Internet -Based Education In Egypt: A Pilot Project To Assess Public Health Capacity And The Potential For Distance Education Using A Randomized Controlled Comparison Of An Internet-Based Distance Education Course And A Traditional Face-To-Face Course, Rebecca Ann Noel
All ETDs from UAB
To develop a well-trained global work force, public health workers must take advantage of new opportunities to provide public health training and education. Distance education delivered via the Internet holds particular promise, especially for public health workers in developing countries. Because of the need to travel to the United States, Europe, or elsewhere, public health workers in developing countries have limited access to traditional public health training and education. Even short-courses are not cost-effective or efficient in terms of time and travel. If public health distance education delivered via the Internet could be shown to be equivalent to traditional public …

An Evaluation Study On Nutrition Rehabilitation Centers In Accra, Ghana, Esi Komeley Colecraft
All ETDs from UAB
The primary goals of nutrition rehabilitation centers (NRCs) are to recuperate malnourished children and improve caretakers' child feeding practices. Children ( N = 116) and caretakers ( N = 108) newly enrolled in four NRCs in Accra, Ghana were recruited and studied longitudinally at four time points: admission, interim, exit and postexit . Data collection included observations of activities at the NRCs, anthropometry, interviews, dietary assessments, and weighing of NRC foods. Caretaker/child pairs attended the NRCs 33% ± 21% of their total stay, and the majority (78%) discontinued participation before being officially discharged. At exit , ≥60% of children had …

Risk Factors Associated With Acute Lower Respiratory Tract Infection In A Cohort Of Newborns From Birth To 24 Months Of Age In A Rural Community Of Bangladesh, Khundkar Zahid Hasan
All ETDs from UAB
Little is known about incidence, risk factors, and etiology of acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRI) and pneumonia among the very young children from the rural communities of the developing countries. This study examined incidence and risk factors for ALRI and etiology and risk factors for pneumonia in a group of infants in Bangladesh. A cohort of 252 newborns was prospectively followed from birth to 24 months of age. Data on respiratory symptoms and feeding habits were collected routinely by household visit. Socioeconomic information was collected during census and during enrollment of the children. Laboratory tests for bacterial and viral …

Self -Reports Of Reasons For Hospitalization By Young Adults: Validity And Risk Factors For Discordance With Medical Records, S M Atiqur Rahman
All ETDs from UAB
Two studies were undertaken focusing on the validity of young adults' self-reports of reasons for hospitalization and factors affecting validity. The first study assessed the concordance of self-reports by young adults of reasons for hospitalization with their medical records, and the second examined factors associated with discordance between self-reports and medical records. The first study demonstrated that although concordance or accuracy of self-reports was more than 90% overall, for specific disease categories it ranged from 80% for infections to 100% for injuries/fractures and procedures including surgeries. There was no significant difference in degree of concordance by method of collecting self-reported …
