Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis Of Butterfly Valve Performance Factors, Adam Del Toro
Computational Fluid Dynamics Analysis Of Butterfly Valve Performance Factors, Adam Del Toro
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Butterfly valves are commonly used to control fluid flow inside of piping systems. A butterfly valve typically consists of a metal disc formed around a central shaft, which acts as its axis of rotation. As a butterfly valve is rotated open, fluid is able to more readily flow past the valve. A butterfly valve’s design is important to understand and is commonly characterized by its own performance factors. How a butterfly valve will perform, while in operation at different opening angles and under different types of flow, is critical information for individuals planning and installing piping systems involving the valve. …
A Novel And Effective Short Track Speed Skating Tracking System, Yuxuan Wang
A Novel And Effective Short Track Speed Skating Tracking System, Yuxuan Wang
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Short track speed skating lends itself to intense competitions with a strong visual impact. Thus, the sport has become increasingly popular. In fact, in 1992, short track speed skating became an official Winter Olympic sport with four events, and four more events were added in 2002. Because of the sport’s growing popularity, there is a high demand from both coaches and TV broadcasters for a means of automatically gathering competition data such as trajectories, velocities, and 2D reconstruction animation. We call this vision-based sports video analysis.
In competitive short track speed skating, multiple skaters skate together on an ice track …
On-Farm Water Management Game With Heuristic Capabilities, Mohammed Z. Shaban
On-Farm Water Management Game With Heuristic Capabilities, Mohammed Z. Shaban
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Improved on-farm irrigation practices can result in more economical farming, and better productivity. Very little has been done with regard to improved training tools that can be used to promote better and more effective on-farm irrigation practices. Games considered as an effective decision support tools in which players are able to test alternatives, and demonstrate the effects of their decisions, in a short time, and without being afraid of making mistakes. Training tools in the form of games promotes what is called “learning based on experience” through a schematic version of reality, and observing the effects.
The WaterMan game was …
A 2d Finite Element/1d Fourier Solution To The Fokker-Planck Equation, Joseph Andrew Spencer
A 2d Finite Element/1d Fourier Solution To The Fokker-Planck Equation, Joseph Andrew Spencer
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Plasma, the fourth state of matter, is a gas in which a significant portion of the atoms are ionized. It is estimated that more than 99% of the material in the visible universe is in the plasma state. The process that stars, including our sun, combine atomic nuclei and produce large amounts of energy is called thermonuclear fusion. It is anticipated future energy demands will be met by large terrestrial devices harnessing the energy of nuclear fusion. A gas hot enough to produce the number of atomic collisions needed for fusion is necessarily in the plasma state. Therefore, plasmas are …

Statistical Methods For Launch Vehicle Guidance, Navigation, And Control (Gn&C) System Design And Analysis, Michael Benjamin Rose
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A new tool for launch vehicle design and analysis is developed. The tool is capable of rapid analysis of requirements tradeoffs affecting system design and developed to reduce turnaround time for launch vehicle design and mission planning. It is streamlined to quickly determine trajectory and attitude control dispersions which represent how far the actual trajectory is expected to deviate from the nominal flight path, propellant dispersions which represent how much propellant is required to meet mission requirements, and navigation errors which represent how far the navigation filter’s estimate of the actual trajectory is expected to deviate from the actual trajectory. …
A Phenomenological Study Of Professional Identity Change In Released-Time Seminary Teachers, Mark Daniel Mason
A Phenomenological Study Of Professional Identity Change In Released-Time Seminary Teachers, Mark Daniel Mason
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Many practitioners commonly deal with implementing a change that is imposed by an organization. Some imposed changes require practitioners to alter more than what they do in practice but also to change their identity. Many researchers have studied identity change through the lens of sociocultural theory, specifically utilizing communities of practice theory (CoP). However, the majority of these studies used CoP theory as a vehicle to implement the imposed change. Yet some studies have found that after the trial period ends many practitioners revert back to the way they performed in practice prior to the study. One reason for this …
Water Infrastructure Challenges In Urbanizing Environments: A Case Study Of The 2009 Logan Canal Landslide, Kathryn Davis Henderson
Water Infrastructure Challenges In Urbanizing Environments: A Case Study Of The 2009 Logan Canal Landslide, Kathryn Davis Henderson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In July, 2009 in Logan, Utah, a wet, steep hillside failed, leveling a home below and destroying an irrigation canal that ran along the hill. Three people were killed. The event and the resulting policy changes present an opportunity to uncover how frames, or social constructions, play into the policy development cycle. This case also uncovers the nuances involved when old infrastructure takes on new social meanings. Planners and policymakers that pay attention to frames and social dimensions may be able to minimize conflict.
The landslide received immediate media attention and spurred state legislation on canal safety. The event had …
Heterogeneous Water And Energy End-Uses And Implications For Residential Water And Energy Conservation And Management, Adel M. Abdallah
Heterogeneous Water And Energy End-Uses And Implications For Residential Water And Energy Conservation And Management, Adel M. Abdallah
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Indoor water-use consumes energy to heat hot water. Indoor water- and energy-use vary significantly among households due to variable household water-use behaviors and varying ages and efficiencies of water appliances. Also, the energy consumed to heat water varies among households and depends on water heater efficiency, heater thermostat setup, percentage of hot water in the final used water, and the cold water intake temperature. This research considers behavioral and technological variability in household water-and-energy-use to better understand water and energy linkages and help utilities target water and energy conservation actions to customer and appliances within their homes that the most …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The main objective of the research is the development of Multivariate Relevant Vector Machine (MVRVM) to predict suspended fine sediment, water quality constituents, and provide an understanding for the practical problem of determining the amount of data required for the MVRVM. MVRVM is a statistical learning algorithm that is based on Bayes theory. It has been widely used to predict patterns in hydrological systems and other fields. This research represents the first known attempt to use a MVRVM approach to predict transport of very fine sediment and water quality constituents in a complex natural system.
The results demonstrate the ability …
Homogenization Of Large-Scale Movement Models In Ecology With Application To The Spread Of Chronic Wasting Disease In Mule Deer, Martha J. Garlick
Homogenization Of Large-Scale Movement Models In Ecology With Application To The Spread Of Chronic Wasting Disease In Mule Deer, Martha J. Garlick
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) that affects deer, elk, and moose. TSEs are prion diseases which include mad cow disease and scrapie in sheep and goats. The disease agent is a misshapen protein called a prion, which causes lesions in the brain, and to date, there is no cure. CWD is a slow-developing, fatal disease, which is rare in the free-ranging mule deer population of Utah. Infected deer shed prions into the environment through saliva, feces, and decaying carcasses. These prions remain infective in soils for many years and healthy deer may contract CWD by …
Integrating Remote Sensing And Ecosystem Models For Terrestrial Vegetation Analysis: Phenology, Biomass, And Stand Age, Gong Zhang
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Terrestrial vegetation plays an important role in global carbon cycling and climate change by assimilating carbon into biomass during the growing season and releasing it due to natural or anthropogenic disturbances. Remote sensing and ecosystem models can help us extend our studies of vegetation phenology, aboveground biomass, and disturbances from field sites to regional or global scales. Nonetheless, remote sensing-derived variables may differ in fundamental and important ways from ground measurements. With the growth of remote sensing as a key tool in geoscience research, comparisons to ground data and intercomparisons among satellite products are needed. Here I conduct three separate …
Factors Influencing The Distribution Of Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta) In A Mountain Stream: Implications For Brown Trout Invasion Success, Christy Meredith
Factors Influencing The Distribution Of Brown Trout (Salmo Trutta) In A Mountain Stream: Implications For Brown Trout Invasion Success, Christy Meredith
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Brown trout (Salmo trutta), one of the world’s most successful introduced species in river and lake systems, negatively impacts native species through predation, competition, and systemwide effects. Thus, there is a need to understand factors controlling the distribution of brown trout, in order to prioritize and develop conservation and management strategies. Within the context of invasion success, I investigated how the physical characteristics of the Logan River influence the distribution of brown trout, as well as the potential for brown trout predation on a native fish, the mottled sculpin (Cottus bairdi).
In chapter 1, I evaluated …
The Influence Of Geology And Other Environmental Factors On Stream Water Chemistry And Benthic Invertebrate Assemblages, John R. Olson
The Influence Of Geology And Other Environmental Factors On Stream Water Chemistry And Benthic Invertebrate Assemblages, John R. Olson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Determining if a stream has been degraded by human activities requires knowing what that stream’s natural water quality and freshwater species composition would likely be without any alteration. However stream natural conditions vary greatly from stream to stream, making predicting natural conditions difficult. To determine natural stream conditions, I developed models to predict natural stream water chemistry at individual streams across the western USA. Specifically, the models predict a stream’s electrical conductivity (a measure of the amount of solids dissolved in water), acid neutralization capacity, and concentrations of calcium, magnesium, sulfate, total phosphorus, and total nitrogen. These models predict chemistry …
Bubble Coalescence And Breakup Modeling For Computing Mass Transfer Coefficient, Ryan A. Mawson
Bubble Coalescence And Breakup Modeling For Computing Mass Transfer Coefficient, Ryan A. Mawson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Modeling fluid behavior with computer numerical models can be very difficult due to the physical phenomenon which can be present in complex fluid systems. One difficult situation to model is when there is more than one type of fluid in a system. Some of these systems include fluids which do not mix, such as is the case when a liquid and a gas are present. In this situation, the gas phase will form bubbles which are dispersed throughout the liquid phase. Modeling the breakup and coalescence of these bubbles is critical to correctly model this type of situation.

Identification Of Influential Climate Indicators, Prediction Of Long-Term Streamflow And Great Salt Lake Elevation Using Machine Learning Approach, Niroj K. Shrestha
Identification Of Influential Climate Indicators, Prediction Of Long-Term Streamflow And Great Salt Lake Elevation Using Machine Learning Approach, Niroj K. Shrestha
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In order to meet rising water demand due to rapid population growth and changing climatic conditions around the world, and to reduce the impact of floods and draughts, a comprehensive water management and planning is necessary. Water resource management requires the prediction of streamflow under climatic variability, and variability of hydrologic quantities that changes in time and space. Prediction of streamflow using physically-based model are usually complex and typically requires detailed knowledge of physical processes. The availability of data is an important issue to justify the use of these models. Using a data-driven model that relies on the machine learning …
Production Of Biodiesel From Oleaginous Organisms Using Underutilized Wastewaters, Valerie Godfrey
Production Of Biodiesel From Oleaginous Organisms Using Underutilized Wastewaters, Valerie Godfrey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
As part of the BioEnergy Team at Utah State Univeristy, my research objectives have been centered around the common theme of innovating new methods and
technology for producing biological compounds and, by means of chemical conversion and/or extraction, isolating new forms of biodiesel available for transportation fuel.
Within the broad scope of this project, I focused on the replacement of freshwater in cultivating such biological systems with wastewaters. If accomplished and correctly
applied, such research would reduce the environmental impact of biodiesel production by reducing the demand for freshwater. It also would reduce production costs by reducing the amount of …
Environmental Assessment Of Streams: Linking Land Use, Instream Stressors, And Biological Indices To Infer Likely Causes Of Ecological Impairment, Jacob J. Vander Laan
Environmental Assessment Of Streams: Linking Land Use, Instream Stressors, And Biological Indices To Infer Likely Causes Of Ecological Impairment, Jacob J. Vander Laan
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
To protect and restore stream biota, managers need to be able to both detect biological degradation and infer likely causes of impairment. Managers commonly develop indices based on stream biota to assess the biological condition of streams. However, the performance of these indices dictates the ability to detect degradation, and although index performance varies widely, the sources of this variation are often unclear. In addition, bioassessments do not identify causes of impairment. My thesis research had two general goals: 1) develop indices to measure biological condition in Nevada streams and 2) quantify relationships between land uses, stressors, and biological condition …

Father-Child Interactions At 24 And 36 Months And Developmental Outcomes At Prekindergarten, Shareesa L. Mcmurdie
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This study looked at father teaching interactions and singing in toddlerhood as predictors of child cognitive and language outcomes at prekindergarten in a low-income, ethnically diverse sample. Results found that, overall, father teaching interactions in toddlerhood predicted child cognitive and language outcomes at prekindergarten and father singing in toddlerhood predicted language outcomes. Fathers provided slightly more teaching interactions at child age 24 months than at 36 months, and sang more frequently at 36 months.
Within ethnic groups, father teaching interactions were statistically significant in predicting cognitive and language development outcomes for children of African American (approached significance for language outcomes) …
Effects Of Cache Valley Particulate Matter On Human Lung Cells, Todd L. Watterson
Effects Of Cache Valley Particulate Matter On Human Lung Cells, Todd L. Watterson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
During the wintertime, residents of the Cache Valley are very aware of the poor air quality that occurs during cold-air inversion episodes. If one somehow avoids the radio and television announcements as well as the electronic roadside signs indicating poor air quality and encouraging less driving, one need only to look upward toward the mountains that surround the valley and notice the lack of daytime visibility. This lack of visibility and health warnings are due to particulate air pollution or particulate matter (PM). PM is only one of many types of regulated air pollution but is the one that occurs …
Effects Of Sustained Teacher Professional Development On The Classroom Science Instruction Of Elementary School Teachers, Nancy Hauck
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which sustained teacher professional development in science education affects the classroom instruction of
elementary school teachers in third through sixth grade over a 3-year period. The teachers in the study were all elementary endorsed and prepared to be generalists in the content areas.
Science reform has led to more content-specific science standards that are difficult for most elementary teachers to address without professional development. Recent studies on improving elementary science instruction suggest the need for professional development to be long term, embedded in teaching practice in the classroom, and …

Sustainable Ski Resorts In The State Of Utah: Working Toward The Future, Andrew Call
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Utah State University Extension branch funded a research project designed to meet an identified need and create a baseline in knowledge of the implementation of environmentally sustainable practices among Utah ski resorts. Because of the potential impacts of climate change and unsustainable practices that negatively impact both the biophysical and human/cultural aspects of these environments, the ski resort industry is facing an uncertain future both environmentally and economically. However, very little is known about this issue, or how to address it. Collecting baseline information on the subject of environmental sustainability amongst Utah area ski resorts is crucial to ensure …
Prediction Models For Estimation Of Soil Moisture Content, Swathi Gorthi
Prediction Models For Estimation Of Soil Moisture Content, Swathi Gorthi
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The Center for Self-Organizing Intelligent Systems (CSOIS) has been successful in developing personal remote sensing systems. These systems can be further enhanced to monitor important resources of earth such as soil moisture content. Soil moisture is the major component of the soil in relation to plant growth. Soil water dissolves salts and makes up the soil solution, which is important as medium for supply of nutrients to growing plants.
Usually, measuring such physical quantities would include using derived formulas that mathematically describe the relationships between the parameters involved. With the advancements in computer modeling, other methods such as empirical modeling …
Rotating Algal Biofilm Reactors: Mathematical Modeling And Lipid Production, Paul A. Woolsey
Rotating Algal Biofilm Reactors: Mathematical Modeling And Lipid Production, Paul A. Woolsey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Harvesting of algal biomass presents a large barrier to the success of biofuels made from algae feedstock. Small cell sizes coupled with dilute concentrations of biomass in lagoon systems make separation an expensive and energy intense-process. The rotating algal biofilm reactor (RABR) has been developed at USU to provide a sustainable technology solution to this issue. Algae cells grown as a biofilm are concentrated in one location for ease of harvesting of high density biomass. A mathematical model of this biofilm system was developed based on data generated from three pilot scale reactors at the City of Logan, Utah wastewater …
Potential Effects Of Altered Precipitation Regimes On Primary Production In Terrestrial Ecosystems, Joanna S. Hsu
Potential Effects Of Altered Precipitation Regimes On Primary Production In Terrestrial Ecosystems, Joanna S. Hsu
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In addition to causing an increase in mean temperatures, climate change is also altering precipitation regimes across the globe. General circulation models project both latitude-dependent changes in precipitation mean and increases in precipitation variability. These changes in water availability will impact terrestrial primary productivity, the fixation of carbon dioxide into organic matter by plants. In my thesis, I addressed the following three questions: 1.) What will be the relative effect of changes in the mean and standard deviation of annual precipitation on mean annual primary production? 2.) Which ecosystems will be the most sensitive to changes in precipitation? 3.) Will …
An Embedded Atom Method Investigation Into The Lattice Dynamics Of Metallic Surfaces, Richard B. Wilson
An Embedded Atom Method Investigation Into The Lattice Dynamics Of Metallic Surfaces, Richard B. Wilson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The explosion in electronic devices over the last half century is a result of the successful development and application of theories that explain the physical properties of solids. For example, the theory of lattice vibrations developed in the first half of the 20th century has had a huge impact on our ability to understand and design devices. The idea that atoms vibrate together in grouped vibrational modes, called phonons, has enabled scientists to quantify the impact that atomic motion has on mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical properties. This has aided the creation of all sorts of useful technology ranging …
Evaluation And Seismically Isolated Substructure Redesign Of A Typical Multi-Span Pre-Stressed Concrete Girder Highway Bridge, Brian D. Richins
Evaluation And Seismically Isolated Substructure Redesign Of A Typical Multi-Span Pre-Stressed Concrete Girder Highway Bridge, Brian D. Richins
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Seismic considerations greatly influence the lateral and vertical design of a structure, often necessitating larger elements than would otherwise be required. Seismic isolation greatly reduces the demands on a structure due to earthquake loading, allowing the use of smaller, more efficient members and foundations. This case study illustrates the theory and procedure of evaluating the response of a recently built multi-span highway bridge using the most recent (2009) AASHTO code. Based on this response, an equivalent structure was designed to incorporate a seismic isolation system, and the substructure of the isolated bridge redesigned to meet the reduced demands more economically. …
Asymptotic Multiphysics Modeling Of Composite Beams, Qi Wang
Asymptotic Multiphysics Modeling Of Composite Beams, Qi Wang
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
A series of composite beam models are constructed for efficient high-fidelity beam analysis based on the variational-asymptotic method (VAM). Without invoking any a priori kinematic assumptions, the original three-dimensional, geometrically nonlinear beam problem is rigorously split into a two-dimensional cross-sectional analysis and a one-dimensional global beam analysis, taking advantage of the geometric small parameter that is an inherent property of the structure.
The thermal problem of composite beams is studied first. According to the quasisteady theory of thermoelasticity, two beam models are proposed: one for heat conduction analysis and the other for thermoelastic analysis. For heat conduction analysis, two different …
Evaluation Of An Incompressible Energy-Vorticity Turbulence Model For Fully Rough Pipe Flow, Doug F. Hunsaker
Evaluation Of An Incompressible Energy-Vorticity Turbulence Model For Fully Rough Pipe Flow, Doug F. Hunsaker
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Traditional methods of closing the Boussinesq-based Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are considered, and suggestions for improving two-equation turbulence models are made. The traditional smooth-wall boundary conditions are shown to be incorrect, and the correct boundary conditions are provided along with sample solutions to traditional models. The correct boundary condition at a smooth wall for dissipation-based turbulence models is that which forces both the turbulent kinetic energy and its first derivative to zero. Foundations for an energy-vorticity model suggested by Phillips are presented along with the near-smooth-wall behavior of the model. These results show that at a perfectly smooth wall, the turbulent …
Effect Of Vegetation On The Accumulation And Melting Of Snow At The Tw Daniels Experimental Forest, Vinod Mahat
Effect Of Vegetation On The Accumulation And Melting Of Snow At The Tw Daniels Experimental Forest, Vinod Mahat
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Snow melt is an important component of Western US water resources, accounting for about 50-80% of the annual runoff. Water resources management requires prediction of runoff from snowmelt accounting for the variability of vegetation present in heterogeneous watersheds. This dissertation has examined ways to improve snowmelt modeling capability to better account for vegetation canopy effects on snowmelt and has presented enhancements to an energy balance model that include i) an improved representation of the transmission of radiation through the canopy, ii) an improved representation of the atmospheric transport of heat and water vapor between the snow on the ground, in …
