Intertemporal Price Discrimination In Sequential Quantity-Price Games, James D. Dana Jr., Kevin R. Williams Jun 2018

Intertemporal Price Discrimination In Sequential Quantity-Price Games, James D. Dana Jr., Kevin R. Williams

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

When firms first choose capacity and then compete on prices in a series of advance-purchase markets, we show that strong competitive forces prevent firms from utilizing intertemporal price discrimination. We then enrich the model by allowing firms to use inventory controls, or sales limits assigned to individual prices. We show that firms will choose to set inventory controls in order to engage in intertemporal price discrimination, but only if demand becomes more inelastic over time. Thus, although typically viewed as a tool to manage demand uncertainty, we show that inventory controls can also facilitate price discrimination in oligopoly.

Understanding Temporal Aggregation Effects On Kurtosis In Financial Indices, Offer Lieberman, Peter C.B. Phillips Jun 2018

Understanding Temporal Aggregation Effects On Kurtosis In Financial Indices, Offer Lieberman, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Indices of financial returns typically display sample kurtosis that declines towards the Gaussian value 3 as the sampling interval increases. This paper uses stochastic unit root (STUR) and continuous time analysis to explain the phenomenon. Limit theory for the sample kurtosis reveals that STUR specifications provide two sources of excess kurtosis, both of which decline with the sampling interval. Limiting kurtosis is shown to be random and is a functional of the limiting price process. Using a continuous time version of the model under no-drift, local drift, and drift inclusions, we suggest a new continuous time kurtosis measure for financial …

Intertemporal Price Discrimination In Sequential Quantity-Price Games, James D. Dana Jr., Kevin R. Williams

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper develops an oligopoly model in which firms first choose capacity and then compete in prices in a series of advance-purchase markets. We show the existence of multiple sales opportunities creates strong competitive forces that prevent firms from utilizing intertemporal price discrimination. We then show that intertemporal price discrimination is possible, but only when firms adopt inventory controls (sales limit restrictions) and demand becomes more inelastic over time. Therefore, in addition to being useful to manage demand uncertainty, inventory controls are also a tool to soften price competition. We also discuss model extensions, including product differentiation, aggregate demand uncertainty, …

Alternative Marriage Practices Of Wartime Urban China In Discourse And Practice (1937-1949), Charlotte Cotter

Student Work

A 2017-2018 William Prize for best essay in East Asian Studies was awarded to Charlotte Cotter (Grace Hopper College '18) for her essay submitted to the East Asian Studies Program, "Alternative Marriage Practices of Wartime Urban China in Discourse and Practice (1937-1949)” (Peter C. Perdue, Professor of History, advisor).

Charlotte Cotter’s thesis, “Alternative Marriage Practices of Wartime Urban China in Discourse and Practice (1937-1949)” is an excellent study of how women in Shanghai during wartime explored different modes of intimate life, including alternate forms of marriage, when the upheaval of war tore apart families and disrupted personal relations. Throughout …

Researcher Access To Born-Digital Collections: An Exploratory Study, Julia Y. Kim May 2018

Researcher Access To Born-Digital Collections: An Exploratory Study, Julia Y. Kim

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

While a small, but growing number of institutions offer access to born-digital collections, there is scant literature documenting researcher interaction with these materials. This paper addresses this gap through documenting and analyzing researcher interactions to portions of born-digital collections at New York University (NYU) Libraries, with the cooperation of NYU’s Fales Library and Special Collection and the Digital Library and Technology Solutions Department, as well as the National Digital Stewardship Residency (NDSR) program. From September 2014-May 2015, NYU Libraries began implementing an “access-driven” born-digital workflow for their 3 archives: Fales Library and Special Collections, NYU University Archives, and the Tamiment …

Moving Toward A Reparative Archive: A Roadmap For A Holistic Approach To Disrupting Homogenous Histories In Academic Repositories And Creating Inclusive Spaces For Marginalized Voices, Lae'l Hughes-Watkins

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

In 2013, Kent State University’s Department of Special Collections and Archives launched the Black Campus Movement (BCM) Collection Development project to acknowledge the imperfection of past collection development practices that resulted in a scarcity of documentation from historically underrepresented communities. The department ventured to strengthen its holdings by acquiring records relating to the university’s rich, multilayered and diverse narratives, specifically the narratives of black student activism, 1968–1971. The Kent State shootings on May 4, 1970, resulting in the death of four white students, changed the trajectory of the Vietnam War and introduced a new discourse into the predominately white antiwar …

Exploring The American Archivist: Corpus Analysis Tools And The Professional Literature, J. Gordon Daines Iii, Cory L. Nimer, Jacob R. Lee

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

The literature of a professional community provides insights into what members of that community value and underscores key professional issues. Periodic analyses of professional literature are an important way for these communities to identify trends that deserve further exploration. This article introduces the use of corpus analysis tools such as Voyant Tools and discusses their value in performing periodic analyses of professional literature. As an example, it presents a limited study examining the use of the term “theory” in the American Archivist.

Prognostic Utility Of Tricuspid Annular Plane Systolic Excursion In Pulmonary Embolism, Matthew Drause May 2018

Prognostic Utility Of Tricuspid Annular Plane Systolic Excursion In Pulmonary Embolism, Matthew Drause

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Inpatient mortality for hemodynamically stable patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) averages 5-10%. Tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), a reliable and reproducible measure of right ventricular (RV) dysfunction has been shown to identify patients with worse prognosis in the cardiology literature, but prognostic utility of TAPSE using point-of-care echocardiogram (FOCUS) in the emergency department (ED) population is sparse. We propose that in a prospective cohort of patients with confirmed PE, those with TAPSE less than 15mm on FOCUS will have greater overall mortality and need for escalation of care than those with TAPSE greater than 17mm. We will enroll and …

Telehealth-Based Gay-Affirmative Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Young Gay And Bisexual Men In The Rural South, Andrew Mccormick Cook May 2018

Telehealth-Based Gay-Affirmative Cognitive Behavioral Therapy For Young Gay And Bisexual Men In The Rural South, Andrew Mccormick Cook

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Young rural gay and bisexual men suffer a disproportionate burden of psychiatric disorders compared to their urban and heterosexual counterparts because of the increased stigma-related stressors they face. Co-occurring mental and behavioral health problems often affect them, including depression and substance use disorders. In two randomized controlled trials, a gay-affirmative cognitive behavioral therapy called Effective Skills to Empower Effective Men significantly decreased alcohol use, and improved mental health outcomes among urban gay and bisexual men by targeting stigma-related stress responses. However, the intervention’s efficacy has not been studied among rural populations. In a randomized controlled trial, we propose to deliver …

Revenue Guarantee Equivalence, Dirk Bergemann, Benjamin Brooks, Stephen Morris May 2018

Revenue Guarantee Equivalence, Dirk Bergemann, Benjamin Brooks, Stephen Morris

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

We revisit the revenue comparison of standard auction formats, including first-price, second-price, and English auctions. We rank auctions according to their revenue guarantees, i.e., the greatest lower bound of revenue across all informational environments, where we hold fixed the distribution of bidders' values. We conclude that if we restrict attention to the symmetric affiliated models of Milgrom and Weber (1982) and monotonic pure-strategy equilibria, first-price, second-price, and English auctions all have the same revenue guarantee, which is equal to that of the first-price auction as characterized by Bergemann, Brooks, and Morris (2017a). If we consider all equilibria or if we …

First-Price Auctions With General Information Structures: A Short Introduction, Dirk Bergemann, Benjamin Brooks, Stephen Morris

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

In a recent paper, [Bergemann et al. 2017a], we derive results about equilibrium behavior in the first-price auction that hold across all common-prior information structures. The purpose of this letter is to give an informal introduction into the results. At the end we offer a brief discussion of related work.

Asymptotic Theory For Near Integrated Process Driven By Tempered Linear Process, Farzad Sabzikar, Qiying Wang, Peter C.B. Phillips May 2018

Asymptotic Theory For Near Integrated Process Driven By Tempered Linear Process, Farzad Sabzikar, Qiying Wang, Peter C.B. Phillips

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper develops an asymptotic theory for near-integrated random processes and some associated regressions when the errors are tempered linear processes. Tempered processes are stationary time series that have a semi-long memory property in the sense that the autocovariogram of the process resembles that of a long memory model for moderate lags but eventually diminishes exponentially fast according to the presence of a decay factor governed by a tempering parameter. When the tempering parameter is sample size dependent, the resulting class of processes admits a wide range of behavior that includes both long memory, semi-long memory, and short memory processes. …

Risk For Cardiovascular Diseases In Prostate Cancer Patients Treated With Androgen Deprivation: A Population-Based Cohort Study, Lei Jiang May 2018

Risk For Cardiovascular Diseases In Prostate Cancer Patients Treated With Androgen Deprivation: A Population-Based Cohort Study, Lei Jiang

Public Health Theses

Background: Previous studies evaluating the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in prostate cancer patients receiving androgen deprivation treatment (ADT) often did not distinguish different types of ADT.

Methods: We conducted a large, retrospective cohort study using the linked Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results - Medicare database, including patients with primary localized prostate cancer diagnosed in 2007--2013 and followed through the end of 2014. Time dependent multivariable Cox proportional hazards models with death as the competing risk were used to evaluate the association between ADT (overall, and two subtypes: gonadotropin-releasing hormone [GnRH] agonists and oral antiandrogens) and incidence of CVD. …
