Postnatal Testicular Development In 3 Inbred Strains Of Mice., John Howard Wilters
All ETDs from UAB
A large amount of genetic variability exists in the size and functional characteristics of male gonads between strains of inbred mice (Shire and Bartke, 1972; Hayward, 1973: Eleftheriou and Lucas, 1974). Shire and Bartke noted marked variations in both the absolute and relative postnatal testicular weights in 11 strains from 56 to 112 days of age. The relative weight (mg of testes/100g of body weight) increased for most strains. The DBA/2J strain increased by 123mg, the C57BL/6J by 84mg and the AKR/J strain by only 45mg. The C57BL/10J strain however was unique in that it showed a decrease of 235mg …

It required little perceptiveness to call this a period of transition. In a sense, all periods are transitional. Seldom, however, has the transition been so pronounced and the participants so acutely aware that they were living through a transition. Prior to 1860, as Wiebe put it, Americans lived in "island communities:" small, isolated, relatively homogeneous populations comfortable in their assumptions about the world and confident of their universal applicability.

Hetherington and Ranson (1940) demonstrated that small bilateral lesions in the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus. (VMH) produce overeating and obesity. Their observation served to focus attention on the central nervous system (CNS) as the site of systems that regulate food intake.

Research done in the 1950's demonstrated that sleep was not a homogeneous state, in fact, that it consisted of periodically recur- ring stages (Aserinsky and Kleitman, 1953). One of these stages is readily identifiable due to concurrent physiological changes: elevated temperature, increased metabolic rates, electrical brain patterns similar to those in the arousal state, and rapid eye movements. This stage has been termed "rapid eye movement sleep" (REMS), or "paradoxical sleep" (PS) due to the unusual physiological changes. Perhaps the most intriguing characteristic of REMS is its close relationship to the dream process. Subjects awakened from REMS are much more …

The striped mullet, Mugil cephalus, a valuable food resource for man, has been found in estuaries throughout the world. The present study examines changing physiological responses of the reproductive system in conjunction with the fall schooling and migratory periods.Serum gonadal steroids increased 8-10 fold from late September to the end of November for both sexes. The gonadal mass and Gonado-Somatic Index of Mugil cephalus rose rapidly in October and November returning to prespawning values in December. Fluctuations were observed in the serum total lipids, cholesterol, and triglycerides, throughout the study period. A decline in the summer followed by a sharp …

In its adaptation to a particular ecological niche, every species of animal has attained various adjustments in the timing of its reproductive efforts and in the number of offspring produced. This is especially true among reptiles, who have utilized a diversity of reproductive "strategies" while occupying many ecological habitats.
