The Ambushed Spirit: Perspective, Violence And Downsizing, Daniela Truty

The purpose of this study was to investigate downsizing from the perspective of the person who was separated from the job, and to explore its connection to violence and peace studies. Findings suggest that experiences varied according to context and point of view and that downsizing was often a violative.

This paper uses data from the Longitudinal Study of Adult Learning to investigate how discursive and structural dimensions of social capital influence engagement in learning. The primary finding is that social capital influences formal and informal learning in opposite directions.

This paper employs Kovel’s (1991) five meditations on spirit as an analytical framework for exploring the spirituality of committed environmental activists. These meditations explicitly present spirituality as the making of spirit, that is, as bringing spirit power into one’s life through learning and doing.

In this paper, we review and critique the literature on white privilege to identify ways the Eurocentric culture undergirds our social practices in adult education. Africentrism, an alternative to Eurocentrism, will be used as an example of how the discourse can be expanded. Finally, we will offer recommendations for the field.

The qualitative study on ten educated Malays with regard to the rising political consciousness indicated their transformation is influenced by their culture. Political event can trigger a perspective transformation if it was perceived as threatening to ones communal cultural identity. The findings suggest that cultural values and religious beliefs facilitate the perspective transformation.

Historically, through different avenues, the Black Church has been culturally responsive to the needs of African American learners. One such avenue has been the African American sermon. This study explicates Critical Thinking (CT) in the respiratory care profession. An exploratory factor analysis was performed and seven measured CT behaviors were narrowed to two factors. A cluster analysis followed and three groups of practitioners were found. This empirical typology considerably expands the conception of CT in the professions.
