The purpose of this study was to differentiate patients with Alzheimer’s disease from normal aged subjects using the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Test Battery (Luria-Nebraska) and the 133 Xenon inhalation method of determining regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). In addition, correlations between rCBF detectors and Luria-Nebraska localization scales were investigated in order to ascertain possible agreement on focal areas of functional brain tissue loss. Nine subjects with Alzheimer’s disease were compared to nine normal subjects who had been matched on the basis of age, sex, race, and education. Discriminant analysis revealed 100% correct classification of all patients and normals using three of …

Most of the available literature focuses on age changes in memory with respect to storage and retrieval deficits. However, a lack of evidence exists related to some of the more basic characteristics of memory decline due to aging.

In 1960, there were 16 million persons over age 65. At present, there are 23 million persons over age 65, and about 38%, or 8.7 million, of those are over age 75. It is projected that by the year 2000, 43% of the aged will be over age 75. Only 21% of the men over 65 are employed as compared to 45% in 1960 (Benedict, 1978). The implications of the preceding statistics are alarming.
