
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The increased concentration of greenhouse gases is associated with the global warming in the lower troposphere. For over twenty years, the space physics community has studied a hypothesis of global cooling in the thermosphere, attributable to greenhouse gases. While the global temperature increase in the lower troposphere has been relatively well established, the existence of global changes in the thermosphere is still under investigation.
A central difficulty in reaching definite conclusions is the absence of data with sufficiently long temporal and sufficiently broad spatial coverage. Time series of data that cover several decades exist only in a few separated (industrialized) …
Particle Dynamics And Resistivity Characteristics In Bifurcated Current Sheets, Tushar Andriyas
Particle Dynamics And Resistivity Characteristics In Bifurcated Current Sheets, Tushar Andriyas
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Charged particle chaos and its collective effects in different magnetic geometries are investigated in a sequence of various numerical experiments. The fields generated by the particles as a result of interaction with the background electric and magnetic fields is not accounted for in the simulation. An X-line is first used to describe the geometry of the magnetotail prior to magnetic reconnection and a study of the behavior of charged particles is done from a microscopic viewpoint. Another important geometry in the magnetotail prior to substorm onset is Bifurcated Current Sheet. The same analysis is done for this configuration. The existence …
