Effect Of Corticosteroid On Safety And Efficacy For Actinic Keratosis Therapy With Ingenol Mebutate, Shreya Amin
Effect Of Corticosteroid On Safety And Efficacy For Actinic Keratosis Therapy With Ingenol Mebutate, Shreya Amin
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Actinic keratoses are common premalignant lesions that occur in fair-skinned individuals with high cumulative ultraviolet exposure. Monotherapy with ingenol mebutate has been known to cause local skin reactions, such as erythema, which reduces safety. Clobetasol propionate has worked well with other actinic keratosis therapies to reduce inflammation, but its role with ingenol mebutate is not well understood. The effect of concurrent application of clobetasol propionate with ingenol mebutate to reduce local skin reactions without impacting efficacy has not yet been investigated. We are proposing a superiority trial for safety as well as a non-inferiority trial for effectiveness. We will conduct …
Reducing Mortality From Septic Shock Using An Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist, Juyeon Chung
Reducing Mortality From Septic Shock Using An Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist, Juyeon Chung
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Septic shock, a severe inflammatory state secondary to a bacterial infection with refractory hypotension and tissue hypoperfusion despite adequate fluid resuscitation, is a leading cause of mortality in intensive care units worldwide. The mortality rate of septic shock patients can exceed 40% in the U.S., highlighting the need for more effective therapies. Anakinra, an inflammatory cytokine inhibitor, has been identified as a potential therapy for reducing various inflammatory states such as sepsis. Our aim is to evaluate the efficacy of anakinra in reducing mortality in patients with septic shock. This double-blind, randomized control trial will compare the 28-day mortality of …
The Impact Of Social Support On Diet Quality In Stroke Survivors, Sarah Rocks
The Impact Of Social Support On Diet Quality In Stroke Survivors, Sarah Rocks
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in the United States, and nearly 25% of strokes are repeat events. Secondary prevention strategies are needed to reduce the disabling sequelae of recurrences. Dietary modification to include more fruits, vegetables, and polyunsaturated fats is a promising tactic. If stroke leads to disability, patients may not be able to cook or grocery shop for themselves. Thus, one factor that may influence diet quality is social support, but its effect on post-stroke diet has not been assessed. In this cross-sectional study, we will examine the association between social support and diet quality …
Socialism Revised, John E. Roemer
Socialism Revised, John E. Roemer
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Marxists have viewed the task of socialism as the elimination of exploitation, defined in the Marxian manner in terms the excess of labor expended over of labor commanded. I argue that the concept of Marxian exploitation commits both type-one (false positives) and type-two (false negatives) errors as a diagnosis of distributive injustice: it misses instances of distributive injustice because they do not involve exploitation, and it calls some economic relations characterized by exploitation unjust when they are not. The most important reformulators of Marx’s concept of socialism, which implicitly or explicitly attempt to correct the Marxian errors, are Oscar Lange, …
Dynamic Random Utility, Mira Frick, Ryota Iijima, Tomasz Strzalecki
Dynamic Random Utility, Mira Frick, Ryota Iijima, Tomasz Strzalecki
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Under dynamic random utility, an agent (or population of agents) solves a dynamic decision problem subject to evolving private information. We analyze the fully general and non-parametric model, axiomatically characterizing the implied dynamic stochastic choice behavior. A key new feature relative to static or i.i.d. versions of the model is that when private information displays serial correlation, choices appear history dependent: different sequences of past choices reflect different private information of the agent, and hence typically lead to different distributions of current choices. Our axiomatization imposes discipline on the form of history dependence that can arise under arbitrary serial correlation. …

The Best And Worst Of All Possible Worlds: Some Crude Evaluations, Martin Shubik, Michael R. Powers
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
The 2 x 2 matrix game plays a central role in the teaching and exposition of game theory. It is also the source of much experimentation and research in political science, social psychology, biology and other disciplines. This brief paper is addressed to answering one intuitively simple question without going into the many subtle qualifications that are there. How efficient is the non-cooperative equilibrium? This is part of a series of several papers that address many of the qualifications concerning the uses of the 2 x 2 matrix games.
A Design For Market Socialism, John E. Roemer
A Design For Market Socialism, John E. Roemer
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Socialism is conceptualized as a society in which individuals cooperate, distinguished from capitalism, characterized as involving ubiquitous economic competition. Here, I embed a formal model of cooperation in an Arrow-Debreu model, using the Kantian optimization protocol, and define a Walras-Kant equilibrium, in which firms maximize profits, consumers choose demands for commodities in the usual utilitymaximizing fashion, and the state rents capital to firms. The labor-supply decision of workers, however, is arrived at using the cooperative protocol. Incomes are redistributed through a flat income tax. Walras-Kant equilibria, with any desired degree of income equality exist, are decentralizable, and are Pareto efficient.

Dynamic Random Utility, Mira Frick, Ryota Iijima, Tomasz Strzalecki
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We provide an axiomatic analysis of dynamic random utility, characterizing the stochastic choice behavior of agents who solve dynamic decision problems by maximizing some stochastic process (U_t) of utilities. We show first that even when (U_t) is arbitrary, dynamic random utility imposes new testable restrictions on how behavior across periods is related, over and above period-by-period analogs of the static random utility axioms: An important feature of dynamic random utility is that behavior may appear history dependent, because past choices reveal information about agents’ past utilities and (U_t) may be serially correlated; however, our key new axioms highlight that the …

Chinese Wines And Foreign Urns: Making Objects Of Lyric, Ryan Matthew Hintzman
Chinese Wines And Foreign Urns: Making Objects Of Lyric, Ryan Matthew Hintzman
Student Work
A 2016-2017 William Prize for best essay in East Asian Studies was awarded to Ryan Matthew Hintzman (Silliman College '17) for his essay submitted to the Department of Comparative Literature, "Chinese Wines and Foreign Urns: Making Objects of Lyric.” (Edward Kamens, Sumitomo Professor of Japanese Studies, advisor.)
Ryan Hintzman’s essay, Chinese Wines and Foreign Urns: Making Objects of Lyric is a work of awe-inspiring erudition, vision, and ambition. Ranging far and wide among traditional and more recent theories of the lyric and moving boldly from 8th century poems in Japanese to 19th and 20th century poems in English, Hintzman …

A Coffee-Scented Space: Historical, Cultural, And Social Impacts Of The Japanese Kissaten, Claire A. Williamson
Student Work
A 2016-2017 William Prize for best essay in East Asian Studies was awarded to Claire Williamson (Jonathan Edwards College '17) for her essay submitted to the East Asian Studies Program, “A Coffee-Scented Space: Historical, Cultural, and Social Impacts of the Japanese Kissaten.” (William Kelly, Professor of Anthropology and Sumitomo Professor of Japanese Studies, advisor.)
Japan has a long and well-documented history as a tea culture, from everyday practices to the refined aesthetics of the tea ceremony and its associated arts. Yet modern Japan is also a highly developed culture of coffee, and this is the topic that Claire Williamson …
