Family Planning Clinic Characteristics And Their Influence On Contraceptive Behavior And Pregnancy Rates In Alabama, 1994-1996, Margaret Beatrice Snively Jan 1998

Family Planning Clinic Characteristics And Their Influence On Contraceptive Behavior And Pregnancy Rates In Alabama, 1994-1996, Margaret Beatrice Snively

All ETDs from UAB

Objectives. The purpose of this study was to determine: (1) whether characteristics of Alabama's Title X family planning clinics influenced birth, abortion, and pregnancy rates of adult women, teenagers and all women; and (2) if there was an effect, whether it was through the intervening variables of client contraceptive behavior. Methods. Measures for clinic access and quality were obtained primarily from administrative reports and billing records routinely collected by the Alabama Department of Public Health for 1993-1995, using 65 of Alabama's counties as the units of analysis. Outcomes were county birth, abortion, and pregnancy rates for 1994-1996. Linear regression was …

High-Dose Vitamin A Supplementation And Immune Response To Influenza A Viral Pneumonia In Balb/C Mice, Dongming Cui Jan 1997

High-Dose Vitamin A Supplementation And Immune Response To Influenza A Viral Pneumonia In Balb/C Mice, Dongming Cui

All ETDs from UAB

To investigate the importance of high dose vitamin A in the immune response and regulatory function of T helper (Th) cells to influenza A viral pneumonia, BALB/c mice were fed a high dose vitamin A diet (250,000 IU/kg diet) or a control diet (4,000 IU/kg diet) and then were intranasally inoculated with influenza A virus under light anesthesia at 7 weeks of age. The effect of these diets on vitamin A status (serum and liver retinol concentrations), severity of disease (survival and weight loss), virus replication, the antibody response to infection (serum IgG and salivary IgA), and on cytokine production …

Effect Of Shigellosis On Serum Concentration And Urinary Excretion Of Retinol, Amal Krishna Mitra Jan 1997

Effect Of Shigellosis On Serum Concentration And Urinary Excretion Of Retinol, Amal Krishna Mitra

All ETDs from UAB

Urinary retinol excretion was measured in 206 children aged 5 mo to 5 y with various illnesses. The mechanism of retinol excretion was examined in patients who had Shigella infection (n = 66). Serum retinol concentrations in patients with shigellosis were very low at admission, and increased significantly by discharge (0.36 $\pm$ 0.22 vs. 1.15 $\pm$ 0.50 $\mu$mol/L, $p < 0.001),$ although no vitamin A supplements were given. Poor nutritional status (wt/age z-score), and S. dysenteriae infection significantly predicted admission serum retinol, after controlling for possible confounding variables. Retinol loss in the urine was significantly higher among children with sepsis (0.154 $\pm$ 0.148 $\mu$mol/d) than among the other groups. Among those with shigellosis, infection due to S. dysenteriae was associated with a significantly higher amount of urinary retinol excretion compared to other Shigella (0.048 $\pm$ 0.127 vs. 0.002 $\pm$ 0.005 $\mu$mol/d, p = 0.015). The threshold of excreting $>$0.1 $\mu$mol/d increases substantially when body temperature is ${\ge}40\sp\circ$C and acute phase proteins (CRP and AGP) reach high serum concentrations, indicating a severely sick patient who is excreting a greater amount of urinary retinol. Proximal tubular function was compromized in children …

High 5 Alabama: A Pilot Study Increasing Fruit And Vegetable Intake In Fourth Graders, Dianne Boyd Binkley

All ETDs from UAB

A large number of studies have shown that excessive fat intake, inadequate dietary fiber, and inadequate consumption of certain micronutrients, such as vitamin A, are associated with higher rates of cancers. Studies of Americans' consumption patterns have revealed excessive fat intake, inadequate dietary fiber, and inadequate consumption of certain micronutrients. Adults, adolescents, and children exhibit patterns of underconsumption of important nutrients. This study tested a three-component--classroom, parent, cafeteria--intervention for fourth graders. It included learning experiences that targeted Social Cognitive Theory constructs and provided skills training and practice. The purpose of the study was to test intervention materials and assessment tools …

A Social-Cognitive Theory Model To Predict Frequency Of Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Among Third-Grade Children, Agnes W. Hinton Jan 1996

A Social-Cognitive Theory Model To Predict Frequency Of Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Among Third-Grade Children, Agnes W. Hinton

All ETDs from UAB

As adequate fruit and vegetable consumption appears to offer benefits for cancer prevention, dietary improvements are an important method of risk reduction. Children often exhibit inadequate consumption and, thus, appear to be promising targets for dietary change because of potential long-term benefits. Research is needed to identify variables that influence fruit and vegetable consumption, including cultural, psychosocial, economic, and situational factors. Only a few such models are available, and most lack the specificity required for testing. Among the theories of health behavior. Social Cognitive Theory appears best suited to developing such a model. Social Cognitive Theory and an analysis of …
