Thermodynamics Of Phosphate Absorption On Several Charcoals, James Duncan Beaton May 1957

Thermodynamics Of Phosphate Absorption On Several Charcoals, James Duncan Beaton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Phosphorus has long been recognized by agriculturists as being one of the elements essential for plant growth. Although the total phosphorus content of a soil may be high, the amount of phosphate actually available for plant growth is often low. Many agencies such as inherent low solubilities of phosphate compounds, adsorption on Ca C03, adsorption in the diffuse double layer of clay micelles, and chemical precipitation of phosphate which refers to the removal of phosphate ions from solution and their chemical bonding to the solid phase have been studied to explain the lack of phosphate availability.

The Relative Saponin Content Of Alfalfa Varieties In Utah As Measured By Chick Growth Depression, Morris Dean Wilding

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Bloat among ruminants is not new to farmers or scientists. One learns from a Roman author's description of this ailment written in 60 A. D. that the symptoms have changed little since that time. Literature also records that the treatments used today for the prevention and relief of bloat are similar to those prescribed by the early Romans (Anonymous 1954).

Breakfast Habits Of Some Utah School Children, Marlene M. Stegelmeier May 1957

Breakfast Habits Of Some Utah School Children, Marlene M. Stegelmeier

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

During the last 10 years, much emphasis has been placed on the importance of breakfast for people of all ages. Nutritionists have pointed out that persons who eat a hearty breakfast show fewer signs of mid-morning fatigue, have or develop better work habits, and do not get as hungry as those who eat little or no breakfast.

Many people do not realize the importance of starting the day with a good breakfast. The 12 to 13 hour fast which the body undergoes from the evening meal until breakfast time requires the consumption of an adequate breakfast. Many poor breakfasts may …

Temperature Forecasting At Logan, Utah, For The Snowmelt-Runoff Season, Clifton Johnson May 1957

Temperature Forecasting At Logan, Utah, For The Snowmelt-Runoff Season, Clifton Johnson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the practicability of forecasting temperatures for the spring and summer snowmelt-runoff season. A successful temperature forecast for Logan, Utah, would be useful in studies of Logan River streamflow, as well as other related applications.

Logan, Utah, is situated in a region where the snow accumulates during the winter and early spring at high altitudes and remains until the proper sequence of meteorological events provides the thermodynamic conditions essential for melting. Snow surveys provide an index to the water available on a watershed. Temperature conditions during the melt period largely determine the available …

A Survey To Determine The Incidence Of Antibodies Against Q Fever In Persons In Utah, Carl H. Blank May 1957

A Survey To Determine The Incidence Of Antibodies Against Q Fever In Persons In Utah, Carl H. Blank

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Q fever, as a recognized clinical entity, is often referred to as a new disease of man. Pneumonic in character but lacking clean-cut pathognomic characteristics, in all probability Q fever has been confused in the past with influenza, primary atypical pneumonia (1), or included as an undifferentiated disease under "virus pneumonia." Geddis Smith (2), writing in 1941, stated:

...influenza, pneumonia, "pleurisy", or bronchitis ... form a nosological jungle in which bacteria and viruses roam at will, despoiling the human race and defying both classification and control. Symptoms overlap and no one knows how many different diseases lurk behind them.

The Use Of Branchiostegal Rays To Determine Age Of Lake Trout Salvelinus Namaycush Walbaum, Ross Vivian Bulkley May 1957

The Use Of Branchiostegal Rays To Determine Age Of Lake Trout Salvelinus Namaycush Walbaum, Ross Vivian Bulkley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Any method used in aging fish must fulfill certain requirements to be satisfactory. If the method is inaccurate, naturally little reliance can be placed upon its use. If considerable study of the method and much practice are required before accurate readings can be obtained, the method will not come into widespread use. The requirements of an aging method, then are that it must be accurate and comparatively easy. The scale method for aging lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush Walbaum) unfortunately does not fulfill these requirements. It has always been difficult to tell the age of lake trout by the examination …

Effect Of Hay Or Rate Of Grain Supplementation On Performance Of Lactating Dairy Cows Fed Clipped Pasture Forage, Clive Wendell Arave May 1957

Effect Of Hay Or Rate Of Grain Supplementation On Performance Of Lactating Dairy Cows Fed Clipped Pasture Forage, Clive Wendell Arave

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Pasture is considered one of our most important agricultural crops, contributing more than one third of all feed consumed by livestock in the United States. High quality pasture has been recognized to be highly important in efficient milk production. It has been shown, however, that good pasture must be supplemented by concentrates if milk production is to be maintained at a high level.

A pasture mixture developed at the Utah Agriculture Experiment Station has yielded considerably more total digestible nutrients per acre than other roughages or farm grains commonly grown in Utah. Concentrates tend to be relatively more expensive than …

A Comparative Study Of Milk Solids And Corn Syrup Solids In The Manufacture Of Sherbets, George C. Walker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Burke says, "Product inferiority constitutes the greatest menace to the success and progress of any industry." The ice cream industry is no exception. Improvement in the quality of dairy products is a challenge that always faces the industry. Today's products are good, but they can be improved, Sherbet is one product that should be improved most. Many ice cream manufacturers are losing a great potential market because sherbets generally are of poor quality.

The Airplane In Unit Sampling Of Mule Deer Populations In Harding County, South Dakota, Karl B. Kuhlmann

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The prairie deer region of South Dakota extends west from the Missouri River to the Black Hills. The region borders the states of Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota, and is approximately 40,000 square miles in extent. Biologists believe that present deer numbers on these prairies are similar to those of pre-homestead days. The present large numbers of deer in certain counties have given many prairie ranchers and farmers cause for concern. The region's first deer season (bucks only) in 1952 resulted from earlier increases in mule and whitetail herds. After a closed season in 1953, a hunter's choice of …

An Economic Analysis Of Merchandising Fluid Milk In Utah, E. Boyd Wennergren

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The basic problem confronting the dairy industry today is one of utilizing its total fluid milk production. During recent years the industry has witnessed a general decrease in per capita consumption of dairy products while per capita production has remained fairly constant and in amounts approximating the average for the past 16 years (Table 2 ). As a result the dairy industry has produced a surplus of fluid milk and manufactured dairy products. The Federal Government, under its price support program, has been the ultimate recipient of these surpluses and now possesses huge warehouse stocks. The cost to the Federal …

A History Of The Rambouillet Breed Of Sheep In Utah, Edwin M. G. Seely

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The domestic sheep in the flocks in the state of Utah all trace their origins back to Europe. Between the sixteenth century and the present, sheep have made at least six different journeys from the old world to America and have fused their blood in the formation of the sheep industry of Utah. Each of these movements has a dramatic and interesting story to be told, but the trek of the Rambouillet is perhaps the most fascinating of all. The journey began in Spain, when by sea and by land the hardy fine-wool Spanish Merino made its way into France …

The Effect Of Sucrose Feeding On Phosphorus Content, Protein Content, And Color Of Turkey Livers And Muscles, Mary Tai

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

All carbohydrates metabolized in the body must first be phosphorylated, As a result of Lundgaard's (1930 ) and Lohmann's (1934) discoveries, the focal interest of muscle biochemistry has passed from the carbohydrate molecules to the phosphorus compounds, For glucose, the first reaction is the formation of a phosphate ester, glucose-6- phosphate, D. M. Needham (1938) found that ATP acts as a phosphorus donor, Glucose-6-phosphate may be transformed into glucose-1-phosphate or into fructose-6-phosphate. In liver, it may be hydrolized back to free glucose and inorganic phosphorus, Bate-Smith (1948) indicated that the free phosphate must be present before any breakdown of glycogen …

Survey And Evaluation Of Big Game Exclosures In Utah, Stanford Young May 1955

Survey And Evaluation Of Big Game Exclosures In Utah, Stanford Young

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

An "exclosure" is defined by Daubenmore (1940) as an experimental area which is protected from the activities of a particular class of animals by a barrier such as a fence or screen thereby controlling a single factor of environment, namely, the animal influence.

Several different types of exclosures are employed by the land management agencies in Utah. Small portable "paddocks" a few feet square are extensively used to gauge seasonal grazing pressure by livestock. Permanently fenced areas, ranging up to many acres in size, serve to demonstrate the effects of livestock use on the range. Another modification is the "big …

Kochia scoparia (L.) Schrad. has had limited use as a forage crop during the past fifteen years in parts of the western United States, Canada, and Argentina. Erickson and Moxon (1947) reported kochia* to be a good emergency feed for sheep and cattle during dry years in South Dakota. Salguero (1946) said that this species could be utilized in Argentina as silage or pasturage if harvested before flowering. Bell, et al. (1952) in Saskatoon, Canada studied this species in a comparison with other introduced plants and reported that it seemed to have desirable nutrient characteristics for livestock roughage. Plummer …

Determination Of Digestibility Of Lignin By Mule Deer, Robert B. Turner May 1955

Determination Of Digestibility Of Lignin By Mule Deer, Robert B. Turner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The conflicting problems involving the herds of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) are of major interest throughout Utah. Individuals who are affected the most are sportsmen, ranchers, fruitgrowers, sanitation engineers, home owners, federal administrators, and big game managers. Mainly, the problems arise as a result of insufficient forage, especially on the winter range. Here, factors such as increased deer numbers, decreased range productivity, severe winters, and expanded agricultural activity make more acute the problem of a naturally critical season.

Restoration of forage by artificial measures may be necessary as a management solution for certain areas. Range rehabilitation, rather than …

A Study Of The Winter Foraging Habits Of Mule Deer In Enclosures In Northern Utah With A Test Of The Half-And-Half Sampling Technique, Donald R. Flook

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Mule deer provide recreational bunting to a large number of sportsmen in Utah, and also have a high aesthetic value.

Prior to settlement, deer are believed to have wintered in the valleys and lower foothill areas. However, in northern Utah agricultural development bas removed many valleys and lower foothill areas from the available winter range. The winter deer range in this area has therefore been restricted to a relatively small area of foothill country, and low elevation mountain slopes and benches.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The association of: flies with man has been recorded through many centuries. In nearly all of these records the association is one of discord rather than harmony. In the Book of Exodus, 8:24, in the King James version of the Old Testament, we can read, "...and there came grievous swarms of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants' houses; and in all the land of Egypt the land was corrupted by reason of the swarms of flies." Centuries later the "grievous swarms of flies" 'were associated with a particular disease by Mercurialis. In 1577 he expressed the …
