Narcotic Utilization For Pain Patients Housed In Private And Semi-Private Rooms., Jeffrey Joseph Dolce

This investigation examined: (1) the utilization of narcotic analgesics by 40 back pain patients housed in private rooms and 40 patients housed in semi-private rooms ; and (2) the activity patterns of 10 orthopedic/pain patients housed in private rooms and 10 patients in semi-private rooms. It was postulated that patients in private rooms would experience reductions in stimulation which would lower pain tolerance and result in greater use of narcotic analgesics. It was found that pain patients housed in private rooms used more intramuscular request-contingent narcotic analgesics but not greater amounts of other types of narcotic analgesics. Room type, as …

It is estimated there are over thirty million edentulous people in the United States alone. In this population the use of conventional treatment modalities, i.e., full or partial removable dentures, has been demonstrated to result in: (1) loss of alveolar bone height with subsequent inability to retain a denture, (2) inflammation of surrounding gingival tissue with concomitant pain and decreased retentive capabilities, and (3) accelerated loss of natural supporting dentition (8,24,30). In the patient population exhibiting edentulous posterior regions (represented schematically in Figure 1), one or more of these problems are often manifested. Depending on the nature of the posterior …

Since 1969 the traditional assessment of the final fifteen years of Mark Twain's career has undergone a reversal because of the availability of the original Mysterious Stranger Manuscripts. These manuscripts, for the first time, presented three distinct versions of Twain's mysterious stranger stories. Study of these texts has revealed that after Twain's death in 1910, his editor, Albert Bigelow Paine, without Twain's prior consent, combined the body of "The Chronicle of Young Satan," the earliest version of the three different texts, with the conclusion of "No. 44, The Mysterious Stranger," the final version. The novel, published in 1916 by F.A. …

A Study Of Asymmetry In Mosquitofish Populations In Polluted And Nonpolluted Environments Using A New Scale Staining Technique., J Mark Brubaker

Levels of fluctuating asymmetry were compared in two populations of mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) from polluted waters and two populations from nonpolluted waters. Two of the characters studied, pectoral fin rays and lateral line scales, showed no asymmetry in these populations and therefore provided no data for comparisons. A third character, number of pores in the lateral line scales, showed asymmetry in all populations. Asymmetry was quantified in two ways: the absolute difference between counts on left and right sides Id I, and the number of asymmetrical scale pairs, ASP. ASP provided a more sensitive measure of asymmetry than did |d| …

Antiandrogens are defined as substances capable of selectively suppressing the biological activity of androgens at their target sites (Dorfman, 1970). In the last two decades, extensive use has been made of antiandrogens, both clinically and as a research tool. They have been used for hirsutism and related problems in women (Cittadini and Barreca, 1977), diseases of the prostate, precocious puberty (Gräf et al., 1974), male contraception (Hammerstein, 1977) and the treatment of male sex offenders (Jeffcoate et al., 1980). Additionally, they have been used as a tool to examine certain androgen-dependent processes, of which the most dramatic is the feminization …
