Hiv Testing During Antenatal Care In Eastern & Southern Africa: How Do Adolescents And Young Women Fare?, Claire Young
Hiv Testing During Antenatal Care In Eastern & Southern Africa: How Do Adolescents And Young Women Fare?, Claire Young
Public Health Theses
Background
To validate Elimination of Mother to Child HIV Transmission (eMTCT), pregnant women must receive antenatal care (ANC) HIV testing. Given challenges for adolescent girls in ANC, we hypothesized that adolescents were less likely to receive ANC HIV testing in Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA).
Methods
For 10 ESA countries, we use 2015-2018 Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) to study 46,056 women attending ANC and giving birth in the last three years. We used age-stratified (15-19, 20-24, and 25-49 years of age at time of delivery) crude and adjusted logistic regressions to assess predictive factors for ANC HIV testing, both …
Solid Fuel-Related Indoor Air Pollution And Poor Sleep Quality In Adults Aged 45 Years And Older; A National Longitudinal Study In China, Haiqing Yu
Public Health Theses
Background: Sleep disorders are a common public health issue in an aging society. Outdoor air pollution has been linked to poor sleep quality, but few studies have investigated the relationship between indoor air pollution derived from solid fuel combustion and sleep quality in elderly.
Objective: To evaluate the association between indoor air pollution due to cooking solid fuels and sleep quality among adults aged 45 years and elderly in China.
Methods: We analyzed data from the China Health and Retirement Survey (CHARLS), a national survey of ~17,000 residents aged over 45 from 150 counties/districts in China. Participants were restricted to …
The Impact Of Cognitive Decline On Decision-Making Among Older Persons In China, Quan Yuan
The Impact Of Cognitive Decline On Decision-Making Among Older Persons In China, Quan Yuan
Public Health Theses
Decision-making among the older population is of importance as older persons make critically consequential decisions on daily errands, household financials, and care-seeking that affect the remainder of their lives. Despite the increasing prevalence rate of cognitive impairment in developing countries, many questions surrounding the impact of cognitive impairment on decision-making among older persons remain unexplored. Therefore, using data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), this study helps bridge the gap in the existing literature by examining the effect of cognitive decline on decision-making among the older population in China. We first investigate the association between an individual's cognitive …
Intimate Partner Violence, Colorism, And Stress Coping In Barbados, Nkandu Yumbe
Intimate Partner Violence, Colorism, And Stress Coping In Barbados, Nkandu Yumbe
Public Health Theses
Persons who experience intimate partner violence (IPV) have higher rates of chronic disease. This is thought to be due, in part, to the adoption of health risk coping behaviors, as well as the detrimental biological response to chronic stress associated with violence. The role of colorism (perceived skin tone discrimination) in the experiences of victims of IPV, their stress and stress coping behaviors has not previously been examined. The objective of this study was to explore the intersecting experience of black skin, coping strategies and stress among women with IPV histories in Barbados. Women above the age of 18, who …

Increasing Access To Interventional Pain Management Therapies For Palliative Care Patients With Cancer Through Referral System Improvement, Ewelina Karolina Gibek
Increasing Access To Interventional Pain Management Therapies For Palliative Care Patients With Cancer Through Referral System Improvement, Ewelina Karolina Gibek
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Introduction: The need for palliative care increases as the number of patients continues to grow due to the aging population and rising cancer rates. Pain management is one of the essential components of palliative care. Anesthesia providers are well-positioned to become active members of palliative care teams and to provide pain management services, including regional and interventional therapies to patients in the acute care setting. Due to lack of awareness of the need, there have been few referrals for these services. Consequently, despite anesthesia providers’ knowledge of pain management and anesthesia care delivery, they have not been consistently involved in …

Diabetes Education Revisited: Addressing Inpatient Diabetes Care Through An Interactive Educational Video Module For Registered Nurses, Abigail Tamru
Yale School of Nursing Digital Theses
Insulin is the most common medication used to treat patients with diabetes in the inpatient setting. Among injectable drugs, insulin has the highest risk for error, which may result in dire consequences for patients. Registered nurses are among the main groups of clinicians that work with insulin, yet they may sometimes lack the comprehensive knowledge associated with inpatient diabetes care and insulin. The purpose of this project is to educate registered nurses at a major academic medical center about inpatient diabetes management focused on insulin therapy. The educational content was based on a medical error analysis and a current inpatient …

Describing Web Archives: A Computer-Assisted Approach, Gregory Wiedeman
Describing Web Archives: A Computer-Assisted Approach, Gregory Wiedeman
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Currently, web archives are challenging for users to discover and use. Many archives and libraries are actively collecting web archives, but description in this area has been dominated by bibliographic approaches, which do not connect web archives to existing description or contextual information, and have often resulted in format-based silos. This is primarily because web archiving tools such as Archive-It arrange materials by seeds and groups of seeds, which reflect the complex technical process of web crawling or web recording, and are often not very meaningful to users or helpful for discovery. This article makes the case for arranging and …
Review Of Sustainable Thinking: Ensuring Your Library’S Future In An Uncertain World, Ben Goldman
Review Of Sustainable Thinking: Ensuring Your Library’S Future In An Uncertain World, Ben Goldman
Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies
Sustainable Thinking: Ensuring Your Library’s Future in an Uncertain World explores strategies for how public libraries can become more sustainable organizations in a time of social and environmental disruptions. Sustainability, viewed through the lens of triple bottom line accounting, can be accomplished by understanding and prioritizing the needs of the communities that libraries serve. While not written with archives in mind, the book offers important insights for archivists, who collectively must do more to prepare for climate-driven disruptions to their work.

Hardware-Entangled Software Execution Using Dynamic Pufs, Wenjie Xiong
Hardware-Entangled Software Execution Using Dynamic Pufs, Wenjie Xiong
Yale Day of Data
Low-end computing devices are becoming increasingly ubiquitous, especially due to the widespread deployment of Internet-of-Things products. There is, however, much concern about sensitive data being processed on these low-end devices which have limited protection mechanisms in place. This paper proposes a Hardware-Entangled Software Protection (HESP) scheme that leverages hardware features to protect software code from malicious modification before or during run-time. It also enables implicit hardware authentication. Thus, the software will execute correctly only on an authorized device and if the timing of the software, e.g., control flow, was not changed through malicious modifications. The proposed ideas are based on …

Temporally Consistent Urban-Rural Delineations For Global Urban Heat Island Monitoring, Tc Chakraborty
Temporally Consistent Urban-Rural Delineations For Global Urban Heat Island Monitoring, Tc Chakraborty
Yale Day of Data
Urbanization leads to local-scale modification of climate, particularly the urban heat island (UHI) effect - the high temperature in cities compared to their surroundings. The UHI effect is generally quantified by measuring the temperature differential between the city and its surrounding rural reference. Choices of both the city and the rural reference are prone to assumptions, which may affect, among other things, temporal variability in UHI intensity. To reduce these uncertainties, I create a global dataset of urban-rural delineations that can be used to better constrain the temporal trends in UHI intensity throughout the globe using the European Space Agency's …
