Context Of Injury Among Abusive And Accidental Injuries In Children, Lindsay Eysenbach
Context Of Injury Among Abusive And Accidental Injuries In Children, Lindsay Eysenbach
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Child physical abuse is a significant public health challenge with an incidence of approximately 6.4 hospitalized cases per 100,000 children. Many abused children, however, will go undiagnosed by physicians evaluating these injuries. Assessing whether a child has been abused is a high-stakes decision: a missed case leaves a child vulnerable to future injury, but an inaccurate diagnosis of abuse may be greatly disruptive and stigmatizing to children and their families. Previous research has established key physical examination and radiographic findings that are associated with abusive injury. A gap in the literature, however, is the role of additional injury circumstances and …
Genetic Investigation Reveals Novel Pathways For Disease Pathogenesis In Inherited And Mosaic Skin Disorders, Shayan Cheraghlou
Genetic Investigation Reveals Novel Pathways For Disease Pathogenesis In Inherited And Mosaic Skin Disorders, Shayan Cheraghlou
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Introduction
Genetic mosaicism underlies many inherited and acquired cutaneous disorders. Despite the barriers to genetic analysis of mosaic disorders, next generation sequencing has led to substantial progress in understanding their pathogenesis, which has significant implications for clinical management and genetic counselling. Advances in paired and deep sequencing technologies in particular have made study of mosaic disorders more feasible. In this study, we aim to utilize next generation sequencing technologies in order to evaluate the genetic cause of three mosaic cutaneous disorders: epidermolytic acanthoma (EA), progressive symmetric erythrokeratodermia (PSEK), and mosaic childhood acantholytic dyskeratosis.

Using genomic DNA extracted from paraffin-embedded …
The Cost-Effectiveness Of Culture Vs Naat Based Screening Of Pregnant Women For Group B Streptococcus To Reduce Early-Onset Sepsis Of The Newborn, Bertie Geng
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
While great progress has been made to reduce its incidence, group B streptococcus (GBS) is still a leading cause of neonatal disease. Current standard of care recommends antepartum rectovaginal GBS culture of all pregnant women at 36 weeks of gestation in order to identify candidates for intrapartum prophylaxis to reduce vertical transmission. The purpose of the study is to assess three alternative nucleic acid amplification (NAAT) screening strategies for GBS: antepartum NAAT at 36 weeks, intrapartum NAAT, or a combined intrapartum and antepartum approach in which patients with penicillin allergies undergo antepartum culture screening and all other patients undergo intrapartum …

Antioxidant Compounds From Marine Seaweeds And Their Mechanism Of Action, Trishna Debnath, Eun-Kyung Kim, Kwang-Geun Lee, Narayan Chandra Debnath, Ramkumar Mathur
Journal of Marine Research
Investigation of natural products has moved toward marine environments as they are a source of many biologically active agents. The natural antioxidant compounds isolated from seaweeds provide a valuable contribution to the innovation of new drugs for chronic diseases associated with oxidative stress. While the antioxidant activity and nutritional benefits of various seaweed products are well recognized, their proper utilization as antioxidants remains at initial stages that require further investigative studies. This review provides a detailed study of isolated antioxidant compounds from seaweeds and their major mechanism of action by focusing on the reports from 2015 to 2019. The report …
Effects Of Hard Clam (Mercenaria Mercenaria) Density And Bottom Shear Stress On Cohesive Sediment Erodibility And Implications For Benthic-Pelagic Coupling, Elka T. Porter, Barbara J. Johnson, Lawrence P. Sanford
Effects Of Hard Clam (Mercenaria Mercenaria) Density And Bottom Shear Stress On Cohesive Sediment Erodibility And Implications For Benthic-Pelagic Coupling, Elka T. Porter, Barbara J. Johnson, Lawrence P. Sanford
Journal of Marine Research
The interacting effects of little neck hard clam (Mercenaria mercenaria) density and bottom shear stress on cohesive sediment erodibility were investigated. Short-term stepwise erosion experiments in 30 and 40 cm diameter Gust microcosms over a range of 0.0083 to 0.1932 Pa were performed using sequential 20-minute constant shear stress steps while sampling turbidity regularly. In addition, sediment erodibility was monitored in two one-month long ecosystem experiments with tidal resuspension and 0, 10, and 50 hard clams in 1 m3 shear turbulence resuspension mesocosms (STURM) with an initial stepwise erosion experiment (0.313 to 0.444 Pa). In short-term erosion …
Editor's Commentary: Steady Flow In A Frictionless Homogenous Ocean, Kenneth H. Brink
Editor's Commentary: Steady Flow In A Frictionless Homogenous Ocean, Kenneth H. Brink
Journal of Marine Research
Before the publication of this article, Stommel (1948) and Munk (1950) published their linear, frictional models of steady wind-driven ocean gyres. The innovative advance they introduced was that their models included western boundary currents (e.g., the Gulf Stream)for the first time. These were really exciting advances. Yet, these models had some dreamlike qualities (to paraphrase Stommel) in that the flow patterns were very smooth, that the intense current always hugged the western boundary, and that the eastward interior flow is broadly distributed across latitudes...

Inference Of Natural Selection In Human Populations And Cancers: Testing, Extending, And Complementing Dn/Ds-Like Approaches, William Meyerson
Inference Of Natural Selection In Human Populations And Cancers: Testing, Extending, And Complementing Dn/Ds-Like Approaches, William Meyerson
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Heritable traits tend to rise or fall in prevalence over time in accordance with their effect on survival and reproduction; this is the law of natural selection, the driving force behind speciation. Natural selection is both a consequence and (in cancer) a cause of disease. The new abundance of sequencing data has spurred the development of computational techniques to infer the strength of selection across a genome. One technique, dN/dS, compares mutation rates at mutation-tolerant synonymous sites with those at nonsynonymous sites to infer selection. This dissertation tests, extends, and complements dN/dS for inferring selection from sequencing data. First, I …

Do Associated Mri Findinds Improve The Detection Of Elusive Encephaloceles?, Lovemore Makusha
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Objective: Encephaloceles are difficult to detect on imaging, leading to missed diagnosis for many years. Herein, we aim to describe encephalocele MR characteristics to enhance detection and interpretation of an abnormality that underlies intractable temporal lobe epilepsy of approximately 10% of patients. We postulate that some MR features that are easier to visualize than encephaloceles, such as CSF clefts or cortical distortions, along with MR signs of increased ICP such as empty sella and Meckel’s cave dilation, should raise neuroradiologists’ suspicion of potential encephaloceles, and hence improve their detection.
Subjects and Methods: We performed a retrospective study on consecutive patients …
A Systematic Review Of Cost-Effectiveness Analyses On Endovascular Thrombectomy In Ischemic Stroke Patients, Xiao Wu
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
The purpose of this study was to examine the practice of recent cost-effectiveness analyses (CEA) on endovascular treatment (EVT) in ischemic stroke patients, with a particularly focus on methodological conduct of accounting for costs and utilities.
We performed a literature search in Ovid Embase, Ovid MEDLINE, and Web of Science for CEAs published in the last 10 years on EVT. Cost or comparative effectiveness analyses were excluded.
Twenty-two studies were included in the final analysis, from the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia. They all concluded EVT to be cost-effective, but with significant variations in methodology. Fifteen studies employed …

Railroad Ties: Tracks To The White Earth And Red Lake Ojibwe Reservations, 1860s-1910s, Heidi Katter
Library Map Prize
This essay interrogates the comparative effects of railroad colonialism at the White Earth and Red Lake Ojibwe Reservations in northwestern Minnesota. Charting the history of railroad expansion in Minnesota from the mid nineteenth to early twentieth centuries using maps, railroad promotional materials, and Indian agent correspondence reveals how, when, and why the White Earth and Red Lake Ojibwe experienced land dispossession and environmental degradation. Despite their geographic proximity, White Earth and Red Lake faced different federal policies. Nevertheless, by the early twentieth century, both the White Earth and Red Lake Ojibwe lived upon deforested reservation lands. While existing historiography analyzes …
Social Agglomeration Forces And The City, Peter A. Luff
Social Agglomeration Forces And The City, Peter A. Luff
Library Map Prize
The presence of “agglomeration forces” in production markets is widely accepted and has been recently quantified in the economics literature. Social scientists have done little theoretical work, however, and even less quantitative work, on how the logic of agglomeration might also apply to social groups and the gains that people derive from their social interactions. This paper attempts to bridge this gap by modeling and measuring the benefits in terms of social prestige that arose from the spatial concentration of socialites in Manhattan in the 1920s. I formulate a model of location-based social status determination that illustrates why these benefits …

Evaluation Of Connecticut Medical Providers Concordance With 2017 Idsa/Shea Clostridioides Difficile Treatment Guidelines In New Haven County, 2017-2019, Casey Morgan Luc
Public Health Theses
Background: Treatment guidelines for Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) were updated by the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) & the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) in 2017 making various modifications, most notably for disease severity & treatment recommendations. Our objectives were to assess Connecticut medical providers’ concordance (2017-2019) to the 2017 SHEA/IDSA clinical treatment guidelines. The effect of guideline concordance on the risk of CDI recurrence was also assessed.
Methods: Using data from the Connecticut Emerging Infections Program’s CDI surveillance in New Haven County, severity & concordance were defined for CDI cases. For severity, white blood cell count …
