National Asset Management Agency (Nama) In Ireland, Alexander Nye
National Asset Management Agency (Nama) In Ireland, Alexander Nye
Documents
When the aftermath of the September 2008 collapse of Lehman Brothers burst a long-running real estate bubble in Ireland, it triggered a banking crisis. In spite of various responses by the Irish government, the financial viability of Ireland's banks (as well as the government's fiscal position) continued to deteriorate in early 2009 (Bacon 2009, 8-9). The Irish government attributed the problem to impaired real estate assets sitting on bank balance sheets and created the National Asset Management Agency (NAMA), a majority privately owned asset management company (AMC), to remove these assets from the banks (Carroll and Dodd 2012, 8-9). From …

Curating Care: Creativity, Women’S Work, And The Carers Uk Archive, Alice Hall, Hannah Tweed
Curating Care: Creativity, Women’S Work, And The Carers Uk Archive, Alice Hall, Hannah Tweed
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
This article analyses the previously unexplored archives of the British charity, Carers UK, and its predecessor organizations, from its formation in 1965 to the present day. We argue that the archive is a valuable resource for social, political, and economic histories of care in the home, women’s work, feminist campaigns, and charitable organizations in the UK and beyond. It gives voice to traditionally silenced populations of carers through a strikingly diverse range of letters, edited collections of fiction, minutes of meetings, video diaries, newsletters, and anthologies of creative writing. As a case study, the Carers UK archive provides an important …
Recognizing Co-Creators In Four Configurations: Critical Questions For Web Archiving, Amy Wickner
Recognizing Co-Creators In Four Configurations: Critical Questions For Web Archiving, Amy Wickner
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Four categories of co-creator shape web archivists' practice and influence the development of web archives: social forces, users and uses, subjects of web archives, and technical agents. This paper illustrates how these categories of co-creator overlap and interact in four specific web archiving contexts. It recommends that web archivists acknowledge this complex array of contributors as a way to imagine web archives differently. A critical approach to web archiving recognizes relationships and blended roles among stakeholders; seeks opportunities for non-extractive archival activity; and acknowledges the value of creative reuse as an important aspect of preservation.
The Strategy Of Using Social Networks In The Arab Archives, Elsayed Salah Elsawy
The Strategy Of Using Social Networks In The Arab Archives, Elsayed Salah Elsawy
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
This study analyzes the use of social networks in the Arab national archives, the availability of a strategy for their use (objectives, content), and the numbers and specialization of staff managing and updating the archives’ content on social networks. It also examines which social platforms are used by archives, the number of their participants and followers, and to what extent the content of archives’ social platforms is archived. The study included twelve Arab national archives, as well as examples of foreign archives, to understand their strategy for using social networks. The study found that Arab national archives do not have …

Lessons From The 1800s: Creating The Miss Porter's School Digital Archive, Deborah Smith
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
College preparatory (“prep”) schools have their roots in the New England region of the United States; many predate the nation's most illustrious colleges and universities. The archives at these schools contain items of importance to American history in the 1800s. However, few schools have trained archivists managing their physical collections and even fewer have created digital archives to increase access. Founded in 1848, Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut was one of the first independent schools devoted to the education of young women. This article reviews the creation of the Porter's digital archive in 2018 and examines issues specific to …

Not 'Just My Problem To Handle': Emerging Themes On Secondary Trauma And Archivists, Katie Sloan, Jennifer Vanderfluit, Jennifer Douglas
Not 'Just My Problem To Handle': Emerging Themes On Secondary Trauma And Archivists, Katie Sloan, Jennifer Vanderfluit, Jennifer Douglas
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
This article reports on the findings of a survey issued to Canadian archivists regarding their understanding and experiences of secondary trauma. As exploratory research, the article summarizes findings of the survey and identifies emerging themes based on qualitative analysis of the open-ended questions. Emerging themes relate to the difficulty of defining what constitutes a traumatic record; working with donors and researchers; the effects of organizational culture and archival professional norms; the impact of precarious labor on experiences of trauma; and the role of archival education programs and professional associations in preparing and supporting archivists to work with difficult materials. The …

Review Of The Self As Subject: Autoethnographic Research Into Identity, Culture, And Academic Librarianship, Emily D. Dileo
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Academic librarians have complex and numerous professional identities. We are researchers, teachers, artists, administrators and technologists. Many of us have advanced degrees in other fields, in which we may or may not remain active. We experience burnout and impostor syndrome, experience and confront racism in our workplaces, and are strongly affected by university politics and bureaucracy. In The Self as Subject: Autoethnographic Research into Identity, Culture, and Academic Librarianship, the authors tease out these complexities using autoethnographic methodology.

Migration And Informal Insurance, Costas Meghir, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak, Corina Mommaerts, Melanie Morten
Migration And Informal Insurance, Costas Meghir, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak, Corina Mommaerts, Melanie Morten
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Do new migration opportunities for rural households change the nature and extent of informal risk sharing? We experimentally document that randomly offering poor rural households subsidies to migrate leads to a 40% improvement in risk sharing in their villages. Our model of endogenous migration and risk sharing shows that risky and temporary migration opportunities can induce an improvement in risk sharing enabling profitable migration. Accounting for improved risk sharing, the migration experiment increased welfare by 12.9%. However, permanent declines in migration costs improve outside options for households and can lead to reductions in risk sharing. The short-run experimental results for …

Migration And Informal Insurance, Costas Meghir, Ahmed Mushfiq Mobarak, Corina Mommaerts, Melanie Morten
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We document that an experimental intervention offering transport subsidies for poor rural households to migrate seasonally in Bangladesh improved risk sharing. A theoretical model of endogenous migration and risk sharing shows that the effect of subsidizing migration depends on the underlying economic environment. If migration is risky, a temporary subsidy can induce an improvement in risk sharing and enable profitable migration. We estimate the model and find that the migration experiment increased welfare by 12.9%. Counterfactual analysis suggests that a permanent, rather than temporary, decline in migration costs in the same environment would result in a reduction in risk sharing.

"Its Cargo Is People": Repositioning Commuter Rail As Public Transit To Save The New York–New Haven Line, 1960–1990, Seamus C. Joyce-Johnson
Harvey M. Applebaum ’59 Award
This essay explores the creation of the Metro-North Railroad in 1983 as a public agency to provide commuter train services on the New York–New Haven Line. The essay begins by bringing out the central role commuter rail services played in the negotiations over the New Haven Railroad’s bankruptcy in the 1960s. I argue that New Haven Line’s near liquidation during the bankruptcy prompted advocacy from commuters, urban planners, and politicians that pushed back against the trend towards automobile-centric urban transportation planning. In the next section, I use the New Haven Line’s subsequent operation in the 1970s under subsidy arrangements with …
Renewable Energy Access And Resilience In Urban Developing Areas: Distributed Solar Networks And Peer-To-Peer Energy Trading In Puerto Rico, Pascale Bronder
Renewable Energy Access And Resilience In Urban Developing Areas: Distributed Solar Networks And Peer-To-Peer Energy Trading In Puerto Rico, Pascale Bronder
Harvey M. Applebaum ’59 Award
This senior essay under the Environmental Studies major at Yale University explores the environmental and social benefits of applying innovative technology to the energy sector. Three types of energy networks are analyzed, focusing on the use of distributed energy and peer to peer energy trading on a blockchain platform. The benefits of distributed renewable energy networks can most strongly be applied to locations in need of more reliable, resilient, and cost-effective electricity. Puerto Rico is a case study. Methods include analysis of U.S. Energy Information Administration and Census Bureau data as well as personal interviews with Puerto Rican energy developers. …

Inference In Moment Inequality Models That Is Robust To Spurious Precision Under Model Misspecification, Donald W.K. Andrews, Soonwoo Kwon
Inference In Moment Inequality Models That Is Robust To Spurious Precision Under Model Misspecification, Donald W.K. Andrews, Soonwoo Kwon
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Standard tests and confidence sets in the moment inequality literature are not robust to model misspecification in the sense that they exhibit spurious precision when the identified set is empty. This paper introduces tests and confidence sets that provide correct asymptotic inference for a pseudo-true parameter in such scenarios, and hence, do not suffer from spurious precision.

Does Eviction Cause Poverty? Quasi-Experimental Evidence From Cook County, Il, John Eric Humphries, Nicholas Mader, Daniel Tannenbaum, Winnie Van Dijk
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
Each year, more than two million U.S. households have an eviction case filed against them. Many cities have recently implemented policies aimed at reducing the number of evictions, motivated by research showing strong associations between being evicted and subsequent adverse economic outcomes. Yet it is difficult to determine to what extent those associations represent causal relationships, because eviction itself is likely to be a consequence of adverse life events. This paper addresses that challenge and offers new causal evidence on how eviction affects financial distress, residential mobility, and neighborhood quality. We collect the near-universe of Cook County court records over …
